One Year Later
Matt POV
He was lost in thought, he’d been doing that a lot since Zack died, but when he was lost in thought he wasn’t thinking, and if he wasn’t thinking then he wasn’t remembering.
He wasn’t remembering the feel of Zack’s lips on his own or his rough fingers dancing over his sensitive stomach tracing his tattoos, he wasn’t remembering how perfectly Zack’s body fit with his when they were sleeping in a bunk together or his laugh or how he sometimes chewed his snakebites when he was thinking hard on something. He wasn’t remembering how the sun glinted in his eyes and revealed hidden flecks of gold or the way his cheeks flushed when he was embarrassed or the silly pranks he pulled on Brian or how he always played with Johnny when the rest of them were busy.
“Ten minutes.” The new kid, Jack, was the only one who actually talked to him. Which annoyed him because he didn’t want to talk to anyone; he sighed and rolled off the couch. He took a deep breath and then walked out of the back lounge; everyone else was at the stage getting ready to go on. He took another deep breath when he reached to door and put his mask in place before he walked off the bus and headed for the stage.
Almost a Year Earlier
Everything hurt, the pain was unbearable, he wanted to go back to sleep but the sharp, throbbing, and shooting pains wouldn’t let him rest. A shuddering cough racked his frame and a thick clot of blood oozed out of his mouth. He struggled back to his human form and fell back panting and gasping for air. The pain was still there, but thankfully it was dulled a little by the change and he gratefully fell back asleep.
He woke up with bright sunlight streaming through the trees into his eyes. He groaned and stiffly moved to cover his eyes, he was about to collapse back into sleep when he heard someone laughing. The laugh was close, no more than a few feet; if they walked through the bushes they would see Zack naked and curled underneath a tree. He was in no mood or condition to explain that one so he quickly, painfully, returned to his wolf form. And not a moment to soon, the man walked through the bushes and stopped dead, “Oh shit. Honey don’t let the kids come back here!” he moved a little closer and carefully sat down next to him, “Poor thing.” He murmured; Zack whimpered quietly.
“Holy hell! Honey come here! It’s still alive!” he shouted excitedly. Within seconds there was another person near him, “What do you—Oh my God. What happened to it? Are you sure it’s alive?” her voice was tremulous and she kneeled next to her husband.
“Yeah he made a sound, see look there he’s tryin’ to get up.”
Zack lifted his head for a second and then dropped it again. The man had dark brown hair and brown eyes and a small scattering of freckles across his nose. The woman was also a brunette; her kind brown eyes met Zack’s for a moment and he knew immediately that these people would help him.
“We’ve gotta get him to a hospital or something, it looks like he was hit by a car.” The tremor was gone from her voice and was replaced with iron clad confidence, she gently scratched behind Zack’s ears and he sighed as some of the pain was replaced with the pleasurable feeling.
“I’ll bring the car around.” The man got up and started jogging toward the parking lot.
“Don’t worry little baby, we’ll get you all fixed up.” She crooned softly; Zack weakly flipped his tail. She gave him a small smile and moved to scratch under his chin. Zack was beginning to drift off again but there was rustling in the bushes again and the man reappeared, “Okay, the kids are in the car, where do we wanna put him?”
“I’ll hold him.” She said quietly.
“Are you sure? We could move some stuff around in the back…”
“Travis he’s got a lot’a broken bones, it’ll probably be less painful if I just hold him.”
After a moment the man gave his agreement and Zack felt himself gently being lifted; he whimpered as his bones crunched together.
“Hang on little guy, we’ll get ya’ to the vet and have ‘em take a look at ya’.” He walked carefully trying not to jostle his broken body; Zack tried to keep his crying to a minimum. The man smelled like lavender and spearmint.
“Is that a dog?”
“Where did you get a dog?”
“Can we keep it?”
“What happened to it?”
Zack raised his head and looked at the young boy and older girl in the back seat of the Jeep Liberty. The girl had an Avenged Sevenfold shirt on, if he hadn’t been in so much pain he would’ve laughed, but now all he did was flip his tail again.
