On the exact stroke of 10 a.m. the next morning Stefan was ringing the bell at
Sir Ian’s East end flat. The door was opened almost immediately and Ian smiled warmly at him. This time he was dressed less formally in grey woollen pants and a black turtleneck.
“Come in, come in,” he encouraged the boy and as soon as the door was closed behind them embraced him in greeting, once again planting fleeting kisses on his cheeks Stefan smiled at the older man.
“Thanks that you agreed to meet me. It’s very kind of you.”
“Well, I must admit I was curious to find out what made you ask for a meeting with an old chap like myself. Neil made it sound quite urgent. But let me take your jacket first and then follow me into the kitchen. Breakfast is ready.”
Stefan did as he was told and was once again amazed by the splendour surrounding him. The flat seem to be huge. He saw at least five doors leading away from the hallway into spacious rooms. Stefan just caught glimpses of what seemed to be a living room, sitting room and possible a guest room. The interior could be best described as classic English country design and even though it all seemed fairly
old-fashioned as well, it lacked the museum style of Neil’s flat.
They sat down at opposite sides of the kitchen table, which was crammed with plates of cheese, a basket full of rolls and French croissants, jam and marmalade, yoghurt, milk and muesli. Oh, and a bowl of fruits. Ian poured them both a cup of tea and then looked inquiringly at the boy.
“Not that I mind having a guest for breakfast but please tell me what you so urgently wanted to discuss with me.”
“I know it’s a bit strange. I mean, I just met you once and you don’t really know me…” Stefan stammered. Ian smiled again.
“I’m not angry with you. I just want to know. Neil did not say much.”
“I didn’t tell him why I wanted to talk to you, I just asked him to ask you,” Stefan explained. “I need some advice and I already asked Kevin about it and it was a disaster.”
Stefan then told his story again, starting with what had happened after Neil and him had left Ian’s birthday party, ending with Kevin’s suggestion to watch some blue movies for education.
When the boy had ended, Ian buried his face in his hands and did not say anything for a while. Stefan just saw the older man’s shoulders moving up and down and wondered what was going on. It almost looked as if Ian was crying but Stefan could not think of anything he had said that could have upset the actor that much. Then Ian looked up at him, wiping at tears and laughing silently. Stefan grinned, feeling relieved and suddenly seeing how silly it all must sound.
Ian giggled, helplessly trying to catch his breath again. When he finally succeeded he sipped his tea and then regarded the boy again.
“I’m sorry; I didn’t want to make fun of you. This Kevin just seems to be so…
So impossible!”
Stefan laughed as well. “Yes, he is sometimes but he’s my best friend here. But now you know why I wanted to talk to you. I don’t want Neil to think I’m stupid and I don’t really want to talk to Chris about it. He’s Neil’s best friend and I would feel silly. And I don’t know anybody else here and you were so nice to me on your party…”
“Hmm, I see,” Ian nodded. “Please, eat some more.”
“No, thanks. I can’t eat more than two rolls, I’m so full now,” Stefan declined.
Ian poured himself another cup of tea and held it in both hands, watching the steam rise for a few moments.
“If I were you, I would talk to Neil about it. Tell him that you are afraid to do something wrong.”
Stefan looked at the older man with a mixture of surprise and reluctance.
“But that’s too embarrassing!” he protested.
“Why would it?” Ian smiled reassuringly. “If he loves you he will surely understand that you are confused. It’s only natural, you are young, he is so much older than you and you never had a boyfriend before. Explain it to him. Take your time, it will all work out. Despite of what your dear friend Kevin said, there is more to gay relationships than sex.” He winked as he saw the boy blush slightly once again. “Much more.”
