Kelly took a deep breath as her forehead rested in her hands, "What do you mean the single isn't coming out today?"
"It's just being pushed back a few days," Jeff said carefully.
Kelly closed her eyes, calming herself down before she completely lost it. When she spoke her voice was soft and deliberate, "How many days are a few?"
"It'll come out Friday."
"Friday..."
"Yes."
"The single needs to come out today," Kelly looked at him, surprising herself at how well she was managing to keep her anger and frustration in check.
"I'm sorry, but it's not going to."
"Damn it Jeff," Kelly stood quickly, her eyes ablaze. "I told everybody that song was coming out today. The freaking vitamin water promotion kicks off tomorrow. Do you realize what that means? Everyone is going to hear the remix before they hear the actual song. Does that not sound the slightest bit fucked up to you?"
"Look, Kelly, I understand that you're upset--"
"No, you don't understand. I told everybody including the media and my fans that that song was coming out today. With all the mess already surrounding the album, can you imagine how it'll look when they found out I was wrong?"
"It's not that big of a deal."
"It's a very big deal, Jeff, and if you can't see that..."
"If I can't see that, then what?"
Kelly shook her head, "I want a private meeting with Clive."
"What?" Jeff's eyes widened.
"You heard me."
"I don't think that's a very good idea," he shook his head.
"Either you set this up, or I'll walk into his office myself and demand that he speaks to me."
Jeff nodded, "I'll do it."
"Good," Kelly grabbed her purse, walking out of the office.

"So," Kate sat down next to Kelly on the edge of the stage. "The guys over there made a bet with me that I wouldn't be able to start a conversation with the most beautiful girl in the room...wanna go out for drinks later with the money I just won?"
Kelly turned to her with a raised eyebrow, "Huh?"
"Just trying to do my job," she shrugged.
"Your job?" Kelly asked curiously.
"Make you laugh...obviously I suck at it today."
Kelly let out a soft laugh, wrapping a loose arm around her, "You don't have to make me laugh, although that is a perk. Remember why I said having you around helps?"
"Because I'm refreshing?"
"Yes, because at the risk of me sound full of myself, you are one of the few people that I have met that was completely ok with being yourself around me, and at the same time you don't walk on eggshells around me either, which I love."
"Yes people?"
"Yes people," she nodded. "Can't stand them. So don't worry about having to try to make me laugh. You're good as is."
"So...what's got you so down? Slime ball problems?"
"Actually, I feel bad for the way I talked to him," Kelly admitted. "I don't know...I know he has ulterior motives, I can see that now, but he didn't deserve the way I went off on him. He wants this album released just as much as I do."
"You were just upset," Kate shrugged.
"I can't believe they pushed the date back, even if it's just till the end of the week--it's even more drama for the album. I guess I felt Jeff should've stopped them, but it's not like he could really do anything."
"Can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
"How long do you plan on keeping Jeff around?" she looked at her curiously.
"Until the album comes out. He's fought hard for it, maybe not in a way that most people respect, but he has fought hard, so he deserves to be here through that."
Kate nodded, "You have a lot of heart, you know that?"
"I hope so," Kelly sighed. "I told Jeff to set up a private meeting between me and Clive. I'm gonna need all the heart I can get to be able to get through that, I'm afraid."
"Don' worry...you have plenty."
Kelly gave a small smile.
"So, how bout I try again?"
"Alright," she nodded.
"Hey, baby, are you a sweater? Cause you have me feeling warm all over."
Kelly laughed openly, shaking her head.
Kate grinned, "I got bored last night and found this site full of pickup lines."
"You are definitely something special," Kelly giggled, pulling her arm back as she stood, offering the taller girl a hand. "How about we get started on rehearsals?"
"You're in a good mood now?"
"Yea," she smiled, giving her hand a gentle squeeze before letting it go. "Thanks."

