Part XI
Spring Blossoms You to Me
A year had passed, and Piper was now on her own tour. It was spring and the states across the country were all blooming. She was trying to move on, but everything reminded her of Tyson. It didn’t help matters for her to be back in Stillwater on the tour. She often wondered about Tyson. Little did she know, but he was a wreck. He had tried to move on, but going on another tour probably wasn’t the best of plans. The All-American Rejects ended up having to cancel the second half of the tour because Tyson couldn’t handle the pressure of the audience and had suffered an emotional breakdown, once again. He was now back in Stillwater and staying at Nick’s house. He had more or less abandoned his own home in an attempt to forget her. Every time he had walked through his house he would think of her. Even something as simple and plain as the wallpaper had brought back memories of her. He was now sitting in front of the television in Nick’s living room watching Lifetime (for those who don’t know, Lifetime is a channel for women viewers that often shows sappy movies and series and such).
Meanwhile Nick was in the other room holding a letter from Piper in his hands. They had kept in touch over the year and he would often hang with her when she was near Stillwater. He knew she was upset, but was unaware as to how much. He slowly opened the letter, pulling the folded paper out, opening it, and began to read. Nick, hey, what’s up? As you probably know I’m coming to Stillwater to do a show at the college. I’d really like you to come, ‘cuz I miss you much. I hope Ty’s doing all right. Is he? Has he moved on? I’ve heard a ton of mixed things about him over the year. Is it true he’s a disaster? I know I am. As hard as I try I can’t leave him behind. I can’t do this, Nick, I can’t. Does he still love me like he used to? I suppose only in my dreams. After all the things we said to one another it seems damn near impossible for us to get back together. Gosh, there I go again with the water works. Sorry about the tearstains, but I’m too lazy to rewrite this. I guess I’d better stop while I’m ahead. Please come to my show and tell Ty hello for me. Lots of Love, Piper. He stopped reading and could now notice the tearstains on the letter in his hands. She had managed to keep them from hitting the ink. Damn, they’re both a mess. This is fucking stupid. He thought to himself. He looked at his calendar, which was hanging nearby. Shit the shows tonight. Damn Piper and her perfect timing. I guess it’s time to put plan A into action. He thought as he stood, the letter still in his grasp, and walked into the room where Tyson was sprawled out on the couch. He had wanted Tyson to heal, but being away from Piper wasn’t helping the process as Nick had hoped. He threw the letter on the table in front of Tyson, but he didn’t even flinch.
“Damn it, Ty! Get your ass up and get ready to go!” Tyson looked up at Nick.
“What’ya talking about? I don’t want to go anywhere.” Tyson replied. Nick draped Tyson’s arm over his neck and dragged the bass player to the bathroom, stopping only to pick up the letter and stuff it in his back pocket. “Nick, come on, let me go.” Tyson quietly protested. He was in no way ready to venture into the reality of the cruel world without Piper. Nick got him into the shower and turned the water on as cold as it would go. “FUCK!” Tyson screamed, the loudest thing to come out of his mouth in a year. Nick couldn’t help but laugh.
“Yeah, and get showered and dressed. You need to shave too.” He paused as Tyson stood in the shower. He took the letter from his back pocket and threw it on the ground. “When you’re done you read that. It’s a letter from Piper. She asked about you at least ten times and the letter was addressed to me. She talked more about you then anything else. Now, hurry up. You’re gonna go get your girl back.” Nick finished and walked out of the bathroom leaving Tyson alone. Tyson looked down at the letter on the floor and began to strip down.
Piper was about to walk out of her dressing room, having received her five-minute call, when her phone rang. She walked over and answered it.
“Hello?” She asked.
“Hey, it’s me, Nick. I’m here back stage waiting for you. Where you at?” He said. Piper walked out of her dressing room and soon saw Nick standing, waiting for her. She ran towards him, hanging up her phone in the process. She hugged him. “God, it’s good to see you.” She stated pulling out of his embrace.
“Yeah, it’s good to see you too. How you holding up? Your letter said you felt like hell.” He asked smiling at her.
“I do, but I’m fine for now. How are you?” She asked with a halfhearted smile. Nick knew Tyson would soon be back from the restroom, so he had to think fast.
“I’m good.” He looked out into the audience. I’m home free. He thought realizing they were cheering for Piper. “Looks like your fans are cheering for you.” He replied. Piper turned to the crowd.
