Mikey opened his eyes slowly. The faint outline of a person came into fuzzy focus as sleep left his mind. He smiled a contented smile and placed a kiss on a sleeping Gerard’s lips. Gerard stirred, but did not wake, his eyes fluttering beneath his eyelids. Mikey ran his long fingers through Gerard’s hair a few times, before sighing and turning over to get his glasses.
Mikey shouted. Well, screamed to be exact. When really frightened he seemed to just make this noise… some uncontrollable part of his brain would trigger and the high pitched noise would squeeze past his throat as he tried to suppress it and exit his mouth. Loudly.
Quinn, Frank and Bert were mere inches from his face. A manic grin plastered across that of Quinn and Bert, and a slight look of confusion tainting Frank’s otherwise similar grin. All three were sat cross-legged on the floor, knees touching. Mikey could only guess how long they had been sat there; in silence, waiting, wordlessly. To be totally honest: it freaked Mikey out. It reminded him of his childhood fears. When he would lie in bed at night, scared of seeing things. So he would shut his eyes, only to have fears that when he opened them a face would be inches from his own, grinning in much the same manner as he was seeing now.
He shied backwards, only to jump out of his skin when he came into contact with warm movement. “Jesus fucking Christ, Gee. What the fuck was that for?” Mikey shouted, annoyed that he had nearly had two heart attacks in the space of less than minute.
Gerard smothered a smile unsuccessfully as the uninvited trio rolled around, clutching their sides. He raked his fingers through his hair, yawning loudly. “What are you guys doing here?” He asked; voice heavy with sleep, rubbing his eyes, trying to get them to stop stinging. He hated mornings. It was the time of day when you had to have motivation and reason, the time of day when everything is clear and simple. Gerard hated that. He liked complexity, and the unknown, the rush of adrenaline as fear spiked your senses.
It was Bert who had replied. “We’re leaving. We got to be on the road in about an hour, and we have a lot to do.”
Gerard sat up and got out of bed, leaving Mikey lying in bed. Once Gerard stood up, his boxers riding low on his hips; Bert took his hand and pulled him through the apartment out into the hall. Frankie had given Bert a hoodie of Gerard’s as well as a pair of his jeans, which, once in the hall way, Gerard started quickly pulling the warm material over his head. Once Gerard was dressed, Bert pulled him through the hotel and out to the risk air of the morning. The sun was high in the sky, and a soft breeze whisked Bert’s hair around his head.
Bert found Gerard’s hand and laced their fingers together and started a slow pace across the car park and down the high street. Despite the time, there were groups of people ambling by, hoping to see a bargain. Gerard loved being in a place where he was known to so few people. It gave him the chance to feel normal again. Like a regular person with no obligation to his fans, nothing he felt he had to give. He could be his old self, before he became famous. It was something revered and he appreciated it as much as he could.
“I like you.”
Gerard stopped, Bert stopping a few steps before him. Bert kept his head facing the ground and his fingers laced between Gerard’s. “I like you too, Bert.” Gerard grinned and continued walking, pulling Bert as he slowed behind him.
“No, I like you. I’ve never spent so long with someone I’ve been so attracted to and not shagged them and left.” Bert said, his voice wavering slightly. “With you I feel okay just hanging around, seeing you, you know, being all that mushy romantic crap.”
Gerard smiled. “I know. I like you too, Bert. But you have to realise I cannot be faithful to you and you alone. I cannot be a one man guy. I know it sounds selfish and such, but I have Frank and you know, Mikey.” They had stopped walking, and found themselves outside the coffee house which they had met in. Gerard smiled again, before leading Bert into Tchibo’s.
*~*~*
Gerard, Mikey and Frank sat warming their toes on the draft of hot air wafting under their table. The restaurant was dark and musky, the dusty lamps making the air difficult to breathe. It was Frank who had decided to eat in the restaurant. Mikey had grinned and agreed. Gerard was just happy to have both Frank and Mikey still talking to him.
If he ever tried to remember how his life had become as it was, Gerard’s mind would become a blur. Sometimes it annoyed him, the fact that he had no recollection of the most amazing moment when Frank, Mikey and himself decided that they could join together and be more than just friends; that they could be lovers . Very few people in the world could say that they did as much: receiving and giving love equally to more than one lover. It was this Gerard was thinking of as he sipped his coffee, the aroma reminding him of that warm place in his heart which made him feel so comfortable.
Mikey and Frank were talking quietly about when they had first decided to create the band; both their faces lighting up animatedly as they spoke and remembered. Gerard watched the white bandages on Mikey’s hands as he moved them around.
Every story needs a twist, and that was Mikey’s. The unlimited love Mikey received from those all around him, including the partners Gerard and the rest of the band had never met, would never be enough to ease Mikey’s hurt. It was an emotion hard-wired into both brothers, maybe Gerard coped a little better with it, as he had never felt the need to cut himself, nor scar himself in any physical sense. It was at that moment that the lights went out.
That moment of quiet reminiscence had been cut short as Gerard looked around in panic, trying to see something. He remembered hearing Mikey say his name as an icy fist reached into his chest and twisted its grip around Gerard’s heart. Panic continued to rise from his stomach as his breath quickened. Gerard shut his eyelids and covered his ears. The sounds of Frank and Mikey’s voice still talking seemed to fade away, as if Gerard himself were moving away from them. Leaving everything behind…
