Chapter 9
The next morning I woke up even more confused if that was even possible. I had had the strangest dream…about Nick. I didn’t know what to make of it. I had dreamed that Nick wasn’t a vampire, and we were dating. It didn’t make any sense at all. I hated the guy, so why was I dreaming about him. I mean, if it had been a nightmare, I could understand it, but the way I was feeling when I woke up, I knew it wasn’t a nightmare. I pushed it to the back of my mind, thinking that it was just my mind playing tricks on me. What was important was that I found Kevin and told him about what had happened the night before. I first looked for him in the kitchen, since that’s where I usually found him in the morning. When I didn’t find him there, I looked in his bedroom, thinking that maybe he hadn’t gotten up yet, but he wasn’t there. So I looked everywhere else in the apartment, and I finally found him in the office hiding behind a pile of books. I leaned against the doorframe and smirked at him. It was so typical of him to be buried in books from early morning to late night.
“ What are you doing?” I asked.
He looked up from the book he was reading,
“ Oh…’morning!” He said smiling, “ Actually I was trying to find any earlier incidents like the one you had last night…”
“ Yeah…about that…” I said sitting down in front of him, “I need to talk to you about something.”
“ What’s wrong?” He asked, and there was that worried look again. It seemed like that’s all he did. Worry and work. Worry and work. I definitely needed to talk Jess into asking him out. Not that I thought it would be hard getting her to do it. The challenge was to get Kevin to accept the invitation. But let me return to the subject at hand. Kevin had asked what was wrong, and I honestly didn’t know.
“ Well, something happened that I didn’t tell you last night, I don’t know if it means anything!” I said.
“ Okay…” he answered listening to what I had to say.
“ Well…after Nick had me pinned to the table, he noticed some blood on my lip…” I said.
“ And?” Kevin urged me to go on.
“ And then he bent down and licked it off.” I continued.
“ Oh…well I’m sure he only did it to taunt you.” Kevin said, relieved that it wasn’t more than that.
“ I know it was!” I said, “ But then when he looked up at me again, something changed in his eyes…I can’t explain it…It was almost as if he regretted it, and that’s when he decided to let me go.” I finished.
“ That’s strange…” Kevin said, in deep thought.
“ Well, what do you think happened?” I asked.
“ I honestly have no idea!” Kevin said, “ That’s what I wanted to tell you…I haven’t been able to find any record of Nick ever letting a slayer go!”
“ So basically you can’t help me figure out what the hell happened?” I said leaning back in the seat and letting out a sigh.
“ I’m afraid so” Kevin said looking at me apologetically.
“ So what are we doing tonight?” I asked him, wanting to talk about something a little bit different.
“ I was thinking we’d go to The Wave, check out what’s happening there…” He said.
“ Okay…are we looking for someone special there, or are we just going to have some fun?” I asked hoping it would be the latter.
“ No…no we’re not looking for anyone in particular, I just want to make sure there aren’t any vamps on the prowl in there tonight.” He said.
“ Well why would there be more vamps there tonight that any other night?” I had no clue at all.
“ Because there’s a band playing there tonight, apparently they’ve been known to draw a crowd!” Kevin answered.
“ See, that’s what this job does to me, it puts me out of the loop, I have no idea what’s going on in the club I used to go to every damn weekend!” I whined.
Kevin started laughing at me. I looked at him and it was the first time I had ever seen him laugh so hard, so of course I had to smile, well actually I laughed with him.
“ So are you in? Or am I going alone?” Kevin asked.
“ I’m in!” I said, “Definitely!”
I walked to the bathroom to take shower. I turned on the water and let it flow for a while until it had the right temperature. I stepped behind the shower curtain and let the warm water hit my sore body. The fight with Nick the night before had taken its toll on my body. I had black and blue marks over my ribcage. My upper lip was swollen, and my left eye was black. To add to that my muscles ached as well. Though I was in great shape by now. The fight had still been very physically demanding. To top it all off, I had the worst headache I could remember ever having, and there was a huge bump where I was hit in the head. I enjoyed the shower so much I completely forgot how long I was in there for. When I realized that it had been almost thirty minutes, I turned the water off and grabbed a towel. I dried off and stepped out of the shower. I was just about to grab my panties to put them on when I saw the door open, and in walked Kevin.
“ Kevin!” I screamed, “ Oh my God! Get out!” I grabbed the towel and quickly wrapped it around me.
“ I…I’m sorry!” Kevin said turning around, “ I thought you had finished your shower a long time ago!”
“ Yeah well I didn’t!” I said, “ Now get out!”
“ Yes…sorry!” he said and hurriedly closed the door again.
I giggled a little when I remembered the look of complete and utter surprise on his face when he saw me. But then I realized that Kevin had just seen me naked. I blushed. Why did I blush? It was just Kevin. Not that we saw each other naked all the time, but he was like…Kevin. I finished putting on my clothes and went into the kitchen. Kevin was sitting there reading a newspaper when I came in. I cleared my voice and Kevin looked up at me. Was that a blush I saw creep over his face? All of a sudden I didn’t feel so selfconcious anymore.
“ You can use the bathroom now!” I said as I sat down and grabbed the sports section of the paper.
