Something’s in my throat, it feels weird. I open my eyes and I realize I can only see out of one of them. Something is covering my eye. I try to talk but the thing in my throat won't let me. Where am I?
"Sabrina. Its okay baby. The doctor is on his way."
My mom is squeezing my hand. The doctor? Am I in a hospital? That’s when I become aware of immense pain in my chest and head. Was I in a car accident? I don't remember how I got here. The last thing I remember is waving good bye to Tony and Shortie. Was that a dream? Had I imagined meeting Robbie? Maybe I had been in a coma for a long time and I had dreamt the whole thing. Wait a minute I thought I read somewhere that people in comas don't dream.
Someone with an Aussie accent starts talking to me. I can hear Becky in the background and my father is crying. I haven't seen him cry since the day I got married. I want to tell him not to cry but I can't talk.
The Aussie is still talking to me. "Sabrina, do you understand me?"
I try to nod, but it hurts.
"Good girl Sabrina. You have a tube in your throat to help you breath. I'm going to take it out. Expel all of the air in your lungs when I pull it out okay?"
I nod again. I can feel it sliding out and it makes me gag.
"That’s okay don't fight it." He says.
And then its out. My throat hurts and my mouth is dry. The Aussie hands me a cup of water.
"I'm Dr. Paul Fielding. You've been unconscious for about 36 hours. Do you remember what happened to you?"
36 hours? I shake my head no. "What....?" I try to talk but it hurts.
"Don't try to talk yet Sabrina, drink some more water and rest. Are you in pain?"
I nod it was becoming unbearable.
"I'll get the nurse to give you something. Try to relax and I will talk more with you tomorrow." Dr. Fielding said as he squeezed my hand and then left.
My Mom and Dad are here? Am I in Sydney still? I want to ask them questions but I can't talk. So I am forced to watch and listen. No one is telling me what happened. The nurse came in and gave me a shot of painkillers. I am starting to feel sleepy. I close my eyes and go back to sleep.
"Can I see her?" I asked Becky as soon as I saw her in the waiting area.
"Yes. Marie and Frank left for the hotel to get some rest. We were just about to leave too." She said pointing to Jack.
"How is she?" I asked.
"She can't talk yet because of the tube. But she seemed really good considering." Becky said as she gathered up her purse.
"Does she remember?" I asked.
"No. And we didn't tell her. I don't think any of us knew how to tell her. I think the doctor probably will tomorrow." Becky hugged me and she and Jack left.
I went into Sabrina's room. No tube, it seemed strange not to see the tube. I sat beside her and held her hand. "Thank You." I said quietly. She was going to be all right.
I had been staring at her for several hours when she woke up. She looked at me, her one visible eye widened and then she smiled.
"Bob." She whispered.
"Hello. Don't try to talk. Would you like a drink?" I asked.
She nodded and I held the cup while she drank from the straw. "I thought I dreamt you." Her voice sounded better, the water must have helped.
"I'm not a dream." I said kissing her hand.
"What happened?" She asked me.
"I think we should wait for the doctor of your family to tell you." I said looking away from her.
"Tell me." She said again.
I took a deep breath, how could I tell her? "You were attacked, after you left my room. Hit on the head and knocked out then stabbed."
"Why? Who did this?"
She didn't understand, fuck I didn't understand. "We don't know. The police are looking for him." I answered her. I knew it was coming, I didn't want to be the one to tell her. But I could see the question in her eyes. I wanted to run away but I stayed.
"Was I...raped?" She said the last word so quietly I couldn't hear it but I could read the word on her lips. I looked away.
She cried quietly, knowing my silence was an affirmation.
"I'm sorry Sabrina." I said.
"Don't cry Bob." She said reaching up to wipe my tears. I caught her hand and kissed it.
"I'll try not too. You should get some more sleep. You need to let you body get better." I tell her.
"Ok. Will you stay with me?" She asked.
"I'm not going anywhere." I promise.
"Stabbed at least 23 times, raped, fractured skull, possible long term damage to left eye, broken nose." Those words echoed through my mind. Dr. Fielding had just told me the details.
"You are very lucky Sabrina." He said.
Lucky? Yeah I won the lottery Doc! I didn't feel very lucky. "What about diseases or pregnancy?" I whispered. I was horrified at the thought of those.
