Chapter Eleven: One Simple Answer
After an entire week of running around like a chicken without a head, all it seemed to take was a bullet wound to slow Karen down. She jumped down the stairs of Eve’s rather large New York apartment building overlooking Central Park. In one hand, she held a very large duffle bag filled to the brim with Eve’s clothing. The shop owner would wash them the next day and keep them at her residence for her friend’s week of bed rest. If she was going to make all this up to Eve, she was going to do it with style.
Upon catching a taxi, she found the time to breathe and prepare for the ride to the hospital. Karen had made a mistake by running away from what was going on at the hospital with Eve. She had no right to be upset about how it all turned out. Sure, if she had held out against the burglar, then maybe no one would have gotten hurt and they would have just been held hostage until the police came. But while being held at gunpoint, it is a little hard to think about what to do to save everyone. However, the situation was not one she should completely blame herself for. Eve was going to be fine, and that should have been all that really mattered to Karen.
A sigh blew against the bag she held so possessively to her body. Things were going to be hard with Eve being hurt and two men after her heart at once. But things would get better soon, and she had that much to look forward to at the time. The thoughts of bad things, however, did not flee as the taxi pulled up to the hospital and stopped. She paid the cabbie and rushed inside, bag slung over one shoulder. The nurse recognized her immediately and did not stop her from seeing her friend again.
Memory served her well as she walked down the memorized path to Eve’s room. Young children and even mothers watched as she passed in silence, the only sound coming from her was her footsteps. The bag seemed lighter as she rushed a little to get to Eve. Laughter could be heard from the room and tears sprung to her eyes as she stood in the doorway, the bag dropping down to the floor beside her. The people in the room looked over as a sob escaped her lips and Karen rushed over to the bed.
“Eve!” She wrapped her arms around the blonde sitting up in bed.
She winced in pain, but put her arms around Karen, rubbing her back as she sobbed, “Shh… shh… it’s alright, love. Everything is going to be alright now. I promise.”

((I know… you love me.))
“I’m so glad that Eve’s going home at the end of the week.” Greg grinned at Mike as they walked down the hallway.
“I can’t wait! Now Karen will be free from this torture and I can resume my courtship.” He grinned.
The med. Student raised an eyebrow, “What’s with the formality there, dude?”
Mike chuckled, “I’m just in a good mood, that’s all. This whole Black-Week thing is really starting to turn around. I think I might actually be getting her to like me too.”
“Maybe that’s because you’ve been changing so much. Karen’s not stupid. She’s got eyes.” They turned the corner.
“Yeah, beautiful deep blue ones.” Mike sighed as Greg rolled his eyes at his roommate.
“Speaking of which, is Orlando going back to his set today? You know he’s your only competition.”
Mike rubbed his hands together, “I sure as hell hope so. I’m so sick of him stealing her affections away from me.” He scowled.
“Well, one thing’s for sure, we have to leave Karen and Eve alone for at least tonight. You know, give them each time to heal emotionally.” Greg and Mike turned another corner.
“Sounds good to me. Just so long as Karen gets better.” The medical student sighed in exasperation as Mike said, “What?”
“Never mind, man. Never mind.” He pat him on the back.

The room was dark, save for one small lamp in the corner where Karen was sitting. Up and down her arm, her fingertips ran along the horizontal lines there. She had started for no reason at all after her dad left her. At first, she thought that cutting open her flesh would bring an end to her life. She was tired of the sympathy and she was tired of being angry with her dad for what he had done. She was just so tired. A sigh resounded in the almost empty room. Even now, she could feel the burn of the knife as it carved her agony into its easel. Even now, she regretted her own painting.
It was Eve who had been the first to know of her plight. It was Eve who came to the funeral to hold her hand and lead her away in tears. It was her best friend who had cried for her, begging her to stop trying to end the very life she loved. And that friend was fast asleep, exhausted from all the bandage changes and medication. Karen couldn’t wake her up now just to express her pain to the girl. She could not do that, not after all they had been through in one weekend. But, she did not have to worry about waking the blonde. Eve reached over and took her friend’s hand, trying not to cause too much pain to her injury.
