Chapter Nine
Dialing the phone, Shane took a deep breath. This was the one thing that he knew could bring Kian out of his self-imposed misery. It didn’t break Shane’s heart to see Jodi go, but he knew that Kian was hurting inside. He hated seeing his best friend like this. Just then the other line picked up. “Hello, can I speak to Emmy please?”
“Just a minute, can I ask who is callin’?” A young voice came across the line.
“Can ya tell her its Shane.”
Suddenly there was a loud gasp followed by a squeal. “Oh my god! Shane?” Then there was a bunch of yelling in the background. “Emmy it’s Shane! Oh my god I’m talkin’ to Shane Filan!”
Shane smiled as he chuckled softly. “I take it this is Bridget?”
“How do ya know it’s me?” Came the response.
Still chuckling, Shane shook his head in amusement. “Kian grumbled somethin’ about me bein’ your favorite. It’s nice to talk to ya, Bridget.”
“It’s very nice talkin’ to ya Shane. Oh here’s Emmy. Hope to talk to ya again. Bye Shane.” Bridget giggled as she handed the phone to her cousin.
“Shane?” Emmy’s soft voice came on the line.
“Hey Emmy, yea it’s me.” Shane answered.
“What’s going on?” There was concern in Emmy’s voice.
Shane knew that it would be better to cut to the chase. He was starting to understand that Emmy knew Kian that any of them ever could. “It’s Kian. He needs you.”
“I’m on my way.”

“I can’t believe that we’re gonna see Westlife.” Bridget grabbed Emmy’s arm excitedly as they approached the hotel. She peered her eyes to see just how far they were from their destination.
“You promised to be good?” Emmy felt stupid talking to a fourteen-year-old like that but her mind wasn’t on the rest of the boys. It was on Kian. When Shane called, her heart leapt up in her throat. When he said that Kian needed her, she couldn’t get here fast enough. When she called him back to confirm her travel plans, she found out that it was much worse than they thought. Kian locked himself up in his hotel room and refused to see anyone. Shane was hoping that she would be the one person who could reach him.
“Ya know I will.” Bridget nudged her cousin. “I know ya are here to make sure Kian is ok.”
“Do you have a habit of listening to private telephone conversations?” Emmy peered over Bridget. “What is it with you?”
“No, I didn’t listen in on your phone call. But I could tell from the pale look on your face and when ya said we were leavin’.” Bridget reasoned.
Just then they arrived at the hotel. The cab pulled up and as soon as it reached the curb the door was flung open. Emmy looked up to find Shane holding out a hand for her. Giving him a gentle smile, she let him help her out. “Hello Shane.”
Seeing Emmy was like a light at the end of the tunnel. Shane reached forward and gave her a friendly hug. “Hey darlin’. Thank ya so much for comin’. It’s gettin' bad. We have a show tonight and he didn’t go to soundcheck.”
“I’ll do what I can, but what happens if he won’t talk to me?” Emmy asked worriedly.
“I don’t think we’ll have to worry about that.” Shane smiled.
Before Emmy could speak, she heard someone clearing their throat. She started laughing softly as she moved out of the way. “Oh I’m sorry. Shane I brought someone with me. Actually I couldn’t leave her home if I wanted to. This is my cousin, Bridget.”
Shane looked past Emmy and smiled at the young girl that got out of the cab. Kian had told him all about Emmy’s cousin and how she was a huge fan of his. He reached out and offered his hand to Bridget. As she took it she looked up, only to have her jaw drop. “Come on love, we can’t have ya left behind.” He winked at her.
Bridget just stared at him, trying to come up with something intelligent to say. Any words would work at this point. “Oh my god, Shane Filan.” She cringed at how stupid it sounded. “Um..it’s very nice to meet ya.”
Shane bent down and gave Bridget a peck on the cheek as he smiled. “It’s nice to finally meet ya Bridget. I hope you’ll have fun with us while you’re here.” Both he and Emmy grinned as Bridget turned bright red.
“Where is he?” Emmy got straight to the point.
“In his room. Come on, I’ll get ya settled and then ya can go see him.” Shane nodded towards the bell boy to get the bags. He moved in between Bridget and Emmy offering his arm to both. “I like bein’ between two beautiful ladies.”
