Disclaimer: This is a work of fiction. I do not know Kelly Clarkson. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
I just realized I forgot to mention in the beginning that all the long scenes in italics are flashbacks. I think that usually is pretty clear in fics but I fail for not mentioning it before, so I'm sorry lol thanks for reading and reviewing, I appreciate it :)
Jill was like her equivalent of what Ashley was to Kelly. The girl knew her like the back of her own hand, so she had no doubt that she would be calling her out on her attitude the second that Kelly excused herself to use the bathroom. She straightened up against the bar, preparing herself for the big talk, when she spotted Jill coming towards her from the dance floor. It was funny to her how the girl would go out of her way to make sure she was okay.
"Why the long face, Katie?" Jill questioned, leaning up against the bar as well and shooting a side glance at her friend.
Kate shrugged her shoulders and turned towards the bar to lift her drink up from the counter top. She brought the glass to her lips and easily finished it off. "I'm fine." She said flatly, placing the now empty glass back onto the bar.
Jill bumped her shoulder with her own. "Come on, don't give me that bullshit. You should be the happiest bitch in here right now so why do you look like someone ran over your dog?"
Kate snorted and waved for the bartender. "I don't have a dog." She forced a smile at the bartender as he pulled the empty glass away from her and went to make her another drink.
"Not the point, smart ass. I thought Kelly gave you the thumbs up on moving in so why aren't you happy damn it?"
"I'm happy." She said in protest, gladly accepting the new drink the bartender set in front of her.
Jill shook her head. "No, that is not the look of happy."
"Jill..." Kate warned.
"Katherine."
Kate let out a groan. "Ugh, can we just drop this." She pleaded.
"I was under the impression that there wasn't anything to drop."
Kate sighed and rolled her eyes. "I'm fine, okay. I am happy that she agreed to move in I just wish it was actually what she wanted."
"How do you know it's not what she wants, she said yes didn't she?"
"Yeah, she said yes but you should have seen her when she said it. I could practically see her head spinning and there was like this look of pure panic in her eyes."
"I don't think she would have said yes if she didn't mean it, Kate."
"I'm not so sure about that. I think she may have agreed just to make me happy, I mean how much longer are we even going to be in Nashville right? She totally only agreed because she sees it as temporary, not long term. The second she and Carrie finish the song they're working on she's gonna head back to Texas."
Jill made a sound beside her. "That's what this is really about." She accused.
Kate lifted her glass to her lips and took a generous sip. She waited for the smooth liquid to run down her throat before she responded. "What are you talking about?”
"This isn't about Kelly moving in...not as much as it is about Carrie and you being threatened by her."
Kate scoffed. "I am not threatened by that country bumpkin." She said indignantly.
"Right," Jill replied, deciding to play along, "and you shouldn't be. First of all, because Kelly loves you...she's with you...and second, she's not crushing on Carrie Underwood and third...it's all just ridiculous, Kate."
"What's ridiculous?" Both girls turned their attention towards the short Texan.
"How Kate isn't out there dancing with me right now! You love this song." Jill said, quickly thinking on the spot.
Kate forced a smile through tight lips. "I was waiting for you."
Kelly returned the smile, completely oblivious to Kate’s current unhappiness. "You didn't have to wait for me. You can go on out there with Jill. I'm gonna grab a drink and my post my butt on a stool for a minute; I'll meet you guys out there in a bit though, okay?" She said, leaning in towards the other girl and giving her a quick kiss on the lips.
"Alright, we'll see you out there." Kate replied, returning the kiss before walking off to the dance floor with Jill. Kelly waited until Jill and Kate disappeared in the crowd before finally hoisting herself up onto a bar stool and flagging down the bartender.
She had barely taken a sip of her drink before she heard her name being said from behind. Slowly setting her glass onto the bar top she turned towards the voice.
The lack of lighting in the bar made it difficult for her to make out the owner of the voice. “Carrie?” Carrie Underwood was in a gay bar right now.
She watched a wave of relief wash over the other girls face. “Oh good, it is you. I was going to feel totally stupid if it wasn’t you.” Carrie laughed nervously, “I thought I saw you coming out of the bathroom but I wasn’t one hundred percent sure, with the hat and all.” She continued, motioning towards the gray fedora on the shorter girls head.
Kelly’s eyes shifted up towards her head and she laughed. “Yep, it’s me. This is me being incognito.” She said, giving the edge of her hat a firm tug.
Carrie motioned towards the empty stool next to Kelly. “Mind if I sit?”
