Marilyn hauled herself off the bed. She stretched and shivered in the chilly attic. Her stomach was already rolling, and she cringed. She was so tired of saying good morning to the world by praying to the porcelain god.
She rushed down the attic stairs and slid in front of the toilet bowl. Minutes or hours passed by, time never mattered here. When she was able to life her head, a throat cleared behind her. Blushing, Marilyn looked towards the doorway.
“You don’t look like you feel good at all.” Criss frowned. Marilyn rolled her eyes. Boy, that was a dumb thing to say if anything was.
“I’m pregnant. I feel like death warmed over.” She eased back on her heels. Criss offered her a hand and helped her up off the floor.
“I have a surprise for you.” He sounded giddy and mysterious, a child on Christmas morning. Marilyn was in no mood to play a game, but she wanted to humor him. He probably wanted to show her a new trick or something
“Ta-da!”
Sitting on Dimitra’s kitchen table was as big white basket. Marilyn looked at him curiously before stepping towards it. What in the world was he planning now?
The basket was overflowing with citrus fruit, ginger ale, sour candies, peppermint tea, rice cereal, and new paper backs. She looked with confusion at the man who had put a baby inside of her.
“What’s all this, Criss?”
“I went online last night because Mom said you were having trouble with morning sickness. I looked up every cure I could find. There’s sour candy, and someone said sniffing lemons would help. Oh, and there’s some alcohol wipes, because someone said smelling those would help, but I don’t know if it’s good for the baby. And Mom said you were running out of books to read, so I went ahead and got a couple and--,” he stopped when he noticed she wasn’t saying anything.
“You hate all of it.”
“No! No, Criss.” Marilyn stepped towards him.
“I just wanted to do something to make you feel better. I’m sorry, Marilyn.” He sighed. The pregnant girl grabbed her hands and held them tightly.
“I love it, Criss!”
“You do?” he perked up.
“Yes! This is probably the nicest thing that anyone has ever done for me.” She smiled. “I can’t believe that you went through all that effort for me.” She unwrapped a sour candy and popped it into her mouth.
“I’m happy.” Criss beamed. He looked around. “Where’s my mom?”
“Went shopping early.”
“Hungry?” he asked Marilyn. She nodded.
“Starving.”
“I’ll take you out to breakfast.” Criss reached for his keys. Marilyn’s face lit up.
“Like a date?”
“Sure. Just like a date.” Criss smiled.
**
Marilyn sat across from him in the booth. She was wearing a long dress, pulled in tight at the waist. Her sleeves were a little puffed, and she had a white scarf in her hair and white gloves. Her lips were painted bright red, and she was wearing white cats eye sunglasses.
Criss didn’t know whether to laugh or kiss her. She looked beautiful and a little ridiculous.
“What are you having?” Criss asked. Marilyn shrugged.
“I don’t know, what’s good here?”
“Pretty much everything.” He smiled.
“This feels so strange.” Marilyn played with her silverware. “I mean, we’re sort of doing all of this backwards, aren’t we? You’re supposed to do the whole date thing and then make a baby.”
“I’ve never done anything the proper way, Marilyn. Doesn’t make sense that I should do this the right way either, does it?” Criss smiled at her. Marilyn smiled and sighed.
“I guess I'm just scared.”
“Well, you sort of have the right to be. You know that, don't you?”
“Yes.” she rubbed her face. “I'm sorry. I don't want to be a downer. I mean, you're finally taking me out on a date. I really want to enjoy it, you know?”
“Yeah, Marilyn. I know.” he reached across the table and covered her hand with his. She looked up with a small, pretty smile.
“So do you think you're ready to tell me about your family?”
The look on her face turned stony and she pulled her hand away from his.

“There isn't too much to tell. They're all gone now, Criss. I don't have a family.”
“I know, but what happened to them?” he persisted. Marilyn shook her head.
“My dad drank himself to death and my mom died in a car accident. I didn't have any brothers or sisters. She died two years ago, and I moved out here because I couldn't afford to keep the house up on my own.” it all came out at once. Criss blinked at her.
“I came with like, three suitcases and a photo album. I sold everything else except for my mom's jewelry. I kept that.”
“I see.” Criss stared at her for a minute. Actually, it was a strange idea for him to have no family at all. He reached for her hand again, not entirely surprised when she tried to pull away.
“Don't back away from me like this, Marilyn.”
“I'm not, I'm just upset.” she said it through clenched teeth.
“So do you want a family?”
“What do you mean? Of course I want a family.” she looked at him in shock. “That's why I wanted to keep the baby. Because I want to have a family again. Criss, I'm just so tired of being alone.”
“You're not alone.” he said softly. He reached out and cupped her face. “I won't let you be alone.”