Emmy rolled her eyes as Bridget giggled. “Yea now I can see why Gilly loves you, Filan.” Emmy grinned.
“And I can see why Kian loves you.” Shane whispered to her as he walked into the hotel with them.
Emmy almost tripped as Shane’s words got to her. As they walked over to the reception desk, his words buried themselves deep into her mind. There was no way he could be serious, could he?
* * * * * *
“Ok, he’s in this room.” Shane nodded towards the door. “Just go on in.”
Emmy stared at the door and sighed. The thought of Kian in there for two days, not eating or sleeping brought tears to her eyes. If there was any chance she could help him, she would stop at nothing. “I’ll do what I can.”
“That’s all we can ask, love.” Shane rubbed her back. “Oh and don’t worry about Bridget. Me and the lads will keep her busy.” He grinned.
“Thanks Shane.” Emmy gave him a tired smile.
“No, thank ya Emmy.” Shane gave her a quick kiss on the cheek as he began to walk down the hallway.
Turning to stare at the doorway, Emmy took a long deep breath. Grasping the door handle in her hand, she slowly opened the door. The first thing that hit her was just how messy the room was. Clothes littered the floor. Suitcases laid thrown open in the middle of the room. She could see trash piling up on the hotel desk. Stepping in, she closed the door behind her. Her eyes darted around to find Kian. At first she didn’t see him.
Then turning her head she found him on the bed. He was leaning against the headboard as he clutched the covers to his bare chest. He leaned his weary head on his hand as his eyes were closed. Even from this distance she could see the dark circles under his eyes. There was a look of ultimate sadness on his face, which caused Emmy to gasp softly. His hair was messed up as if he hadn’t even made an effort to get out of bed.
“Kian.” She said his name softly as she came to stand in front of the bed.
His eyes snapped open as he heard her voice. Only moving his eyes, he stared at her. The sadness was still on his face but his eyes carried a look of hope. Clutching the covers tighter to his body, Kian couldn’t believe what he saw. He blinked several times but she was still there. “Emmy?” His voice came out low.
Giving him her calm warming smile as she came around to the side of the bed. “I’m here Kian.” She reached out and ran her fingertips lightly through his messed up hair.
Letting go of the covers, without warning, Kian reached out to snatch her up as he pulled her down onto his lap. Emmy gasped as she grabbed his shoulders in an effort to support herself. Adjusting her legs, she ended up straddling his thighs. His strong muscular arms wrapped around her as he buried his head in her neck. “Oh god Little One, tell me I’m dreamin’.” His voice came out hoarse as he rocked her in his arms.
“No, Kian you’re not dreaming. I told you if you ever needed me, I would be there for you.” Emmy murmured against his temple as she stroked the back of his neck soothingly.
Kian looked up and he found the solace in the emerald depths of her eyes that he had been looking for. Reaching up he stroked her cheek. “Ya have no idea how happy I am to see ya here.” There was a heaviness to his voice. His eyes filled with unshed tears.
“What happened, Kian?” Emmy asked the question gently. “Talk to me.”
Swallowing hard, Kian let his head fall against her’s. “It’s over. Jodi walked out for the last time.” There was no regret in his voice, only certainty. He found he couldn’t stop touching Emmy. His fingers grazed the soft skin of her face.
“What? Why did she leave?” Emmy looked at him in shock.
Taking a deep breath, Kian laid it all out about the Globe. “I can’t believe they snuck right in and took that picture. I was tryin’ to protect ya from all this, Little One. I don’t want any of the press botherin’ ya.”
“Me? What about you? You can’t even visit one of your friends without them taking a picture and turning it all around.” Emmy quickly jumped to his defense. “I had no idea it was this bad.”
Hearing her words for him, Kian just stared at her in wonder. Here he was worried about her, and the only thing she could think about was him. Hugging her tightly, he laid her head on his shoulder as he rubbed her back. “What would I do without ya, Little One?” He whispered to her.
There were several moments of silence as they just held each other. Kian rubbed her back as she ran her fingers through the hair near the nape of his neck. He closed his eyes and his grip tightened on her. He still couldn’t believe that Emmy was here. How many nights had he wished for this very thing? He rocked her back and forth, just loving the feel of her in his arms.
