Chapter 10
The small but sleek bathroom, with cream colored floor tiles and deep red walls, was filled to the brim with steam. Adrienne relished in her newly relaxed state that only a nice hot shower could produce. She wiped her hand across the large mirror in front of her and tied her long dark hair into a knot. She had forgotten to bring make up or a toothbrush, but it’s not like she expected to be spending the night at someone else’s house. Luckily, it looked like Hae’s family members were sticklers for oral hygiene since she quickly found a large bottle of mouthwash in the small wooden cabinet under the sink.
well, it’s better than nothing…especially morning breath
Shooting back a capful, she began to swish the pale blue liquid around in her mouth, which was now beginning to feel like it was on fire. She hopped from foot to foot and paced to keep herself occupied as she tried to reach the thirty second recommended dosage time. Finally giving up, she figured however long she had swished around that awful liquid was too long. She spit it out and fanned her watering eyes. At least her pain was of some good she thought as she shook her fist at the now dead germs. Throwing on the same pale pink tank top and baggy white cotton drawstring pants that Hae had loaned her the night before, she opened the door. A strong blast of cold air hit her as it rushed into the steamy bathroom. Shivering slightly, she waved some of the billowing steam out of her face.
The room seemed to be vacant.
guess that everyone went upstairs
Remembering the murderous sounds that had be floating down from the kitchen before she had decided to take a shower, she considered staying in the game room and out of the line of fire….or pots or pans or anything else that had been turned into a projectile; but her stomach protested with a rather loud and ominous grumble. Sighing, she took her hair down and ran her fingers through it a few times to try to make the waviness a little less unruly. She quickly hopped up the stairs to find that everyone had settled in the kitchen. The kitchen was like the rest of the house, sleek and simple. With pale peach colored walls and granite counter tops, it was a lovely contrast of light and dark. The hidden hinged cabinets were painted white and a random few had glass inserted into the door which Adrienne had assumed was purposefully done to show of the delicate porcelain inside. What Adrienne was immediately drawn to was the large island in the center. It was also granite like the counter tops, but it had a built in cutting board and sink. There also seemed to be a hole carved in it to serve for easy trash disposal. Adrienne tried not to let her inner cook drool as she walked over to her…friends. Smiling at the thought she gave a quick wave,
“Morning everyone, how goes it?” she asked as leaned on the white serving bar. The guys seemed to be fully engrossed in a game of cards. Thoughts of poker and gin rummy ran through her mind.
“Yoochun, do you have any jacks?” Junsu asked, nearly quivering in anticipation. Yoochun shook his head, “Go fish…sucker!” he laughed to himself. Adrienne shook her head slightly; so much for sophisticated card games. Hae and Soo had busied them in the kitchen with what looked to be like breakfast or a feeble attempt at one at least. She smelled the slight scent of burning food as she made her way over to the stove where Hae and Soo, both clad in aprons, stood, looking quite perplexed. There were numerous cook books laid out in front of them and various pots and pans and also remnants of what looked like to be many attempts at pancakes and what she thought could have been bacon at one point in time.
“You two look like a couple of fish out of water….is there anything I can do to help?” Adrienne asked as she lowered the flame under the pan in front of Soo. Hae sighed as she took off her apron. “In attempts to keep Junsu’s clumsy self out of the kitchen, I tried to make breakfast…but as you can see, I failed…miserably.” She handed the apron to Adrienne, “Yoochun said that you are a really good cook, which is rather convenient for me, since I’m not.” She smiled. Adrienne shot Yoochun a look, “Nice to know you are pimping me out to be your own personal chef, Yoochun” Adrienne took the apron and smirked, nodding to Hae that she didn’t mind. Yoochun shrugged as he reluctantly gave up a card to Changmin, who smiled and took it gleefully. “It could be worse…” he implied.
Adrienne rolled her eyes and turned to Soo, who was completely abandoned by Hae once she had handed her apron to Adrienne. “So…do you know anything about cooking?” Adrienne asked as she tied the apron around her waist and started closing the cook books in front of her.
