You Can’t Control Destiny – Chapter 10
When Natalie awoke the sun was much lower in the sky. She lay quietly for a few minutes while listening to the singing of the birds. Their songs differed from the morning music, urging one another to get ready for bed. A warm glow spread through her reaching to her toest wrt wriggled in reaction. Hayden laid sprawled half over her, clutching her close to him like she was a teddy bear. Lazily she reachut tut to the nightstand and groped for her watch. Blinking, she focused on the dials.
“Hayden!” Natalie gasped, staring in disbelief at the time.
“What?” He groggily answered against her shoulder.
“It’s after 5!” She exclaimed. “They could be here any minute! If they find us like this….”
“Relax,” Hayden mumbled, blinking the sleep from his eyes. “No one’s called yet, have they?” Natalie shook her head. “So call them instead and you’ll know what’s going on.”
Natalie tried to move away to get the cell phone but Hayden tightened his hold and made a noise of protest. “I’m just getting the phone,” she assured with a smile. Turning her head she kissed the tip of his nose, “then I’ll be right back.”
“Promise?” He asked.
“Hayden, it’s right there on the nightstand,” she giggled, enjoying his playful complaining. “I roll away for one second to grab it and in the next I roll right back to you.”
Hayden considered this for a moment, weighing her statement and the amount of time her skin would not be warming his, but his eyes twinkled and the effect was lost.
“Hayden,” Natalie warned, giving him a playfully stern look.
“Ok, ok,” he grumbled, releasing her. “Two seconds.” Natalie rolled away and rose on one elbow. The cell phone lay on the far side of the nightstand and she had to stretch for it. “One…TWO!” Her fingers barely wrapped around the phone when Hayden pounced, grabbing her and hauling her down onto her back, pinning her to the bed. She squealed in surprise. “That was more than two seconds, young lady. Now you have to take the punishment.”
Hayden’s blue eyes gleamed with a leering threat and Natalie laughed up at him. “And what kind of punishment is that, may I ask?” She demanded haughtily.
“This!” Hayden’s head buried against her neck where he proceeded to blow raspberries on her skin. She screeched and squirmed under him attempting to dislodge him without success. The more he did it the more the tickling weakened her. No strength left, she breathlessly pleaded between her shouts of laughter. “Stop! Ok, ok! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”
The vibrations on her skin ceased, but his lips remained, beginning to caress where he had tickled. Natalie squirmed again beneath him, but now her movements told him she approved of what he was doing and encouraged him for more. He kissed the places he now knew weakened her to him and made his way to her mouth. As they fell into a slow, drugging kiss Natalie wrapped her arms around his neck and blissfully sighed.
A smug Hayden lifted his mouth away and raised his eyebrows. “I guess I should have done this instead,” he teased, certain of his power over her.
“Mmm. I guess you’re right,” Natalie purred, a hand stroking along the smooth skin of his back.
Hayden sighed. “I would much rather spend the rest of the day and nightht hht here with you, but you’d better make that call. You’re right. We don’t need anyone knowing about this. This is our business and no one else’s.”
Gratefully, Natalie lifted her head and kissed his lips. “I agree,” she said, her brown eyes dark and serious. Hayden’s eyes narrowed at the thoughts behind them.
The breath Natalie was holding released in relief when George answered his cell phone and announced they were still on Kauai but would be there around 7. Most of the crew they needed had arrived and would be bringing all the rest of the equipment over to set up so they could begin bright and early the next morning.
“Well,” Natalie sighed, “they’ll be here around 7.” Pensive, she played with his fingers and grimaced. “I’m not sure if I’m happy or sad.”
“I know. I want to stay here just like this but I know we can’t. However,” Hayden let go of her hand and loomed above her, “don’t ask me to give you up.”
Nat fro frowned and cupped his chee“Did“Did I say you have to?”
“No, but I can see the thoughts behind those beautiful, brown eyes of yours,” he answered. Natalie stared up at him chewing on her lip, confused at how well he knew her. A finger touched her lip. “No one will ever know, Nat. You’re going to find out just how good of an actor I really am.”
A thumb swept across his bottom lip. “Thank you,” she whispered. “I’m not going to enjoy being without you, either, but it has to be that way.” An eyebrow rose at her thoughts. “Still,” she wondered, “you are just across the hall from me and I should study my lines more often on the weekends…and a few other things.”
The suggestion lit Natalie’s face with an impish smile and Hayden chuckled at the wicked gleam in her eyes. “You are positively shameless,” he chided.
“Only with you,” she teasingly assured.
“Fine by me,” he grinned as her arms drew him down onto her.
