Chapter ten: A Shift of Perspective.
Maddie and Aly both rolled their eyes as Pete gave them the rules about leaving the house for the 6th time today. Although it was understandable for Pete to be nervous about Hannah, Maddie thought he was going a little over board with the whole always take three body guards with you, it’s actually quite annoying.
“Pete, were just going to get Aly a hair cut, her body guards is going, everything is going to be ok.” Pete looked unsure as Maddie tried to reassure him.
“You know what? The guys don’t need me today; I think I’ll just tag along. Ya know like extra security.”
As he ran upstairs for his jacket, Maddie and Aly both let out a frustrated whine. It had been happening all week, Pete deciding that the guys would be ok without him and then tagging along on every outing that Maddie and Aly went on. At one point when they had decided to stay home on Wednesday, he still didn’t leave. He asked the guys to come over and work in his in home studio. Falling for him was frustrating enough for Maddie when he wasn’t around but when he was round “accidentally” brushing her hand with his, constantly looking at her and touching her, and then yesterday when he actually wrapped his arms around her waist for no reason, just holding her in his arms breathing her in. Although the best thing about him constantly being around was he never brought Danielle, whether it was because he didn’t want her their or because Aly didn’t want her there, let’s just say Danielle had barely been around at all in the last week.
“Maddie, you told me you were going to make daddy stop. I mean I love him and I know he’s just trying to do what’s best for me or whatever but this has got to stop.” Maddie laughed as Aly made her frustrated face. “Go talk to him, he’s alone upstairs right now and then we can go by ourselves and have more fun without him because he can be such a sour sport.” The idea of going upstairs and talking to Pete alone in his bedroom was daunting; especially since the last time they were in a bedroom together it didn’t end so well, Maddie suddenly felt an elbow nudging her and little voice telling her to go.
Walking upstairs felt like she was walking to the gallows, being alone with Pete was hard for Maddie, harder then she ever thought it would be. Does that mean I’m in love with him? Maddie tried to erase that thought from her mind as she knocked on his bedroom door.
“Hey, sorry I was just changing my shirt,” Pete answered as he pulled his shirt on, he smirked at the way Maddie eyes traveled down his chest landing on the tattoo that was just above his pant line. “Maddie? Was there something you wanted or…?”
Maddie stood for a moment unable to form a coherent sentence and blurted the words out before she could think them all the way through, “Aly and I were talking and we think that you should go to the studio with Patrick today.” Maddie cringed at how lame that sounded and at the slightly offended look on Pete’s face. Sighing she tried again, “Look that came out wrong, Pete, Aly and I both know that we have to be careful, we also know that your just trying to protect her but,” she grabbed his hands which made him look at her, “your driving us insane.” Maddie offered a smile and a chuckle to show him that insane wasn’t meant rudely. “I promise you that we’ll be ok,” she took out her cell phone to show him, “Look I have my cell phone and it’s on, Aly will have hers also. I’m going to get her hair cut and then take her to get something to eat. We will be back by 7:30, alrighty?” Maddie raised both of her eyebrows hoping that his answer will be a positive one.
Nodding his head he answered, “Go before I change my mind.”

Maddie knew she was in trouble. It was almost 8:15, her phone had died and Aly’s, well Aly conveniently forgot to tell her that she left it on the kitchen counter at the house, so Maddie was in trouble. She had talked to Pete at 6 and said that they would be home on time, what she hadn’t accounted for was Trista and Brylee joining her for dinner. The three girls together made it nearly impossible for Maddie and Aly to get out of the restaurant on time. Pulling up to the huge house she saw almost every light on, and one very angry man standing in the door way. Aly had fallen asleep on the ride home so Maddie carried her to the doorstep where Pete removed her from Maddie’s arms and made his way up the stairs. Maddie followed, she had a bag of stuff she brought with her that she needed, instead of going to Aly’s room she turned to the gold and red room. Grabbing her bag and walking out into the hallway she saw Aly’s door closed and Pete’s open. Biting her lip and going against her judgment she walked towards said door.
