Daniel didn’t think much when he opened the door that morning. The doorbell rang. Darren was in the shower. He just walked over to the door and opened it.
“And I thought you agreed to be sensible now, huh?” Elena more commented than asked.
“Come in, yeah,” Daniel commented after she already made her way past him and inside the living room.
He slammed the door not really mad but just little annoyed.
He was too tired to feel much. He had hardly slept the night before.
“Have you been crying, Daniel?” she asked, eyeing him suspiciously.
He had been. He also had been holding Darren all night.
“No!” he replied coldly. He kept repeating to himself that he did not have anything against this woman personally. It’s just her job.
“Well listen … I thought we had an agreement and you opening his front door is not in it” she looked questioningly at Daniel’s growing frown.
“What?” he asked rather rudely.
“What what? Don’t tell me!!!” she rolled her eyes, “he didn’t even tell you?”
“What?” Daniel tried to soften his voice. He knew what she is going to say, didn’t he?
“Well I told him what the deal was – you tone it down after all, and you stop acting like you’re married and you don’t live together. He wholeheartedly agreed! ”
“And the deal is…?” Daniel inquired.
“What do you mean?”
“If there’s the deal, we get something out of it, too!”
“Daniel, my dear, no one needs a gay band now. No one wants a gay band here. You are either just a band or you’ll be dropped by the record company tomorrow”
Daniel frowned. Was it a surprise? Was it a shock? Except tDarrDarren lied to him – of course not!
“I just ….,” he even surprised himself how calm he was, “I just don’t get it, Elena! That you talked to him and not me! Darren is the one who has troubles with this and you knew it! He’s the one who’s been putting his foot down on it!”
“Yes,” she looked coldly at Daniel, “But it’s HIS ambitions that can take this band to the top, and not YOURS! And we all know it.”
Daniel lowered his head and studied the light grey carpeting of Darren’s living room.
“I just told him we don’t need an openly gay band,” she continued.
“And what did he say?” Daniel raised his head to look at her.
Eyes of ice, he thought. Now she’s gonna break your heart, something in the back of his mind whispered to him. And right it was.
“He said he’s not gay,” She answered, suddenly looking rather worried at the effect her words had on Daniel, “Listen, Danny… I am not here to kill your relationship or to end the band, I just want to make sure we all know where we stand before we get too deep in trouble and better sort it all out now and not in the middle of a tour or something!”
Daniel didn’t know what to say or where to look or what to do, but some heartless logic in him was actually ready to agree with her.
“Oh and this is why I stopped by, originally, the artwork of your new single!”
“What is it, Danny?” Darren had walked into the living room and found Daniel lifelessly sitting in an armchair, hands behind his head, looking up at the ceiling.
“The artwork of the new single, have a look, it’s over there on the table,” Daniel said, matching the tone of his voice with his lifeless posture.
Darren hesitated for a second, then walked over to Daniel and kneeled down by the chair.
“I am sorry about last night, I know it wasn’t meant to be that way…,” he tried to hug Daniel but was met with cold resistance.
“I wouldn’t worry about it, if I was you, Darren. You feel how you feel, not much use in fighting that,” Daniel got up and walked to the kitchen. Then stopped half way. Of course Darren wouldn’t have any beer in his fridge.
He turned back to Darren who was still there, by the chair, on his knees, looking questioningly at Daniel.
Daniel returned to the chair and regained their previous position.
Darren reached for his hand and Daniel had a flashback of how he felt when Darren had refused his hand in the past.
Daniel took Darren’s hand and looked down at him, feeling helpless again.
“There is not much drama in me, Darren. I don’t make scenes or anything. I just want to understand why. Rea Realization was downing on Darren.
“Are we talking about the band now?” he asked quietly.
“No, Darren, we are not, and that’s the trouble!” Daniel answered. Looking into those eyes hurt him. He let go of Darren’s hand and got up.
“I need to go home,” he said and before Darren was able to react, Daniel was already gone.
“What am I doing?” Daniel thought to himself. Looking over his shoulder. Walking away. Thinking…. No, hoping … Hoping Darren will go after him, call him back, talk to him, finally tell him everything he really feels…
But Darren didn’t.
”Just go home, Jones! Go home!”
He was over the initial shock and nothing seemed as bad as it did in the morning.
He couldn’t help loving Darren. He cou couldn’t help the way his life was turning.
Bloody addict, Jones, you are an addict, he thought to himself.
He realised all too well Darren had some power over him that controls him. His baby will get away with a murder. He IS getting away with a murder.
Daniel picked up the phone and dialled Darren’s number.
“Please come over, baby….”