“Hey babe. What’s shaking?” She grinned as Karen looked at her with adoring eyes.
“Just… thinking.”
“About what, pray tell?” She cocked a brow at Karen’s scars.
“The past.” The shopkeeper looked down at the floor, allowing a pause to fill the room, “Eve… I’m so sorry for all of this. All I seem to do is cause you pain. Since the day I met you, all I’ve done is hurt you. Do… do you hate me? If you do, I’ll just walk out right now, and I’ll make sure to never hurt you again. I’m… I’m so sorry…” She started crying.
“Aw, Karen…” The blonde wiped away some of Karen’s tears, “Come here… give me a hug, okay?” She did as she was told, “I could never hate you. Never ever. You see, we’ve both just been hurting each other, but that’s not what you concentrate on in a relationship. Even though you hurt me, you’ve also helped me in so many ways, and I feel like I can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done. You remember that time when I had a fight with my parents and I ran away to your house?”
Karen sniffled, tears melting away on Eve’s hospital gown as she nodded, “Yeah…”
“Well? Didn’t that help me?” She soothed out Karen’s hair as she reluctantly nodded again, “See? And now I’m helping you out like a friend should always do. I love you, Karen. You’re like family.”
Karen squeezed Eve slightly as not to hurt her, “You’re the only family I have left. I was so scared I’d lose you.”
Soon the both of them were crying in each other’s arms, shaking and sobbing as the realization of what happened finally hit them. They were sisters, and they would never separate from each other. This bond should never have to break apart. After a couple of minutes, the two girls pulled away from each other’s embrace. Eve dried the rest of Karen’s tears on her face and then moved over on the bed, patting the space beside her. The shop-keep sat on the bed, happy to be with her best friend.
“I’ll never leave you. Not even in death, babe.” Eve grinned, hugging Karen again.
And they were healed from the torture instilled from the trials of the weekend. They were safe as Karen laid down next to her best friend to fall asleep. Even the nurse didn’t dare wake them from the bliss of dreams that came the next day.

Across town, Orlando yawned and stretched in his apartment. The still young actor walked about with silky black boxers and no shirt on. One of his favorite necklaces dangled from his neck and his hair was a tangled mess. It was clear that he had been sleeping during some course of the night. However, now he was pacing around looking like a bat out of hell and acting like he had drank too much coffee at once.
It was Karen. She had been on his mind the entire day and she just kept popping up at random intervals. He had confided with Johnny earlier that day, but her smiling face just wouldn’t stay out of his head. He was so worried about her, but who wouldn’t be? She was so fragile and young it was as if she could break at any second from all the pressure around her. Sure, he liked her. He wouldn’t have kissed her if he didn’t like her. It was just common sense for him to care for Karen the way he did. But now his mind began to run through the other possibilities.
Love? Could it be love for this girl that he was feeling? What was his heart telling him about his little shop owner? He traced it through the first time he had ever laid eyes on Karen in her own apartment. So delicate, so beautiful, with eyes that glowed as pools of wisdom and sadness. Then, he remembered when he first kissed her. It made him feel as if he was a teenager again, sharing his first kiss with the girl most close to him. But how could he be there for her when she needed it? Orli had already failed her as a friend. First, he left her to deal during her Black Week fiasco. Then, he left her to wallow in self-loathing when her friend was shot. He wasn’t even there at the moments to help her sleep.
He ran his fingers through the curly mop of mess on his head as he situated himself in a lying position on the couch. Somehow, he found himself thinking of how to make Karen be his girl. The only things he could think of were disposing of Mike and having sex with his raven-haired heartthrob. He knew that feeling something that intimate with this girl would make her fall head over heels for him. That is, if he did it just right, and sure, he had had tons of practice before (though cared not to share this with anyone) but somehow this was totally different.
It was going to be with the girl he lusted for.

The sun peeked over the horizon slowly, making the day seem warm and bright despite the fact that the highs were only going to be as high as thirty degrees. The weather called for some clouds throughout the day but enough sun to keep the temperature at a steady pace. Many pedestrians whom had no care in the world even achieved a brisk walk in the park. The nurses of the hospital were all instructed to at least coax most of the patients to try and enjoy some of the weather outside under the safety of blankets and wool coats. It was one of those nurses who woke Eve and Karen the next morning.
