The junkyard incident left its mark on Ryan. After three days his throat still ached, he could still feel Bam, could still taste him, still became hard from the memory. No matter how much he tried, he couldn’t forget how good it had been to have Bam beg for him, to have him whimper and gasp and moan. To know that he alone could get Bam that fucking hot, with just his mouth, gave him such a rush.
The whole thing had been the single most erotic experience of his life, one he ached to repeat, despite the hollow, empty feeling it had left him with. Hollow because for Bam there was no emotion involved, it was just incredible sex, and Ryan wanted so much more than that.
He tried to pretend he didn’t. Tried to pretend that it was purely physical for him too, it had worked in the past, but that was before… Before he’d realised he was in love. He tried to pretend it didn’t matter, that he didn’t need Bam’s love because he had Mark’s, that Mark was all he needed and while it was true that he did need Mark’s love, it was also true that it wasn’t enough.
He gave up pretending after a while, at least to himself, throwing himself into his relationship with Mark, reasoning that Mark didn’t deserve to be as miserable as he himself was. Mark didn’t deserve to know that Ryan’s feelings for him were a sham.
The night Dico called to say they were making a start on episode two, Ryan took Mark out for pizza and a movie. They shared their food, finger feeding one another dollops of cheese and pieces of pepperoni. They held hands in the movie theater , leaning into one another, exchanging soft smiles and chaste kisses and walked home almost shoulder to shoulder.
When Mark invited him to stay the night, Ryan almost said no. They were filming the next day, he had to be up early. He thought also, that maybe he could use a night to himself to collect his thoughts and figure out what he was going to do about Bam, but he had something he wanted to say to Mark, something important and he had to say it tonight before he pussied out.
Standing in Mark’s kitchen doorway watching him make coffee, Ryan decided his announcement couldn’t wait.
“Uhm, can we talk for a minute?” He asked nervously, picking at an invisible thread on the hem of his t shirt.
“Oh. That sounds kinda ominous.” Mark answered, setting down the coffee pot and turning to face Ryan. “And I though we had a such a great evening.” Ryan looked up. His forehead creased by a light, confused frown. “Yeah, sure we can talk. Should I be sitting down for this?”
“No. No, here’s fine. I just… there’s something I’ve been wanting to tell you for a while and it’s kinda heavy and I’ve never been real good with words and…”
“Maybe you should just stop trying to pretty it up and just tell me.”
“Yeah. Maybe I should. Okay, here goes. Shit! Look at me I’m shaking like a fucking leaf.” He laughed uneasily before continuing. “Well, I… You know this whole gay thing is still pretty new to me. It’s pretty scary finding out that you’re not what you thought you were.”
“I can imagine.” Mark said softly. He’d known he was gay since before he knew there was a name for it.
“And you know my family didn’t take the news too well.” Mark wondered briefly if Ryan was counting Bam in that.
“I know. I’m sorry, I wish there was something I could do to make it okay for you.”
“You have. That’s what I want to say.” He paused momentarily, unsure of how to continue. “Fuck. I really wish I was better with words. What I’m trying to say is, when I’m with you I don’t feel like such a fuck up. You make me feel good about myself, like I’m worth something. You make me feel…” He wasn’t sure if he should dare say the word for fear of embarrassing the both of them. Mark obviously had some deep feelings for him and Ryan felt loved but Mark had never actually said the word. What if he was wrong? As it turned out though, he needn‘t have worried.
“Loved?” Mark finished the sentence for him. Ryan nodded, blushing furiously as he did so. “That’s because you are. I love you Ry, I didn’t say anything because I was afraid it might be too soon for you, I didn’t want to scare you off but…”
“You love me?”
“I love you. Very much.” Ryan forced a smile. He should have been happy, no one had ever told him they loved him before, not even his parents. A girlfriend once but he’d always known she was lying and she’d proved it by running off with another guy and taking his car with her.
He’d waited his whole damn life to hear someone say those words to him, and mean them and now they had, he felt emptier than ever.
Mark may look like Bam, but he wasn’t him and it was Bam that Ryan longed to hear those words from. But Bam was never going to say it, Bam was never going to love him the way he wanted, Mark was. If Ryan could only forget about Bam, accept that what was happening between them was going nowhere and move on, then he had a real chance at happiness with Mark, but he couldn’t forget. Bam had bullied his way into Ryan’s heart and soul and he wasn’t going anywhere, not in the foreseeable future at any rate.
Still, Ryan hoped that in time things would change. That one day he would wake up and not want Bam anymore, that he wouldn’t long for him, that he would find the strength within him self to say I don’t need you anymore Bam. He hoped that one day he might wake up without his Bam coloured blinkers on and realise that Mark was what he’d really wanted all along. He just hoped Mark would stick around until then. He had to do something to make sure.
“I…” He began, his lie not sitting well with him, making him feel slightly sick and he hadn’t even told it yet. “I love you too.” He whispered, desperately hoping he didn’t sound as fake as he felt.
Mark smiled brightly, his happiness was evident in his eyes. He had no idea that Ryan was lying to him, something which filled Ryan with equal amounts of both relief and guilt.
“You know, I don’t feel like coffee anymore.” He said, crossing the floor to Ryan‘s doorway and leaning forward to place a gentle kiss on his lips. Ryan realised immediately where this was heading so when Mark took his hand he was ready with a forced smile of his own. “Let’s take this to bed shall we? I have a sudden urge to make long, sweet, slow love to you.”
* * *
Mark’s lovemaking that night was everything he’d promised, long and sweet and slow. There was no urgency, no rush to completion. Mark took his time, exploring every inch of Ryan’s body, worshiping it, showering delicate baby kisses upon it, licking, sucking, caressing. He moved slowly, on him and inside him, his passion building slowly to it’s peak. He was using his body to convey his emotions, to show Ryan how he felt rather than grunt cliché’s at him.
It was everything Ryan had always imagined it would be, somehow different from regular sex, better, more intense. It was close to perfect but for one thing, Bam. Bam would never give him this, he couldn’t, he wasn’t capable of that emotion. To Bam, Ryan was just another body and yet, despite that, it was Bam’s touch he craved. He found himself longing for Bam’s rough touch, harsh strokes and brutal thrusts.
His body trembled and shook beneath Mark’s, not from the pleasure, but from despair and as hard as he tried, he couldn’t keep from crying into his pillow as he came.
In the early hours of the morning Ryan made his excuses (an early shoot), told Mark once again that he loved him, and left. But he wasn’t heading to the shoot, not yet, he had other plans. Alone in his car he stared hard at his cell phone, he knew what he had to do. He dialled Bam’s number and waited patiently for Bam to pick up.
“It’s Dunn.” He said simply when at last he heard Bam’s voice. Meet me at my place in ten minutes. We need to talk.”