“But that couldn’t have been the reason Jodi left, Kian. It wasn’t was it?” Emmy lifted her head to look into his soft blue eyes. When she saw the guilt in Kian’s eyes, she sighed. “Tell me.”
“Well, when I was kissin’ on Jodi.” Kian looked down.
A part of Emmy didn’t want to hear this. The last image she needed was of Kian and Jodi locked in a passionate kiss. “Go on.” She urged.
“All I could think about was kissin’ you and I called out your name.” Kian whispered in a rush.
That was the last thing that Emmy would thought she would hear. Her eyes widened and her grip on his shoulders tightened. “Are you serious?” Her voice betrayed her shock.
Kian nodded as he continued to look down. “She left and I told her never to come back.”
“Why did you call out my name?” Emmy knew she had to ask the question.
Very slowly as if he were seeing her for the first time, Kian raised his head to look into her eyes. “Because when I was kissin’ on her, all I could think of was the way it felt to kiss you.” When he saw Emmy’s eyes go wide, he reached out to caress her cheek. “Do ya know that’s all I have been thinkin’ of since that night? God Emmy no one has ever kissed me like that.”
“Kian I told you I didn’t want to come between you and Jodi.” Emmy didn’t know what else to say.
“Emmy do ya realize since I found ya again, there hasn’t been anyone else in me mind?” Kian asked in disbelief. “As much as I try to tell myself that you’re one of me oldest and dearest mates, all I can think about is that kiss.”
Closing her eyes, Emmy nodded slowly. She couldn’t lie, especially to Kian. That kiss they shared had crossed her mind more times than she would like to admit. Opening her eyes, her vision was blurred by the tears forming in them. “Oh Kian…”
He watched as a lone tear began to fall. His thumb came up to brush the salty drop aside. “I never meant to make ya cry, Little One. I never meant for any of this.” For the first time there was real regret in his voice.
“There you go again, Kian. You misunderstood me again.” Emmy raised her hands and cupped his face. “I’m crying for you. I feel so guilty for coming between you and Jodi. You were so happy with her-“
Kian quickly stopped her as he pressed a finger against her lips. “No, Emmy. I thought I was happy with her. Then you walked back into me life. If you are gonna tell me that you are gonna walk out on me again, I’ll be forced to keep ya here.” He looked into her eyes. “Don’t leave me again, Emmy. Ever.” His voice cracked.
Hearing the anguish in his voice, Emmy wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him tight. “I’m not going anywhere, Kian.” She closed her eyes as she laid her head on his shoulder.
Kian pulled her tight against his chest, as he whispered in her ear. “Tell me Little One, do ya ever think about that kiss?” He brushed his lips against the sensitive part of her ear. His fingers delved into the honey colored softness of her hair. When she lifted her head, he moved so he could look at her.
Emmy found that she once again was without words as she stared into the endless blue pools of Kian’s eyes. She had always loved his eyes. Eyes were the windows to the soul, and with Kian it especially rang true. She couldn’t lie to him, not that she ever could. Right now nothing less than the truth would work. As her tongue darted out to sweep across her lower lip, she noticed the catch in Kian’s breath. With a voice soft as the wind, Emmy spoke. “All I can think about is that kiss.”
Kian let out the breath he had been holding. It was as if a huge weight had been lifted. He thought that the kiss was only something that he had cherished. Sliding his fingers deep into her hair, he cupped her head. As he pulled her head to his, he began to whisper. “All I can think about is you, Emmy. All I can think about is that kiss, and how it didn’t satisfy me.”
“It didn’t? Then why do you keep thinking of it?” Emmy asked in genuine surprise.
“Because it wasn’t enough, Little One.” Kian lowered his head as he nuzzled her cheek.
“Wasn’t enough?” Emmy’s voice squeaked a bit as she put her hands on his shoulders.
“No, I need more.” Kian groaned as he slanted his lips over her’s. Before she could protest, his lips covered her’s. Once again he wasn’t going to give her a chance to get away. Moving his lips over her’s, he started out slow. Kian thought that he had to have been dreaming. While one hand held her head to his, the other began to slowly stroke her back up and down. The kiss started out soft but when Emmy opened her mouth, Kian quickly changed that. Using his tongue, he expertly parted her lips as he began to deepen the kiss.
