You Can’t Control Destiny – Chapter 11
Not a cloud in the sky. The sun beat relentlessly down on the heads of anyone foolish enough to be outside during the hottest part of the day in Caserta, Italy. A heat wave had taken over this part of Italy sending temperatures soaring. After the milder climate of the Australian winter the cast and crew found the stifling weather draining. An extra day off sent them scurrying in all directions, some went shopping, some sight seeing, and some just relaxing and recharging their batteries.
“It is sweltering out here!” Chelsea whined, wiping sweat from her forehead. “Whose idea was this anyway?”
“Yours,” Natalie pointed out, fanning herself with her guidebook.
“I can’t take off any more clothing,” Stephanie, one of the crew, complained. “One more article and I’ll be arrested for indecent exposure!”
Another member of the crew, Denise, laughed. “I don’t think that’s a problem, but if one more Italian male pinches my butt I won’t be able to sit down for a week!”
Natalie laughed weakly, the sun’s heat making her light-headed. “We’d better get inside somewhere and get something cold to drink.”
“Hey, look over there!” Chelsea pointed down the street, a smile lighting her face.
Hayden stood outside a jewelry store talking on a cell phone. His head bent, the sun glanced off his blonde hair.
“He looks like a model,” Denise sighed, studying him and enjoying the view. Behind her sunglasses, Natalie took all of him in and suppressed the urge to smile. It had only been over a week since they had been alone together, but it felt like months. The tiny butterflies she always got in her stomach when she saw him fluttered to life.
“Hayden!” Stephanie called out and waved. Hayden’s head lifted and he smiled and waved, still deep in conversation. “Let’s go see him.” As they walked over Ahmed and Miles, another member of the crew, came out of the jewelry store.
Hayden made a face as he ended the call. “Let’s go,” he sighed heavily to the two guys and motioned back to the store.
“Again?” Ahmed groaned. “Man, now what?”
“What’s going on?” Chelsea barreled right in, nosy as usual.
Hayden acknowledged the girls, studiously not lingering on Natalie too long. Unzipping his backpack, he slipped a package inside. “That was my dad,” he announced with a grimace. “Now he wants me to go back in and find a ring for my mom. He wants to give it to her on their anniversary and thinks having it come from Italy will be romantic.” Hayden rolled his eyes as he stuck his sunglasses on top his head. “AND…I should get something for my grandmother. It was bad enough picking out stuff in there for my sisters!”
Miles shook his head. “I feel for you,” he patted Hayden on the shoulder. “My wife won’t let me choose ANY jewelry for her anymore unlshe she is with me.”
“Come on, ladies,” Ahmed already had Natalie by the arm and pulled her towards the store. “You’re going to help us.”
“Hey!” Hayden grabbed Natalie’s other arm.
“What am I? A pretzel?” Natalie joked at the two. Hayden didn’t seem to hear her.
“That’s NOT a good idea,” he objected. Ahmed snorted impatiently. “Those goofy paparazzi are everywhere and they are always putting Natalie and me together. What do you think they are going to say if they see her in there with me shopping for a diamond ring?”
The thought halted everyone’s progress. Everyone’s but Ahmed’s. “Oh, puh-leeze!” he huffed and tugged on Natalie so hard Hayden lost his grip on her. “There are seven of us here! Four are female and all four will help us! Isn’t that right, ladies?”
“Sure!” Chelsea, Denise, and Stephanie assured, ready to go and look at all the beautiful gems.
“It’ll be all right, Hayden,” Natalie yelped as Ahmed dragged her into the store.
Hayden threw his hands in the air. “Ok, but remember when the press starts crap I was against this!
“Oh, calm down,” Chelsea chided, slipping an arm through his. “We’ll let them think it’s for me. I’m leaving in a few days and they’ll go nuts over it.”
“Gee, thanks,” Hayden dryly retorted.
Hayden shifted uncomfortably inside the shop, but the clerk who had helped him earlier was overjoyed at possibly snagging another sale. Each ring Chelsea ooh’d over gave Hayden a shudder. Denise’s choices weren’t much better. The pain on his face grew when Miles pointed out one particularly gaudy stone of six carats. Natalie laughed outright at his expression and nudged Ahmed.
“Miles!” Ahmed gagged, pretending to stick a finger down his throat. “No wonder your wife banned you from buying her jewelry! Your taste sucks!” The girls laughed. “And, Chelsea, yours isn’t much better!” Chelsea stuck her tongue out at him.
Stephanie and Natalie wandered down the counter studying the rings. Quietly, they discussed the choices. Suddenly, Natalie stopped and grabbed Stephanie’s arm. “Look at that!” she breathed in awe. “That’s it!” Stephanie leaned over to study the ring and raised her hand motioning Hayden over.
“Right there, Hayden,” Natalie pointed. “It’s absolutely beautiful in its simplicity. It’s not overly huge and look how it sparkles because of the way the facets are cut. It’s perfect!”
