CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
“You’re going to be fined.” Brian said. Josh sighed.
“Well, what can I do. Karen wasn’t feeling well and I had to help her. I got a call from one of the kids.”
“Next time you need to be thinking about your commitments Josh. It’s all fine and dandy to have a personal life but you belong to the public right now.” Josh rolled his eyes but said nothing out loud. He knew better then to say anything. He was in enough trouble as it was.
“What’s my next show?” He asked.
“You have a whole day to yourself. Spend it wisely and then meet me in Georgia morning after next.” They hung up and Josh blew air out of his mouth. He called his mom and listened to her rant and rave for 20 minutes.
“I don’t care what you do, don’t you ever ignore my phone calls! You had me thinking you had been kidnapped or worse!” He sighed.
“I’m sorry.” He said for the fourth time in the phone call.
“This isn’t the first time I’ve said this.” She sighed. “Will you ever listen?” He smiled.
“I doubt it.” She cried out.
“Joshua!” He laughed.
“What?” He teased.
“You’re still not too old to go over my knee.” She threatened. He laughed out loud.
“Oh yeah I am! And by the way …” He trailed off, not sure if he should say anything to her yet or not.
“What?” She asked. Too late now, the bait had been taken.
“How do you feel about being a grandmother?” There was a dreadful silence on the other end of the phone. “Hello?” He asked finally.
“I, I …” She stuttered. He chuckled softly.
“I can’t tell if that’s good or bad.”
“I’m not sure!” She said. “Can I digest it and let you know?” He coughed nervously.
“Of course.” He didn’t expect her to gush at the thought of it, especially since he wasn’t yet married but he was happy, shouldn’t she be?
“I’m going to assume there’s a wedding in your future?” He grinned.
“You know it!”
“Okay young man, go back to Karen and let me think on this for a while. And next time I call …”
“I will answer!” He finished the sentence for her.
“Or else! Father or not you will be in trouble with your own mother!” He thanked her, told her he loved her and hung up. The kids were tucked into their beds and Karen was still sleeping. He made his way around the house, turning off lights then brushed his teeth for bed. He was just slipping in between the sheets when he heard his cell phone ring again. He sighed and got up. He looked at the caller I.D. and didn’t recognize the number but answered anyway.
“I’m sorry to call Josh.” It was Rachel. He took the phone to bed with him and crawled under the covers. The sheets were cool and sent shivers up and down his spine.
“It’s okay. What’s up?”
“I just wanted to make sure you’d gotten where you were going and if everything was all right.” He smiled.
“How very thoughtful of you!” He said and curled himself around Karen who was warm and cozy. “I did and thank you so much!”
“Good, good.” There was an uncomfortable silence. “Well … good night.”
“Good night, Rachel, and thanks for calling. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate what you did.”
“You’re welcome. Be safe.” She said before hanging up. He set the phone down on the bedside table and curled into his woman. He held her to him and before falling into a deep, much deserved slumber, vowed he would never lose her again.
Karen woke to the delicious smell of coffee. Her stomach growled. She wondered when was the last time she ate anything … She sat up and panic flooded through her. The kids! She checked the clock on the bedside table … it was after 10. She flung the covers off her legs and leaped to a stand. Quickly slipping her legs into her sweat pants she grabbed a tee shirt, slipped it on and headed down the hallway to Ryan’s room. She opened the door and found it empty. She made her way towards the kitchen and the appetizing smell of her favorite morning beverage. She stopped when she saw Josh. He leaned against the counter, his legs crossed, a cup of steaming coffee in his hand. He smiled. Her heart leaped into her throat. She swallowed hard. It was so good to see him there. She was flooded with warmth.
“Good morning.” He said softly. Karen smiled and moved slowly towards him. “Nice shirt.” He said. She looked down and then giggled when she saw that she had put his shirt on instead of hers. He set the down the mug and slipped his arms around her as she approached. When she lay her head down on his chest, he ran his fingers through her hair and then pulled her head up to his. He kissed her lightly. “How did you sleep?” He wrapped his arms tightly around her and held her close.
“Good.” She said muffled into his chest.
“Good?” He asked. She stuffed her hands into the back pockets of his jeans.
“Okay then, great!” He chuckled softly.
“Yeah, me too.” He sighed. “For the first time in a while.” Karen nodded.
“Where are the kids?” She asked.
“School, where they should be.” She sighed.
“Thank you.” Josh kissed the side of her head.
“My pleasure.” They stood there, pressed close together, eyes closed, neither one of them wanting to let go for fear they would wake up and be apart.
“I need coffee.” She said, finally. He pulled back, poured her coffee and shoved the mug into her hands. She sipped slowly. As the coffee slid down her throat it was warm and comforting but once it hit her stomach she nearly wretched. Probably because she was so empty, she reasoned. Her face was swollen and it ached from crying. Her body felt like she had been beaten. Josh led her into the living room and they sat down on the couch. He turned sideways and pulled her to him. She lay against him, enjoying the feel of him so close and warm.