“We’ll discuss it on the way to the animal hospital right now you guys need to sit down and buckle up so we can get there.” The woman was sitting in the front seat with a towel on her lap. When the door opened it fanned her sweet scent of lilacs to him.
“What’s the towel for?” Travis asked gently setting Zack on her lap.
“We can use it like a stretcher when we get to the hospital.” She said stroking Zack’s fuzzy ears. Car doors slammed and they were off speeding Zack to the nearest animal hospital.
Matt’s POV (year later)
He walked heavily down the stairs intending to go to his usual place in the back lounge on the bus. This had become his new routine, he would stay on the bus until it was time for the show and then he would get back on the bus after the show. No one really talked to him and when they did they weren’t entirely welcome.
“Hey Shads!”
He winced at the nickname; he didn’t care if the others called him that but Jack was…he wasn’t one of them. Jack really didn’t fit in with them, Matt was pretty sure he knew that but he seemed to shrug it off. His blonde hair and overly excited attitude made him stick out like a sore thumb wherever they were.
“Hey do you wanna go out tonight? There are some chicks that would like to get to know you better.” He wiggled his eyebrows suggestively.
“No thanks.” He murmured; he saw Jack’s shoulders slump as he continued walking away and felt a pang of guilt. Jack wasn’t a bad kid; he just got thrown into the wrong band at the wrong time. He fleetingly thought of going with him to the club just to cheer him up but he didn’t want to be badgered by a bunch of under aged girls for sex. So he went back to the bus and tried to forget.
Zack’s POV (year earlier)
“Well the surgery went about as well as it could; given the condition he was in. We’ve got the bones back where they should be and stopped the internal bleeding. We’re going to keep him overnight in observation.” The doctor’s muffled words made Zack’s heart sink; he was eternally grateful for the surgery, but now that everything was set he was would be healed within the next couple of hours. He heard the excited and relieved cries of the family that had rescued him. He wagged his tail in thanks even though they couldn’t see him.
He could get used to being waited on hand and foot; with every sound he made someone would be at his side in a moment checking the different instruments and giving him treats. But he missed Matt and Syn and Johnny and Jimmy; he wanted his pack. Nice as these people were they were not his family.
As closing time came and went and the hospital grew quiet he whimpered as loneliness settled on him like lead blanket. He wanted Matt, wanted to be close to him, cuddled against his warm chest and on the bus going to the next venue.
Carefully he sat up, in his wolf form he had plenty of room in the kennel, but he needed thumbs to get the door open. He changed and then had to change back to reposition himself so he could get the door open. Thankfully the door wasn’t locked and he lifted the latch and was free.
He realized he had a problem as soon as he managed to weasel his way out of the clinic; he had no idea where he was.
He roamed around the silent streets vainly searching for anything that would tell him where he was. Unfortunately it seemed he had been dropped in the middle of Suburbia Land. After he had passed through, what he assumed to be the town center, which consisted of a Marathon, Walgreens, CVS, and Marsh, he found nothing but block after block of cookie cutter houses.
Finally tired and sore from his still healing wounds he collapsed under a large flowery bush in someone’s front yard and slipped into unconsciousness.
Brian’s POV (year later)
He whimpered pitifully in his sleep, his head tossed back and forth, and his body writhed restlessly. He had been doing this for months, Brian had no idea what the dream was about but he was pretty sure he didn’t care. He whimpered again and his body quieted for a moment before he started jerking again, trying to wake himself up. His eyes fluttered open for a moment but the dream dragged him back under and he continued to cry miserably.
Fleetingly he thought about waking him up, the lack of peaceful sleep was getting to him; he couldn’t remember where the were or where they were going, he’d actually forgotten the opening line to Beast and the Harlot the other night, and he looked like hell. But the moment of charity passed and Brian closed the door again leaving Matt to his nightmare.
Matt’s POV (year later)
He was in England, and he knew exactly where he was; the small little brook that emptied into an even smaller pool of water, Zack was naked, sitting next to the water staring into space. He whimpered as he tried to keep his legs from moving, but like every night before he walked through the bushes, Zack didn’t turn to look at him, when he reached him he gently pulled on the raven-haired man’s arm to get him to turn around, and just like every night before he hoped that it would be different from all the other nights.
