Houses of the Holy
As they left the car, Jimmy could hardly contain his excitement. Only the constant presence of Jonesy and Bonzo behind him kept Jimmy from attacking Robert. Striding quickly, almost running in front of him, Robert’s long blonde curls bobbed in the slight breeze. How beautiful...Jimmy bit his lip. His bandmates would never understand if they knew how much he was enjoying this wonderful rearview of Robert, let alone if they knew what else he wanted to do to him. For over a year now, Jimmy had desperately fought the urge to pounce on Robert and make him scream with joy.
Kinda like in ‘Immigrant Song’, he thought, eyes fixed on a certain jeans-clad keister directly in his range of vision.
A voice called from behind them.
“Jimmy! Hey Jimmy! Mr Sweatervest!”
“Huh? What?” Jimmy turned around so fast his head spun.
“Are we going to play that new song you wrote at the next gig?” Jonesy asked.
“Yeah.”
“Would you mind telling me the chords later? I haven’t figured out a bass part yet.”
“OK,” Jimmy said, still not quite paying attention.
Walking into the bar, Jimmy tried to redirect his blood flow to the other end of his body. He was borrowing a pair of Robert’s (super-tight) pants tonight, and they were tight even on his skinny legs, not doing much for coverage. All of his own pants had shrunk in the wash after a hilariously tragic attempt to get the guitar polish out. The last thing he needed was to have a raging boner while next to Robert – everyone who wasn’t already shitfaced would notice.
He pried his eyes from Robert’s netherland and sighed, sitting down next to him. Jonesy and Bonzo sat a few seats down, sipping and chugging beer respectively, chattering away like no other rhythm section could. Jimmy contemplated the woodgrain on the tabletop, turning a guitar pick over and over between his fingers. Should he tell Robert how he felt? If he did, Robert would be thrilled or disgusted, and Jimmy wasn’t sure how to deal with either situation. If he didn’t let him know...he’d just have to wait patiently, agonizingly, for Robert to make a move.
And who knew if he ever would?
“Penny for your thoughts?” Robert asked, clapping a big hand on Jimmy’s shoulder. “You’re awfully quiet today.”
“Just thoughtful,” Jimmy said, cautiously meeting Robert’s gaze. As he expected, his heart began to race, giddy with happiness at seeing the face of the man he loved, yet scared to death that by looking long enough into his deep blue eyes his secret would be revealed.
“Really?” Robert inquired. His irresistible smirk made Jimmy want to laugh and cry and climax at the same damn time. “You can tell me all about it – I can keep a secret.” He stuck two fingers in his mouth and whistled to the bartender. “Hey Carl! Get us two of the usual?”
***
A few minutes and a few gulps of beer later, Jimmy finally felt ready to spill the beans. Well, almost.
“So what is it?” Robert asked, stifling a burp.
“Well, it’s - You see, I think I’m in love with...someone and I just don’t know if I should tell them.” Jimmy shrugged his skinny shoulders hopefully, trying to avert his gaze from the deep V of exposed flesh and fur created by Robert’s open shirt. He took a drink. The buzz of conversations around them was comforting.
It might drown out what I’ll say if...
“Good question,” Robert admitted. “You’d probably get a better answer from an advice column”--Jimmy laughed—“but here’s my opinion: Holding in something that’s such a big deal will only hurt you. Honesty is the best policy, and I don’t mean to use a cliché, but it’s true. Even if that person doesn’t like you back, you’ll feel better knowing you gave it a chance.”
Jimmy was amazed at this personal answer. This was the happiest he’d felt since he got Zeppelin together.
“Thanks for your advice,” Jimmy said, starting another beer. “I’ll do it.”
“Good for you, Jimmurs,” Robert said, patting Jimmy’s back. Jimmy was startled at first then leaned into it, just enough so nobody who happened to be watching would see.
Where is all this beer coming from? he wondered. I don’t recall paying for this much...
“I don’t want you to be disappointed...but...you really should say something,” Robert said, rummaging in his pocket for a cigarette. Jimmy nearly choked when he saw that yet another cup of beer had appeared on the table and no one had passed by to put it there!
And I’m the one dabbling in magic, he marveled. Is it rubbing off on Rob?
Robert ran his fingers through his hair. “Got a lighter? Mine ran away,” he slurred a little.
Jimmy checked his pockets and found one. “Here you go.” Their hands touched and Jimmy’s heart skipped a beat. Robert put the cigarette to his lips, holding it so gently Jimmy was jealous of the little roll of paper and tobacco and whatever else they put in cigarettes these days.
