Chapter Ten: More Than Just Love
“Well, right now, she seems to be doing alright. Her vital signs are all in the green and she appears to not really need any physical training. However, Miss Thompson might have to spend at least another week in the hospital, and a week resting in bed at home.” The doctor told Karen as she stood in the hallway outside Eve’s room.
She nodded solemnly, still blaming herself for most of what had happened to her best friend. Now, she’d have to take care of Eve on her own to make it up to her best friend. Things just weren’t looking up for her at all this past week. But, somehow, that encounter with Orlando did make her feel better at least a little bit. It was nice to know that someone cared for her… and that someone like Orli would actually try to seduce her. She inwardly blushed, thinking of the situation.
But what about Mike? He would surely be ticked off to find them together in the actor’s living room. If he hadn’t called when he did, Karen had a feeling that she would’ve let Orlando have his way with her and then pretend it never happened. But how could someone even do that? Oh, she had gotten herself into trouble now. Two men liked her at the same time, and one of them had sex in mind while her friend was in the hospital. It was beginning to sound more and more like a soap opera every minute.
“Miss Gabrinski, are you listening to me?”
“Huh? Oh! Yeah, I heard you. And since Eve’s parents aren’t in the states at this moment, I’ll be sure to take care of Eve. I called them while I was walking back here and they told me I could use their bank account to pay for anything and everything.” She took out a card with the account number on it and handed it to the doctor.
He took it, giving her a puzzled look, “Would you mind if we checked that? It’s not that we don’t trust your word, it’s just…”
“I understand, doctor. Don’t worry about it.” She smiled as he walked away and then went back into the room, sighing as she sat down in a chair.
“How goes it?” Greg asked from behind his newspaper. He was the only person in the room besides Karen. The other two went to get a bite to eat for the group whilst awaiting the doctor’s say.
“It goes badly. Man, I really wish I was the one in that bed instead of her.” Karen rubbed her temples, a headache already in full swing.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” He placed the paper down and moved to sit next to Karen. “Do you truly mean that? Do you know how worried Eve would be if you got hurt? How worried Mike and Orlando would be? They’d be far more devastated than you are now. And it’s only because they all know how horrible your week has been. They care for you so much that if you got hurt like this, they would all suffer greatly. Don’t you understand?”
She bit her lip, but said nothing in response. Karen couldn’t find the words to argue back at him because she realized he was right. He was right about her friends and about what was happening in her life, and yet, she barely knew him. She stood up as the two boys came back with bagels for everyone in the room, and then she left them all in silence. They watched her go for a second time that day, but none of them moved to stop her.

The wind blew up the remains of the snow mounds around the shop as a small red head sat out in front of the door. Her trench coat was barely doing anything to keep her warm as she waited for her boss to come back to work. It was around ten o’clock in the morning now, and the small musician wannabe had no idea when her boss was to come back, or if she was even there to begin with. She wondered what was going on.
The night before, her parents had pointed out a news report to her. The newscaster had given a report on what had happened at a local music store and how it was almost robbed. Laina immediately got worried for her job and, of course, the nice girl who had given her that job. A sigh escaped into the air as she checked her watch again. It was only Sunday, but she figured that Karen would at least be home on a nasty day like this. It wasn’t like her to not open the door.
“Where the hell is she?!” She scoffed, kicking a small snow mound.
“Whoa… watch your temper now, or I might just fire you on your first day.”
Laina turned quickly to find Karen standing there, her cheeks flushed from the cold and her breath showing with every huff of air she blew out. She had been running. Upon unlocking the door, the two girls walked into the shop together, hanging up their coats behind the counter before starting anything. Karen put her keys down on top of the counter for easy access.
“I have to make you a key later, okay?” She rolled up her sleeves, getting ready for work.
“Umm, sure. But, umm, where were you? I kept ringing the bell and knocking on the doors, but no one answered.” Laina looked uneasy.
“Oh, well, my friend is in the hospital, so I was taking care of a few things.” She replied, every word said in hesitation.
“I hope that your friend will be okay then.” She smiled, “So, I’m guessing that this was the shop that was on the news last night?”
Karen nodded before explaining what Laina needed to be doing in the shop. She gave the girl cashier duty prior to running up the stairs to feed Sora. He mewed as she walked into the upstairs apartment and then into the kitchen. She picked him up and pet him, snuggling him to her face before placing the white kitten back down on the ground with his food. As he was eating, she knelt near her sweet little cat and stroked his ears and back, loving how he purred.
“You are the cutest thing alive, Sora.” She smiled before getting up and changing her clothing.
Before heading back down the stairs, she had changed into dark jeans complete with a seat-belt belt. Her t-shirt said “Don’t bother me, I’ll bite your head off.” with a picture of a black cat on it. She put her sneakers on and went down the staircase to already find customers wandering around the store. She smiled when she saw that none of them were holding guns at anyone’s head or anything.
After taking the seat behind the counter, she gave instructions to Laina on what needed to be done in the shop. The young girl moved off to do what she was told, like moving boxes in the storage room and helping people find what they needed. More people came in, and soon there was so much hustle and bustle around the store, Karen wasn’t sure what to do anymore. It was an avalanche of people that had invaded her store all at once.
For one thing, she had never had this many people in her store at once, let alone in three days. For some strange reason, people were tempted to go there because the shop had been on the news. Karen only came back to the shop to take her mind off what was going on with Eve, but at that moment, it was hard to keep her mind on more than one thing at a time. So many people were asking many different questions, and she couldn’t even leave the register for long.
“I’m going to need more help in the shop if it’s going to be like this.” She commented to Laina and sighed as the bustle started dying down.
“I don’t think it’ll be like this for long.” She replied back, sweeping a little.
“I really hope not, otherwise I might just jump off one of these buildings. I hate busy days.”
“But, we got a lot of money today, right?” Laina said as she put the broom against the wall and wandered over to the counter.
Karen paused, “Well, yeah. But I didn’t really want to be here as long as I was.” Upon looking outside, she realized the street lights were already on and burning bright.
“So…” The teen interrupted Karen’s train of thought, “Why do you own a music store anyways?”
Karen looked back at Laina, a little surprised at the question. After all, Eve had asked her Dad the exact same thing the first time she came over to play, “Well, it was my dad’s. After my mom left us, he brought me back here and we lived in the apartment upstairs. When he died, I inherited the shop and I’ve been running it ever since.”
“You didn’t change it to a different shop?”
“Nope. I couldn’t. Music is my life. Music will lead the way… that’s what my dad used to say to me.” She smiled at the memory.
Laina nodded, though went off on her own reverie as she closed the shop for Karen. Somehow, the elder girl began to wonder why she had even left her friend there in the hospital with three other men. They didn’t even know Eve, and they were being better friends to her than Karen was at the moment. After all, Eve was the one who was there for Mr. Gabrinski’s funeral. Eve was the only person to talk to the young shop owner. Eve was her only family, her only friend, and she had turned her back and run away from what was troubling her.
By the time those thoughts had rushed into her head, Laina was long gone, probably heading home since it was late, and Karen had run up the stairs. As she wiped away some of the tears, she gathered some things, like Eve’s house keys that she had given the store owner and some clothing. She threw it all in a bag except the keys, which were placed in her coat pocket, and then ran out of her apartment at top speed.
‘Now I see what I’ve done wrong. Now I’ve gotta fix all this.’ She thought.