The instant that Emmy felt Kian’s lips on her’s, she melted against him. She couldn’t kid herself. She constantly thought about the kiss they shared. Now that it was happening again, she was powerless to stop it. When she felt his tongue enter her mouth, she quickly reached out and flicked the tip of her tongue against his. Hearing Kian moan, she began to rock her hips against him unknowingly. Then the kiss shifted to a sensual duel. Her tongue would dart out to taste his, then as if returning the favor his tongue would do the same.
Holding her against him, Kian was in sheer heaven. His hands began to slide down her back to come down to cup her bottom. As he pulled her against him, he moaned in her mouth as she rocked against him. This kiss was deeper than the first and much more erotic. He began to suck on the tip of her tongue, then swirled his own tongue around it.
As Kian pulled her closer to him, that was when Emmy got the first hint of just what Kian wasn’t wearing under the sheet. She could feel his hardness pressing up against her as she straddled his lap. With the kiss slowly ending, she pulled back a bit. Her breath was coming rapidly as she held onto him for support. This went way beyond what the first kiss did. Yet, she found that she wanted more and that scared her. “Tell me that you have some boxers or something on underneath.” There was a light teasing tone to her voice as if she was trying to cover up the panic she felt inside.
Cupping her face in his fingertips, Kian softly kissed her again. “If I told ya that, I’d be lyin’.” For the first time in two days he let a smirk cross his face. It seemed Emmy was the only one who could draw him out of his misery. “God Emmy I know it’s only been twice, but I can’t help it. I’m findin’ I love kissin’ ya, Little One.”
The thick Irish accent of his poured from his lips and purred in her ear. Everything was happening so fast but there was no way she could deny it. She found that she loved kissing Kian also. The thought of him naked under the covers sent a tingle up her spine. “What does this mean, Kian? What are we doing?”
“I haven’t got a fuckin’ clue, baby.” Kian asked as he pulled her against him. Kissing the top of her head, he fought a moan as he felt her fingertips brush over his bare chest.
“I’m so scared Kian. I’m scared of losing your friendship.” Emmy whispered against his throat. “Having this makes me realize just what we could lose.” What I could lose.
“Look at me, Little One.” Kian moved her so that he could look in her eyes. “No matter what happens between us, our friendship won’t be ruined.” Kian stroked her cheek. “But is it so wrong to see if we are more than friends?” He knew he was taking a big chance asking this, but it would kill him to hold back.
“Can we just take one step at a time?” Emmy asked shyly. For some reason she found herself blushing.
Giving her one of his trademark smiles, Kian pulled her into his arms. “Of course, Little One. We can take our time. We’ve all the time in the world.”
Lying against his chest, Emmy looked up at him. “I promised Shane that I would have you ready in time for the concert.”
“Is that who brought ya here?” Kian asked surprised. He hadn’t thought about the details of her arrival until now.
“He called and said you needed me so I came right away.” Emmy told him.
“You came for me?” There was a sense of awe to Kian’s voice.
“I told you that if you ever needed me, I would be there.” She snuggled deeper into his arms.
“You are truly me guardian angel, Little One.” Kian closed his eyes as he hugged her tight. Then he opened his eyes and looked down. “You’re comin’ to the concert, right?”
“Well I have Bridget with me-“
“Bridget’s here?” Kian was now grinning. “You two are comin’. I want me best girl to be front and center tonight.”
Emmy laughed softly against his chest as she stroked it. “I’m looking forward to it. Somehow I don’t think the dvds are going to compare to hearing you sing live.”
Looking over at the clock, Kian quickly jumped up. “I’m gonna be late. Can’t be late to me own concert.” Then he realized just how naked he was under the covers. “Oh hell.”
Leaning over and giving him a small kiss, Emmy started to get up. “I’ll let you go and get ready. I also need to get dressed for tonight.” She stood up and as she was going to walk to the door, Kian reached out to grab her gently by the wrist.
“I don’t know how I can thank ya Little One.” Kian raised her hand and kissed her palm.
“I’m sure you’ll find a way.” Emmy smiled.
“That I will darlin’.” Kian winked as he watched her walk out of the room. When she was gone, he found he couldn’t stop smiling. To think she came all the way just because Shane told her that he needed her. As he got up out of bed, he felt a bit lighter and for that he couldn’t thank his Emmy enough.