It wasn’t, it never was. Zack turned lifelessly; his bright green eyes were a dull olive, a trail of blood oozed out of the corner of his mouth. He tried to get away from the body, for a brief second the dreamscape changed and he was suddenly on the bus, hope surged in him, but the bus disappeared and he was back with Zack. Dead green eyes continued to stare at him as Zack jerkily got to his feet, his flawless pearly skin broke open as an invisible force crushed him. Bloodied and cream colored bones stuck out at all angles, his eyes never left Matt’s, the dull olive that saw nothing held him prisoner. Matt tried to scream as the wind kicked up but he stayed silent. Zack disappeared and Matt felt dread ripple through him as he tried to fight the dream.
Zack reappeared in front of him only a couple inches away and with a hideous shriek he drove a knife through his chest. The silver blade pierced his heart but didn’t kill him like it should have; instead he fell to the ground writhing in agony. Olive eyes watched him distantly as black blood gurgled out of him; something heavy landed on him and shoved the knife deeper. Synyster snarled and drove his own knife through his neck and jerked it to the side nearly decapitating him. Jimmy stood nonchalantly off to the side; Johnny stood by Zack and stared at him maliciously. Brian got off of him and went to stand next to Zack as well; Jimmy started to walk over to the other three and roughly kicked him into the stream out of his way.
The beautiful, clear water turned to liquid sliver and started dissolving his flesh; he tried to scream again and the silver filled his mouth and ran down his throat and started to liquefy his vulnerable organs.
“Matt!” Jimmy appeared over him again, this was different. He didn’t know why Jimmy was over him, but it couldn’t be a good thing he thrashed and tried to get away from him as the silver stream continued to eat away at his body.
“Matt, Matt wake up!” something cold splashed on his face and he sat up, finally awake. Someone pressed a cool cloth to his neck; he ducked away from the touch still jumpy from the dream.
“Relax.” Brian’s voice was flat and he pressed the towel on his neck again. His chest and neck hurt, he looked down and saw bloody scratches on his chest. He blinked and lifted one of his hands, they were covered in blood.
“What happened?” his hoarse voice was barely more than a whisper; he almost hadn’t even bothered asking, the hostility in the room was palpable.
“You had a nightmare.” Jimmy said coolly; Matt stayed quiet after that, obviously they still weren’t talking to him. He reached up and grabbed the towel from Brian, “I’ll get it.” He whispered. Brian got up and left without a word, Jimmy and Johnny followed. The door closed behind them with a quiet ‘click’.
The ache in his chest flared up as he watched them go, he wanted to get up and run after them, beg them to stay and keep the nightmare away.
His chest hurt and it wasn’t only from the scratches, his heartbeat echoed hollowly in his ears and his throat tightened as he fought back the wave of misery that threatened to drown him.
He thought again about buying some silver nitrate and pouring some into a shot glass and making all of the pain go away. But he was terrified of the afterlife, if there was one. What if Zack was there waiting for him and hated him? What if the dream was more than that, what if it was a preview to what would happen to him when he died? He shuddered and looked at the door, he could deal with angry band mates, but he couldn’t deal with an eternity of knowing Zack hated him.
Zack’s POV (year earlier)
He was woken up rather rudely the next morning by a piercing shriek. He jumped to his feet absolutely terrified; the woman, whom he guessed, lived in the house had a newspaper clutched to her chest, she was staring at Zack like he was the Anti-Christ. He smoky grey cat was a few feet away hissing and spitting and as fluffed up as it could get. Zack whimpered and took off desperate to get away from the woman’s sharp screech.
He roamed around the neighborhood searching for something to eat and drink. All he found were more terrified people. His thick coat intensified the bright sun’s heat, by noon he was panting horribly and his mouth was bone dry. He needed water before he passed out. A sluggish breeze kicked up and brought with it the heavenly scent of water. He followed his nose for a block or two and found a woman watering the flowers on her front porch, her back was to him but he could clearly smell her flowery lilac scent.