Just before the flame touched the end of the cigarette, a hand tapped Robert's shoulder. It was the bartender.
“You’re not s’posed to smoke in ‘ere.”
“Since when?” Robert challenged, blonde eyebrows furrowed. His thumb shut the lighter lid.
“Since I put that there sign up.” The bartender gestured to the wall behind them. Jimmy turned and craned his neck to see. The all-too-familiar sign decorated the normally bare wall.
“But other bars let me smoke!” Robert begged.
“Well, this isn’t ‘other bars’, now is it?” the bartender wiseassed.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Robert said, twirling the cigarette in his hand as the bartender walked away. “I’m sorry to smoke-stain your tacky fucking wallpaper...C’mon Jimjam, let’s go.” They left, Robert taking a cup of beer out with him.
As soon as they were safely out the door and out of earshot, Robert let loose a couple of choice words for the bartender and kicked a parking meter so hard it vibrated. Jimmy paid no attention. He’d seen much worse drunken temper tantrums. And Robert wasn’t that drunk.
He drained the glass as Jimmy leaned back against the building to have a smoke himself. Jimmy almost swallowed his cigarette when Robert got insanely close to him, face to face, noses almost touching, blue eyes glittering with an unexpected great idea.
“Dare me,” Robert whispered.
“Dare you what?”
“Dare me to throw this glass into the bar.”
“Oh gawd,” Jimmy said, choked with laughter. “You wouldn’t do that, now would you?”
“Maybe. Now dare me.”
Jimmy blew a gentle puff of smoke into his mate’s face. “I dare you to throw that in there.”
“You're on.”
Robert backed up and peeked around the corner at the open door, warmed up a little and flung the glass in. For a long second there was an ominous silence.
The crash and tinkle of broken glass resounded and Robert jumped back around the corner, the yells of occupants threatening.
“Let’s go!” Robert whispered through laughs. Jimmy barely kept a hold on his cigarette when Robert grabbed his hand and yanked him down the block to the parking lot, both of them running and stumbling and giggling and trailing smoke. Robert found their car despite the darkening sky and was about to get in and drive away, but Jimmy stopped him.
“Jonesy and Bonzo might need it,” Jimmy said. “We don’t.”
After a long pause Jimmy got a sudden burst of courage. Whether it was from the beer or Robert’s reassurance he couldn’t tell, but he made a decision that would change the evening and maybe even his life.
“I need to talk to you,” Jimmy said. “Do you know anywhere completely private? It’s top-secret, you know.”
Robert took a final drag on the cigarette, nearly burned down to nothing, and stubbed it out on a parking meter. “There’s a church on the corner there that leaves their back door unlocked all the time.”
“That’s brilliant,” Jimmy grinned. They crossed the road and went around the church to the back door, Jimmy following Robert’s lead. Robert jiggled the door. As usual, it was unlocked.
“They’re ‘closed’ now, so nobody’s going to be here, right?” Jimmy asked.
“Of course.”
They went in. The door shut behind them and they were plunged into blackness.
“Jimmeeeeeeee,” Robert whined, “it’s so dark in here.”
“You are correct.”
“I’m scared of the dark. Pleeeeeeeaasssse turn on a light or something, Jimmurs. I’m a-scared. I’m afwaid.”
Jimmy relented and flicked on his lighter. Robert, slightly inebriated and getting very friendly, clung to Jimmy’s arm. The contact was exciting.
“Thank you.”
“Anytime. Those unlocked doors are just dandy. Now where the hell is a light switch?” Jimmy felt for one as they went. Nothing but smooth wall. His green eyes widened when his fingers touched metal. Holding the lighter close to it, he saw it was a candle holder...with a candle in it. He lit it and all was illuminated with a warm glow. A stained glass window unlike any they had ever seen composed almost a whole wall. Robert sat down in a pew close to the front.
“So what d’you need to talk to me about?”
“Dare me to go tell that person I love them.”
“D’you know where they are?”
“Oh yeah, I know exactly where they are,” Jimmy said, allowing himself to chuckle. If Robert only knew.
“I dare you.”
“I accept your challenge.” Jimmy marched off into another room, pretending to leave. His legs seemed to take on a life of their own as he walked out. He tried to stop, to turn around, but his fear would not allow him to. Against his will he headed down a hall, lit by a solitary candle that someone had left burning.
What is happening here? Am I dreaming? He pinched himself hard. He wasn’t. Why can’t I turn around? Where am I going anyway?
