Chapter 10
xx Skylar
I was worried. After you told your family about the baby your family changed. I wasn't stupid, Lauri. I knew they weren't happy that I was American and that your child would be half of my heritage. If I read between the lines right I'd come to the conclusion that they didn't want me around. So that's why my parents and I had you book us a hotel room for the remainder of our stay in Helsinki.
"Sweetheart don't," you said as I gathered my belongings and stuffed them into my travel bag.
"Lauri I can't pretend like they like me," I said as I brushed past you.
"Sky just stop would you," you said and grabbed my wrist pulling me towards you. "You have to fight. If you really love me you'll fight this," you said and touched my stomach, making me stop. "You're getting bigger," you said as you placed both of your hands on my ever expanding roundness. "Do you have any idea how beautiful you are pregnant with my child?"
"How beautiful?" I asked shyly not believing it. I knew the truth, I looked like shit.
"Your belly fits you. You're so small but your basketball stomach just makes you even more special to me."
"Is that right?" I asked as you wrapped your arms around me pulling me closer to your body.
"I wouldn't lie to you," you told me as you put your face inches from my ear. "Now just stay here with me." I pulled out of your embrace.
"For the last time…we can't," I said and removed myself entirely from your arms. "It's too uncomfortable," I repeated myself as I finished stuffing my bag, zippering it shut. "You could always stay with us."
"I couldn't," you said. "I haven't seen my family in so long."
"Well, come visit me in the morning," I said and grabbed my heavy suitcase.
"I'll drive you there," you said and took the suitcase from my grasp. "Would you stop picking up heavy things? You'll hurt yourself."
"Lauri I'm pregnant not incapable of doing things!" I exclaimed annoyed but secretly it made my heart melt that much more. It was the little things that mattered to me, and you were finally realizing it.
"Is there anything I can do to convince you to stay here?" you asked giving me a pout.
"I don't feel comfortable here. I know when I'm not welcome," I said and moved forward going down the stairs. We met my parents and you grabbed your keys. "He's bringing us there," I said to them and they nodded.
"I'll be back!" you shouted and got a few mumbled replies in which I didn't understand.
Leading us out to your car you opened the trunk and packed our bags away. Opening my door I lowered myself into the car and secured my seatbelt. With my parents and you in the car you looked at me, started the engine, and backed out of the driveway.
"I miss you," you said later that night.
"I miss you too," I said. "Won't you get in trouble?"
"Sweetie, I'm twenty-seven not seven," you said and I just knew you were rolling your eyes. I giggled.
"I keep forgetting that," I said through a giggle.
"Very funny," you replied. "So I was thinking tomorrow I'd show you around Helsinki," you said.
"Sounds nice," I said. "But what about my parents?"
"I've already set them up all day to go to a Day Spa to get pampered," you confessed.
"Are you serious?" I asked. "You really did that for my parents?"
"Yes," you said.
"I'm sure my parents will love it. Kiitos," I said thanking you in your language.
"You're welcome sweetheart," you said. "Get some sleep baby. I'll be there around nine," you said and I made a kissing noise into the speaker. "What was that?" you asked alarmed.
"I gave you a kiss," I said. "I'll see you in the morning," I said and paused. Should I say it again?
"At nine," you said. I heard you putting down the receiver and I yelled your name. "What?" you asked coming back on the phone.
"I love you," I said hurriedly and hung up quickly.
I sighed as I leaned back against my pillows. I tried to stop the warmth of my tears as they streamed down my face and onto the pillow. If only you would return my love.
xx Lauri
I sat up nearly all night thinking of my plan. So far it wasn't going the way I wanted it to, but I was sure I'd make my family see what I saw in you. When I woke the next morning I quickly dressed and went downstairs to the kitchen.
"Morning," I said in Finnish to my parents. My mom was making breakfast while my father sat at the table reading the newspaper.
"Sleep well?" my mother asked as I walked over to her, kissing her cheek.
"Somewhat," I told her.
"Don't tell me you're thinking about her," she said. I gave my mother a disappointed look.
"Mom, she's my girlfriend. You guys have got to open up to her. I plan on having her around for a long time," I said.
"She is having your baby so of course she's going to be in our lives," my father said from the table.
"Don't you even want to make it work?" I asked.
"Lauri, she's a very nice girl and her parents are lovely but…" I cut my mother off.
"But what mom?" I asked annoyed. "She's having my baby and I love her." My mother stopped what she was doing and looked at me.
"You love her? Lauri you don't even know her!" she exclaimed. "You do this with every girl you meet. You think you're in love, but look where it gets you – heartbroken."
"She's different," I said defending you. "It's different. She told me she loves me."
"They all do son," my father said. "And we know it's only to get one thing from you. You're well-known son. People are going to use you to get to your money. This baby might not even be yours. It could be a plot."
"I can't believe I'm letting you talk this way about my girlfriend. The woman I plan to marry!" I exclaimed.
"Lauri sweet cheeks, you're not going to marry an American," my mother said and touched my shoulder. I shrugged her off.
"Don't tell me what I'm going to do," I said with harshness in my voice. "Finn's are supposed to be kind and friendly people. Since when did that go out the door?"
"We are friendly sweetheart, but we are just looking out for your best interest. You are my little chubby cheeks after all," she said.
"Don't," I said as I walked away from my mother. She looked at me, hurt. "Doing this isn't going to change my feelings for her or the fact that she's pregnant. This isn't going to go away and neither is she. She's going to be my wife and I need you guys to support me, to support us," I said and looked between my parents. "I love her and this is what I want. She makes me happier than any other person I've ever been with before and I want to marry her."
"Have you proposed?" my father asked.