Hope ballooned in him; surely this nice lady wouldn’t run him off. He woofed as friendly as he could; the lady turned surprised and then her eyes widened in confusion, “Travis?” she called without taking her eyes off of Zack’s. Travis came out shirtless and in blue jeans, he turned to see what his wife was staring at and his jaw dropped, “How? What? Where did he?” he slowly stepped off the porch and made his cautious approach to Zack. Zack wagged his tail encouragingly, all he really wanted was a drink, but if he had to play nice to get it he would.
“Hey little guy, the vet said it was going to be weeks before you were on your feet again?” Travis was staring at him in absolute awe. Zack mentally swore at himself for forgetting that little detail.
“Here he’s gotta be hot, look at that thick coat.” The woman appeared next to her husband holding a metal dish filled with water, “C’mere pretty boy, you want some water?” she set the water on the brick path that led to their front porch. Zack looked at the man unsure of what he was thinking; he laughed and stepped aside, “C’mon pup, no one’s gonna hurt ya’.”
Zack trotted into the yard and thirstily drank down the water, someone timidly ran their hand down his back, “He’s so soft! He must be some kind of husky. He seems friendly, I wonder who would get rid of him?” the woman’s voice was soft and she started to scratch behind his ears; Zack wagged his tail and finished the water.
“Sarah we can’t keep him. Look at how big he is! If he is a husky then we don’t have the yard for him, do you know how much exercise those dogs need? We don’t have the time, he’ll just be miserable.” Travis said shaking his head.
“He found us Travis, that’s gotta mean something.” She laughed as Zack licked her cheek in thanks for the water. Honestly he didn’t know what these people were talking about, he just wanted some water, he’d never set off with the intention of finding them. Travis sighed, “How about he stays for the night and then we find a home for him?”
“Alright.” There was an undertone of laughter in Sarah’s voice.
“I mean it, he’s only staying for the night and then we’ll start looking for a new home.”
Matt’s POV (year later)
He padded silently to the front lounge, it was almost noon, they had sound check in forty-five minutes and everyone else was already at the stage. He poured a cup of coffee and sat heavily at the table; he stared at the swirling black liquid and drifted into his safe zone of no thinking.
“Matt.”
Slowly he roused himself and looked at Jimmy tiredly.
“We have sound check in five minutes.” And with that he was gone. Matt looked at his cold coffee and then sighed and forced himself to get off the bus.
Zack’s POV (year later)
“Mom! Can I go? Can I go?” Kelly, the Bennett’s fifteen year old daughter, bounded into the room practically vibrating with excitement; she spun in a circle and laughed when Zack, now called Luke, barked and bounced with her.
“Go to what sweetheart?” Sarah looked up from balancing her checkbook and gave her daughter a questioning look.
“The Avenged Sevenfold concert tonight! Can I go?” She put up her best puppy eyes.
“Honey I told you that the tickets were too expensive and your father and my schedules are too busy.” She sighed tiredly and rubbed her eyes.
“No mom, Sadie won tickets off of some radio show! Melissa, Sadie, Tom, and Chris are going and they want me to go too! Please can I go, please, please, pleeeeease?” Sarah still shook her head, “I’m not letting you go to that concert without one of us with you,” she held up a hand to stop her protest, “I know how much you like them, but I don’t trust the people at the concert to leave a group of teenage girls alone.”
“But Chris and Tom are going too.” She pleaded. Sarah snorted, “That doesn’t make me feel any better.”
Zack had quieted as soon as Kelly said Avenged Sevenfold. His pack, his family, they were in town. They were here. Suddenly his excitement and joy bubbled over and he jumped up and barked excitedly.
“Luke, please! No barking in the house.” Sarah said sternly. He dropped his tail and quieted and ran in circles instead.
“What about Luke! Can I take Luke with me? He’ll keep me safe.” Kelly was reaching now, but Zack ran over to Sarah and gave her his own puppy eyes and she started to crack.
“Do they allow dogs?” she asked.
“Yes! As long as their leashed and they don’t like go after people or whatever.”
