Persephone groaned in her sleep as someone kissed her forehead softly. “Go away, Mikey. I don’t want to play.” She heard a masculine laugh that was too old to be the Mikey of her dreams and opened her eyes to see the older version of that Mikey in front of her.
“Oh, but, Persy, I think you would want to play the game we’re about to play. It’s called ‘Cure the Vampires’, and we’re only waiting for you.” He laughed again as she jumped up, looking around.
She was on the couch in the lab break room. She could vaguely remember coming in here with Bob to get some rest, he had left shortly after with a vow to send someone to wake her up. She sighed and made sure all her weapons were in place and smiled at her brother. “Well then let’s go play.”
She followed him out of the labs into the main lobby where all the hunters were assembled. They had their own small army of the most ruthless and dangerous hunters in the world there. The thought brought a smile to her face, especially when some of those who had just arrived from out of town pointed their weapons at her only to be shushed by those in her firm.
“I guess this means we all ready to hunt us some vampires, doesn’t it?” Hoots and calls of ‘hell yes’ rang out through the huge atrium. She smiled and raised her hand, getting a scream that made the walls shake. “Let’s go get them!”
Everyone moved toward the door in a massive wave of bodies, though no one had ever heard of Contract Valley, let alone knew where it was. She was there for that reason. So she slipped, with Mikey close behind her, toward her car, finding Frank, Bob, and Nia waiting there for her, all of them looking like a bad sci-fi movie in their black leather and weapons.
She smiled and tossed the keys to Bob, sliding into the passenger seat. She didn’t know if driving would be such a good thing for her, so she would play look out. Making sure that all those who were following them were in cars and ready to go. “Here we go, guys.”
“For Gee and Ray!” Mikey sounded scared, happy, sad, and nervous all at the same time with those words, but everyone else in the car, save Nia, repeated the words.
“For Gee and Ray!”
Silence filled the car for the hour and a half trip to the small town. No one wanted to talk, no one even thought to talk. It was as if they were all preparing themselves for the things they knew that they were about to do. With Contract Valley coming into view, Persephone wasn’t too sure any of them were really prepared yet.
Sliding out of the car, she heard the crush of boots on gravel behind her and knew that the others were moving towards her. She pulled a gun out of the glove compartment and popped the clip out, replacing it with a clip of darts. Sighing, she gestured in one direction. “You know your teams. Team A, start with the south end. Search every inch of every building, avoiding the high school. Team B, same thing but starting north. Team C and D, you’ll be with me going through the center of town. Everyone meet at the high school when done. Radio if you find something.”
She heard the grunts of approval as everyone started to separate. Her heart was pounding louder than it had ever pounded and she was very aware of the sound of those around her as they moved. Her heart stopped and she sighed, knowing that it was bound to happen. As long as she was still breathing, she would be ok.
She stopped when she realized why her heart had stopped breathing. “The county line.”
“What, Persy?”
“I stepped over the county line, Mikey.”
“So? What’s the big deal? I did too.” Mikey looked around at the group, confused. Persephone looked at Bob and he nodded, knowing what she was saying. She shook her head at her brother and just kept moving through the town, going in and out of buildings checking for any signs of movement.
Twenty minutes before the sunset, they all managed to hunker down behind a fallen school bus in front of the high school. One team was on the back side of the school, two on either side, and then there was the group at the front.
Persephone was at the forefront of the group in front of the high school, already feeling the effects the setting sun in Contract Valley was having on her breathing. She sighed and turned to the group behind her. “This is it, guys. The moment that determines all our fates. If we cure them all, those who lived in Contract Valley can return and rebuild the homes they had loved as children. I would love to do that. I want to be buried in the church cemetery like my family has been for generations.” She paused, catching her breath. “We’re not all going to make it back from this, but for those of us who do, we’ll be heroes. I wish you all the best of luck.”
The speech had been broadcast over the radios and there were return calls about how she could be the hero. She shook her head and looked back at the distant horizon, watching the last bit of her humanity go down with the sun. She felt her eyes go a solid green, gold streaks glowing in the dark, and felt a hand on her arm.
Turning, she sighed at Bob’s worried look. “I’m fine. I’m just worried for the lives of those around me. I want as few casualties as possible tonight. If anyone is killed by those that are now vampires, let everyone know that it’s not really those people. I don’t want to think that that creature in there with Gerard’s face is really my brother. Don’t blame him for what he does, okay? I mean it. All of you. Promise me.”
She was so serious, that they all swore that they would blame none of those they cured for their previous actions. Deep down they all knew that she was preparing herself to die. They didn’t know why she thought it had to be her, but they all knew.
Bob and Mikey felt it greater than the others. Mikey hugged her quickly and kissed her on the cheek. “You’re the greatest little sister in the world, you know? I love you.”
