When Night Falls(Pt10)
Tires squealed on the slick pavement as the car came to a sideways stop, the rear end slamming into the concrete support for the roof. The driver’s side door opened with such force, it broke the hinges and banged against the fender. In a blur the occupant was throwing open the garage door and flying up the few flights of stairs to the lobby of the de Brabant Foundation Building.
Sav slide to a halt on the polished marble floor. Glancing around the lobby, he saw the men in uniforms, standing around doing nothing. He spied the elevator with a few uniformed guards standing in front of it…’Well can’t fly up the elevator shaft now.’…then the stairwell. Sav quickly headed that way before someone saw him. His hand was on the door knob when a voice rang out.
“Hey you! Where do you think your going?”
Several policemen started toward him.
“I was going upstairs, to the 28th floor.” Sav calmly replied.
“I’m sorry sir, but we can’t let you do that. If you’ll come with me.”
“Be sorry all you want…I’m going.” Sav reached for the knob.
“Sir we cannot allow you to go up there.”
“Unlike you and your colleages, I’m not afraid to go up.” Sav swung the door open.
“Stay where you are sir!”
Glancing over his shoulder at the officer and the gun in his hand. “Why don’t you point that gun at them and not me?” Sav indicated upward and in a blur he was gone.
It took the officer’s a few seconds to realize that he wasn’t there and rushed the door to give chase.

Crystal slid the door open and quickly closed it as she came in from her day lazing by the pool. The tension in the room hit her before the loud volume of the TV. She noticed Nick pacing the floor behind the sofa, with a cell phone in one hand and another pressed to his ear. She glanced at Joe, who was tittering on the edge of the sofa. His elbows were planted on his knees and his hands covering his face.
Crystal went over and picked up the remote from the table and turned TV down.
Joe snatched the remote from her, “What are you doing?”
“It’s too loud, I was just turning it down a little.”
”If I wanted it lowered, I would have done it.” Joe glared at her.
Crystal was taken back by the stark fear that shinned brightly in his eyes, she even heard it in his voice. Easing in the seat next to him, she gentle laid her hand on his arm. “What’s happened?”
“Some men went into the Foundation Building with guns a while ago an…and…” Joe pointed to the TV. “…most every one came out, but…”
“Thomas.”
Joe shook his head.
“Can you feel him?”
Nodding his answer, Joe glued his eyes back on the TV.
Taking his hand tightly in hers, “He’s going to be alright Joe.” she glanced behind them to Nick.
“I’ve called Phil. He’s on the way to the airport. Rick is on his way, should be here soon. I couldn’t get through to Kyle, he’s in court, so I left an urgent message. I can’t get anyone on the line in New York….inside the building. Every employee has a mobile. I’m going to start on those calls. And I still can’t get through to Sav.”
Turning his gaze away from the chaotic images on the screen, he briefly held Nick’s gaze, “Why is he blocking us?”
“I’m not sure Joe. You should put all your concentration on Thomas and not worry too much about Sav. He can take care of himself.”
Joe was about to protest, but he knew that Nick was right.
“What do you mean, he can take care of himself?” Crystal looked between the two men.
“We think or believe that he is inside the building.” Nick informed her.
“Well, Sav is a vampire, they can’t hurt him.”
”There have been reports of a bomb on the 28th floor.”
“Can that hurt him?”
“Only if he is hold…”
The blaring of the phone cut Nick off. Joe bolted to his feet and flew across the back of the sofa in a blur, to snatched it from table.
“Thomas.” he nearly shouted into the phone.
“Dad.”
Joe breathed a short sigh of relief. “Where are you?” he looked at the TV to see the smoking building. Nick came over and stood beside him.
“I…I’m in my office.”
Joe squeezed his eyes shut. “Are you alright?”
“Tell him!” a deep gruff voice in the background said, then the phone banged on something, a low rustling as it was moved around.
“Thomas…Thomas are you there.”
“I…I’m here Dad.”
“Who is that and what does he want?”
“I don’t know who they are or wha….uuu…” the phone banged again.
“Stop stalling or I’m going to keep knocking you around, now pick that phone up and tell him.”
Nick heard every word the man was saying and caught Joe’s eye, felt his fear through their bond.
“Dad…” he came back on the line.
“Please Tommy do whatever they ask.”
Thomas momentarily forgot everything around him. He couldn’t stop the inner smile from the reference to ‘Tommy’, a nickname his dad used a lot when he was growing up and further still…into adulthood. “Dad cou..could you send my love to Amanda, Jacob, Jay and Rebecca Lynn.”
“You can do that yourself when this is all over.”
“Promise me that you will.”
“I’d promise you the moon Tommy.” Joe’s voice was on the verge of cracking. Knowing that who ever was standing in front of his son was hitting him, threatening him into saying everything.
