Chapter 10
Josh woke up to a warmth against his body. He looked down at Justin and smiled. Last night was wonderful and he found that he was ready to face the day. Justin was off so he slowly made his way out of bed and to the bathroom. After taking a quick shower and making sure Justin was still asleep he went downstairs for coffee. He set the coffee maker and then walked outside to get his newspaper. Reporterre sre still there and still yelling questions to him. He simply got his paper and turned back to the house. He could hear the shower running when he came back inside. He sat at the table and waited for Justin to come down. Ten minutes later he was receiving a very welcome good morning kiss.
“How did you sleep?” Josh asked
“Wonderfully. Why didn’t you wake me when you woke up?” Justin asked
“You’re off and I figured you might want to sleep in.” Josh said.
“Thanks. I see you have the paper. Are there still a lot of reporters out there?” Justin asked
“About the same. What do you want to do today?” Josh asked
“Well I was going to go and see my little brothers.” Justin said
“I thought you didn’t see them.”
“I see them. They don’t see me. They always go to the park on Saturday. I just stand at a distance and see them.” Justin said
“Oh. Do you see your parents?” o. Io. It’s usually with my aunt and her kids. Once or twice my mom was there.” Justin said quietly.
“What time do you go?” Josh asked
“Usually about three. Hey, why don’t yome wme with me? I can at least show them to you.” Justin said
“I’d love to. I need to go and make a few phone calls so I’ll see you in a bit.” Josh said
While Josh went to make calls Justin decided to call Lance, so he got his cell phone out and noticed he had a message. He put in his code and listened.
~ Hey Justin, it’s Lance. Look call me as soon as you get this. I... it’s really important and I don’t want to leave it in a message. I’m off until after four so call. ~
Justin was worried so he called Lance immediately. His friend was hardly ever nervous or upset.
“Hello.” Lance’s voice said
“Lance, what’s going on? Are you ok?” Justin asked
“I’m fine. J, your mom called.” Lance said
{I must be hearing things. He did not say that my mom called. There is no way that she called. Why? What does she want? God I hope the boys are ok.}
“Justin, Justin you there?” Lance said into the phone
“Yeah. I’m here. Did you just say my mom called?” Justin asked
“She did. She said that she wanted to talk to you. She didn’t say what it was about, but I figured you would want to know.” Lance said
“I don’t understand. She hasn’t spoken to me in over a year and now she wants to talk. What the hell does she want?” Justin asked
“Maybe she wants to make amends. You wont know unless you call. Are you going to the park today?” Lance asked
“Of course. I’m taking Josh with me.”
“Really? So is it still a mad house over there?” Lance asked
“Pretty much. I think it will be for a while. Would it be ok if we stayed at the house tonight?”
“You don’t have to ask Justin, you pay rent here as well.”
“I know. I’ll see you later.” Justin said
“Ok. Don’t forget that your mom called. I know you probably don’t want to get your hopes up, but maybe it’s a good thing.” Lance said
“Maybe. Bye Lance.”
“Bye J.”
Justin ended the call and then went downstairs to watch television. He turned on the television, but he wasn’t watching. He was thinking about the fact that his mother called. That was something he wasn’t expecting to ever happen. He didn’t know how to take that. He didn’t know what to think, but more importantly he didn’t know how to feel.
Josh finished his calls and went to find Justin. He saw him sitting on the couch. He stood in the door for a minute waiting to see if Justin would notice him. He cleared his throat not wanting to startle him.
“Hey. You finished your calls?” Justin asked
“I did and guess what?” Josh said
“What?”
“I talked to the police and they are moving the reporters away. They will have to stay two hundred feet away from the house now.” Josh said
“Thats good.” Justin said in a flat voice.
“What’s wrong?” Josh asked
“My mom called.”
“After a year. What did she want?” Josh asked
“I don’t know. She wants me to call her.”
“Are you going to?”
“I guess. Maybe... I don’t know. I’m scared.” Justin said
“Scared of what?” Josh asked
“Of everything. I’ve finally moved on with my life. You know, I’ve settled in and now with one phone call that could all change.”
“What if she’s calling to say they’ve changed their minds. That they’ve had time to think about it and they realize they were wrong.”
“What if they say that and then change their minds again. I don’t know if I could deal with that again.” Justin said.
“Whatever you decide I’ll be there for you. Ok.”
“Ok.” Justin said kissing him.
They were standing at the far side of the park behind a tree when Justin saw his brothers. They were with his aunt and his cousins.
“There they are. The little one is Steven and the one holding his hand is Jonathan.” Justin said.
“They’re cute. I can see the resemblance.” Josh said.
“This can’t be real.” Justin said with surprise in his voice.
“What can’t.”
Justin pointed to a lady with curly blond hair. She walked over and sat next to the lady the children came with.
“That’s my mom.” Justin said
“Do you want to go and talk to her?” Josh asked
“No. I think we should leave now. I don’t want to take a chance of her seeing me.” Justin said
“Ok. Lets go.”
The two walked over to Justin’s car and drove off. They went back to Justin and Lance’s house.
Lance was home talking to Chris when they arrived. The two men were sitting on the floor in front of the television playing with the play station.
“Hey Lance. Chris.” Justin said
“Hey guys. I was just getting ready to leave. Got myself a hot date. Here J, why don’t you take over for me.” Lance said getting up.
“A hot date, anybody I know?” Justin asked laug.
“.
“I hope not. It’s so hard to follow you.” Lance said laughing as he left.
“So how are things with you two?” Chris asked the two men.
“Good. How’s everything back at the compound?” Justin said
“Not bad. We still get calls for you. You’d think they would have stopped by now.” Chris said laughing.
“You would. I mean it’s been a while. It’s not like it matters who they get. It’s all the same in the end.” Justin said.
“Obviously not. You must have been something else.” Chris said
Justin noticed Josh’s expression after Chris’ remark. He would have to remember to ask him about iter.ter. Chris stayed long enough to finish the game and then he left.
Josh and Justin were sitting down eating pizza. The older man had been quiet since before Chris left.
“Does it bother you?” Justin asked breaking the silence
“What?” Josh asked
“That I used to be a whore.” Justin said
“You know it doesn’t.” Josh said
“Are you sure? I mean when Chris mentioned that I still had clients ask for me you got quiet.” Justin said no accusation in his voice.
“It’s not that. It’s just... you seem so casual about it.” Josh said
“How should I be?”
“I don’t know I guess I’ve just never been around when you discussed it with the others. It just shocked me.”
“You mean that we’re not all tragic about the whole thing?” Justin asked
“I guess. I just never figured it for everyday conversation.” Josh said.
“Well it’s a part of who I am Josh. I hope you can accept that. If not you being around my friends, really the only family I’ve had for the last year is going to be kind of hard.” Justin said picking up the empty box and moving to the kitchen.
Josh knew that Justin was upset but he didn’t know what to do about it. He wondered if he was the topic of conversation sometimes. He went to the kitchen where Justin was looking out of the window. He walked up to him and put his arms around his waist.
“I love you Justin. I’m sorry for reacting the way I did.” Josh said kissing him on the neck.
Justin turned so that he was facing Josh. He kissed him deeply. Then pulled back so that he could look him in the eye.
“I love you too Josh, but don’t think that my past is just going to disappear. What I did is always going to be there and you can’t forget it.” Justin said
“I know. I know.” Josh said.
They walked back to the living room each coming to terms with just what that meant.