A short while later, after Hayden had been forced out of bed by Natalie so they could remake it, he wandered downstairs to retrieve the beach towels and clothing they had worn earlier that day over their swimsuits. A pleasant, unassuming whistle that held no particular tune emanated from him. They would need to sweep the floor, he mused idly. In spite of brushing themselves off, they had still brought in sand and he could see it dusted across the floor.
Hauling the items into his arms, Hayden turned and started back towards the stairs. As he passed the sitting room where the piano stood a naughty grin tilted his lips, memories of those moments etched forever in his psyche. Even now he couldn’t believe the audacity with which he’d seduced her. Never had he enjoyed plg thg the piano more! A chuckle escaped him and he strode by the room throwing the piano a smug glance.
“WHOA!!” he shouted out, the smug grin smacked clean from his mouth. The bundle in his arms dropped to the floor while he stared in horror at an almost blunder of huge proportions. Feet engaged a little too quickly, he tripped and slid over the clothes in his haste to reach the piano. Diving under the piano bench he retrieved the confirmation of their little escapade, then ran back to pick up the clothing and charged up the stairs.
“Are you all right?” Natalie eyed Hayden skeptically, taking in his pale face. In answer, he released his bundle except for one item.
“Um, do you think you could put this someplace other than under the piano bench?” he quipped, dangling her bikini top from one finger.
“Wha…?!” She gasped, eyes rounding.
“Yea,” he nodded, throwing it to her.
“I didn’t throw it there!” Natalie denied hotly, catching it. “You did!”
“Well, you could’ve reminded me!” Hayden shot back. “It wasn’t exactly on my list of priorities then!”
”Well, it wasn’t on mine, either!” She exclaimed, jamming her hands on her hips. “And you’re the one who took it off me!”
“Yeeeaaaa,” Hayden salaciously drawled.
“Oh, shut up!” Natalie broke into giggles at his expression.
Hayden smiled and rolled his eyes. “I would’ve had a lot of explaining to do if George had seen that under the piano.” Laughter bubbled up and he wrapped his arms around his middle trying to hold it in. By the time he finished laughing he and Natalie were wiping tears from their eyes.
“Your chin would’ve been on the floor,” Natalie chuckled weakly, walking over and putting her arms around his waist. With her head against his chest she heard the rumbling of his laughter.
“I wouldn’t have been able to think fast enough,” he said as she lifted her head to look at him. “It would’ve been ‘I…uh…we…uh…how did that get there, Natalie?’”
They started laughing all over again at the picture in their minds. When they were able to breathe, Hayden tilted her chin and kissed her. Natalie’s lips clung to his for she knew it would be a while before she could kiss him again. Already it seemed so natural to do and she didn’t want to give it up. He was so very addictive. The kiss lengthened, her arms stealing around her neck so she could bury her fingers in his thick hair. His tongue slid along her lips and she opened, welcoming him into her mouth. For long moments they lost themselves in each other. Reluctantly parting, they smiled then separated to finish getting ready. Natalie felt the loss immediately. Full of concern her eyes went to the doorway where Hayden had just been. Unaware of it, her teeth sunk into her lower lip and gnawed.
They were sitting on the front veranda studying their lines for the next day’s shoot when George and Rick arrived. As the boats pulled in, Natalie and Hayden walked down to meet them. From the looks on everyone’s faces it was easy to see the next day would be long with lots to accomplish. But, as usual, the crew went straight to work unloading equipment and preparing for the first shoot of the day.
George greeted Natalie with a hug and Hayden with a handshake, grateful the two actors were once again relaxed and amiable towards one another. Behind him Rick helped an older man off the boat and walked up to them.
“I’d like you to meet Ken Uemura,” George introduced the elderly man whose eyes first settled on his beloved land. He stood a little hunched over, his white hair deepening the color of holynolynesian skin, but his eyes sparkled with life as he looked back and forth between Natalie and Hayden.
“How nice to meet you,” Ken greeted them warmly, taking Natalie’s hand between his. “I hope that you have enjoyed your little vacation on Lorelei Island.”
“Oh, Mr. Uemura…”
“Please, call me Ken.”
Ken, this place is absolutely beautiful!” Natalie enthused, her eyes sparkling. “It’s a paradise!”
“Yes, it has been just what we needed,” Hayden smiled, his voice sincere. He didn’t dare look at Natalie after he’d said that for he was adding to himself, definitely just what we needed. “We explored a little.”
“Did you see my waterfall?” Ken asked, eyes narrowing in thought.
“Yes, sir. It is fantastic!”
“Well, we got a little wet crawling behind it,” Natalie laughed.