Soo frowned, “Not really, I help my mom sometimes but that’s more so just chopping or making rice….hey don’t we need those?” she asked as she watched Adrienne stacking the now closed cookbooks at the end of the counter. Adrienne shook her head and smiled, “Nope, I don’t cook from recipes…well not usually at least. Hey, Hae, is anything in your fridge and pantry usable?” Adrienne asked as she opened the large, brushed stainless steel refrigerator to survey the contents inside. Hae nodded as she took a sip of tea from her small tumbler. “Yupp, feel free to use whatever you want. It should be stocked pretty full considering that I have two younger brothers who will eat anything that isn’t nailed down…not that they wouldn’t try…”
Adrienne grabbed a large bowl of eggs and a small block of cheese that was wrapped in clear, plastic wrap. As she set them on the counter, she realized that Soo was looking at her patiently, waiting for some sort of instruction. “Oh...hmm, Soo could you help me. Ahh, let’s see. The cheese needs to be cut into thin slices and, maybe you could make some rice?” Adrienne asked politely. Soo smiled and nodded as she grabbed the cheese and a knife and set to work. Adrienne made a mental note to give Soo cooking lessons, since she was obviously interested in cooking; it just seemed that she never really had the opportunity to learn.
She continued to search the fridge. She slid a few jugs and containers out of the way before she finally found a large glass jar of kimchi. Even if she hadn’t had much Korean food, she had had kimchi. She didn’t think that there was a single person on the planet who even had a drop of Korean blood who hadn’t. She ticked off a few fingers, going over ingredients in her head. She had decided to make her famous scrambled eggs. Ok, they weren’t her famous eggs per say, they were her aunt’s. But her aunt had divulged the recipe a long time ago, so…close enough. She decided that kimchi and rice were a safe bet also, considering that she was in Korea and needed to adjust a bit to the eating habits of the rest of the people in the room. Deciding that some fresh cut fruit was the best way to round out the meal, she closed the fridge and began to scour the spice racks for everything she needed. Her aunt’s secret was garlic powder. Something about the garlic powder mixed with the cheese; it was utterly delicious.
Adrienne opened a few cabinets and drawers before she finally found large mixing bowls and utensils. She quickly began cracking eggs and whisked in some milk that had already taken out of the fridge when Hae and Soo had attempted to make pancakes. Adrienne glanced at Soo, who had already finished slicing the cheese and had moved on to rinsing the rice. Adrienne inspected the slices of cheese and she was astounded by the quality. Each slice was paper thin but they were all equal in thickness, like they had been cut by someone who studied the culinary arts for years. “Soo, this slicing is incredible, are you sure you don’t know how to cook?” Adrienne asked as she attempted to peer through the paper thin cheese. Soo smiled brightly as she drained the water from the rice. “No, but like I said, I do a lot of prep work for my mom, so I guess just all of those years of chopping, slicing, and mincing paid off.
Adrienne couldn’t argue with that.
“If you ever want some lessons, let me know, I would be more than happy to teach you anything that I’ve picked up over the years.” Adrienne offered as she sprinkled a mixture of garlic powder, salt and pepper. Soo smiled even wider as her eyes lit up, “Really? That would so great. I’ve asked my mom before but she’s never had the time.” Adrienne returned her smile before going to the stove to heat up a large fry pan.
Adrienne loved to teach. She wasn’t sure why. Maybe it was because she got a sense of satisfaction by helping someone. During high school, she had volunteered at a hospital day care and she had also volunteered for her school’s tutoring program. She had toyed with the idea of becoming a teacher, but her love of cooking had swayed her future occupation interests more towards the culinary variety.
She tied back her hair and poured the eggs into the now warm pan. Soo put the rice into the rice maker and flipped the switch to cook before making her way to Adrienne’s side by the stove. Adrienne shifted so that Soo was able to see what she was doing.
“Ok,” Adrienne began, “The first secret to making really good scrambled eggs is to use low heat. It takes a bit longer to cook, but as they say, patience is a virtue.” Adrienne instructed as she gently moved the eggs around in the pan a bit. She handed Soo the spatula so that she could do it. Soo happily took it and mimicked Adrienne’s earlier movement. “The second is a good recipe. My aunt taught me this when I was younger, “Adrienne leaned in and whispered to Soo, “And I’ve never told anyone else, so you’re the first.” Soo smiled and nodded in thanks as Adrienne went on with her lesson, “Now, I combined all the eggs I wanted to use in a bowl and added milk; you can also use half and half. I don’t ever measure but my usual rule of thumb is about…fourteen milliliters per egg.” Adrienne motioned for Soo to give the eggs a little stir, which she did. “And the seasoning is really simple, just garlic powder, salt and pepper. I don’t measure those either, it is just to taste.” Adrienne reached behind her and grabbed the perfectly sliced cheese from the island. “And then, the best part, some cheese!” Adrienne smiled as she started to lay the cheese on top of the cooking eggs. “And it will just melt during the cooking time, you just have to remember to stir it every couple of minutes. Now…I thought about doing just some cut up fruit so I thought that we could have a few things to go with the fruit.” Adrienne continued as she picked up a small carton of cream and poured into a bowl she had chilled earlier. “Now, I’m really going to put you to work,” Adrienne handed the bowl to Soo, along with a clean whisk. “Just start whisking quickly until it’s whipped…and about halfway through add a little bit of sugar.
