Winds of Destiny(Pt9)
Nick inserted his key onto the lock, quietly entered the foyer. Shedding the light jacket, he draped it over the chair to put away later. Listening to the quiet of the villa, he easily picked up on Crystal steady heartbeat, sensed that she was sleeping. He also detected the other two vampires, aside from Sav, still withing the stone walls. Quietly making his way to the bar to pour himself a drink, ever mindful of Ethan stretched out on the sofa.
“I though you would have left by now.”
Ethan sat up, watching him sip his drink. “We would have, but didn’t want to leave Crystal here alone to confront Richard’s bad dream.”
Nick lowered his glass, his eyes darted toward where their room was. “I didn’t realize he had one. She has been with him on previous occasions after he had bad dreams.”
“And put herself in unnecessary danger. One never knows the state of a vampires mind during such episodes.”
Nick only smirked at him as he sat his glass down and left the room. Easing into their room, he quietly padded to the bed. Looking down at the two figures laying there. Rachel cradled Sav in her arms as he lay against her side. Nick reached down to brush the curls that had fallen over his eyes. Easing into Sav’s mind, he noted how restless it was, of the dream he had earlier, the fear that remained, deeper still, his lounging to be with Joe. Turning his gaze to Rachel when he felt her gently squeeze his hand, an understanding passed between them that Sav was safe for the day with her. With a curt nod, Nick quickly changed and left.
Once he rejoined Ethan in sitting room, he grabbed the bottle, another glass. Before getting comfortable in the chair across from Ethan, Nick poured drinks for both of them.
Ethan swung his feet to the floor. “I already had a glass, but thanks.”
“He seems to be sleeping peacefully.” Nick mumbled. “For now.”
“Meaning?”
“Meaning, he hasn’t been sleeping well since leaving Dublin...correction, not since that hell Armand put him through. Of which, I do not want to discuss.”
Ethan stretched back out on the sofa. He knew if he waited Nick out, waited for him to continue the conversation he would. His patients for the man sitting across from him won out.
Nick messaged the bridge of his nose, hoping that it would work out another headache in as many days. “Why didn’t The Elders come to our aid when I asked, pleaded that help was needed?”
“We had heated discussions for several days after receiving your first request. By the time the second one came in, 8 of the 11 had already made up their minds not to give you the assistance you requested.”
“Were you one of the eight?”
“No Nicholas, I was not. I wanted to help, but the majority of the vote ruled it out, therefore I couldn’t go against that.”
“You are head of The Elders, you could have over ridden that decision and helped us Ethan.”
“I couldn’t do that. It would have shown favoritism for your group in the vampire community.”
“Don’t pass that plate full of bullshit to me. Half the community questioned your non-involvement in helping us this time. When you so readily let us go for breaking many of the Codes rules, of which are still broken. Didn't give it a second thought to help when Sav was deathly ill.”
“I really wanted to help Nick, but my hands were tied.”
“No, you didn’t want to help because it might tarnish your image of what the community perceives you as. You turned your back on us, refused to stop Armand in the beginning. Therefore, I hold you and The Elders personally responsible for everything that happened.”
Ethan shifted on the sofa to better study the man sitting across from him. “I respect your straight forwardness Nick, your friendship for the past 800 years. If we could go back and change the past, I would gladly do so, but we can’t. The Elders have learned from our decision and regret that we did not help. Changes were made so that something like this will never happen again.”
“It took the life of two innocent, dearly loved ones to make that change Ethan.” Nick furrowed his brow. “Make that three. Dylan had no idea what he was getting himself into, he believed everything that Armand told him.”
“As I recall, it was 18 that lost their lives, most of those in New York, along with countless others that were injured.”
“Yes, your right.” Nick slide down in the chair, closing his eyes.
Ethan asked after a long silence. “Is some one following him?”
“No.” Nick replied softly.
“Then what made him behave like that tonight?”
“I told you that already.”
“Not all of it. Crystal filled us in with what you didn’t tell us. It doesn’t sound like you believe him.”
“I know Rick better than you do.”
“That may be so. You weren’t there to see him, to see the terror or the paleness on his face. I feared he would crush Rachel in his arms.”
“I didn’t have to be there to see it, I felt him, same as the other times this has happened since we left Dublin.” Nick added softly.
“How many times?”
“5 or 6 times, I think. The one from tonight wasn’t as bad as the others. He didn’t hurt himself this time.”
“Hurt him self. What do you mean?”
“He had an episode last week in Marseilles, he fell in the shower, broke his arm and banged his head on the wall. Crystal and I weren’t there when it happened. We had all chosen to go rock climbing that night. I mentioned the cave we needed to spend the day in and Rick backed out, went straight back the resort.”
“Crystal told us some of what happened to him in the cave with Armand. But the mere mention of it wouldn’t cause him to…”
“He was in that dark abyss for weeks, beaten, bloody, hanging from ropes. He told me Armand played mind games, threatened to take Joe and Kyle, kill them in that cave, so he could watch their bodies rot. Armand caused the accident that took Rebecca’s life, taunted him with that. So you might have a little more understanding of why the mention of cave, what it could trigger in his mind.”