Knocking she called out his name, “Pete?” not hearing a response she turned to walk away but instead of walking back down the hallway she walked into a chest, her mouth opened to scream but a hand had already cover it.
“Calm down, Maddie.” Maddie visible relaxed at the sound of his soft albeit rude voice. Before she could apologize he was speaking again, “I’m so tired of worrying about you and her. It’s frustrating, I feel like you deliberately do the opposite of what you tell me you’re going to do.” He had walked into his room and was sitting on his bed rubbing his face.
“It’s not like that Pete. We went to dinner and my friends decided to join us, the four of us were just talking and I lost track of time. My phone had died and Aly conveniently forgot hers here. By time we got out of there it was 7:45 and we were a half hour away.” She kept her voice quiet and soft, trying not to piss him off more. “I don’t deliberately try to piss you off. It just happens.”
“That’s the problem, every time it happens the more I doubt you. Tonight I felt like you meant to do this, Maddie. Like you were trying to punish me for what has happened between us, the tension and the kiss. The last month has been hell with you, constantly being around each other, all I’ve wanted to do is touch you.” Pete’s voice was raising of its own accord and Maddie couldn’t help flinching at the sound of it. “Then something like this happens and the only thing I can think is that you want me to worry, you want me to…”
“Punish you? Me punish you? You have to be kidding. If any one in the last month has been punishing anyone here then it was you to me.” Maddie was pissed she couldn’t believe the things he was saying. “You kissed me and the next day you and your girlfriend were parading around in your underwear. You made me have these feelings for you and now you’re trying to blame it on me? You were the one that came home drunk, you were the one that pressed me against the counter and you were the one that left, not me. Then you kissed me and pretended like nothing happened. I’m sorry Pete but you’re not that good of an actor you know just as well as I do that that stupid kiss hasn’t left your mind since it happened. Right now I can’t keep doing this; I can’t keep acting like nothing affects me.” Maddie turned to leave the room but Pete grabbed her wrist twirling her around to face him. Before Maddie could think Pete had his lips on hers, her body pressed against the wall next to the door and some how her legs had found there way around his waist. Maddie knew this was crazy, that she should regain control of the situation and leave before it went too far but by this point she could care less about what she should do and was focusing on what she wanted to be doing.
Pete couldn’t stop himself from kissing her; he had been trying to control the emotions he was having for her but seeing her fight back, telling him all the same things that he had been trying to ignore broke that control. He couldn’t let her leave until he had tasted her again, reaching over to his right he shut the door to his bedroom and locked it, just in case. He didn’t know exactly how far they would be going but he didn’t know how slow they would be going either so he took the precaution of locking his door for his daughter’s sake. He felt Maddie pull back and turned his full attention back on her.
“Oh god what are we doing Pete?” She had leaned her head back against the wall giving him full access to her neck giving him an opportunity he was more than willing to take.
“I think we were kissing,” He emphasized every word with a kiss making his way down her neck, stopping and sucking slightly where her shoulder and neck met. He smirked as he heard her moan, making his way back up her neck to right below her ear he flicked his tongue out, “What did you think we were doing?”
Maddie could hear the smirk he had on his face in his words and his arrogance only turned her on more. “Making our situation even more difficult.”
Pete’s laugh was slightly huskier then usually, “Do you want me to stop?” He pulled his head away from her neck and smiled as she moaned in displeasure. “I’ll take that as a no.” Putting his arms around her waist after making sure her legs were secure around his own he lifted her to his bed, laying her down he looked at her. “Maddie, do you want me to stop, you have to tell me now because I don’t think I’ll be able to stop if we keep going.”
“Pete, stopping is the last thing on my mind right now.” Maddie pulled his face back to hers capturing him in another mind blowing kiss, barely separating so Pete could remove Maddie’s tank top going on to unbutton her jeans leaving her feeling very naked compared to Pete.