“Tell him the rest.” The man shouted.
“I’m in real trouble here, Dad.” Thomas choked back his tears. “I..um…I…send my love to the rest of the family too, ok.”
“Tommy it’s alright, I’m right here. What do these guys want, I’ll give them anything.”
“Finish it!” Joe heard the man yell, and the unmistakable sound of flesh hitting flesh. “Let the others go. The elevators are locked down. They have to use the stairs.”
Men were shouting and a woman calling out to Thomas. He in turn forgets himself again, if only for a minute. Telling them it was going to be alright, just do as they are told. While in his ear, he listened to his fathers voice that caressed his soul.
Joe waited the agonizing seconds until Thomas spoke into the phone.
“Da he…um has a gun pointed at my throat.”
Joe grabbed a hold of Nick’s arm to keep himself from falling, his fingers digging to the bone. Nick was listening to everything that Thomas was telling him. Feeling Joe’s rising fear and emotions, along with his own. Nick winched from the pain and pried his fingers lose, then maneuvered Joe around, so that he was leaning against the table. The placed a reassuring his hand on Joe’s shoulder, squeezing gently.

Sav nearly collided with the small group as they came down the stairs, as he was going up. He quickly glanced over them.
“Scott.”
Scott was no stranger to who Sav was or what he is. Having worked with the company for twenty years, he knew of the vampire Community.
“M..Mr. Savage.”
“Where is Thomas?”
“In his office.” Scott quickly replied.
“How many men are there?”
“I...I don’t know, four maybe...standing guard in the hall. A few in the office with Tom, all of them all have rifles of some sort.”
“Understood. Get downstairs...police are there.” Sav spun around, calling over his should, “Carry Sarah if you have too.” He darted up the stairs, vaguely hearing Sarah yell out about the bomb.
**
“All of you have to stay in Dublin, don’t go anywhere. Somebody will be contacting you in a few days.” Thomas passed the message to Joe that he was given.
“What else?”
“That’s all it say’s.”
Joe looked at Nick. “We will wait right here.”
“And dad, don’t give up on Sav. He loves you so much.”
“I know. We will get together when this is all over.”
“Reaffirm some bonds…make them stronger.”
“Tell Daddy goodbye.” The gruff voice instructed.
Before Thomas could reply, the loud crackling of the man’s walkie talkie interrupted them. “Some one is coming…”
Through the slight crackling of the speaker, came a deep, angered voice, “Your death is coming.”
Joe snapped his eyes to Nick; both men knew without a doubt, that it was Sav. The walkie talkie went dead, but the distant sound of gun fire and yelling could be heard over the phone lines.
Squeezing his eye tightly shut Joe held his voice from going into more panic. “Tommy…Thomas are you there?”
“I…I’m here.”
“We knew he was in the city, but it’s too late, Savage can’t help you now.” The man’s deep, menacing laughter echoed over the line. “Say goodbye dad.”
Thomas choked on his words as they spilled out. “Dad, I love yo…..”
“Wait, Thomas don’t go, don’t hang….” The loud report of the gun exploded through the phone. Joe snatched it away from his ear, felt his bond with Thomas snap like a twig.
**
The unmistakable loud pop of gun fire echoed through the 28th floor. Sav’s bond with Thomas shattered, causing him to loosen his death grip on the man he held tightly around the throat. Sav flung the dead man aside and flew down the long hallway, toward more voices that were closer to Thomas’ office. Brusting through the outer offices, he was met with a berage of bullets as the heated metal whizzed past him, barely feeling the ones that grazed his side. Even the bullet that left a deep gash in his upper arm didn’t stop him from his targets. Grabbing the muzzle of on rifle, he ripped it the dark clad mans grasp, flinging aside and went for him. Sav easily tossed him aside, ripping his throat out in one swift motion. He spun around to face the others in the room, another body went flying, crashing through the large plate glass windows, where he disappeared, landing on the city street far blew. The others didn’t give Sav a chance to reach them, electing to shoot themselves instead of being ripped apart by him. Another, louder gun shot had Sav on the move again, into Thomas office.
**
Joe stared at the receiver in his hand, listening to the same deep voice calling out to him by name. Slowly putting it back to his ear, he listened for any sound from Thomas. The only sounds that filtered through was more yelling and gun fire.
“Where is my son?” Joe asked in a flat lifeless tone.
“Your son is dead Mr. Elliott. I know you’re watching the television in Dublin. Remember the message you were given.” The line went dead.
Joe dropped the phone to the floor, standing up he turned toward the television, staring numbly at the screen. The seconds ticked by, feeling like and eternity to the men watching the live feed from New York. The 28th floor of The de Brabant Foundation suddenly exploded in a ball of flames and black smoke.