The two continued on with their cooking lesson as everyone else was playing cards and conversing. Hae had settled her self next to Junsu, who was watching the cooking intensely. “Wow, she seems to be quite competent in the kitchen…” He stated as he leaned his head on Hae’s shoulder, “You wouldn’t happen to want to learn how to cook…would you?” He asked as he grinned innocently. Hae scowled and flicked him on the forehead, “No…not that I’ve not tried. I’m just no good.” Junsu frowned slightly as he gently rubbed the budding red splotch on his forehead from the previous flick he endured. “Hmm, well maybe she will teach me, I’ve always wanted to learn!” He said eagerly, “Maybe I won’t burn so much stuff or get random things thrown at me if I do…” he winked as she smiled at Hae, who blushed slightly.
Yoochun set his cards down and stretched leisurely. The enticing aromas coming from the kitchen coaxed him out of his chair as he followed his nose. Adrienne had emerged earlier looking quite lovely. Her hair was wet and mussed and her cheeks had still had a pink twinge from the warm shower. Yoochun chased away emerging thoughts from his mind as he leaned his elbows on the cold gray granite of the cooking island. “Is there anything I can do?” He asked as she watched Adrienne stir something in a pot. Adrienne smiled to herself and turned, still stirring the bubbling liquid, “Sure,” brushing her heavy bangs out of her face, “but only if you wear a girly apron,” she smirked as she pointed towards a frilly item that was covered in pink and blue flowers. His eye twitched as he glanced nervously from the apron to Adrienne and to the group huddled over the wooden table in the breakfast nook. His gaze returned to Adrienne as he ruminated over the pros and cons.
Ah hell…
He threw his hands up in defeat as he pulled the apron over his head. It was worth it in the end. He could put his manliness on the line for a little bit of quality cooking time with Adrienne, who was looking, again, quite adorable in her own pale blue and green striped apron. He could get used to this…except the apron. “Sure you wouldn’t want to trade…pink is more your color.” He offered with a boyish grin. Adrienne let out a hearty laugh, “And miss seeing you in pink and flowers, not a chance.” She grinned as she turned off the heat under her saucepan and gave the still cooking eggs a bit of a stir. Yoochun sighed and placed his hands on the counter, “Well, put me to work!” he said, smiling.
Adrienne pointed towards the bowl of fruit on the counter, “That needs to be cut up, umm yeah I think that’s it…” she replied as she pushed the eggs around the pan. Soo sighed in exhaustion as she set her bowl of now whipped cream on the counter, “Finally….” She sighed again, “What do I do with it now?” She asked as she set her whisk in the sink. Adrienne thought about how to serve it, “Just leave it in that bowl and you can put it in the fridge till everything is done.” Soo nodded as she wrapped the bowl with plastic wrap, set it in the fridge and pulled off her apron, “I think I deserve a break!” She stated as she hung her apron on a plastic hook by the oven. Adrienne nodded in agreement before she turned back to the cooking island and placed the now done eggs into a large black ceramic bowl and wrapped them to keep them warm.
Adrienne took a moment to take in the sight of the man in front of her. Despite the girly pink apron -though Adrienne had to admit that pink wasn’t a bad color on him- he was quite attractive, more so than she would like to admit at times. That would mean that she was developing some sort of feelings, which wasn’t a good idea. At least that’s what she kept telling herself.
He was quite a bit taller than her…at least a head. His frame was lean but strong and his shoulders were broad. It didn’t take her long for the image to hit home; he looked a lot like Ian, her most current ex. At least his body shape did. His eyes, however, held a sincerity that she had never seen in Ian’s. She blushed slightly as she busied herself by the rice maker. She knew, from that morning they had breakfast together, that she would develop feelings for him. Sure the physical attraction came first, which hadn’t surprised her at all, but the emotional attraction did. She still denied it, chalking it up to just a mixture of lust and the fact that she had avoided males for a while. It didn’t take a genius to see that they butted heads when they first met, but of course, that could have been mistaken as flirting. Adrienne let out a sigh as she scooped the rice into a large cobalt blue bowl. She had no idea how she ended up in this situation and she had yet to decide if she wanted to remain it. Was she really ready to break down the well constructed walls around her heart? She didn’t know. They had been there for so long that part of her couldn’t imagine herself without them. She didn’t want to be that vulnerable again.