“I think you’re a little overdressed for this party.” Maddie removed his shirt with ease but as she tried to unbutton his jeans her hands shook. That’s when he took control and stayed in control for the rest of the night.

Maddie lay in bed with her eyes open staring at her ceiling, the sun had been up for at least two hours and she couldn’t stop thinking about last week waking up in Pete’s bed unsure if it had really happened. She had been avoiding her friends, knowing they could spot her infidelity a mile away. That and she didn’t know what Pete told the guys or if he had and since Trista and Gabe were some kind of item she figured that Trista had to know something. Every day since she had sex with Pete she had gotten up early and left the house before her friends could corner her, granted it’s only been a week. I can’t get away from them today, last night Pete gave Maddie Saturday, which is today, off and since she didn’t usually have Saturdays off she was unsure of what to do all day. It had been awkward the morning after but both had decided that they were adults and they needed to act accordingly. Maddie still didn’t know how well that was working, all she wanted to do is be around him and he gave her a day off shaking her head she swung her legs over the side of her bed. What I do know is that I need some freaking coffee. Listening harder she could hear her friends in the living room; neither had knocked at her door yet. They probably don’t realize I’m still home. Getting up she figured it was now or never and she knew with her friends never wasn’t an option.
“Speak of the Devil.” Trista smirked as Maddie walked out and rolled her eyes, “We were just wondering where you’ve been all week, getting home late and leaving early. I was telling Bry here that I thought you might have your self a guy.” Shit she knows, Maddie raised an eyebrow; I wonder how much she knows.
“Me have a guy? Seriously? I have no guy, I’ve just been staying late with Aly making sure she’s in bed, Pete’s also been getting home late and I can’t very well leave her alone can I?” Maddie tried to pull it off but she knew that they weren’t buying it.
“So you were tending to Aly’s needs? or could it be that you were tending Pete’s needs ya know under the covers and in the dark?” Brylee couldn’t keep the comment back nor could she hide the tears of laughter that filled her eyes as Maddie spit out the water that she had just taken a sip of aiming for the sink but hitting the fridge instead.
“What does that mean?” Trying to recover from her obvious spit admittal; she turned her face away from them walking over and wiping off the side of the fridge.
“oh come on, you knew that he was going to tell someone and someone was going to tell Gabe who assumed I already knew and then tried to take it all back but I know better, I know you and it makes sense that your avoiding us because you did something that you shouldn’t have; like I don’t know have sex with your boss.” Trista confirmed all of Maddie’s suspicions, of course Pete told someone.
“Ok, we had sex that’s it.” Maddie made a break for the door trying to get back to her bedroom but Brylee was in her way; she was corned.
“Well Gabe said something about it being hot wild and crazy so you wanna fill in the blanks?”
“Hot, wild and crazy? You’re joking right?” Trista shook her head no, “it was hot I guess I mean well he was hot, not so wild and crazy though. It was sweet and mind blowing.” Maddie’s face got a dreamy look to it. “Ok I’m done talking about having sex with Pete and on to whether you guys wanna go to get a massage with me in an hour?” At the confirmed nods of her two best friends she picked up her phone and called to make appointments.

Pete had given Maddie the day off, he wanted to spend more alone time with Aly and that’s precisely what he did. They spent the morning eating breakfast on the couch watching a movie, then both showering and heading to the park for just a little bit of normalcy.
They had been at the park for a little over an hour and Aly showed no signs of fatigue where as Pete could barely move from being completely and utterly tired. He tried to ignore the phone that had been ringing Danielle’s ring tone for the last two hours but at this point he was so annoyed and pissed that he answered.
“Danielle, I need you to just leave me alone for a little bit. I’m trying to spend sometime with my daughter and I’m asking you to give me some space; actually I’m kind of demanding some space; from us, from our relationship.”
“Pete, are you breaking up with me? Because if so I think that you should reconsider your decision, I think that we should at least talk in person.”