Ethan glanced down at his hands, finally getting an understanding of what caused Sav’s terror from earlier. “Mrs. Elliott had an accident, nothing more, just an accident. Do you have proof that Armand caused it?”
“No.” Nick said softly. “I’m only relaying what Sav told me, what little bit he could remember. Honestly, I’m not sure I believe what Armand told him about the accident, he threatened many things, but didn’t carry through with them.”
Ethan let the silence stretch taking note of the lines etched between Nick’s brows, ones that have never been there before. He turned the conversation back to Rick’s actions from earlier. “He wasn’t alone tonight, he was in a crowd of people. I ask you again. Do you believe that he is being followed?”
“No Ethan, I do not.” Nick settled deeper in the soft chair. “I don’t want to talk about it anymore. Go choose a room, go to sleep.”
Knowing he wouldn’t get anymore from Nick tonight even when he pushed. “Very well then. Good day.” Ethan rose and left him in the sitting area. Once he found an empty room, he settled back on the soft bed, laying his hand across his stomach and putting the other behind his head. He let his mind wonder around the villa, feeling for the others. Crystal was just settling down herself after the night events. Rachel was still awake, but feeling content, even with the restless man beside her.
‘It is impossible for you stay with him forever.’
‘I know...’ Rachel replied solemnly. ‘.. but, it is hard to let him go again. Even if I could stay with him, Rick’s heart belongs to another.’
‘Yes it does and no matter how hard you try, you cannot change that.’
‘No one can change that, even now, I can feel his longing to be with the one he loves.’
‘So do I.’ Ethan stared at the ceiling, wondering if Nick could feel Sav’s depression about not being with Joe. ‘Will you tell him?’
A long pause in Rachel’s thoughts made him think she wasn’t going to answer. ‘He doesn’t need anymore complication right now Rachel. Think of Rick’s well being and not your own.’
‘Perhaps in the future I will.’
‘Until then, it will remain our secret. Agreed?’
‘Agreed.’
Ethan left her mind to continue his searching, out beyond the confines of the villa. He knew where The Elders were through out the city, other vampires that roomed Nice finding places to sleep the day away, to the mortals that staggered home from a long night of festivities. In all of that, not far away, he felt his presence, but didn’t understand why he was hiding or why no one else had picked up that he was here.

Rachel hadn’t realized she had drifted to sleep, didn’t know how long she had been. Her eyes fluttered open to see the light filtering through the tinted window. Pulling her mind more into focus when she felt the soft breath on her neck, nimble fingers easily undoing the buttons on the shirt. Pulling in a soft sigh, when the light touch of a hand on her breast. Rachel turned and scooted to be on her back, meeting Sav’s gold flaked eyes.
“Hi.” Rachel smile. “How do you feel?”
Sav popped the last button on the shirt, pushing the material aside. His fingers lightly trailed over her stomach before going to the her full breast to lightly knead one. Dipping his head down to swirl his tongue over the taunt nipple.
“How do you think I feel?” He replied pressing his hips against her thigh.
Rachel knew she should stop him, was about to push him away when his hand landed between her thighs. Her hips thrust upward, his finger slid inside...out...in...out...
“Rick…”
“mmm” Came his muffled reply against her neck. Shifting his body above her, pushing her legs further apart.
“We can’t do this.” Rachel knew her body would betray her, it always did with him. That sexual desire, the need to feel him inside her rushed to the surface.
Sav slowly slid his hardness into the her. “Why can’t we?” Waiting mere seconds before he started gently moving inside her. He didn’t give her a chance to reply, crushing her mouth with his, darting his tongue to duel with hers. Grabbing the pillow under her head, he tossed it aside, then hooked his arm behind her knee, Sav picked up the pace, pulling a startled gasp of pleasure from Rachel as he went to deep.
Her hand landed on his butt, digging fingers into the rippling muscles causing him stop. A slow grinding motion replaced the hard thrust. Rachel grip his hair, pulling him away from her neck, kissing him hard as her body spiraled to fast to her climax. Ripping her mouth from his, she sank her fangs into his throat.
Sav groaned as he felt her pulsing around him, the pull of his blood, propelled him to gently sink his fangs into her shoulder.
“Well, that was unexpected.” Sav mumbled moments later as he kissed her.
Rachel smiled. “Maybe just a little to fast.”
Brushing her dark hair back, Sav trailed his lips across the soft flesh of her throat. “We can have another go.”
“mmm...me too, but...I have to go.”
Sav looked down at her kiss swollen lips. “Spend the week with me.”
Rachel held his eyes briefly before looking away. “We...can’t.”
“I didn’t mean we, just you. Explore the city, explore each other...again.”
Taking a deep breath, Rachel fought her desire for the man that was slowly kissing, softly biting his way down her body. “I can’t.”
“Why not?”
