‘And so that’s how we… we… we lost the car…’ Miyavi said, scratching the back of his head nervously.
‘I don’t understand. So you needed to pee… so you got out of the car, then…’ Yoshiki turned his attention from Miyavi to Sugizo. ‘Then Sugi got out of the car… why?’
‘I… went to check on Miyavi, to see why he was taking so long!’ Sugizo said rather too quickly.
‘Whatever.’ Yoshiki sighed. ‘We’ll talk about this tomorrow at the studio. We should give Gackt a hand before Rei gets home.’ Yoshiki said, leaving the kitchen to join Gackt who was re-organising the lounge room to make it bigger (with the help of hired people of course, as if they’d do it themselves).
‘Yoshiki, can you keep an eye on the caterers please?’ Gackt saw Yoshiki come out of the kitchen, followed by Miyavi and Sugizo. ‘And Miyavi, could you check on the bar please? Sugizo could you wait outside, people should start arriving in a minute.’ Gackt smiled to the two.
The guests ranged from those signed to indies label to those signed to the big labels such as PSC and Nippon Crown.
Even those Gackt didn’t speak to, came along (invites were sent to record labels, not band themselves). Gackt saw Mana enter and panicked. He quickly searched out Yoshiki.
‘Yoshiki. We didn’t invite Moi Dix Mois did we?’ Gackt hid behind Yoshiki who stood around with Heath and Toshi, he didn’t want Mana to see him. In all honesty he really didn’t want to see Mana.
‘You didn’t. I did. You told me to hand out some to their record company… of course being signed to that label they are invited.’ Yoshiki smirked. ‘Oh grow up, Mana wont talk to you unless you talk to him.’
Gackt sighed, ‘I feel sick to my stomach.’ He left Yoshiki alone to go see who else had come along, making sure things were in place as Rei was due in any minute.
‘She’s here!’ Miyavi called inside from the front of the house.
‘Miyavi? What are you doing out here?’ Rei asked as she got to the front door, seeing the blinds all shut and Miyavi standing out the front alone. ‘Erm… has Gacchan gone somewhere?’ She looked at the house questioningly.
‘Yeah, he’s gone shopping with Yoshi-kun.’ Miyavi grinned – his best display of acting yet.
‘So he left you all alone out here?’ Rei chuckled, rummaging her bag for her set of keys Gackt gave her only last week.
She felt the rather large amount of energy coming from inside the house, she could swear she heard some rather familiar voices being shushed. She shook off the feeling, thinking her boyfriend probably left the television on.
The house was unusually darker than it normally was, the curtains were shut and even the candles weren’t on. ‘Come in.’ Rei invited Miyavi in, though just as she closed the door behind him, the lights came on, harder and brighter than it normally is.
‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY REI!!’
Before her, stood a large group of people, Gackt and Yoshiki in front.
She then noticed the place had been rearranged to make room for a party and as Miyavi opened one of the curtains of the windows overlooking the backyard, she could see that there was definitely a lot more food than the members of S.K.I.N could handle.
‘Didn’t think we weren’t going to throw you a party, did you?’ Gackt came up to her and slid his arms around her waist, hugging her close before kissing the top of her head. ‘Happy birthday dear…’ he whispered before letting her go so everyone else could wish her happy birthday.
Tori was late. The damn car had decided to just not start. She was still cursing as she walked up the sidewalk to the house. Hearing the music coming from the backyard she changed tactics and walked around the house. Halfway around the house she stopped dead shocked.
Miyavi and Sugizo were sitting under a tree rather wrapped up in each other.
It wasn’t the fact that they were males that shocked her; she lived in L.A after all. It was Miyavi and Sugizo that threw a pothole at her rim. She cleared her throat loadly.
Sugizo jerked quickly and Miyavi just laid in the grass languidly.
‘I’ll make the assumption that he’s drunk?’ Tori asked carefully.
Sugizo shook his head. ‘We’re both sober.’
Tori rubbed her temple quickly and held a hand up before Sugizo could speak. ‘Does Yoshiki know?’
Sugizo only shook his head.
‘Alright. I won’t tell him. That’s up to you. Although I hear you lost his favorite car?’ She smiled mischievously at them before walking past and into the noise of the party.
‘His favorite car?’ Miyavi asked carefully. ‘We’re so dead.’
‘Better make the most of it then.’ Sugizo smiled down at Miyavi and Miyavi wrapped his arms around Sugizo neck and brought them together.
Gackt had stayed glued to Rei’s side for the majority of the evening. He did not want to cross paths with Mana.
Rei led Gackt to a quiet corner and looked him in the face. ‘Gacchan, what’s wrong?’
‘Wrong? Why would anything be wrong?’ Gackt asked too quickly.