“Min, I’m done slicing, what now?” Yoochun asked as he dropped the last piece of fruit into a large bowl and set down his knife on the wooden cutting board. He set his hands on his hips and admired his work as Adrienne peeked around his arm. “Um…ok, great; that means everything is ready!” Adrienne said as she quickly drizzled the honey and orange juice mixture that she had previously cooked on the stove onto the fruit. “Yoochun, could you please get the whipped cream out of the fridge.” Adrienne asked politely as she pulled off her apron. Yoochun nodded and retrieved the rather delicious looking cream from the refrigerator. “Well, you seem to have out done yourself Min. This all looks great. Not to mention, those eggs smell so good.” He said, giving her a slight pat on the back before nervously resting his hand back by his side. Adrienne smiled, “Thank you, a chef always likes to her when her work is appreciated. Hey, everyone! This is all ready, come help yourselves!” Adrienne invited as she unwrapped everything.
Everyone crowded into warm kitchen and began to dig into the food. Adrienne helped herself to some eggs and fresh fruit. She hadn’t been able to bring herself to eat kimchi in the morning. You can take the girl out of America, but not the American out of the girl, so the saying goes. She heard a moan come from Hae’s general direction, “Min…these eggs are so good…” Adrienne smiled as she finished eating a strawberry with cream, “Thanks, but I can’t take all the credit for this breakfast. Soo helped a lot, as did Yoochun. A chef is only as good as her soux chef…or chefs in this instance,” she replied for popping a peach slice in her mouth. She internally moaned to herself. The fruit quality here was amazing compared to the states, even at the peak of the season.
Soo smiled brightly as she was praised by Jae, who gave her a kiss on the cheek. Adrienne continued to eat and enjoy the scene in front of her. She hadn’t expected to make friends so fast. She always had really good intuition when it came to people…well except boys. The saying “love is blind” seemed all too true for her. These people were good people, and she was more than ready to trust them as her friends.
After breakfast everyone had decided that it was time to disperse. Everyone seemed pretty tired from the impromptu party and Hae wanted a chance to clean before her family got back. Promising to wash and return Hae’s clothes, Adrienne packed up the rest of her stuff and waited for Yoochun to say his goodbyes. “Oh,” Adrienne caught herself before she forgot, “Soo, here is my number if you want to take me up on those cooking lessons!” Adrienne said as she quickly wrote down her phone number on a spare piece of paper. Soo nodded and smiled, “Thanks so much, I will definitely call you!” Adrienne and Yoochun waved good bye as they finally made it out to his car.
“That really was delicious, thanks for breakfast…again” he said as she opened the car door for her. Adrienne waved dismissively as she sat down, “It’s no big deal, I was just helping out. It’s the least I could do for Hae since she let us all crash there.” Yoochun tossed their stuff in the back seat as he made his way to the driver’s side. “Yeah, well it happens, it’s not the first time. I’m sure she really appreciated you cooking, since she is widely known for her lack of culinary skills,” he laughed as he started the car. “So, back to you’re place?” he asked, putting the car into gear. Adrienne nodded as she put on her sunglasses, “Yupp, I should be getting home before my mom starts to really worry about me. Plus I want to start looking for an apartment in the next couple days, so I need to talk to her about that.” Adrienne replied, leaning back in her seat. “Hey, thanks again for watching over me last night, it really was sweet of you. I’m not used to that kind of treatment by guys.” She finished with a whisper and averted her gaze from Yoochun. He frowned as he came to a stop at a stop light. “It really wasn’t a problem, I mean, that’s what friend’s do right?” he continued, “And if any guy doesn’t see that you are worthy of being cared for, then they are blind.” He smiled. Adrienne blushed slightly and gave his had a nervous pat. “Thank you, that really does mean a lot to me,” she sniffled slightly. Resting her head on her palm, she did her best to rein in her emotions. The last thing she needed to do was break down in front a guy, a guy that she might like even, that she barely knew.
Yoochun did his best not to interfere in whatever emotional turmoil that was clearly eating away at Adrienne. He was concerned; that was obvious, but he wasn’t sure if he intruding in an area that he was unwelcome. But damn he wanted to be welcome! It was eating away at him. He had wanted to talk to her about his feelings, which was something new for him. Usually he was pegged the tall, dark, handsome mysterious type. However, there was something about her that dragged the softer side out of him. He hadn’t decided if he liked it or not, but it seemed to be a moot point anyway. There was no fighting the inevitable. He might have only known her for a few days, but, it seems he was getting attached.
