Chloe moved away from Brendon, knowing that there was a gun pointed at her back, and stood slowly. “Let’s not do anything rash.”
“You’re covered in blood and there’s a dead body by the elevators, I think you’ve gone beyond rash.” The voice sent a chill down Chloe’s back and she wanted more than anything to see the face that went with it. Her heart leapt at his next words. “Turn around, vampire.”
Chloe turned, almost in slow motion, to look at the man standing behind her. He was taller than Chloe was, but not quite six foot tall. He was unshaven and his dark brown hair hung in his eyes, giving him the illusion of a harmless homeless guy. The gun in his hand, however, ruined the illusion of harmless. He held the gun like it was an extra part of his body.
With all this, it was his eyes that truly frightened Chloe. They were a solid chocolate brown and would have been soft enough, had there not been no emotion in them. Something slid through his eyes that caused Chloe to shutter harder and wonder why no one else had said anything yet.
“There are none human in this room. How could you all have allowed her to kill him?” His voice burned with the lack of emotion and the weight of the danger that lied beneath the calm words. Chloe was about to melt and didn’t know how he could have such a reaction on her. He seemed to be killing her with nothing but his voice and a look.
Apparently everyone was as shocked as Chloe was when Naida spoke up, her calm filling the room and easing Chloe’s tension. “She is Chloe Bryar, head of Bryar Enterprises. He attacked her cousin and her best friend. She was merely keeping him from killing those she loves.”
“Where’s Bill? I won’t believe it until I hear it from him.”
“It’s true.” Ray stepped up from beside Nia and shook his head, his own gun hidden by his side. “I’m Ray Toro, her uncle. She was merely keeping Alex and Brendon safe. It is who she is. She would not harm someone just for fun. She only harms when those she loves are in danger.” Everyone else in the room nodded in agreement at Ray’s words, but still the young man’s gun did not waver. “Who are you, son?”
“Jon Walker, the last of the born Slayers, now bounty hunter.”
Chloe heart soared and then crashed and burned at the thought that her supposed savior was holding a gun on her. Where was Bill when she needed him? “Brendon is my best friend, I could not harm him.”
“She’s telling the truth, Mr. Walker.” Brendon spoke weakly from the floor and movement from the corner made Jon’s gun move ever so slightly.
Naida ignored the gun now trained on her and went to her knees beside Brendon. She moved to lift the long white dress she was wearing up and Jon’s voice rose over the group. “Don’t do it, lady.”
Naida glared at him and lifted the dress anyway, pulling a vial out of a guarder on her thigh. She popped the cork and poured it onto Brendon’s wound. The entire time she did she was staring at Jon, daring him to shoot her. She was healer, and she wasn’t going to let a simple threat stop her from healing.
“I told you not to do that.”
“He was going to bleed to death if I didn’t do something.” Naida turned cold blue eyes to Jon and let him know that she wasn’t too happy with him right now. “Put the gun away, it’s pointless to keep it naked in your hand if you’re not going to shoot anyone.”
“How do you know I’m not going to shoot anyone?” Curiosity slipped through the hard shell that was Jon Walker’s normal reserve.
“It’s one of my gifts.” Naida turned back to work on Brendon, no longer worried about Jon Walker or the gun he now held loosely in his hands.
“Who are you? What are you?”
“Princess Naida Poole, mermaid and water nymph royalty. Your little gun doesn’t threaten me, and I have sworn to give my life to heal others. That’s what I’m doing. Put it away before someone else gets hurt.” Naida didn’t even look back as she introduced herself, having never been one to be impressed by brute force.
Chloe let out a breath as, due to Naida’s persistence and calming ability, Jon put the gun away, though he still looked tense. “Explain to me again why you killed that man, Ms. Bryar.”
“He attacked Brendon and Alex. I was just protecting them. He threw me into the elevator first and I was merely defending myself.”
“Jon! How good to see you here! What’s going on?” Bill came around the corner at that moment, though Naida had already saved Chloe. “Oh, shit, this is about Chloe killing that guy, right?” He frowned as he looked at Jon’s hands. “Where’s your gun? I figured you still have it trained on her.”
“He would had it not been for Naida.” Ray smiled from the back of the group beside Nia. “She seemed to calm everyone down when we were all about to go a little trigger happy.” He moved his arm back and showed the gun at his hip and the unbuttoned holster.
“Is this true, Naida?” Bill turned to Naida where she knelt on the floor. “Did you calm everyone down to keep others from harm?”
“Yes, Bill, as always. Why? Did I do something wrong?” Naida leaned back on her heels and looked up at Bill with concerned and fearful eyes.
Bill sighed and shook his head, walking over to Naida and giving her a brief hug. “No, no, honey. You did everything right. Perfect as a matter of fact. A lot of people could have possibly been harmed if you had not calmed them down.”
Naida nodded and turned back to Brendon but was stopped halfway around by Jon’s voice. “What did you do and why are you acting like it’s such a big deal? Like you don’t know what you did. Princess.”
Naida sighed and looked down at her hands. “This is my first day out of my cavern in nearly two years. I don’t know how much power I have so when I calm people, I’m not really sure if it will help or hurt others.”
Jon nodded, seeming to understand, and turned back to Chloe. “I am sorry for the misunderstanding, Ms. Bryar. I would like to join your group of hunters to see that those vampires who need to be put out of their misery are.”
“That’s nice to know, Mr. Walker. First off though, call me Chloe. I’m too young to be called Ms. Bryar.” Chloe stood and stretched a little, feeling the dried blood all down her front. She flinched and saw the acknowledgement on Jon’s face before she turned to Spencer. “I need to get upstairs and get this blood cleaned off. Will you and Bill be able to handle all this?”
“We got it, Chlo. Just go ahead. All we need to do is get Brendon to the infirmary, and with Naida’s help, I think he might be able to do that on his own.” Spencer told Chloe with his eyes that he knew she was nervous around the new guy. He nodded and turned back to Brendon.
“Fine. I’m going to get cleaned up. I will be back down in a while. Bill, take everyone into one of the inner offices and send someone to get me, okay?”
“Yes, ma’am.” Bill gave her a faux salute and a smile as she walked into the unbroken elevator, shaking her head. Today was going to be a hell of a day. It could only get better though, right? Surely there would be no more surprises. One could only hope.