‘You’ve never not socialize.’ Rei answered matter-of-factly.
‘I just want to make sure your evening goes well.’ Gackt replied.
‘Gackt-san.’
Gackt froze. He knew that voice. He could not forget that voice. He turned and forced a smile. ‘Mana-san. Well met. How are you?’
Mana’s face always emotionless studied Gackt a moment. ‘Well. I was a little surprised when we received your invitation…’
‘I gave instructions to Yoshiki that everyone was welcome. Should I have reconsidered that?’ The rude ice-cold tone in Gackt’s voice had Rei stepping forward.
‘Mana-san, I’m pleased to meet you. Thank you for coming to my birthday party.’ Rei bowed politely.
‘I see you’ve taken to…’ Mana was cut off.
‘Do not make a scene here Mana. If you have problems with me so be it, but you are here, for my fiancé’s birthday. Do not forget it.’ Gackt stated coldly.
No expression crossed Mana’s face but to Rei it had looked like he flinched. ‘You are marrying a woman? Are you serious?’
‘What I had with Malice is over. What I was is over. What you were to me is over. Cut your losses Mana, I’m not coming back.’ Gackt answered softly.
‘I wasn’t expecting you to return, after all the dog that runs away is hardly reliable…anyway, I wish you…’ Mana shook his head. ‘I cannot. I can only say you are a disappointment. You always have been.’ Mana walked away.
Rei waited until he was fully out of ear shot. ‘Why did you lie to him?’ She asked in a whisper so no one else would hear.
‘Lie?’ Gackt’s face was puzzled. ‘What did I lie about?’
‘Gackt you dunce.’ Rei smacked his chest. ‘You told him we are engaged.’
‘We’re not?’ Gackt asked half smiling.
Rei opened her mouth to answer just as Tori approached.
‘I’m sorry I’m late Rei. Happy Birthday.’ Tori gave her a hug and pulled an envelope out of her pocket. ‘For you.’
Rei frowned at the envelope and carefully opened it. She pulled out front row tickets and backstage passes marked for all concerts arranged by Tori’s company.
‘Really with you being in S.K.I.N. the passes are probably redundant, but…’ Tori lost her breath as Rei jumped her with a hug.
‘Thank you. I love them. How long are they good for?’ Rei asked.
‘They can be used repeatedly, until your next birthday.’ Tori answered when the air returned to her lungs.
‘Thanks so much.’ Rei repeated.
Tori nodded. ‘You’re welcome. I better go say hi to Yoshiki before he feels neglected.’
Rei and Gackt laughed. ‘Come on. I think he’s at the bar with Pata.’
‘Oh dear. Pata will drink him under the table.’ Tori’s response was automatic and had Gackt and Rei laughing all over again.
The rest of the party went smoothly. Mana had mysteriously vanished and so had Sugizo and Miyavi… nobody really noticed until the last guest had left.
‘Where is Miyavi and Sugizo?’ Yoshiki asked after escorting Izumi and Nao out to the waiting limo. They had entirely too much to drink and as it stood Yoshiki highly doubted they would remember how to use their house keys.
Gackt shrugged. ‘Haven’t seen them since the cake was cut.’
Tori smiled. ‘I would think after losing Yoshiki’s car they would manage to stay out of any further trouble. The car was insured wasn’t it Yo?’ Tori turned to him.
He smiled at her and nodded. ‘But still why they both had to get out of the car because Miyavi had to pee is beyond me.’
Tori, Rei and Gackt started laughing.
‘I hope you don’t believe that.’ Gackt replied. ‘Miyavi won’t piss in a public bathroom if it smells from the doorway. What makes you think he’ll pee in a bush?’
Yoshiki opened his mouth to speak as Miyavi and Sugizo walked in through the patio doors. Miyavi was leaning heavily on Sugizo and Sugizo had an arm wrapped around his waist.
‘Where did you find him and how much did he drink?’ Rei asked.
Sugizo smiled. ‘I can’t answer the drink question as I wasn’t his server. However I found him talking to the statue in the garden.’
‘The samurai or the frog?’ Rei asked.
‘Do I have to answer that?’ Sugizo countered.
Yoshiki shook his head. ‘There’s a limo outside. Get him back to his house.’
Sugizo nodded and lead Miyavi out.
Tori was smiling into her drink.
‘I can’t believe that worked.’ Sugizo muttered to Miyavi as the limo drove away from the house.
‘I’m a good actor.’ Miyavi replied sitting up in the seat stretching.
‘One word from Tori and we’re caught.’ Sugizo reminded.
‘She’s a woman of honor. She’ll keep her word.’ Miyavi wrapped an arm around Sugizo. ‘At least this time we don’t have to worry about losing the car, ne?’
