“Get to know the person sitting next to you because you’ll be spending a lot of time with them.”
That had been easier said than done. Her partner hadn’t muttered a word to her. Well, not more than the quiet response she had gotten from her when she’d asked if the seat was taken. Although she knew next to nothing about the girl beside her she had gathered enough to realize that she was receiving the cold shoulder from her. She just couldn’t figure out why. Forcing herself to focus on what the teacher was going on about now Carrie kept her eyes forward and tried her hardest to clear her mind.
“I’m going to give you guys about ten to fifteen minutes to get to know some things about your partners to kind of break the ice so to speak, and then I’ll assign books to each of you and hand out the class syllabus.”
She blinked a few times as she watched the teacher turn his back to the classroom before she lowered her eyes nervously to the table and began tapping her pen lightly against its black surface. Somehow she had managed to tune out the chattering going on between the other students in the room and just sat there. She simply sat there, lost in her own little world of silence. Sitting and tapping her pen against the desk.
“Can you stop the tapping, please?” The voice was almost distant but it slowly and effectively pulled her out of her momentary dream state. And the hand, she couldn’t mistake the feel of the soft hand pressed lightly against her own now holding her pen in place.
Clearing her throat she drew her hand from under the other girls and shifted on the stool. “Sure, I’m sorry.”
Not once, she had noticed, had the girl bothered to look at her through their short exchange of words. Sure she had only had a brief run in with her a few days prior to this moment but she seemed far off from the girl she had met then. Carefully Carrie leaned in towards the brunette at her side and opened her mouth to speak.
“Did I…did I do something wrong?” She asked curiously, feeling quite foolish and unsure of herself. Two things she was not used to feeling often.
Finally, for the first time that day it seemed, Kelly turned and looked at her. The looks she had given her earlier had been brief and almost hesitant and it hadn’t been until now that she’d even realized the girl’s coldness towards her. For an instant, as hazel met hazel, she could have sworn she felt a chill run down her spine.
Kelly kept her eyes locked intently on the blondes next to her, unblinking. “No,” she spoke thinly, “but if you keep talking to me and are seen talking to me I’m sure the others might think you’re doing something wrong.”
Carrie blinked as her face wrinkled in confusion. “I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying…”
“Of course you don’t.” Kelly sighed, returning her attention towards the front of the room again.
“I thought…you seemed so…”
Kelly kept her eyes forward. “So what, friendly…more outgoing…maybe even, I don’t know, straight.”
“So the things people told me are true then?” She questioned, quickly fumbling to correct herself, “Not that it matters…I don’t care if—“
Kelly scoffed beside her and titled her head to look at her again. “Right, sure you don’t.” She said with an eye roll. “I can see they’ve already sunk their claws into you, it’s only a matter of time before Schuyler has you prancing around in a cheer uniform like her and her little minions." She paused and continued to stare before she opened her mouth to speak again. "A word of advice, I’d watch my back around her if I were you.” She finished, facing forward again.
Once again there was a lingering silence between the two of them. Carrie lifted her pen up slightly from the desk and absentmindedly tapped it back down against the hard surface. She caught herself the second time around and refrained from repeating the action. Finally she simply placed the pen flat against the desk and shoved her unopened notebook further away from her.
I know this will be pushing it, but I'm going to ask anyways.
“So, I know this isn’t really any of my business or anything but why do Schuyler and her friends seem to—“
“Despise me?” Kelly cut in, shooting her a side glance. “You mean aside from the obvious fact that I’m gay? That’s something you’ll have to ask them. And you’re right,” She began, setting her attention back on the teacher in the front of the room, “It’s none of your business.”
The remainder of the period drug along slowly and to know ones surprise she and Kelly didn't learn anything about one another.
Well this should make for an interesting year.
Before she had time to fully comprehend it the bell was ringing and Kelly was hopping off her stool and fleeing for the door. It wasn't until she had pushed up from her stool that she realized Kelly had left behind her notebook. Curiously she leaned forward and tried to make out the words scribbled across the page in tiny print.
Off limits.
She felt a small grin form on her lips before closing the notebook and lifting it from the table, silently laughing to herself as she exited the classroom, remembering what she had written about the brunette in her own notebook.