“Alright, take Luke; but, I want a call in between bands, if anyone starts to bother you tell security and please, stay in a group. I don’t want you going off by yourself even if you have Luke.”
Kelly squealed delightedly and pounced on her mom, “Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love you!” then she ran off to call her friends. Zack pounced on her too and licked her face, “Okay, okay Luke,” she laughed, “we’ll go on a walk in a few minutes and then you get to go with Kelly.” She ruffled his fur and then went back to her checkbook.
Matt’s POV
He stood in the back lounge staring at the wall totally lost inside himself. They had done the sound check and it was painfully obvious to him that he was seriously slipping. He had stumbled over words, sang the wrong verse, and even skipped a song. The lack of sleep was seriously affecting him but it wasn’t like he could just take a nap, every time he closed his eyes Zack’s eyes stared back at him.
“Jesus Matt, wake up!” Brian shoved him roughly and he went crashing to the floor. He blinked and shook himself and slowly got to his feet.
“I’ve been trying to wake you up for almost five fucking minutes, pull yourself together.” He growled. It took a moment for Matt to process his words, his sleep deprived mind was slowly trying to kick start itself.
“What?” he asked slowly.
“I said I’ve been trying--”
“No, what do you want?” Matt said tiredly rubbing his eyes.
He tossed a set list at him, “Get your shit together.” He said curtly and then he turned and left. Matt watched him leave and then slowly collapsed on the floor and didn’t move.
Zack’s POV
He didn’t mind Kelly’s friends, they were a little loud for his sensitive ears but they had the back window rolled down so he could stick his head out and feel the wind ruffling his fur.
He knew he was going to see Matt tonight and he was more than overjoyed at that thought, but there was also a heavy misery weighing on his heart. The Bennett family had taken him in and kept him fed and for the most part happy; he felt rotten just up and leaving them without any excuse.
They reached the venue and Zack felt his heart soar when he smelled the familiar scents of tour. He barked excitedly and hopped out of the car with Kelly holding tightly to his leash.
“See I told you Luke liked A7x!” She laughed; her friends snorted and jeered but their spirits were high and they pranced up to the line to wait for the gates to open.
Zack sat calmly biding his time, he knew where the buses were parked and he prayed he got there Matt would be there.
He needed to see Matt; it was a craving deep inside him, a hunger for his touch, his voice, his kiss, his scent. He needed to see his mate. As the crowd began shuffling forward Zack made his move; Kelly wasn’t holding his leash very tightly, he had never misbehaved on it before. He saw a gap in the fence and took off toward it. He heard Kelly’s surprised cry but he needed to see Matt, he needed him. Security was coming after him but they were far to slow for him, he slipped through the gap and headed toward the buses.
He found their bus easily enough and saw a blond man he didn’t know standing outside of it smoking, but the door was open and he darted in ignoring the surprised man’s cry. Once he was on the bus he shifted, “Matt!” he ran to the bunk section and checked all the bunks, “Matthew!” he ran to the back lounge.
Matt’s POV
Out of his haze he heard a voice that was almost unfamiliar. He lifted his head and turned he felt dread fill his heart; he must’ve fallen asleep, Zack was standing in the doorway. But his eyes, his beautiful, vibrant green eyes were alive with emotion, not the dull unfeeling olive. Then Zack was at his side and then there was the sweet feeling of his lips pressing against his, his warm body on his.
“Matt, Matty” his warm breath was on his lips and then he felt a silky tongue brush across his bottom lip and he opened his mouth and let Zack in.
His tongue was warm and smooth against his; he groaned and pulled Zack closer. His hands roamed over Zack’s silky skin reveling in the softness he had longed for, for months. The kiss was cut short by Zack’s quiet swear and then Matt was staring at his fuzzy face. Jack ran in, “The hell? Matt are you okay, I don’t know where it came from!”
Matt started screaming inside his head as Jack pulled him off the floor and dragged him away from Zack.
“He’s fine, Jack, he’s fine.” He said as calmly as he could; he really wanted to throw Jack off the bus and go back to what he and Zack had been doing.