“Fine, Monday, come over and we’ll go out for lunch and talk but I don’t think anything you could say would change how I feel.”
“Please, just give me a chance. I just want to talk to you, maybe we can reconnect.”
Shaking his head, “I said fine Danielle, that we could talk but now I wanna go play with my daughter a little bit more.” He hung up before she could respond turning back around to see if Aly was hungry but she was no longer on the swing. He looked around almost frantically and didn’t see her anywhere. Oh god baby where are you. He ran around calling her name he ran towards the woods, turned back towards the play ground that’s when he saw them, her flip flops, the ones she took off so that she could squish her toes into the sand. He called the first person he could think of, Patrick.
“Patrick, I can’t find Aly. No I’m serious, I took her to the park and we were swinging. Yea I know me on a swing, shut up, Patrick seriously. I turned around for one second and now she’s gone. I looked in the woods and but her flip flops are still here. Sitting where she took them off, the only thing I can think is Hannah came back and took her.” Pete faintly heard Patrick tell him not to move that they were on there way as he hung up. He sat down with his face in his hands and that’s when his tears came, and once they started he couldn’t make them stop.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
It had been a couple of hours since Aly went missing, Pete was going out of his mind, he had gotten into a huge fight with one of the guys down at the cop station, they told him that they would do what they could by putting out an Amber Alert and sending some men down to the woods but Pete knew that they weren’t going to find anything. He had tried to tell them about Hannah but they were reluctant to believe him, especially since he hadn’t reported the abuse in the first place. He knew he was missing something or he was forgetting to call someone but he had talked to all of the essential people in Aly’s life well he had thought he talked to all of them until Maddie walked through the front door.
“Pete, what’s going on? Why are there so many cars here? And the police car in the driveway?” Maddie was staring at all the people walking around but didn’t see the little girl she had come to see, “where’s Aly?”
“Oh, god Maddie I forgot to call you. She’s been missing for four hours and I’ve been losing my mind. The cops are no help and I don’t know what to do.” Maddie wrapped her arms around him pulling him close to her, she could tell he was going to lose it at any moment; she led him away from the people that seemed to just be staring at him and into the family room that no one ever entered closing the door behind her. She let him cry, cry until his body shook and did her best to calm him down. Rubbing his back, whispering in his ear and letting him cry were the only things that she could think of but it apparently worked. He calmed down after ten minutes and took a deep breathe relaying the whole story to Maddie making sure that he doesn’t miss a thing. After the story was over Maddie smiled at Pete.
“Everything is going to be ok.” Pete’s head was down, “Peter look at me.” As he raised his head she kept talking, “Everything is going to be ok. She is going to be back here and in your arms before you know it. I’m going to be here until she gets home, I promise you, I’ll hold your hand from here on out.” She grabbed his hand and kissed the back of it bringing a watery smile to his face. All Maddie truly wanted to do right now was cry, I can’t keep doing this. Before she could say anything else the door to the room flew open and Patrick and Andy fell through slamming the door behind them.
“Hey man sorry to um interrupt,” Andy stumbled over the words as Maddie smile, this is the first time I’ve really heard him talk, he continued “but we just wanted to make sure everything was ok, you disappeared for a good half hour and we didn’t know if you were alone. We didn’t want you to be alone dealing with this.”
“But uh we see now that you’re not alone, that you’re in perfectly capable hands.” Patrick saw Maddie raise her eyebrow at his comment, “So we’ll leave you to it.” If he doesn’t get rid of Danielle after all this with Maddie then he seriously has some kind of psychological problems. Patrick thought as he saw Maddie stand removing her self from being so close to Pete; her temptation.
“No, I need to call my mom. I have to tell her what’s going on.” Wiped his face with the back of his right hand, as he went to stand he felt Maddie start to take her hand away but he wasn’t willing to let their connection brake yet he squeezed her hand and held on a little tighter; a small smile came across his face when he felt her squeeze back.