“Oh no, go ahead.” She insisted, pulling her drink closer to her so that it wasn’t taking up any of the Country singers counter space as she slid onto the stool beside her.
“So…” Carrie trailed off and Kelly wondered who would be the first to ask the question they both surely wanted an answer to. She decided she’d take the initiative.
A smile danced across her lips as she thought of a more clever way to ask the lingering question. “I take it this would be one of those ‘things’ I don’t know about you and you don’t know about me.”
Carrie shot her a smirk in return. “Very clever miss ‘you have no idea.’”
They shared a laugh. “Actually, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t already know you were gay,” She admitted, “My senses having been buzzing about you since your days on idol.”
Kelly cracked a wider smile as a loud laugh ripped from her chest. “God, yeah, it is kind of obvious I guess.”
Carrie nodded. “Yeah, you’re the worst liar. I mean, you say enough to make the press want to believe you’re straight but they still have their doubts.”
“Hence the constant questioning of my sexuality.” Kelly chimed in.
“Exactly, you either need to just come out already or go back to dating men,” She nudged her with her knee, “unless you haven't completely ruled them out.”
Kelly let out a snort. “Oh no, believe me honey that ship has sailed. What about you, I would’ve never pegged you as a lesbian. Okay well, maybe there were some moments but—”
Carrie let out a deep sigh. “Thaaat is the million dollar question.”
Kelly’s eyebrows furrowed together. “Oh, that’s right; you’re with Mike what’s his face. He’s attractiveish…for a guy.” She said with a laugh.
“Actually, Mike and I broke up; it wasn’t really working out, probably because I’d rather snuggle up beside someone more like myself rather than a boy who could potentially lose all his teeth. The truth is I'm not really looking for commitment right now anyways, I mean, unless the right person comes along that could totally change.”
Kelly nodded. "I get that. It’s really hard to maintain a relationship, especially in our line of work. I think that's maybe why Kate and I are working out so well because we're constantly together with work and everything. I don't think I'll ever learn my lesson on dating musicians though." She shrugged before taking a sip of her drink.
“Kate?” Carrie asked curiously.
Kelly swallowed the contents in her mouth before nodding and setting her glass back down. “Right, sorry, I just kind of tossed that out there. Kate is one of my backup singers, she and her best friend Jill. They’re actually here with me…” She explained, turning around on the stool so that she was facing the dance floor. “…somewhere out there.”
“So you and Kate…”
Kelly nodded. “Yeah, she’s…we’re dating.”
“I see. She’s the friend from lunch earlier?”
Kelly smiled and chuckled. “Yeah, I almost let the cat out of the bag earlier today with that one. I mean, I figured I’d probably tell you eventually or something, so I’m glad it kind of happened this way. You do indeed learn something new every day, that’s for sure.” She nudged Carrie with her knee.
Carrie offered a smile in return. “Indeed you do. And I haven’t dated a musician yet.” She pointed out, swiftly shifting the topic off of Kelly and Kate.
“But you've dated a buttload of athletes.”
“Hey now, two," She said holding up her fingers for emphasis, "I've dated two athletes."
Kelly held her hands up in defense. "Hahaha okay, I stand corrected. Not a buttload, just two." The two shared a short laugh.
“Hey, would you and the girls maybe wanna grab a bite to eat or something after this?”
Kelly carefully hopped down from her stool. “Sure, that sounds like it’d be cool.” She answered, gazing out at the dance floor. She didn’t see Jill or Kate. “Hmm, let me see if I can reach Jill on her phone in here…I don’t see them out there.”
She dug into her front pocket for her phone and quickly fingered through her contact list until she came across Jill’s name. Tapping the call now option she held her phone up to her ear and waited for Jill to pick up.
“Hey, where are….wait what, when did you guys leave?” Carrie watched the Texan’s face wrinkle in confusion.
Kelly sighed deeply into the phone. “I’ll be home in a little bit.” She spoke softly before ending the call.
She slid her phone into her back pocket and looked over at Carrie. “I’m really sorry but I’m going to have to ask for another rain check.”
Carrie nodded and hopped down from her stool as well. “Hey, totally no problem, is everything okay?”
Kelly shrugged. “I don’t know, but I should get going and find out what the hell is up. I can’t believe they just left me here.” She muttered.
“I can give you a ride back to your place if you’d like.” Carrie offered.
“Would you? That’d be great.”
“Absolutely, let me just go tell my friends I’m bouncing and then we can head out.”
“Sounds good, thanks Care.”