“Well, it is pretty,” Hayden admitted with a shrug.
“Excellent choice,” the clerk agreed in a thick, Italian accent. “It’s only two carats but definitely one of a kind.”
“I like the shape,” Hayden mused, scratching his chin.
“It’s a solitaire,” Stephanie informed, rolling her eyes at Natalie as if to say ‘men!’
“Whatever,” Hayden shrugged. “Natalie, try it on; you, too, Stephanie. I want to see what it looks like on a hand.”
“Oh, me toe toe too!” Chelsea scurried over holding her hand out. “Ooh, it’s gorgeous!” Hayden shook his head at her and laughed.
The three girls tried it on and Hayden studied it from all sides. Unsure, he looked to Ahmed for help. “What are you looking at me for?” Ahmed backed up. “I am NOT trying that on!”
“Oh, ha, ha, ha,” Hayden drawled, running long fingers through his hair. ‘I want your opinion.” Miles opened his mouth to speak and Hayden quickly pointed at him. “Not yours.”
Ahmed held Natalie’s hand turning it this way and that. “I think this is the one,” he nodded. “Your dad will have your mom in the palm of his hand for years.”
“Oh, shut up,” Stephanie shoved him. “It’s perfect.” Natalie, Denise and Chelsea agreed.
“Ok, then,” Hayden rubbed his hands together just thankful they were done. “I’ll take it. Now, I get my grandmother finished and I am not going anywhere near a jewelry store for a long time! This is nuts.” Hayden’s eyes twinkled teasingly as he slid a sideways glance at Miles. “And especially not with you!”
The cast and crew returned to Sydney on Saturday afternoon. Since they were a little ahead of schedule, work wouldn’t pick up again until Monday. Natalie lay on the couch in her apartment looking forward to going to bed early for a change, but Chelsea had other ideas.
“Come on, Nat!” Chelsea pleaded, hands on hips. “It’s my last Saturday night here. Let’s go clubbing and dance the night away!”
Natalie groaned and wearily eyed her friend. “Aren’t you worn out?”
“Nope. C’mon, one more time. Please?” When she pouted at Natalie and heard her sigh she clapped her hands. “All right! Let’s doll ourselves up and go down the beach and slay the men!”
“What men?” Natalie shook her head.
“Any men we see tonight!”
A few hours later Natalie stood checking out the crowd on the dance floor and did her best to stifle a yawn. Normally, she would have been out there, too, but jet lag was catching up to her. Stephanie nudged Natalie and motioned to Chelsea gyrating away with some Aussie.
“She’s a one woman wrecking crew!” Stephanie shouted above the music. “Plus a social director! She’s rounded up about 20 of us tonight!”
“I guess she wanted to leave Australia with a bang!” Natalie shouted back, grinning. “This place will never be the same!”
Ahmed danced up to them and grabbed Natalie’s hand. “Let’s go, Nat!” He shouted. “Time to boogie!” Before Natalie could get a word out he yanked her onto the dance floor. Going with the beat she followed the music laughing at Ahmed’s antics and attempting to match his movements.
Five dance partners later Natalie begged for a rest and wound her way back to their table. A few of the cast and crew were there talking and laughing, one kicking a chair out for her to tumble onto. Stephanie showed up a moment later with two bottles of ice water handing one to Natalie. Gratefully, Natalie twisted the cap and thirstily swallowed.
Stephanie nudged Natalie as Chelsea danced her way over. “Phew!” She called out, fanning herself with her hand. Aussie guys are so hot! Everyone having a good time?” Those at the table shouted back in the affirmative as she collapsed in a chair next to Natalie. “I bet Hayden is!”
A frission of warning coursed down Natalie’s spine. Quizzically, she looked at Chelsea. “Chelsea nodded her head in the direction by the bar. Natalie and Stephanie followed Chelsea’s command, Natalie’s stomach dropping into a deep, black pit. Shock and dismay crossed her face.
“Holy shit!” Ahmed yelped, grabbing a seat beside Stephanie. “Is that Anna Kournikova over there practically crawling onto Hayden?!” Ahmed’s mouth gaped as they watched the beautiful, scantily clad tennis player turn sultry eyes and smile to Hayden and scoot so close she really was almost in his lap. Hayden’s head tipped back as he laughed at something she said. Making sure he didn’t mistake her intent, Anna laid a hand suggestively on his thigh and laughed up at him.
Everyone at the table stared, but no one with more intensity than Natalie. The other girl wore her long blonde hair loose down her back, her tight, low cut pink top and short skirt showing off her assets. Confident of her appeal, Anna peered at Hayden through her lashes making sure he kept his focus on her. Natalie silently compared her own appearance to Anna’s. A ponytail held her brown hair off her face in the heat of the club. Her blue spaghetti strapped top and short skirt were nice looking, but her shoes were low heeled for easier movement on the dance floor and she did not own a pair of long legs. She felt dowdy compared to the curvaceous, sexy Anna and a slow, desperate angry ember began to burn in her chest. Jealousy ate a hole in her heart so large it hurt to breathe. As Hayden engrossed himself in the conversation with Anna, Natalie found she could not tear her eyes away.