"You were given the morning after pill right away, well not really a pill but you get my point. So there is no chance of pregnancy. As for diseases, all the swabs came back negative, but I would suggest you get another test in a month. Just in case."
Oh god.
"You should be able to leave the hospital in a day or two but no flying yet not for at least a month. You have a lot of stitches and you need to stay in bed and rest. Now if you feel up to it there are some detectives from the police here to speak to you." Dr. Fielding told me.
I nodded. I had never spoken to the police before. I was really scared. Get a grip Sabrina you didn't do anything wrong.
Two men came in and introduced themselves "Detective Wildman and Detective Albis." They turned on a mini-tape recorder and then they asked me to tell them everything I could remember. I told them about the concert, dinner with Robbie and then leaving. "Oh my sandals." I thought out loud. I forgot them in his room.
"Those sandals saved your life. Mr. Williams was returning them to you when he found you and summoned help." Det. Albis said to me.
Robbie had found me? I closed my eyes. He must be so traumatized I thought to myself.
"Do you remember seeing anyone in the hall? Or the elevator?"
"The last thing I remember was waving good-bye to Tiny and Shortie...oh wait. There was a couple kissing in the elevator. I thought they were cute."
"Can you remember what they looked like?" Det. Albis asked me.
"No. I'm sorry."
"That’s okay. We need to ask you if you had been sexually active within the previous 48 hours."
I was embarrassed by this. "No."
“Well if you remember anything please call us." Det. Wildman said putting his card on the table.
Just as they were walking out the door, I remembered the man in the elevator. "Oh wait." I said. They immediately came back in. And turned on their tape recorder. "I remember a man, he was about 45, about as tall as you Det. Albis, dark hair with grey at the sides, he was skinny no more than 150 lbs, he had on a blue and grey checkered shirt and black jeans. I don't remember his shoes. Sorry." I said.
"You are sure about this." Wildman asked me.
"Yes, I remember I smiled at him. Do you think it was him?"
They didn't answer that but said "We'd like to show you some pictures, please tell us if recognize anyone in these pictures."
They showed me several pictures that looked as though they came from security cameras. They were from various places in my hotel. On the third picture I saw him. The man from the elevator. I looked at the rest before I answered. The last picture was of the couple from the elevator. "This one is the man and the last one is the couple."
They asked me if I was positive, which I was. They said good-bye and left. Robbie came into my room as soon as they left. He sat down next to me and turned on the TV. "Lets watch some cheesy soap? What do you think?"
I smiled "Ok." He pulled his chair in as close as it would go and held my hand.
They let me go home the next day, but I had no home to go to. I couldn't go back to the hotel. And Becky and Jack's place was too long of a drive for me to travel too. Robbie insisted on me and my parents staying with him.
"You were in the hotel, same as me. How did you miraculously get a house?" I asked him.
"I borrowed it from a friend." He said with a mysterious smile.
I decided that it would be better to stay there. "Okay. But don't you have to do concerts and stuff?"
“I'm still doing the concerts but I'm not doing the interviews." He told me.
Mom came in my room then bringing me some fresh clothes to wear. I still couldn't shower and the bandage on my head would be removed before I left the hospital. They would check the eye patch and decide if it could come off. Robbie left to let Mom help me change. Not that he would have seen anything with all the bandages wrapped around my torso.
I left the hospital in a wheelchair, Robbie had rented a van for handicapped people that lowered and had a lot of room for me to get in. Jack was driving it since Robbie nor my parents could drive in Australia. I had on sunglasses because my eye was sensitive to the light, but the doctor said it looked good and that I should regain most of my previous vision.
The house that Rob had borrowed was a mansion. "Oh my god, who's place is this?" I asked. He just shrugged. When we got inside I was brought immediately to my room, which was on the main floor. There was a huge TV, a DVD player, a video game console and a stereo in my room.
"I didn't want you to get bored." He said with a smile. I was tired so I laid back and tried to go to sleep. I couldn't get comfortable and I was feeling strange. I kept thinking about all the things that had happened to me, not that I remembered but I imagined them. Rob was sitting nearby reading a magazine.
"Bob?"
"Yeah." He answered looking up.
"Could you lay with me?" I asked.
He put down his magazine and gently climbed into the bed with me. "Am I hurting you?" He asked me gently putting his arm around me.
"No its perfect." I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.