Kelly offered a smile as she reached her hand out, shaking the legendary executives hand, "Hi."
"Hi," Clive nodded, motioning to the chair across the small table for her to sit in his favorite restaurant. "Would you like anything to drink?"
"I'm fine," she shook her head. "Thanks for agreeing to meet with me. I know this isn't exactly how things are normally done."
"I was interested in what you had to say," he smiled.
Kelly shifted uncomfortably, "Ok, so the thing is, this is my album, and I sincerely believe that is perfect as is, and I don't feel the need to change anything on it."
"Ok," he nodded. "But the thing is, this is not just your album. This is the record company's album. It is not anywhere near perfect. Several top executives all agree that there isn't any radio material on the album, so yes, we do need to change some things on it."
"That's just your opinion."
"Several top executives," Clive repeated.
"That you control?" Kelly raised an eyebrow.
Clive smiled, "I've always liked you, Kelly. You definitely have a lot of passion. Unfortunately, pop music isn't really the best place for that."
"I think we've already had this discussion with my last album."
"And I'm going to tell you the same thing I told you then, don't take this so personally."
"Correct me if I'm mistaking, but weren't you wrong last time, and that song ended up going number one in the world? But who's keeping track, right?"
"A fluke," he allowed.
"All the singles that I wrote on were hits," she reminded.
"I don't care how many number ones you've written in the past, what I care about is if you can write a number one now."
Kelly laughed softly, "You do realize that doesn't make any sense, right? That little theory goes against exactly what you're trying to get me to do. You want me to record songs by people who have written number one songs in the past."
"Yes."
"I have written number one songs in the past," Kelly pointed out. "Plus, who's to say they can write a number one now?"
"And you really think you can?"
Kelly thought for a moment, "I think I can write songs that people relate to; it might not necessarily be that bubble gum crap that will be a sure fire number one but forgotten by the next week, but it will be songs that mean something to people, and songs like that stay with them."
Clive studied her carefully.
Kelly could see the wheels turning in his mind.
"Alright," he smiled.
"Alright?"
"You can have your album."
"I can?"
"Yes."
"How about a release date?"
"I'll have to talk to a few experts."
"An estimate?"
He pursed his lips, "Before your tour's over."
"Ok," she nodded, standing.
"You won't stay for lunch?"
"Sorry, I'm meeting some friends for lunch," she stuck out her hand. "Thank you for meeting with me."
"You're welcome," he shook her hand.

"So?" Ashley asked as Kelly joined her, Jill, and Kate at a small cafe.
"Good," Kelly sighed, sitting down.
"Doesn't sound like it," Kate looked at her curiously.
"I don't trust him," she admitted.
"What did he say?" Ashley questioned.
"I can have my album."
"And a release date?"
"Before the end of my tour."
"That's odd," Kate noted. "Wouldn't you want the album out before the tour so the fans can know the songs?"
"One step at a time. I need sugar or caffeine or alcohol or all three."
"I already ordered you a drink," Ashley replied.
"Thanks," she gave a soft smile. "So, enough about me. How are y'all doing this morning?" she turned to her backup singers.
"What about me?" Ashley asked.
"I already saw you this morning. I'm sure you're probably still very good from the sound of that dream you told me about."
Ashley blushed, making the other three laugh, "Yea, well...you're gay."
"You know, that's still up for debate, but thanks for reminding me," she grinned.
"Debate?" Kate asked.
"Gay...bi..." she shrugged. "So how are y'all?"
"Good."
"Let's let Jill talk for once," Kelly replied, winking at Kate before turning to her other backup singer. "What's up girlie?"
"Nothing," Jill replied simply.
"Woman of few words," Kelly nodded.
"You're such a dork."
"So I've heard. Speaking of things I've heard...I heard you had a serious night of fun a couple nights ago."
It was now Jill's turn to blush, "Where did you hear that?"
"I have my sources," she smiled. "So who's the lucky girl?"
Jill shrugged.
"Oh, come on, from what I hear you were all over each other."
"I don't know," Jill replied.
"Liar."
"No," Kate giggled. "She's being serious. I asked her the girl's name after I saw her sneak out of the apartment the next morning. She didn't have a clue."
Kelly's jaw dropped, "You're a whore!"
Jill was now crimson, "Am not. I was just a little...tipsy."
"She was wasted," Kate noted.
"Dude," Jill pushed her playfully. "As a best friend, you suck."
Kate laughed.
"I can't believe it," Kelly shook her head. "Little miss shy and quiet had a one night stand."
"One hell of a one night stand," Kate nodded.
Jill's eyes grew wide.
"What? Y'all keep me awake making that much noise, and you expect me not to rag on you for it?"
"I'm so never bringing anyone home ever again," Jill placed her head in her hands.
"You're saying you've never done that, Kate?" Kelly questioned.
Kate blushed.
Jill grinned, "I believe she proposed to the guy the morning after because she was afraid of how it would look."
"Did not!" Kate argued.
"Oh my God, you so did. That guy ran out of the apartment so fast," she laughed.
"Yea, but that was the only one night stand. You have them all the time."
"I'll give you that, but that wasn't your only proposal."
"One other time, and you'll never let it go."
"You knew the guy for three weeks."
Kelly raised an eyebrow, looking at the taller blonde.
"My commitment issues are a kinda opposite of yours," Kate explained sheepishly.
Kelly laughed, "Slightly."