“We are here with others, it would be wrong for us to…”
“I don’t care what Nick will think.”
“I’m here with Ethan.”
Sav stopped his decent to study her a moment. “Are you with him?”
She understood the meaning within his words. “We are just friends Rick, have been for many centuries.” Reeling in her desire, Rachel nudge his body off with her leg, then she rolled from the bed. Turning around to see his lean, nude body, the slight inviting smile beckoning to her. ‘No.’ Her mind screamed. Snatching up her costume, she began to dress.
Sav pulled the sheet up to cover his middle, just barely, hand behind his head, drawing his knee up as he watched her dress. “So…why don’t you tell me the real reason we can’t spend the week together?”
“I…I do, but…”
“Then get back in bed?” Sav smiled as he propped himself up on his outstretched arm.
Rachel’s eyes wondered to his chest, to the light blue sheet that was barely covering him. She tore her gazed from him again, spinning around to grab her shoes from the floor. “I can’t.”
She felt him move closer, sucking in her breath when his cool fingers lightly grazed her shoulders, nearly lost her resolve as his breathless whisper brushed her ear.
“What is the real reason Rachel?”
“I can’t tell you.”
Nibbling on her ear a moment, he went lower to her neck, nipping at the soft skin with his lips. “Yes you can.” Sliding his arm around her waist, Sav pulled her back against him.
Wetting her dry lips, she leaned her head back on his shoulder. “Don’t do this Richard.”
“Do what?” Sav gently tugged on the front of the costume, freeing her breast that his hands ached to touch again. “Want you the way I do.”
It took everything she could pull forth to still his hand and pull away from him. Taking a deep breath, Rachel gathered herself to turn around to face him. She could see the desire for her in his gold flaked blue eyes and tried not to get lost in them. “You want a reason? It is not fair to me, because it will only lead me to love you more.”
“You love me.” Sav smiled down at her. “I already knew that.”
“You did?”
“Yes Rachel. When I was sick, you kept visiting me in The Underground, that’s when I figured it out.”
"You knew and didn’t say anything.”
“No.” Sav reached for the silky material to pulled it back up to cover her.
“Why not?”
“Turn around.” Sav whispered.
To shocked that he knew all along that she loved him, thoughts of him standing nude before her flew from her mind as she turned around.
“To protect you.” Sav trailed his finger over the smooth skin as he pulled the zipper upward.
“Protect me from what?”
“Not a what, but a who.” Sav replied, leaning forward to kiss the back of her neck. “Nick.”
“I don’t need protecting from Nick.” Rachel huffed and spun around. “He dare not harm one of The Elders, which I am.”
“He doesn’t care who you are, as long as you don’t stand in his way. Don’t forget, he thinks I’m his territory.”
“That’s absurd! You are not his territory Richard.”
“Try telling him that.” Sav told her as he caressed her cheek. “It would be in your best interest to stop loving me...in that way, because nothing will ever come of it, you know that.”
“Stop letting Nick run your life.”
“He doesn’t.” Sav dropped his hand and went to the dresser for some clothes.
“If he doesn’t, give it a chance, give us a chance.”
Sav snapped the button on his jeans, then slipped the white cotton shirt over his head. “I’ve done that before Rachel. Olivia killed herself, before that chance could ever get started. With Amber...well that was doomed from the first thought. So I will not take a chance with another woman...ever.”
“You’re afraid to take a chance we me then?”
“I’m afraid of what Nick will do.” Sav tucked the tails of his shirt in his jeans, then stood before her. “I love you as a friend Rachel, nothing more.”
A soft rap on the door stopped Rachel from saying anything else.
“Come in.” Sav called out.
Ethan poked his head in, his eyes immediately locked with Rachel’s. Going further into the room he stopped and turned to Sav. “How are you feeling this evening?”
“Better…and hungry.”
“That’s good to hear after the episode you went through last evening.”
Sav shrugged it off. “My mind playing tricks on me again, that’s all.”
“Are you sure of that?”
“Yes.” Sav shot back. “Anyway…would both of you join me for a drink?”
Ethan clapped his hands together and looked at Rachel. “Actually, we must be going back to our villa to change. We have a dinner to attend. Another time for that drink, perhaps before we leave at weeks end.”
“I look forward to it.” Sav replied and approached Rachel, placing his finger under her chin to raise her head a bit. He leaned down to softly kiss her. “I’m sorry it can’t be what you really want.”
“So am I.” A soft smile touched her lips. “Don’t let my declaration of love keep us apart in the future.”
“Just don’t expect me to give you more then what I’m capable of.”
Rachel cupped his cheek, on her toes, she softly kissed him. Holding his gaze a little longer, she finally turned to Ethan and said she was ready to leave.
Sav blew out a deep breath and stared at the floor, wondering if his friendship with Rachel was in someway damaged after she confessed her love for him, more then that of friends. What of the times they would meet in the future, would it be awkward between them now? He certainly hoped it didn’t and for their friendship to remain intact.