“Yeah, I’d better get out there before they tear the place apart. I’ll see you after the show.” She gave him one more hug before heading out onto the stage. Tyson walked over to Nick and then looked out at the stage. There she was; the girl he loved. He couldn’t take it; her being so close, but yet so far, was just too much for his emotionally unstable self to handle. He turned and walked behind the curtain and found a place where he couldn’t be seen and couldn’t see her. He picked a nice spot on the floor and sat with his head resting on his knees, trying to hide his face from the world. Nick smiled to himself; things were going according to plan.
The show was almost over when Piper turned her view to Nick back stage. Tyson was still behind the curtain. Piper thought to herself and decided she’d play the one song she knew the public needed to hear. Nick had already heard it and knew that she was planning on singing it tonight by the letter she had sent him. She turned back to the crowd after receiving a smile from Nick and began to speak.
“I’d like to close the show tonight with a song I hold close to my heart.” She paused. “As you all know, Tyson and I split about a year ago and we both went through a lot.” Tyson’s head popped up at her words. “Well, it’s been really hard, but I’ve written this song and I think y’all should be the first to hear it. After all, Ty and I lived here in Stillwater together and spent some of our happiest days here.” She looked back at Nick for the support she needed to continue. “Ty, wherever you are tonight; this one’s for you with love. Here’s ‘Leaving is Harder Then I Thought’.” Tyson appeared beside Nick as Piper began to sing. He watched her, Nick noticed, with a certain longing in his eyes. A longing to hold her, and feel her next to him again. Tyson couldn’t take his eyes off of Piper as she began to sing. “I gotta get out, just gotta get out of here, can’t hold me in, can’t push me out, I’m running out of tears, lost all these years, crying over you, so now I’m leaving, to start a new. You taught me everything, you taught me how to love, you made me realize, there’s more of life to learn, you taught me to be confident, you believed in me, and now you’ve left this place, to find a so-called life.” She paused letting her words sink in before coming back in on her cue. “I gotta get out, just gotta get out of here, can’t hold me in, can’t push me out, I’m running out of tears, lost all these years, crying over you, so now I’m leaving, to start a new, My life is nothing now, that you’ve gone away, you were the air I breathed, the light I needed to see past today, so now I leave this place, leave the memories behind, but no matter how I try, I’ll never forget your face, and the times we shared.” The music picked up. Tears were welling in her eyes. Tyson already had a fresh trail of silent tears flowing from his eyes. Nick looked over at him. Fucking shit it’s working. He couldn’t believe his plan was working. “I gotta get out, just gotta get out of here, you can’t hold me in, you can’t push me out, I’m running out of tears, I’ve lost all these years, crying, and crying over you.” Her tears were now visible and she became blinded by them as she continued. “So now I leave this pla-a-a-ace behind, leave all the memories behind, or at least I try, oh how I try, try to start a new.” That was the end and it was a good thing because as the audience erupted into applause of approval Piper practically ran off stage, her tears still blinding her site. She ran right into a familiar embrace and cried. Familiar arms gently wrapped around her. Slowly, as her tears were no longer blinding, she looked up to view Tyson’s baby blue eyes and they, too, were flooded with tears. “Ty…” She whispered. She couldn’t believe that he was actually here standing in front of her, holding her again. He smiled at her.
“Pipes, I’ve missed you.” He replied softly. She smiled up at him.
“I’ve missed you, too.” Tyson gently wiped the tears from her eyes.
“I’m sorry.” He paused. “I’m sorry for everything. All the shit that happened; all of it.” She moved her arms so that they loosely hung around his neck.
“Ty, God, I’m sorry too. I’ve been miserable without you.” They both slightly laughed.
“Me too.” He paused again. “I guess we’ve both been pretty fucking stupid, huh?” Nick smiled to himself. ‘Bout damn time they realized it. He thought.
“Yeah.” She looked deep into Tyson’s eyes. “Ty, can we find some way to make it work?” She asked. Tyson leaned down, pulling her closer in the process and kissed her. He pulled back just enough to see her reaction. “I guess that’s a yes.” She said, smiling to herself while remembering the night they had first gotten together.
“That’s a hell yes.” They both laughed slightly. He looked back into her eyes. “It’s really true what they say about never knowing what you have until you lose it.” He gently brushed a strand of hair out of her eyes. “I love you, Pipes.” He whispered.
“I love you too, Ty.” She paused thinking. “Never leave again. Promise me that.” He leaned over her, his lips mere millimeters from hers.
“Never again.” With that he kissed her passionately. Nick stood back and watched as Tyson and Piper kissed. He had gotten them back together, initially saving them both from their own personal living hell. Things were once again peaceful. Spring had really blossomed Tyson and Piper together.