Ken’s face broke into a huge smile, his eyes knowingly probing theirs. “Ah! You found the cave! How nice. Lorelei and I loved that place.” A nostalgic bittersweet look entered his eyes and he sighed. “When I bought our island I refused to let anyone touch it. I’ve always thought it was magical.” He winked. “Don’t you think so?” Natalie and Hayden nodded, wary of the twinkle in his eyes. “Come. Ride up to the house with me and tell me what you like about my place. I am just too old for the walk anymore.”
While the three of them went to a jeep, George and Rick walked behind them. George raised expectant eyebrows at Rick. Rolling his eyes, Rick dug into his pocket and pulled out a twenty-dollar bill shoving it into George’s outstretched hand. No one saw the exchange of looks between the two men or Rick’s resigned shrug.
“Are you ever wrong?” Rick mumbled to George.
“Of course,” George answered with a wry smile, “but not about this.”
During a late light supper George and Rick went over the next day’s schedule. Ken was very interested in the machinations of making a movie and stayed interested through all the talk. Natalie’s nerves frayed more with every minute that ticked by, and her smile began to hurt from holding it so long. Every time someone at the table mentioned Hayden’s and her name in the same sentence her insides churned, sure everyone would look at her and know. But no one looked. Not even Hayden. He sat relaxed, friendly, and interested in allng ong on around him, not even looking at her much. Irrationally, she began to feel a little vexed. Did he have to ignore her completely?
“I like you two young people,” Ken said as the evening wound down. “I think I’m a pretty good judge of people. I can tell when people are good and honest. That’s why I’m so rich. I surround myself with good people.” He smiled, his kind eyes taking them both in his gaze. “I can see you love my island. It touches you. You understand it. You two are welcome here anytime.”
Hayden knew this offer was not made lightly. This man truly loved his long departed wife and he was touched by the sincere invitation. Sparing a quick glance at Natalie he knew she realized the same.
“Thank you,” Hayden accepted graciously. “It’s a very special place. I would love to come back here again.”
“I would, too,” Natalie interjected, her eyes not looking at Hayden. “You’re right. It is a magical land.”
When it was time to retire for the night, Natalie gratefully said her good nights and left the table. In spite of the evening progressing smoothly, the strain began to wear on her. Seeds of doubt and confusion about the past 48 hours took root in her mind and she desired to escape to the solitude of her room. She popped the dishes into the dishwasher first and then headed for the stairs. Notes from the piano drifted into the foyer and unable to help herself she walked into the sitting room.
Hayden sat at the piano playing a song to relax him before going upstairs. Natalie walked up beside him absently taking note of the dirty blonde hair curling at his nape, his blue eyes unfocused and soft, the line of strength in his jaw, the scar that ran through his right eyebrow. A lump lodged in her throat as she looked at his full lips and remembered how they felt on her skin. After that it was inevitable her eyes would fall to his hands. Never had she dwelt so intently on a man’s hands before. She liked hands and found them expressive, but his were more than that. His hands knew now how to touch her, play her, bring out haunting music in her like he was doing to the piano. It scared her.
Suddenly, Hayden’s head turned and he looked into her eyes. He knew he would see the doubt in those beautiful eyes that he found so mesmerizing. To him it was easy to see her confusion about what happened whenever they were alone together. She reminded him of a skittish colt, who startled very easily and would run like the wind if things got too close for comfort. But he could also see the longing in those depths. Longing for him. His heart thudded heavily in his chest and he couldn’t help but smile at her. She couldn’t help but smile back.
“I’m going to bed,” Natalie said when he stopped playing, “but I had to come in and listen to you play.” With all the strength she had she pushed at the images of the two of them at the piano together, but the images wouldn’t budge. His deep voice whispering, ‘Let’s go, baby’ echoed through the hallways of her mind. She refused to acknowledge the goose bumps on her arm.
“I’m going, too,” Hayden stood and stretched. Natalie scolded herself for appreciating the long lines of his body. “I’ll walk up with you. It’s going to be a long day tomorrow.”
As they went upstairs they idly discussed the next day’s shoot. To anyone watching they were two coworkers talking shop. To them it covered what had to be covered. They reached the doors to their rooms and Hayden’s eyes narrowed and looked at her lips for a long moment. On a heartfelt sigh they parted and a painful tug pulled his gaze to her eyes, a crooked smile hovering on his mouth.
“Good night, Natalie,” he bade softly as she turned to open her door.
Natalie stopped and turned back to him. “Sweet dreams,” she murmured.
Hayden shrugged. “I guess it’ll have to do.”
Natalie closed the door to her room and flung herself onto the bed, burying her face into a pillow. Hayden’s scent clung to it. Groaning, she dragged herself away from it and got ready for bed. If anyone had peeked in on her during the night they would’ve seen her curled towards the middle of the bed, a pillow cradled in her arms, her face half buried in it.
Hayden lay awake in the dark for a long time.