“I love you too, Mikey. Don’t worry. Everything will be alright in the end. I promise.” She turned as she felt a tap on her shoulder. “Yes, Bobby?”
“I don’t want to lose you again.”
“You’re not, Bobby. Just trust that everything will work and it will.” She paused. “I lied when I found out you were alive. I’ve never stopped being madly in love with you. And I’ll always fall with your kiss.”
She took the kiss he offered and then pulled back as he shook his head. “You can’t, Persephone, you just can’t.”
“I can, and I will, Bobby. Just tell me you love me and get it over with.”
“I don’t want to make this sound like goodbye, Persy.”
“It’s not goodbye, honey. It’s you telling me how you really feel about me. I am as madly in love with you as I was the day we met.”
“I’ll always been madly in love with you, baby. I came back from the dead for you. That should be proof enough, but don’t make me think this is the last time we’ll be together.”
She kissed him again and stood as the sun finally set behind the high school. “I love you, Bobby, Mikey, and even you, Frankie. Be safe.”
She jumped over the bus in a single leap and was the first to see the stream of vampires and demons as they started to stroll out of the high school, not knowing that anyone was there. She dropped her gun behind her beside Bob and took off her holster, dropping those guns beside him too. She looked behind her and whispered over her shoulder, knowing at least Bob, Mikey, and Frank would hear her. “Save me.” She turned back to the high school, knowing what she had to do. “GERARD!!!!”
The vampires and demons stopped where they were looking at her. She jumped off the front of the bus and moved toward the high school, fire bursting out of the ground where she walked, objects flying around her head. She knew that most of it wasn’t the vampire abilities but her, yet it was bound to scare those in front of her.
She heard a snicker from behind the vampires and they moved to clear the way for her eldest brother and best friend. Black hair falling in his eyes making the hazel and gold of his eyes more brilliant that she had ever seen them, he appeared more sinister than she remembered from a few days previous.
“So you have returned, Persephone. Alone? What chance do you have against my army if you are by yourself? Though I see you have learned some new tricks in the two days you’ve been away. And what’s this I see? Vampire features? Joining the dark side, are we? This isn’t all for your big brother is it?” He laughed and the vampires around him joined in.
“This is between me and you, Gerard. Only me and you.”
“Why, sister dearest? Why when I can merely send my vampires after you right now? You have no weapons to protect yourself so you would have no chance.”
“You think?” Persephone felt the smirk come across her face as she shook her head. “Poor Gerard. Even after all these years, you’ll still never learn. In strategy games, Mikey and I are the ones that dominate.”
“This is no game, Persephone. This is your fucking life. What are you doing on about games for?”
“Oh, but, Gerard, my dear brother, this is a game. It’s called ‘Persephone Wins’. Do you know what the one rule of this game is?” She paused and smiled. “I always win. NOW!!!”
Gunshots went off and several of the vampires on either side of Gerard and Ray were hit, writhing on the ground as they vampirism was miraculously cured. Rick really had done a good job with that quick acting stuff, though Gerard and Ray didn’t seem too thrilled.
“You bitch! Those are my demons! I worked really hard to earn them!”
Ray moved to attack Persephone but was thrown back into the crowd of vampires and demons by a small dragon. The dragon turned to Frank and he shook his head. “No, Ray, this is between Persephone and Gerard. If you want to fight, you’ll have to deal with me and Mikey.”
Persephone glanced over her shoulder and found Mikey shifting on all fours, growling at the demon that had been his friend in front of him. She couldn’t see Bob anywhere, but there was fighting going on in the back of the school and gunshots were ringing out everywhere. She caught sight of Nia’s long dark locks, but lost her again in the crowd. Everyone was occupied but her and Gerard.
“Looks like it’s just me and you, Gerard. How are you going to play this?”
“Quite simply, Persephone. Like this …” He kicked her in the chest and she went flying through the air. She hit the bus and got up as he got to her, punching her in the face. “You will never learn.” A punch. “I am older.” Another punch. “I am better.” A kick to the stomach. “You’ve always been the weak one in the family.”
As he moved to kick her again, she grabbed his foot and spun him around, kneeing him in the face with his own momentum. “I am not weak.” She kicked him in the face as he faltered from the knee blow.
He stumbled, kicking up and hitting her in the knee. The brief moment of disorientation she had allowed him to get behind her and cut off the last of the air she had. If he didn’t let go of her, she was either going to turn or die. She wanted the latter.
“Tell them to back off, or you die.”
“No …”
“If there’s any love for me …”
“I love Gerard Arthur Way, not you. You are the creature that merely inhabits his body. In my opinion, he’s only lending you out for now. Not for long though.”
“Bitch.” Gerard snapped her neck just as a gunshot was heard in their direction. He jerked and fell to the ground, writhing beside her dying body. She smiled slightly at him as the light in her eyes began to fade. His completely human face was the last face she saw as her life ended.