He pulled the car up to the entrance gate and waited for it to open. The ornate black rot iron gate slowly creaked open, permitting them to enter. He drove around the large circular driveway and parked in front of the large stone fountain. “Well, home sweet home…” He said as he pulled himself out of the car. Adrienne opened her own door and let herself out before Yoochun had the chance to open it for her. Yoochun gather her belongings and tucked them under his arm. “Let me walk you to your door?” He asked, flashing a charming smile. Adrienne blushed, “Well, seeing as you have my things, I don’t have much of a choice do I?”
“Nope!” He laughed.
They slowly proceeded up the white stone steps to the large, mahogany front door. As usual, it was opened by the butler. Yoochun wondered if he ever got tired of just standing there waiting to open doors for people.
“Well, thank you, for everything…” Adrienne said as she took her belongings from Yoochun. He nodded and held his hands behind his back. “No problem, hope to do it again sometime” he blushed.
“Most definitely…as long as I don’t have to get drunk again, “ Adrienne laughed as she shifter he bag under her arm and stared intently, as if the small potted trees had become the most interesting thing on the face of the earth.
oh just tell him for the love of….
“Min! You finally return! I was about to call you.” Adrienne’s mother greeted her warmly as she walked briskly through the doorway. She gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and rested her arm around her daughter’s shoulders. “Oh…you must be Yoochun. Adrienne’s cousin has told me so much about you.” She said, bowing slightly to Yoochun.
Adrienne rolled her eyes, going over all the horrendous things that Ha- Jung probably told her mother. Yoochun went slightly ashen as the same thoughts began running through his head.
“Uhh, yes, I’m Yoochun. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m sorry that I didn’t properly introduce myself before taking your daughter out last night. Please forgive my rudeness.” He stated, bowing politely. Adrienne’s mother waved her hand, brushing his apologies aside, “Oh nonsense, my daughter probably dragged you out of her before I could get my claws into you anyway. She has seemed to have perfected the art of parental avoidance over the years. Anyway, I trust her judgment, I’m sure that you are respectable young man. That being said, I hope that you will join us this weekend. Min’s grandmother is throwing some sort of annual party of hers. I would love for you to come and give me the opportunity to get to know you better. I’m sure Min would also love for you to come.” Her mother smiled at her, giving her a slight squeeze. Adrienne narrowed her eyes in suspicion. Her mother was up to something; she could feel it.
“Oh…well, I would be honored, thank you for the invitation. I’m sure that I will be able to attend.” Yoochun nodded and smiled, “Though I should be going, my parents are probably wondering where I am. Thank you again.” Yoochun bowed and swiftly walked to his car. Adrienne waved as she watched him slowly drive around the driveway, through the large gate, and disappear down the street. Once he was out of view she turned to her mother, rather purposefully.
“And what, may I ask, was that about?” She asked, clutching her bag to her side as she attempted to put her hands on her hips. “I know that look…” She continued as she stepped inside and removed her heels. Adrienne’s mother’s face fell in mock shock as she placed her had gently on her chest, “Why, Min, whatever do you mean…” she smiled, “Oh dear, do you realize that he is the first boy that you’ve gone out with since Ian?”
no mother…I seemed to miss that… Adrienne rolled her eyes
“Ok…what’s your point?” Adrienne asked as she made her way to the side staircase. Placing her hand on the dark wooden handrail, she waited for her mother to follow her, as she would undoubtedly do.
“Well, since I like to think I know you rather well…I would say that there is something special about this Yoochun, if you are willing to even give him a chance.” She placed her arm around her daughter’s waist and gave her a hug as they climbed the stairs, “I just want to see you happy.”
Adrienne softened and placed her other arm around her mother, “Thanks. He is really nice. My lack of apprehension, as it were, for him to take me out, caught me a bit off guard actually. But I guess we will just have to see where it goes…so what’s this about a party?” Adrienne asked as they finished climbing the stairs and continued down the long hallway to Adrienne’s bedroom. “Don’t worry about it now,” her mother replied, “We’ll go over it tonight at dinner, be sure you are there. It will start promptly at six thirty.” With that, she gave her daughter a quick kiss on the cheek and continued down the hallway. Adrienne blew out her breath as she entered her room. She tossed her things on the small cream colored sitting chair and threw herself on her bed. She snuggled into the covers and sighed happily. No harm in taking a nap before dinner.