“I’ll take care of him, why don’t you go find out if someone has reported him missing or something.” He said eyeing Zack’s collar. Jack nodded and ran off the bus. Zack changed back to his human form and Matt fell to his knees again, “Zachary…”
Zack walked forward and Matt wrapped his arms around his waist and covered his silky stomach with kisses.
“Zachary. I’m sorry, Gods Zack, please forgive me.” He whispered closing his eyes and resting his cheek against his smooth stomach. Zack gently raised his chin, “I’m here aren’t I? I love you Matt,” he kneeled in front of Matt so they were eye level, “You’re all I’ve thought about since I woke up.” He whispered. Matt kissed him passionately and Zack wrapped his arms around his neck and pulled him closer, deepening their heated kiss.
“What is Jack--” Jimmy’s sentence dropped off; Matt slowly broke the kiss, lightly sucking on one of Zack’s snakebites, and turned to look at him. He’d never seen the large wolf speechless, Jimmy’s eyes were huge and he was staring at Zack like…well like he’d seen a ghost, and his face was chalk white.
“Hi Jimmy.” Zack said quietly and then he pulled Matt’s head back around and kissed him again.
Zack’s POV
He found Matt lying motionless in the back lounge facing the wall.
“Matt?” he whispered. Matt slowly lifted his head and turned to look at him; his breath caught when he saw his mate.
There were dark circles under Matt’s eyes, his hair was mussed and dull and grainy black stubble covered his chin. He could figure out what had happened to him later, now, he ran over to him and covered his full, smooth lips with his own. He broke the innocent kiss, his forehead resting against Matt’s, “Matt, Matty.”
Then he covered his mouth again; he ran his tongue over Matt’s lip and slipped into his blazing mouth. He had no idea how deep his craving for Matt had been until he finally tasted him again. Matt made a quiet sound and pulled him closer; their tongues danced and slid against each other slowly, savoring each other.
He was so lost in Matt he almost missed the loud footsteps running toward the back room. He pulled away from Matt and swore at the unfamiliar scent, he shifted just in time. The blond man from outside the bus barged in wild-eyed, “The hell? Matt are you okay, I don’t know where it came from!”
He could see Matt fighting to control himself as the strange man dragged him away, Zack was half-tempted to go after him, but Matt spoke before he had the chance, “He’s fine, Jack, he’s fine.” He actually sounded fairly calm but Zack could easily see the tell-tale signs of stress in his mate’s body.
“I’ll take care of him, why don’t you go find out if someone has reported him missing or something.”
Zack felt a stab of guilt as he remembered the collar around his neck, he had forgotten all about Kelly and Sarah had asked him to keep her safe.
The man, Jack, immediately ran off the bus; as soon as Zack was sure he was gone he changed back. Matt sank to his knees, “Zachary…” he looked up at him with as much hope as fear. Zack felt his heart clinch at the pain he saw there as well; he walked over to him and Matt wrapped his arms around his waist. He pressed light kisses to his bare stomach; his warm breath tickled his skin, “Zachary. I’m sorry, Gods Zack, please forgive me.”
Zack could barely hear the quiet words; Matt’s feathery eyelashes brushed his skin as he pressed his rough cheek to his pale stomach. He gently pulled his mate’s head up to look at him, “I’m here aren’t I? I love you Matt,” he slipped to his knees inside of Matt’s loose embrace and looked him in the eye, “You’re all I’ve thought about since I woke up.” He whispered quietly. Matt pulled him close and kissed him; his tongue glided across his bottom lip and Zack let him in and greedily sucked on his tongue and pulled him closer.
Faintly he heard something that sounded like words and then Matt’s tongue left his mouth and his lips started to pull away; lightly Matt held one of his snakebites between his lips for an extra second before he finally let go and turned to look at Jimmy.
If Zack hadn’t been annoyed at yet *another* interruption he definitely would’ve found Jimmy’s expression to be hilarious. His eyes were huge and his mouth was hanging open, his face was sheet white and he was pretty sure he wasn’t breathing.
“Hi Jimmy.” And then he pulled Matt’s face back around and finished their kiss.