The intricately woven rug beneath his feet tripped him up and he cried out in pain as he fell backwards, landing on his back.
“OWWWWWWWWW!!!!”
“Oh no! Jimmy, are you okay?”
“No – it hurts...”
He wasn’t faking. He had somehow landed wrong and twisted his spine in a very uncomfortable way, and the guitar slide in his pocket fell out and dug into his side. Why didn’t I tell him before I got myself into this stupid position?
“Jimmy? What happened?” Robert’s hurried footsteps clacked on the floor.
“I tripped,” he groaned. It really hurt now. “Please come here.”
No sooner had the words crossed his lips then Robert was there. He looked so gorgeous and concerned that Jimmy felt a lump in his throat. When Robert crouched beside him to see if he was all right, Jimmy couldn’t help it. The pain and sentiment combined to weaken him and a tear rolled down his cheek.
“Aw, don’t cry, Jimjam,” Robert cooed, leaning down to kiss his forehead. “Can you move?”
Jimmy shook his head. Robert slipped one arm under his back and the other under his legs, gently lifting him.
“Careful – I think I’ve got a BLOODY HELL sprain,” Jimmy yelped. Robert’s strength and care only made Jimmy want him more. Robert carried him to the front of the hall and laid him on the floor, pulling a cushion off the pew for his head. The carpet was thick as three wool sweaters and very soft.
Undoing Jimmy’s shirt and leaving it somewhere on the floor, Robert ran his hands over Jimmy's thin body, checking for bruises and broken bones. Jimmy winced.
“Robert, dear?”
“Yes Jimmurs?” His thumb wiped a tear from Jimmy’s cheek.
Jimmy sighed. Here goes nothing. “I – I love you. I think I’m in love with you.”
“Oh, Jimjam,” Robert gushed, “why didn’t you say so? I love you too!”
“I was scared you wouldn’t love me back.”
“You don’t have to think about that ever again,” Robert whispered, leaning in for a long kiss. His lips touched Jimmy’s and his eyelashes brushed his face as they closed. Jimmy tugged the shirt from Robert's shoulders and raked his hands down his back, pulling him close.
Robert broke the kiss to look down at Jimmy, their hearts racing, both wondering what their bandmates would think but not particularly caring.
“Kiss me again,” Jimmy begged, wanting nothing more.
“I will if you’ll tell me why you’re trembling.”
“I’m trembling with joy,” Jimmy confessed.
Another kiss rewarded him. He could feel Robert’s heartbeat against his own, pounding, he hoped, with love and lust and happiness. Jimmy boldly parted his lips and kissed him back. Hard. Their tongues touched and Jimmy could taste the alcohol they’d had not so long ago, lingering like a good memory.
Robert moaned, gripping Jimmy’s bony hips. He turned Jimmy over, kissing and licking his spine all the way down to the small of his back, then back up to the nape of his neck. Jimmy sighed in appreciation as Robert lay half on top of him, their legs entangled, stroking his hair. Jimmy felt something that probably wasn’t a pencil in Robert’s pocket nudging his rear end and he longed to hold Robert like he was holding him now, to kiss him, to rip off his clothes and –
“Jimmy,” Robert said. “Jimmy.”
He knew what Robert was trying to say. He just couldn’t find the words.
They rolled over together, fooling around on the floor of a church, and it felt so right, so scandalous, so inevitable. Jimmy couldn’t help himself much longer. He laughed.
“What’s so funny?”
“I don’t know, Robert. I’m just so happy.”
They kissed again, hands all over. Jimmy tried not to make too much noise, but it was impossible. The little sounds Robert made every time their mouths met made him hard. Jimmy could hardly believe this was happening. He finally got his hands on Robert, who he’d wanted for so long. He remembered something he’d been fantasizing about for a long time and gasped when Robert’s leg slipped between his. He couldn’t tell which way was up anymore. He clung to Robert and speared his fingers through his golden curls, kissing his neck. Robert sighed heavily and detached. Jimmy whimpered in protest but was quickly silenced when he saw Robert was taking off his pants. Robert covered Jimmy’s body with his own, kissing and grabbing and trying to fuck through Jimmy’s pants, Jimmy crazy with joy and pleasant shock.
When Robert unbuttoned Jimmy’s jeans, Jimmy nearly exploded right then. Robert’s warm hands moved everywhere except where Jimmy wanted them to go. Jimmy let out a growl and pounced on him, stroking his thick blonde chest hair, wrapping his leg around him, begging without words.
