She lay in bed blankly staring at the drab, white ceiling.
She wanted to sleep.
She needed to sleep.
But she just couldn't get him out of her head.
For the last three weeks she'd heard hide nor hair from him, and no matter how hard she tried, his haunted look....haunted her. She had wanted to talk to him, wanted to ask him what was really the matter. She wanted to know if he was okay. She'd left several messages, but none of them had been returned. She was trying to come to grips with what had really happened. She didn't want to accept the facts that were laid out so painfully obvious in front of her eyes.
Did he....was he just using me?
Even the briefest thought of what they'd been doing before his spontaneous meltdown made her blush intensely. She could feel her face heating as she thought about the frenzy of their bodies together. How had she let things get so far out of control? That just wasn't like her. Especially on a first date. Especially since her parent's had died. She'd become so much more reserved and cautious. But Gerard possessed something that brought out this intense desire in her. Absolute passion. She wanted nothing more than to be with him. It just seemed so right.
There I go again. How the hell do I keep losing sight of the bigger picture when I think about him?! He FREAKED OUT! That should scare me away. Shouldn't it?
How could him using her be right? That's what it had been. Hadn't it? One night of hot, passionate sex, and then.....? She never heard from him again.....
She was interrupted from her thoughts by the sudden ring of the telephone. She looked at the bright red numbers on the front of her clock radio. 1:57 am.
Fuck, who's calling me now?
She let the phone ring and ring. She didn't really feel like answering it. So she didn't. It rang and rang and rand, seeming to go on forever. Just when she was about to grab it out of sheer annoyance the machine picked up. She heard her voice floating through her open bedroom door from the kitchen.
"Hello, this is Versailles answering machine. I'm busy right now, so you know what to do! Beep!"
"Versailles?" The breath she had just inhaled caught in her throat and her heart thumped in her chest. It was him.
"Versailles," he repeated into the answering machine, "it's Gerard. Uh....I'm really.....I'm sorry for calling at such an odd hour, and that I didn't return your calls sooner. I had a business trip out of town. Um......I'd really like to talk to you, if you don't hate me. I feel like I owe you an explanation for......that night. I just can't bear the thought of you hating me......So, when you get this, I'd really be glad to hear from you. Okay. Thanks. Goodnight."
She heard the click as he disconnected. She lay there completely still for what seemed like hours, but was in fact probably minutes. She kept feeling like he was there, just behind her door, or just outside, under her balcony.
She wished that he was. She wanted to see him so badly.
She felt a small, salty tear slip down her cheek. Why am I crying?
Because you want to be comforted.
Yeah, but I was fine before he called....why do I feel so lonely now?
You were not fine before he called. And you always feel lonely. Except.....
Except when I'm with him.
She lay in bed silently, sniffling every once in a while at the tears that kept threatening to fall. She did feel lonely. She was all alone. She had no immediate family. She had very few close friends. But when she was with Gerard, she forgot about all that. She forgot about her parents leaving her all alone. She forgot that she had no one. Because for that short little while that she was with him, she had him. She wondered if he felt the same way that she did. She knew he had some dark secrets of his own hidden in his past. She wanted him to trust her with them the way she had trusted him with hers. But of course, she knew that he didn't know everything about her yet either. And hopefully when he was ready he would tell her everything.
Again, I keep thinking like we're together or something, and we're NOT! I've had one extremely weird date with the guy. Get over it Versailles!
Her eyes started to get heavy and she finally closed them with the thought that somehow, she knew that she wanted things to work out between them. And when sleep finally came, it was as dreamless as death, as it had been since that night with Gerard.
