“Are you ready?” he asked. Wondering where the conversation would lead.
“Yes. Go ahead and read the silly article.”
“You haven’t read it?”
“I don’t have time to read magazines much. I get them and toss them to the side. Besides.” She said, grabbing it and looking at the date. “This one is over a year old.” She slid it back to him. She waved her hand at him. “Go ahead, I’m waiting.”
“Okay, it’s titled ‘Your Love Checklist’.” Tia rolled her eyes once again. Orlando laughed.
“Don’t laugh, this could be Pulitzer Prize material here.”
“Yeah, okay Orli.” He cleared his throat.
“Number one. I’m still me.” He glanced up to see if there was any reaction from her. There wasn’t so he continued. “Number two. We can fight, kiss, and make up.” Tia snorted at that one. Her mind drifting back to the past and some fights that they had. And then she remembered the good times they had at making up. Orlando looked up at her. Almost knowing what she was thinking.
“Remember the time when we had that fight about you being late to your mom’s?” She said. He was supposed to meet her at his mom’s house for dinner, and he showed up four hours late. He smiled. Remembering.
“Yeah, I was so pissed up.”
“Me, your mom and Sam were so mad at you.”
“You didn’t talk to me for three days.”
“I know. And it was your mom’s birthday.”
“I know. And when you finally did talk to me, we made love for……” his voice trailed off. He looked up at her. Her cheeks flushed. Knowing that she remembered all too well what had happened during that make up session. They had made love for hours. Working themselves into complete exhaustion. They made love in every room of their flat. Sometimes twice. It was almost as if they couldn’t get enough of each other. Tia’s gaze met his. She felt every nerve in her body tingle. Remembering how they had explored each other’s bodies. Not leaving one inch of skin untouched by the other. Tia quickly stood up. She found it extremely hard to stay there sitting with him. She quickly finished putting dinner together. Orlando continued to watch every move she made.
“Need any help?” he asked once again. She didn’t look at him.
“No, continue reading if you want.” He cleared his throat and returned to look at the article.
“Number three. I’m able to be myself with him and speak honestly.” She turned and practically slammed his plate down in front of him.
“Sorry.” She said. This article was hitting closer to home than she wanted to admit. And she knew that he knew it as well.
“I’ll finish reading it later.”
“Okay.” They ate in silence. But every once in a while, making generic conversation. Tia avoided looking into his eyes. They nearly killed her every single time.
Orlando pushed his plate away. He rubbed his stomach in contentment.
“That was delicious. That isn’t jar sauce is it?” he asked. Tia smiled at him.
“No, I made it.”
“It’s great love.” She moved to pick up his plate but he pushed her hand away.
“I’ll do it later. Let’s go sit outside.” She didn’t argue. She was tired. It had been a very long day. They walked outside and sat down on the porch and sat on the old fashioned swing that hung there. Tia pulled her knees up next to her. Her feet just inches from him. She glanced over at him and noticed he had brought the magazine with him. He reached over and took hold of her feet and placed them in her lap. She went to protest, but he threw her a look that said ‘relax’. She stretched out her legs.
“Are you going to keep reading that dumb article?”
“Sure, why not?” Orlando flipped open back to the article and continued to read. “Number four. We’re on the same wavelength.”
They usually were. In everything that they did or thought. He didn’t comment but continued.
“Number five. Loving him brings out the best in me.” Tia looked over at Orlando. He was watching her. He did bring out the best in her. He encouraged her to pursue her photography. To strive to be the best that she could be. And she did. And she was successful.
“You always did.” She said. Her voice a whisper. He rested his hand on her leg. Gently rubbing it. Tia was sure he wasn’t even aware he was doing it.
“Number six. He’s my rock.” Tia pulled her legs away from him. His last words scared her. She had told him that once and now it seemed as if the past was coming back. She had shattered his rock. She quickly stood up. Tears forming in her eyes. She ran towards the barn.
“Tia!” Orlando yelled after her. He threw the magazine down and ran after her.