"Not yet," I said. "But in a way I did when she told me she was pregnant but she refused. She's a traditional girl who believes marriage is a life binding experience. Once she's married, she's in it for life," I explained. My father nodded. My mother looked at me with sadness in her eyes.
"My baby's in love," she said. "And my baby's having a baby," she said as tears began falling from her face. I walked over and wrapped my arms around her as she pulled me closer to her. "My baby's all grown up and is a man now." I stroked my mother's hair lightly.
"But I'll always love you mom," I said softly. "Just think…you're going to have a grandchild to love." She looked up at me.
"When is she due?"
"November seventeenth," I said. "It's June now so she's got another five months to go."
"Good morning everyone," Hannah said coming into the kitchen. She saw my mother's tears and gave me a look.
"Mom?" she asked cautiously.
"Isn't it wonderful sweetheart? Lauri's having a child," my mother said. Hannah looked at my father and he shrugged.
"I think we're going to be okay," I said and sighed in relief. Finally I was back on course again.
It was night and I led you through the wooded area to a secluded place I had found when I was a young boy. There I had set up a blanket, glasses, and wine for us. Taking your hand I led you to the blanket and held your hand firmly in mine as I lowered you to its warmth.
"Such the gentleman," you said as I took a seat beside you.
As the sky began to light up in various colors, you looked up and watched with intensity.
"I've never in my life seen something as beautiful as this," you said. "What is it?"
"It's the Northern Lights," I said taking your hand bringing it to my lips. "I use to come here with the guys. I also use to come here to get inspiration for my songs," I said. "It's peaceful out here and it’s a magnificent show." I took a sip of my wine. "Lean on me. Enjoy the show," I said and pulled you to lean on my shoulder. I wrapped my arm around your waist. "You cold?" I asked as I felt you shiver.
"No," you said. "I just…I never thought I'd be here, with you, watching the Northern Lights wrapped in your arms," you confessed. "It's so perfect and the moment is just so romantic," you said as I squeezed you. It was my turn to shiver. "You okay?"
"I'm fine," I said as I glanced down at you in my arms and offered you a smile. But on the inside I was dying with anticipation. When would be the perfect moment?
My answer came when a huge green light expanded over the horizon lighting up the trees and sky. Soon after a pink and purple light shown and it was like fireworks in the distance.
"I have something to tell you," I said. By the tone in my voice I think you grew concerned because you pulled your body away from mine and looked at me.
"Is everything okay?" you asked. I could detect worry. I took your hands. A bright blue light shown behind you.
"It's okay," I said softly. "But seriously, I don't want you to freak out or run away from me," I said and touched your face, trailing my fingers over your cheek. "But I think now is the perfect time to tell you that…" I said looking into your eyes. With the lights glowing behind you, with you being pregnant with my baby, and just being you made me realize that I could do this; that I could love you for the rest of my life. "Sky I love you," I said laying your fears to rest. Your face warmed a bit and I could see the beginning of tears forming. "And I know you said that it would mean forever but I want you to know that I feel the same way that you do. It is forever and I couldn’t think of any other woman I'd rather be with than you. You've opened my eyes so much and you're making me into a better man. I mean look at me! I don't smoke and drink nearly as much as I did before I met you. The point is that I feel like I'm a better person when I'm with you and I don't want you to be alone ever again. I fell in love with you the minute I saw you from the stage but after we made love – and yes I believe it was making love – I fell in love with you even more. I want to share my life with you just as I want you to share your life with me. We can do this, Sky. I've got a lot of things figured out already and if you believe in me, in us, I could make you happy. I can love you the way you want to be loved and I'll help take care of our child. We'll do it together; we'll do everything together from now until the day we die," I said and breathed in deeply. It was now or never. The tears were flowing freely down your creamy face and wiped them away with my thumb. I stood up pulling your hand to stand with me. "I love you Skylar and I want to have you all to myself forever," I said as I nervously bit my lip. Another green light flashed behind you. Holding your left hand I lowered myself to the earth on one knee. Looking into your eyes I pulled out the velvet box I had stuffed in my pocket. "I choose you as my partner, to be my wife. Sky – will you marry me?" And I opened the box to reveal your gift, my token of my undying love. You looked at me and then at the jewel tucked safely in the velvet.
"Do you know how long I've waited to hear you say those words?" you asked as you stared down at me. "For so long it hurts," you said and sniffed.
"Is that a yes?" I asked hopeful. "It's up to you now, Sky. I've told you how I feel and if…" you stopped me by lowering your face to mine in a passionate kiss.
"I love you," you breathed pulling your face inches away from mine holding my face in your hands. "It would be an honor to be Mrs. Lauri Johannes Ylonen," you said and giggled. "God I hope I pronounced that right," you said and I chuckled at you.
"You said it good," I said and held out the box to you. "Well my lady, what do you say?"
"Let me think about it…" you said and placed a finger to your chin, thinking. "Yes," you said softly.
"What?" I asked looking up at you in bewilderment.
"Yes," you said a little louder. I gasped. I needed to hear you say it again.
"Say it again," I said.
"YES!" you screamed. I lifted myself from the ground, picked you up into my arms and spun you around in circles. As I felt your legs wrap around my waist I kissed you, holding my hands in your hair.
"I love you so much," I said as you held my face in your hands pulling away from me slightly.
"I love you more," you said as I put your feet back to the earth.
"I highly doubt that," I said and took the ring out of the box, lifting your left ring finger to me. "This is for you to always remind yourself that I'm never far from your heart. When you look at it, I want you to think of the love we've created; the one inside of you right now, and the external love between the two of us. These are the beginning to a new life and even though it may be rough sometimes, just know that together we'll make it through and we'll still love each other. I promise you forever if you promise me forever," I said and slid the ring onto your finger. You glanced at the diamond and then back at me.
"Forever," you said with a smile.