When they pulled away again Jimmy was still standing there, he had started breathing again but he was still paler than a glass of milk. Zack smirked, “What do you want a kiss too?” he broke into a fit of giggles when Jimmy made a choking sound and then ran over and pulled him into a fierce hug.
“I thought you were gone.” He whispered; Zack buried his head in his neck and took in his familiar scent, but there was an overtone of something unfamiliar.
“Why do you smell like lemons?” Zack asked rubbing his head on his neck; he didn’t know who the unfamiliar scent belonged to but Jimmy was in his pack, not theirs.
“Lemons?” Matt and Jimmy said at the same time.
“Jack, he smells Jack.” Matt said brushing his nose across Jimmy’s shoulder.
“Oh. He gave me a hug…I don’t really know why. He’s weird like that.” Jimmy shrugged; Zack growled softly and continued to rub away the strange scent.
“Zack we all smell like him, he’s been with us for a couple months.” Matt said quietly.
“You don’t.”
Matt winced a little, “I haven’t been out much.” He said turning to stare at the wall. Zack looked up at Jimmy confused but the wolf’s blue eyes betrayed nothing.
Someone clattered up the stairs and Zack quickly shifted to his wolf form and watched Jack excitedly run over to them, “There’s a girl here that says her dog jumped away from her when they were coming in, a big red and white husky.” He panted.
“Why are you so outta breath?” Jimmy asked looking him over.
“I ran.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
Zack looked at the blonde man and then Jimmy, he hadn’t been joking when he said this kid was weird.
“Anyway, security has her out by the gate.” He smiled and then turned and bounded off the bus again.
Once he was off the bus Jimmy looked at Matt and raised an eyebrow, “Well, what do we do now?”
Matt looked at the floor and rubbed his temple for a moment while he thought, “I’m going to tell her the truth.” He said looking at Zack.
“What?” Jimmy said, his eyes widening again. Matt sat on the floor and Zack happily pounced on him and licked his face, he laughed and pushed Zack into his lap and held him there securely.
“I’m going to tell her that Zack is ours, he ran off the bus one night and we thought he was gone.” He sighed; he leaned his head back and loosened his grip on Zack so the fuzzy wolf could nuzzle under his chin.
“She’ll never buy it.” Jimmy said matter-of-factly.
“Well I’m too tired to come up with anything more complex than that so she’ll have to buy it.” Matt mumbled; it sounded like he was already falling asleep.
“I’ll take him Matt. Go to sleep.” Jimmy said quietly there was a contrite undertone to his voice that made Zack turn and look at him sharply. If they had anything to do with Matt’s degraded condition there was going to be Hell to pay. Matt roused himself and shook his head, “I won’t be able to sleep without him.” He murmured; Zack hopped off his lap and whined worriedly as he slowly stood.
“I’m fine Zack, just tired.” He said scratching him behind his ears; Zack stood on his back legs and licked his stubbly cheek.
“C’mon angel.” Matt whispered as he started to walk to the door; Zack gave Jimmy a hard look for a moment but the wolf had apparently found something fascinating on the floor and he refused to look at him. Zack huffed quietly and then trotted after Matt.
“Oh…hi? Hi! Um, wow, I wasn’t…Oh my God I sound like an idiot.” Kelly clapped a hand over her mouth and her friends stared in awe as Matt introduced himself. Zack looked at them and laughed in his wolf form, which was basically meant his tail was wagging back and forth at a hundred miles an hour and he had a massive grin on his face with his tongue hanging out the side. He could see Matt hiding his smile as Kelly organized her thoughts.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t. I mean, I hope he didn’t cause any problems; he’s never taken off like that before.” She sounded completely frazzled and that only made Zack laugh harder. He could never understand why people got so flustered around them.
“He does that sometimes.” Matt said looking down at him and scratching the back of his head.
“Yeah…Wait, how do you know?” Kelly put the hand back over her mouth when she realized how rude the question was. Matt laughed quietly, “He’s mine. He ran off the bus last year, I thought he was gone.”
Zack wiggled like jell-o and then jumped up and licked his face again.
“Thank you.” Matt laughed and scratched his back.
