Chapter 10
When we got to the club it was packed. There was barely room to breathe. But we managed to push our way through the crowd, and find a spot where we had a good view of the club. We hadn’t mentioned the bathroom incident since it happened. And maybe that was for the best, ‘cause I didn’t know what to say. I’m pretty sure Kevin didn’t either. Well, enough of that. We spend a good deal of the night just surveying the crowd without any incidents. Finally I said to Kevin,
“ Kev…nothing’s happening! How about we just relax and enjoy the music for the rest of the night?”
“ …you…you’re right! Tonight’s kinda slow…I guess we could just relax…but I still think we need to keep our eyes open…” Kevin said looking at me.
“ Don’t worry!” I smiled at him, “ Kev…you should know by now, that I always keep my eyes open!”
“ I do! I’m just saying…” Kevin started, but I cut him of,
“ Blah, blah and blah!” I looked him straight in the eye, “ Shut up, and have fun!”
Kevin was about to answer me, when someone tapped my shoulder. I turned around and it was a guy I knew from the restaurant. I had quit my job only a couple of weeks after I got the slayer gig, and moved in with Kevin, so I could concentrate fully on fighting vampires.
“ Jason!” I said giving him a hug, “ Oh my God!”
“ Hey Angel!” he said hugging me back, “ I saw you standing up here, so I thought I’d ask you if you wanted to dance!”
“ Sure!” I said, “absolutely!”
I took his hand and he led me to the dance-floor. We started grinding to the music, while we tried to catch up on old times. It was kind of difficult having a conversation when the music was so loud. We managed though. Of course I didn’t tell him I was the slayer, I just made up some story, that I had gotten another job as a secretary. As a slow song came on, and we started swaying to the music something or someone caught my eye. Nick. Nick was there. What the hell was he doing there? I don’t know why, but I suddenly felt compelled to go over and talk to him. I excused my self and started making my way over to the corner he was standing in. Other vampires surrounded him, but at soon as I came near them, they started moving away. My guess is that Nick knew I was there and he had told them that if I came over, they should leave. Soon I was standing face to face with my nemesis. I just stared at him for a while. And he just stared right back, with a smile on his face that indicated that he found the situation amusing. I found myself getting increasingly angry with him, the longer we kept the staring contest going. Since I wasn’t exactly famous for my patience, I soon decided I had to say something.
“ You have some nerve showing up here!” I said through clenched teeth.
He just smiled even wider, an’tan’t a man go to a club and enjoy some music without being harassed by some psycho-chick with a death wish?”
I smiled at him,
“ A man yes, a vampire no!” I told him, “And I don’t have a death-wish…In fact, that’s not really true, I do have a death wish, I wish you dead!”
Okay, I knew that sounded really stupid, but he had me so mad I couldn’t even think straight, but the message seemed to get through to him. His smile disappeared and he grabbed his jacked, which was hanging of the back of a chair behind him. He turned around to look at me one last time, and then he left. He just left, wut sut saying a damn word to me. Why that made me angry I didn’t know. I mean, he left, and that was what I wanted him to do, so why was I pissed because he just left without saying a word to me? Why did I even care? Deciding that I wasn’t gonna let him ruin my night, I shrugged and headed back toward Kevin. He was seemingly engaged in an extremely interesting conversation with an unknown female, well she seemed interested in what she had to say, Kevin just pretended to be listening, all the while looking out to the dance floor to see if he could spot me somewhere. We made eye contact and I waved at him. He excused himself with the woman and started making his through the crowd to meet me. I met him halfway.
“ Where did you go?” he asked me, “ One minute you’re on the dance floor with Jason, and the next you’re gone.”
“ Oh…I just had to move into bouncer mode!” I told him.
“ Bouncer mode? What do you mean?” I looked confused. He was so cute when he was confused.
“ Nick was here…” I said, “I told him to leave and he did.”
“ Oh okay!” Kevin said looking a little less confused, but then he turned even more confused-looking, “ He just left?”
“ Yeah!”
“ Just like that?”
“ Yeah!”
“ No fighting, no protests…no nothing?”
“ No! Why?” I asked.
“ Well, he doesn’t seem himself!” Kevin said, “ He must be up to something, when he’s taking orders from a slayer!”
“ It couldn’t be the fact that I can be very persuasive wI’m I’m angry?” I asked pretending to be surprised.
“ As persuasive as you can be, you’re still the slayer, and Nick doesn’t take orders from slayers, or anyone else for that matter!” Kevin said.
For a long time we didn’t say anything. I guess I was processing what had just happened, when all of a sudden I got an idea.
“ Kevin?” He looked at me. “ Let’s go for a ride!”
He looked at me questioningly and then he said,
“ We can’t just leave Angel, we’re patrolling!”
“ Trust me, this is completely slayer related!” I said as I grabbed his hand a pulled him out of the club.
“ Where are we going?” Kevin asked as we reached his car.
“ We’re going to find out where Nick lives!” I said smiling.
“ And how do you suppose we’re gonna do that?” Kevin asked.
“ Simple!” I stated, “When Brian left me by the park, after I had been kidnapped, we had only been driving for about 10 minutes!” I added.
“ And?” Kevin asked, getting in to the driver’s side of the car.
“ And that means, that Nick’s place is within a ten minute radius of the park!” I said, proud that I had come up with the plan, “ I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before!”