Robert obeyed.
***
Jimmy opened his eyes a few minutes later, face buried in Robert’s hair. Robert sighed and pulled Jimmy closer, kissing his cheek. Jimmy was in heaven. Had this actually happened? Did they just do that or was it all a dream? He couldn’t tell. It felt almost too good to be true.
Just to be sure Robert was really there he speared his long fingers through his hair and held him tight. Robert hugged him back and laid his head on Jimmy’s shoulder. It was too...right. Jimmy yawned. The usual post-lovemaking haze clouded what little he could see, but his thoughts were clear: Should we tell anyone? Hell, no. We’d get booted out of so many gigs; the band will have no future. And I can’t have that. Not after all we went through to get this far. Nothing to do about it now. I guess I’ll just go to sleep now...
***
He did not know how long they had slept. The sky was not light, but he had the feeling it was a long time. Robert’s sleeping form blocked his view of the door they had entered through, and to move would surely disturb him. Somehow they had dozed off like that, Jimmy’s arm under Robert's big body, going numb. If he didn’t do something, he would never play guitar again.
Gingerly he tugged his arm out from under Robert and peered into the darkness. A candle was lit somewhere far away, but it barely made anything easier to see where they were. Their clothes lay in a tangled heap not far from where they lay, Jimmy’s pants on Robert's shirt, another reminder of how their world had just changed.
Jimmy turned back to Robert, sleeping peacefully on the carpet. He couldn’t let them stay there. Tomorrow was Sunday and church would start, bright and early as always, and they’d be in deep shit. Reluctantly, Jimmy dressed. He wanted nothing more than to lay back down next to Robert and spoon with him and go back to sleep, but it was not to be. Their bandmates would ask so many questions if they didn’t call tomorrow. It was definitely dark outside now, which made it that much harder to hail a taxi or find the nearest Rent-A-Piece-Of-Crap. And the subways and buses? Always late and crowded as hell.
He studied Robert for just a second more, wishing he could capture this moment forever. Oh, for a camera! His new guitar for a camera! Kneeling next to Robert, gently shaking his bare shoulder, he woke him.
Robert rubbed his eyes, slowly sitting up. “Whasgoinon?”
“Wake up, babe, it’s really late” – judging by the full moon shining through the window, it had to be – “and Jonesy and Bonzo probably left without us. We gotta go, c’mon.”
“Aw, please, Jimjam,” Robert whined, “let’s stay here a little longer. Please.” He wrapped his arms around Jimmy and tried to pull him back down.
“Robert.”
He didn’t answer.
“Robert.” Jimmy punctuated this with a kiss to get his attention, almost losing his own train of thought in the process. “Listen. Tomorrow’s Sunday.”
“Yeah, so?” Robert was stubborn. “Let those churchgoing gits walk in and see us in our birthday suits. It’ll do ‘em a world of good.” He giggled.
Jimmy chuckled at the thought and handed him his clothes. Clearly, he was going to have to bribe him. “If you’ll just get decent and come with me, you can stay at my flat tonight.”
Robert was silent. Hopefully he’s thinking it over, Jimmy thought. “And tomorrow we can...”
“...finish where we left off?” Robert suggested. Jimmy was stunned by his accuracy.
“Yes.” He could hear the hope and smile in Robert’s voice, and began to grin uncontrollably under cover of darkness. “So get dressed and we can do just that.”
While Robert dressed, Jimmy took a look around the church. The stained glass window was still there, throwing little spots of coloured light over them. A shadow obscured Jimmy’s line of vision and he jumped. He lit his lighter and thrust it in the direction of the shadow.
It was a huge cross, complete with a model of Jesus nailed up, wounds red with chipping paint. At first Jimmy was horrified. Then he began to giggle.
“What’re you looking at there, Jimmy?” Robert asked. He too began to laugh.
Jimmy couldn’t contain his mirth anymore. Both of them burst into paroxysms of laughter, slapping their knees and gasping for breath.
“We just fucked in front of a crucifix! Holy fuck...”
“I KNOW! Can you imagine?”
“I can now! Oh gawd...”
They laughed until their stomachs hurt so bad they had to stop. At least Robert dressed before they got distracted.
“C’mon, let’s go,” Jimmy whispered. Robert took his hand and they headed for the door.
***
It had grown cool outside as the night wore on. Robert shivered slightly in shirtsleeves. Jimmy wanted to put an arm around him to keep him warm, but they were in full view of whoever happened to be nearby. The last thing they needed was to have an unfavourable reputation.