“We found him at a rest stop; he got hit by a car. But, wow, he’s yours. That is so cool! Where did you get him from? He’s so pretty I’ve never seen another dog like him.”
“One of our friends breeds show dogs, he doesn’t have the right colors for show, so I got him.”
“Ha! I told you he was a show dog!” Melissa crowed, “Wait, you don’t show him?”
Matt held back another smile and shook his head, “No, but he’s got the vanity of a show dog.”
Zack puffed himself up indignantly, if anyone had a vanity issue it was Synyster, not him.
“What’s his name? We’ve been calling him Luke.” Kelly said crouching down; Zack wiggled even more excitedly and ran over to her.
“Jaxx.” Matt said unhesitatingly. Zack stopped and looked at him, Jaxx? Well, it was certainly better than Luke.
“My little brother wanted to call him Red Baron.” She laughed as Zack climbed in her lap and licked her face. He was going to miss these nice people; the next time they came through town they would have to send some tickets their way.
“Jaxx, control yourself.” Matt snickered. He jumped off Kelly and trotted back over to his mate’s side and then started rolling around on the ground.
“You are far too hyper.” Matt said looking down at him laughing; Zack stopped rolling for a second, sneezed, and then went back to rolling. Matt snorted, “Smart ass.”
Kelly and her friends were laughing hysterically as Zack continued to act like a nut.
“Why don’t you go find Johnny, I’m sure he’d love to see you.” Matt suggested leaning down and tickling his stomach; Zack rolled onto his feet and shook himself. He looked at Kelly and ran over to her again, “Bye Luke, I’m gonna miss you. Be good and stay away from cars okay?” she kissed the top of his head and gave him one last pat good-bye and then he darted off to go find his eternal playmate Johnny.
He followed Johnny’s scent around the stage, dodging security, and then looped back around to the bus. He jumped up the stairs and found Johnny curled on Jimmy’s lap. He barked joyfully and jumped on the couch with them.
“*Zack!*” Johnny pulled him into his arms in a crushing hug and whimpered quietly; Zack lovingly licked his neck and nuzzled his hair.
“Johnny I’m sure he needs to breathe.” Jimmy said quietly. Johnny loosened his arms a little but didn’t let go. Zack snuggled into a more comfortable position and let the young wolf hold him.
Matt trudged onto the bus a while later, he looked exhausted. Zack wriggled out of Johnny’s grasp and ran over to him. Matt smiled and sank to the floor, Zack climbed into his lap and sighed softly as his mate’s breathing immediately began to even out and deepen. Matt was sound asleep in minutes, his arms wrapped loosely around Zack’s midsection. Zack rested his head on his shoulder and began sorting some of his troubled thoughts.
He had expected Matt to look a little disheveled but this was a little extreme. He looked like he was half-dead and he was almost delirious with exhaustion. He shifted to his human form and Matt started to wake up but Zack gently hushed him back into sleep. Once Matt had settled back into a deeper sleep he turned a critical eye on Jimmy and Johnny; Jimmy seemed to shrink under his gaze and Johnny curled against his side and tried to hide.
“What did you do to him?” Zack’s voice was cold. Jimmy and Johnny shrank even more and didn’t answer. Before Zack could question them further he was forced to shift back as Jack and Brian clattered onto the bus.
“The dog was huge man you should’ve seen…it…What is the giant dog still doing here?” Jack stared wide-eyed at Zack curled on Matt’s lap. Matt started to wake up again and Zack tried to lull him back into sleep but he struggled into the waking world anyway.
Brian was staring at him with disbelief, love, and fear. Zack stayed with Matt and wagged his tail in greeting.
“It’s Matt’s dog.” Jimmy said giving Johnny and Brian a stern look, the other two immediately gave small nods of understanding.
“What? Matt’s dog? How…?” Jack looked at all of them totally confused.
“We’ll sort it out later; we’re due on stage in ten minutes.” Brian cut in; he gave Zack another incredulous look and then turned to leave again. Zack whimpered as they started to file off the bus. Matt kneeled next to him and held him close, “I’ll be back as soon as I can angel.” He whispered and then he painfully pulled himself away.