“Come on, dearies! Wake up! It’s a beautiful day outside!” She said in a bright and cheerful voice.
Karen was the first to squint open her eyes and ask, “What time is it?”
It turned out to only be eight thirty in the morning, but even so, Karen did not wish to be awake at all. The night before was still fresh in her heart and although they had been healed mentally, there was still an ache somewhere in her body. She was worried for many reasons. The first two huge things on her list were Orlando and Mike. How could she even think about coasting through life with two men hot in pursuit? She knew she would have to face them sooner or later and choose which one to be with, but how could she? Sure, Mike had been her stalker for a while, but there was something that she liked about him. And Orlando? Well, who could hate anything about Orlando?
The next problem was Eve’s well-being. Now, Eve would be staying with Karen and a nurse in the apartment above the shop. Things were bound to be a little hectic for the few weeks Eve had to stay there, but the shop-keep was sure she would survive. While in this train of thought, Eve opened her eyes as well and sat up next to Karen.
“G’morning!” She said cheerfully even though her shoulder was still burning from the shot.
“Hey you!” Karen grinned at her life-long friend, “Err… I have something else bothering me. Care to listen?”
“Sure thing.” Eve got in a ready position to hear what she had to say.
“Well, Mike and Orli are both after me romantically. I’m not sure which to pick. They both have redeeming qualities and all but--”
Eve interrupted, “Choose Orli.”
“Huh? Why?” She tilted her head to the side.
“Because he’s rich and famous. I mean, the sex has gotta be amazing!” She grinned.
A pause and then Karen rolled her eyes, her raven bangs almost hiding the gesture, “That’s not how it’s done.”
“Well, then, have sex with the both of them, see which one you like better and go with that.” She shrugged.
“Hm. I actually kinda liked that idea. Except for one flaw in your plan.”
“What’s that?” Eve asked.
“I’m still a flipping virgin! How the hell am I supposed to know what to do or who to do what with first!?” Karen threw her hands up into the air.
“Just don’t stop.” The blonde answered calmly, “Whatever happens, go with it. Let your emotions lead you into ecstasy beyond your wildest dreams. Just go for it.”
“How do you know all this? And who do I go with first?” Karen was in awe of the advice.
“I’m not a virgin, my dear, and whoever calls your phone first is the winner.” She smiled.
They both stared at the phone apprehensively. It had been lying on the night table next to the hospital bed since the night before. Karen picked it up to check for messages, which there were none of anyway. Both girls knew it would take a long time for one boy to call, especially since neither knew of the bet between these two chicks. Karen spent most of the day either staring at the phone or playing cards with Eve. Finally, it did ring. It was only three o’clock in the afternoon and the ring made both of them jump in that small room. Eve looked at Karen, who in turn, looked at the phone, unsure of what to do.
“Answer it!” Eve harshly whispered, as if the person on the phone could hear them talking.
Karen shook her head though, “Let the voicemail get it and make my life easier!”
It stopped ringing soon after she said that, but neither tore their eyes away from the phone. It made a lovely little chime noise, symbolizing a voicemail deep within. That entitled Karen to dodge after the phone and pick it up to see who it was. The blonde’s eyes went wide as she watched her friend press buttons frantically to listen to the message. She was almost bouncing up and down as Karen brought the phone up to her ear. She gasped and put a hand to her mouth in surprise of who was on the other line.
“It’s… it’s Orlando!” Eve squealed as the words left Karen’s lips.
“Are you really gonna go through with this?” She was so excited.
Karen paused, but then nodded, saying, “Damn straight, I am.” She walked over to the door, sliding the phone into her pocket, “Don’t wait up for me, Eve!”
“Good luck!” Eve gave her two thumbs, but as her friend turned to leave, she called her back, “Karen, promise me something?”
“What is it?”
“Promise me that sometime tonight you’ll go play the sax on the streets, okay?” Karen smiled at the request and then turned to go, already freaking out about the task at hand.