“Lucky dog,” one of the guys muttered. One of the girls smacked him. “Ow!”
“Well, we know what Hayden will be doing tonight!” Another guy snickered and elbowed Ahmed.
Natalie’s eyes widened in shock and she dropped her head as a wave of nausea and dizziness washed over her. The thought of Hayden making Anna Kournikova feel what he made her feel sickened her. Surely he wouldn’t…would he? A possessiveness welled up in her and she used all her inner strength to not storm across the room and pull the sexy Russian’s hair out by its roots.
“Oh, I gotta get in on this!” Ahmed enthused, jumping up and smiling widely. “He’s gotta share her!”
Everyone laughed at Ahmed as he practically ran across the room. Hayden looked up as Ahmed called his name and grinned, slapping Ahmed’s hand in greeting. Ahmed pulled a chair up on the other side of Anna who made a moue of discontent at being interrupted.
Natalie’s head pounded ferociously. With her fingers she massaged the pain. Chelsea caught the movement from the corner of her eye and turned in concern.
“Are you all right, Nat?”
“I’ve got a terrible headache,” Natalie winced, eyes on the floor, blocking the sight from her view. “It’s getting worse. I think I’m going to leave.”
Stephanie leaned over. “We’ll take you home. We were ready to move on, anyway.” Not wanting to argue and prolong things, Natalie accepted only wanting to get out of there as fast as possible.
Hayden’s casual perusal of the room while Ahmed attempted to charm Anna fell on Natalie. As she rubbed her head and headed for the door, Hayden frowned. “Ahmed, what’s wrong with Natalie?” he asked, watching her walk out the door with Chelsea and Stephanie and a few of the crew.
“Huh?” Ahmed turned his head. He shrugged. “I don’t know.”
Hayden’s first thought was to go after her and make sure she was all right, but the chance of it being reported in the press and his promise to Natalie to keep their relationship private kept him a prisoner in the club. Did her leaving have anything to do with what was going on here? There was no doubt in his mind that she saw him.
I bet I am in so much trouble, he groaned silently as he felt the hand touch his thigh again.
Sunshine flickered through the bedroom windows waking Natalie. For a moment she blinked, eyes gritty with a lousy night’s sleep. At least the headache’s gone, she thought, twisting her head from side to side. Pushing the covers back she swung her legs over the side of the bed and stretched before walking to the window. The sun was shining but clouds moved in on the horizon to remind everyone that at least Down Under it was still winter.
With super human control, she held any other thoughts at bay and dragged herself into the living room. A key scraped in the lock and she jumped. The door slowly opened to reveal a haggard, but smiling Chelsea. Blinking owlishly Natalie stared at her friend as she stumbled through the door.
“You look awful,” Natalie stated the obvious.
Chelsea scowled. “I feel awful.” She moaned and clutched her stomach. “Too much partying and then breakfast. I a goa good time, though.” Seeing Natalie’s dry expression she scowled again. “And, no, I am not drunk. I am, however, going to bed where I will probably be most of the day. You’ll just have to entertain yourself.” As she staggered to the bedroom she added in support of her plan, “Besides, it’s Sunday and you’ll be studying with Hayden, anyway, so I’m not going to worry about you.”
Hayden. The name resounded through Natalie’s brain like a sonic boom and everything she had pushed out of her mind came rushing back at her. All the images of last night played before her, including some that might have happened later. On a choked cry she ran to the bathroom and threw up. Sitting on the floor afterward she tried to marshal her thoughts. All her emotions unhinged at the new sensation of vulnerability. She hated it. But she kept seeing the sexy Anna all over Hayden and him not doing a thing about it.
A shower will restore my good mood, she thought, viciously turning on the taps. Her nightshirt flew over her head and she stepped under the water intent on scrubbing herself until her sanity returned. Instead, a black, pitiless fury worked its way to the front of her emotions wrapping long, tight tentacles around her heart, squeezing until the jealousy oozed from it. She had never felt this kind of furious jealousy. And it was all directed at Hayden. How dare he! She attacked her hair, scrubbing it with a vengeance. He knew I was there! How dare he! A month goes by and already he’s flirting with other women? Just who does he think he is, anyway? And taking up with a tart like that! Oh! Just like a man! They think with the wrong part of their body!
“Ouch!” Natalie jerked and examined the blood trickling from a razor cut. Grabbing the washcloth she dabbed at it, blaming Hayden for it in the process. “Wait until I get a hold of you,” she threatened aloud. “You’d better be home…” She gritted her teeth, shut off the water and whipped a towel around her, “and alone.”