“ Yeah…” Kevin said, still not convinced, “ But you do realize that there are plenty of buildings he could be hiding in within that radius, right?”
“Kevin, Kevin, Kevin…” I said, “How many castle-size mansions do think is within that radius?”
“ You’ve got a point!” He said. Now he was smiling too, “Let’s go!”
We drove around for a while, checking out all the mansions that could be his, but only one of them where large enough. We stopped in front of it and I just stared up at the windows for a while. The lights where on inside and I guess I was hoping to catch a glimpse of someone I knew, hereby I mean a vampire, to confirm my suspicions. Before long there was some movement on the top floor. I squinted my eyes, in an attempt to better see what was happening. I saw some shadows moving around. I couldn’t see who it was. The suddenly, a figure appeared in the window. It was Nick. So obviously my suspicions were right. He looked stressed. But why? All of a sudden he turned around. It looked like he was shouting at someone. He was fighting with someone. I didn’t want to stay there anymore, so I told Kevin to start driving again.
“ But we should see if we can figure out what Nick’s up to!” Kevin protested.
“ I know Kev, but I don’t feel to good!” I said looking at him, “Can’t we just go back here tomorrow?”
He looked at me.
“ Sure…” He said and then he started driving away.
I held my hand to my forehead in an attemptdulldull the headache that had appeared out of nowhere. It didn’t help, so I just leaned back in the seat and tried to relax. Not easy when it feel like the entire Chinese army is marching in your head. I started shifting around in the seat to try to find some way of relaxing. Kevin kept looking at me worriedly but I just told him to keep his eyes on the road. When we finally reached his place Kevin hurried around to my side of the car, to open the door for me. When I stepped he he asked,
“ Are you sure you’re okay?”
“ Yeah Kev…it’s just a headache, I just need to lie down for a while.” I told him.
He unlocked the door to his apartment and let us both inside. I hurried toward the couch where I laid down on my stomach. Kevin came in a few minutes later, after having told the gang what was going on, with a cup of warm tea in his hands. He handed it to me and I accepted it gladly. I took a zip and noticed that Kevin was still looking at me.
“ What?” I asked.
“ No wonder you have a headache!” He said.
“ What do you mean?” I was curious. Headache or no headache, my curiosity would never be cured.
“ Look at you!” he said gesturing toward me. I looked down at myself, trying to figure out what he was talking about. “ You’re way too tense!” he said, answering the question I was about to ask.
“ Yeah…” I said smiling at him, “Occupational hazard! It comes with the job!”
“ Well, you need to relax!” He said.
“ Duh! Easier said than done!” Id. Hd. He nodded understandingly and then he said,
“ Maybe I can help! Lay down on you stomach again!”
I looked up at him, one eyebrow raised, and then I did as he asked.
Nick was in his office, when Brian came up. Brian looked like he was pissed, and he couldn’t blame him. Nick had promised he would take care of the slayer, the nest time he saw her and what had he done? He had run out of the club like a scared little boy. Why? He didn’t know. He just hadn’t felt like fighting the slayer. That was all there was to it. At least he thought that was all there was to it. Brian was staring at him now. He looked like he was about to explode.
“ Christ Nick!” He shouted. The house was empty, so he could shout at Nick without anyone else hearing it. “ What the hell happened? I thought you were gonna take care of her!”
Nick looked at Brian, tryin loo look like he had everything under control,
“ Yeah! I did, but I couldn’t really start fighting her in the club!” Nick shouted back.
“ And why not?” Brian asked.
“ Because, the place was packed, and if I had started fighting her we really wouldn’t be a secret in this town anymore, now would we?” Nick asked.
“ No…but you could have taken her outside, away from the crowd!” Brian said.
“ Yeah…like people wouldn’t notice some being dragged out kicking and screaming!” Nick retorted.
“ But…” Brian was cut of.
“ You know what? I don’t wanna talk about it anymore!” Nick said, staring Brian dead in the eye, “I call the shots and I say when we kill the slayer!”
Brian shook his head. Something was going on. He just didn’t know what.
“ Fine!” he said finally. Then he turned around leaving the room, but not before slamming the door so hard it almost broke.
Nick sighed. He hated fighting with Brian, but what was he supposed to do. He couldn’t tell him what was really going on, when he didn’t even know himself. He sighed again and decided to go to sleep early. He hadn’t gotten any sleep the night before, so he needed it.
Kevin moved over to the couch and sat on his knees on the floor next to it. He then pushed my hair away from my back, and slowly started massaging it. It felt so good I couldn’t help the moan that escaped my lips. I could tell Kevin smiled. He was pleased that he had that effect on me. I couldn’t help but ask him if he had done that before.
“ Before I became a watcher I was a massage-therapist!” he told me.
“ I can tell…” I groaned as he hit a soar spot.
He kept massaging me and I soon felt my self relax. When he finished he asked,
“ Better?”
I opened my eyes and looked at him. I had nearly drifted of.
“ Much! China’s army has left my head!” I smiled at him.
He laughed and said,
“ Good…they probably had somewhere better to be!”
“ Yeah…probably…” I said as I started to drift again. I couldn’t remember the last time I had felt so relaxed. From then on, I decided that I loved Kevin’s hands.
You might think that something happened between Kevin and I that night. But nothing did. When he finished massaging my back, my headache had disappeared, and I was relaxed enough to get a good nights sleep, something I had been missing lately. Kevin retreated to his own bedroom, and we didn’t see each other until the morning after.