If this band’s going to get any gigs, Jimmy thought, we’d better behave ourselves.
Walking back to the parking lot, they found Jonesy’s car gone. Bonzo didn’t have a car – nobody trusted him not to get smashed one night and crash it. He’d come back the next day, apologizing like crazy, begging for another chance and of course another car, and crash over and over again. “The quickest way to spend every pound we earn,” Jimmy had said the day the first car was ruined. “Maybe when we get rich and famous, you can have one.” Of course, Bonzo didn’t mean to crash it, but it happened anyway, and after one disaster, the rest were rather predictable.
Thankfully, Jimmy had brought his car, but almost forgot about it until he saw it parked alone at the end of a row. Robert yawned hugely as they got inside.
“My, I’m tired.”
“You still have to sit up front. You know I can’t carry you out if you fall asleep.”
“All right then.”
The drive home was one Jimmy would never forget. He had driven home many times, but never alone with Robert, and certainly not at this hour after fornicating on the floor of a holy place. After a few blocks Robert leaned over and whispered into Jimmy’s ear.
“That was wonderful.”
“Thank you, dear.” Jimmy kissed his cheek.
Robert laid his head on Jimmy's shoulder as they turned a corner.
“Robert, please, do you want them to see us?”
“Who see us? No one’s awake, never mind out dri-”
A car passed them. Then another.
“Told ya.” Deathly silence.
“Jimjam, I love you so much.”
“Oh, all right. Just cover your face with your hair. They’ll think you’re a girl.”
Robert did so, his head never leaving its place, and put his arm over the back of Jimmy’s seat.
Jimmy smiled. He’d finally gotten what he wanted, but now what? How to keep it a secret? What if it didn’t stay a secret? Where to go next time? How to answer their bandmates’ questions when they ask where they went last night?
Jimmy dismissed these worries with a deft twist of the steering wheel. As the car turned into the driveway, Robert was very quiet, void of all signs of life except breathing softly on Jimmy’s neck. Jimmy turned the car off and held Robert's sleeping hand.
Is he asleep? I guess I’ll just savor the moment.
The moment didn’t last long enough. Robert stirred, pressing his lips to Jimmy’s neck. “Are we there yet?”
“Yeah. We’ve been here for a while actually, but I didn’t wanna bother you.”
Jimmy felt him smile against his neck. “That’s nice.”
“Let’s get inside. It’s cold out here.”
It was not winter, but the temperature did drop considerably when the sun went down. It was a long ride on the lift up to Jimmy’s flat. Second floor from the top felt so far away from the parking lot below. Robert’s ears popped, the feeling made more unpleasant by fatigue and slight drunkenness. When the lift door opened, Jimmy poked his head out to scan for passerby.
“The coast is clear. Let’s go!”
They tiptoed quickly to Jimmy’s door, giggling all the way like a couple of kids trying not to get caught.
But technically, that’s all we are.
When they got in, Jimmy locked the door and kicked off his shoes. Robert stood a bit awkwardly, leaning against the wall, having never really looked at Jimmy’s house. The decoration was...unique, but that wasn’t the only thing. Most every flat surface was covered with stuff: clothes, guitar strings, papers, books, pens.
“Yeah, I don’t clean house very often,” Jimmy smirked. “Go ahead, make yourself comfortable. Go on.”
Robert scanned the few rooms and flopped down on Jimmy’s bed, kicking off his shoes into a corner.
“Hey, that’s mine!” Jimmy joked.
“At least it’s big enough to share.”
The bedside table was home to what looked like an autopsy performed on a Telecaster. Its wire guts spilled out of the jack pitifully. A piece of paper resting next to it screamed FIX ME!
Jimmy picked up the paper and read it. “Not a bad idea...” He sat down next to Robert. “But that’ll have to wait.” He bent to take off his socks and cried out in pain.
“You OK, Jimmy?”
“Apparently not,” he gasped. “My back is killing me. I must have fallen pretty hard.”
“I’ll rub it, if you want.” Robert looked so good sprawled out on the paisley-patterned blankets that he couldn’t resist.
“Oh, I do want.” Jimmy lay down next to him and tried not to squeal with excitement.
Robert’s big hands peeled off Jimmy’s shirt, then his own, and stroked Jimmy’s back, loosening the knots in his muscles, making his heart race, finally laying his head on Jimmy’s back and grasping his hand.
They stayed like that, holding each other as they fell asleep.
