Marshall threw the door open and smiled at his daughter, before scooping her up into his arms.
“Good morning Miss Jade. Did you have fun at your sleepover?”
“Yup, a whole lot! Did you?”
Marshall looked down at her with a frown. “Did I what?”
Hailie looked around the living area confused. “Didn’t Ally sleep over with you?”
Marshall’s frown deepened. How in the world did she know about Ally staying the night?
“Why would she do that?”
“Because that’s what they do in the movies. Didn’t you like her enough? Didn’t you want her to sleep over daddy?”
“Baby, Ally and I had a really good time yesterday, but you have to understand that not everything you see in the movies happens in real life.”
“I know. I was just hoping you liked her.”
“I do baby. I like her a lot. Would it have made you happy if she slept over?”
“Yeah! I liked her daddy. She was really nice! If she slept over then that would mean you guys were friends and she would come to see us all the time then.”
Marshall smiled at that. If only it were that simple. As if a mere sleepover would make or break a friendship between two adults.
“Well Hai, Ally and I are gonna be really good friends and since she’s here now why don’t you go say hi.”
“She did sleep over! Yay!” Hailie screamed as she ran into the kitchen area.
“Hi Hailie.” Ally smiled as the little girl rushed over to her.
“Hi! Did you have fun at the sleepover with my dad?”
Ally’s eyes widened and she looked up at a smirking Marshall. What the hell did he tell her?
“Yea Ally, did you have fun at our sleepover?” Marshall laughed as he sat down opposite her.
Heat rushed up her neck and over her face as she looked from father to daughter.
“Yes.” She squeaked, earning another smirk from Marshall.
“Can I have some fruit daddy?”
“Sure baby, didn’t you eat at Dre’s though?”
“Yup, but I got up really early so now I’m hungry again.”
“Well take whatever you want Hai.”
Ally smiled to herself and watched them. They were so cute together and definitely meant to bring out the best in the other.
“So what’s the plan for today Hai Hai?”
“Is Ally gonna hang out with us today?”
“If you want her to.”
“Yay! I wanna go to the movies daddy. And then I wanna go to the beach so I can swim in the waves.”
“Ok…how about we go to the beach first so I have time to get a movie theater ready for us?”
“Ok, and can we get some ice cream too?”
Marshall laughed at his daughter and nodded his head. “Yea baby…we’ll get some ice cream too.”
“We’re gonna have so much fun Ally. Do you like the beach?” Hailie asked, sitting next to her new friend.
“Of course! Who doesn’t?” Ally joked as she finished her breakfast.
“Daddy! He says he likes the pool better because then he doesn’t have to swim with fish poop.” Hailie giggled.
“Stop telling stories about me Hailie!” Marshall growled from the other side of the room as he was put on hold.
Just as Ally was finishing cleaning up from her breakfast she heard her own cell ring. Groaning, she made her way over to the end table she’d left it on and slowly picked it up to look at the caller ID. Sighing deeply at seeing the Westings' number on the screen, she flipped it open before calmly greeting her former boss.
The voice on the other end of the line took her by surprise.
“Ally?” A soft voice questioned.
“Tiffany?”
“Yes…aren’t you coming here today?”
“Um…actually I told your mother I wouldn’t be able to make it today because…I have some friends who came over to spend some time with me.”
“Oh…so…who is gonna take care of us then?”
“What do you mean, Tiffy? Didn’t your mom call another sitter?”
“No..she left for work already…I just woke up and nobody was here to make me breakfast.”
“She left you alone?! Where is Brian Tiffany?”
“I don’t know…I just looked in mommy and daddy’s room and the kitchen but no one was here…I didn’t know what else to do and I thought you were going to be here…” Tiffany said as she started to cry softly.
“Oh don’t cry Tiff. Go up and see if Brian is still sleeping and I’ll try and get there as soon as I can ok?” Ally instructed as she started to put her shoes on and gather her things.
“Ok…he’s here. Should I wake him up?”
“Yea…tell him that I’m on the phone and need to talk to him.”
“Ok…Brian…wake up…Ally wants you.”
A second later a goggy hello came through the phone.
“Brian…I need you to wake up for me. Your mom went to work already and didn’t find another sitter for you guys. I know your more than capable of taking care of yourself, but you know how Tiffy can get when she wants something so I’m going to try and get there as soon as I can. Give me like a half hour and I’ll be there. Until then, please fix yourselves a bowl of ceral and keep an eye on your sister ok?”
“Ok…can I go back to sleep when you get here?”
“Yea, no problem…just watch her for now ok?”
“Ok…bye.”
Ally shut the phone and looked up at Marshall and Hailie.
“So…what happened?” Marshall asked, picking Hailie up and sitting on the couch next to Ally.
“Mrs. Westing left her children alone because I didn’t show up for work. I don’t know if she just figured I was on my way or if she just didn’t care.”
“Damn…how old are they?”
“Tiffany is 5 and Brian is 15. I just can’t believe she would do this!”
“They’ll be ok…Brian is old enough to keep an eye on her.”
“Its not that really…these kids are…god they are so sheltered. Their parents don’t really pay much attention to them and they never go anywhere. I think the only time they ever go anywhere is when they go to school or I take them out for an afternoon. They must be so scared.”
“So your not gonna spend the day with us?” Hailie asked from her fathers lap.
“I’m really sorry Hailie…I promise I’ll try and get back here as soon as I can…maybe I’ll be in time for the movie?” Ally asked, looking at Marshall for help.
“Why can’t you bring them with us? Then I can play with them too?”
“Well…I…I guess I could do that if your dad thinks it’ll be ok.”
“Its cool…We’ll go get them now on the way to the beach.”
“Oh thank you daddy!” Hailie yelled, wrapping her arms around his neck for a tight hug.
“Yea…thanks Marshall…I’m sorry to mess up the plans but…”
“Don’t worry about it Ally. It’ll be fine; this will give Hailie the chance to make some friends over here besides Dre’s kids.”
“I like Dre’s kids!” Hailie said offensively.
“I know that Hai Hai, but does that mean you can’t have more friends over here?”
“No.”
“Exactly, so go change into your suit so we can go pick them up.”
They watched as she ran into her room and slammed the door before turning to each other.
“Thanks Marshall.”
Smiling, Marshall pulled her into his arms and kissed her gently. “I understand what its like to worry. It aint gonna mess anything up so it’s cool.”
Ally kissed him again and hugged him tight. She knew she was falling for him. She always did it to herself. No matter how hard she tried, she always fell hard and fast and unfortunately, this time it felt real. If whatever they were working on here didn’t work out, she knew it was going to hurt deep inside. No matter how much she willed it not to.