“Should we talk?” Josh asked timidly. She took another sip of the coffee, felt the nausea wave and swallowed hard. She handed him the mug and asked him to set it on the table. She couldn’t bear to drink it just then. She closed her eyes and felt his rhythmic breathing. It was consoling.
“Yeah, I guess we should.” She said after a while. She felt him take a drink and could almost trace the trail of it as he swallowed and it moved down into his belly. The silence in the room was uncomfortable. There was so much to be said and yet neither one of them spoke.
“I will move here.” Josh said softly. “I can’t stand to be away from you.”
“You don’t have to.” Karen said with a sigh. “I’m okay with the traveling.”
“Listen, I don’t care what we have to do, I just want to be with you.” She pulled his arm from the back of the couch down around her shoulders and laced her fingers with his.
“Me too.” They were once again silent. “We’re going to have a baby.” She whispered. His fingers tightened around hers.
“I know.”
“How do you feel about that?” He set his coffee cup down next to hers and pulled her into his arms and then up onto his lap. She turned to him and saw that he was smiling.
“Like a proud dad-to-be.” He kissed her, his mouth lingering on hers, delighting in their softness. “Are you feeling okay?” He whispered. She nodded.
“I think so. I haven’t eaten much lately.” And as if on cue, her belly grumbled. He slid his hand across it and lay it there.
“We need to feed baby.” He said and smiled. She giggled and then stared at him. He was so handsome, his cheeks were pink, his eyes large and brown, his nose long and straight, mouth red and lips damp. She reached up and twisted one of his curls around her finger. She wondered if the baby would have the curls or be cursed with her hair. His mouth curled up at the ends in a smile. “What are you thinking?” He asked. She leaned forward and kissed the tip of his nose.
“How beautiful you are.” She said. He grunted.
“Go get dressed so we can feed baby.” He said shoving her off his lap. She padded off into the bedroom and while she dressed he dumped the coffee and set the mugs in the sink.
CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
Karen looked around and frowned. How was it possible that they were in the most expensive restaurant in all of Cleveland, it was a Friday night and there was not another single soul around save for waiters who stood by like vultures waiting to swoop on some unsuspecting small animal. Josh was busy with his nose in the menu trying to decide what to order. He watched her out of the corner of his eye, lowered the menu and raised one eyebrow.
“Karen?” He said softly. She glanced at him.
“Hmm?” She asked.
“Why aren’t you looking at the menu?” She frowned and looked around the restaurant again. “Karen?”
“I can’t figure it out.” She said, frustrated. He sighed. He knew to what she was referring but wouldn’t let on that he knew.
“You can’t figure what out?” He slid his hand across the table and set it on top of hers and stroked her lightly.
“Why this restaurant is so … dead.” She bit her lip. He shrugged casually and then picked up the menu again.
“Come on sweetie, decide what you want, I’m hungry.” He said and slid her menu towards her. She picked it up and glanced at it.” She wasn’t hungry. Since she’d become pregnant her appetite had gone down the toilet. Since Josh had discovered she was pregnant and that she didn’t want to eat he had been right by her side forcing meals into her. She appreciated that.
“I’m not hungry.” She muttered.
“I know that but it doesn’t matter what you want, you’re eating for two now.” She rolled her eyes and sighed.
“If you say that one more time I’m going to beat you senseless.” He laughed. He’d been saying it for a month now and mostly just to annoy her but partially because it was true.
“Would you like me to decide for you honey?” He asked setting the menu down on the side of the table and taking a sip of ice water from a wine glass. She nodded. It didn’t matter what she ate, it all tasted like crap anyway. The moment she set down the menu the waiter was upon them. Josh smiled.
“We are both going to have the baked manicotti …”
“Oh God, Josh, no hot, stringy cheese!” Karen said quickly. Without blinking Josh replied, “Make that the regular manicotti.” The waiter inquired as to what salad dressing they would like. Josh waved it away. “Salad isn’t necessary.” He said since Karen had completely sworn off of it in the last month.
“Bread! Bring bread, lots of bread.” Karen added as the waiter collected the menus, turned on his heel and trotted away. She sipped her water and nervously looked around the empty place. It was just weird! Two men dressed in tuxedos began strolling the place, violins attached to their chins, bows to strings causing beautiful Italian music to fill the empty room. She glanced at them and smiled then looked back at Josh. He reached forward and took her hands into his.
“It’s great being with you here tonight.” He said. She nodded. It was great being anywhere with him. She had missed him terribly during their brief separation but was comforted in the fact that they were back together and going to have a baby in 7 months. The violinists had made their way over to the table and played to them. The melody flowed from one song to the next and suddenly Karen thought she recognized the song they were playing. It was just then that a piano began to play from the corner – a familiar tune and one that went with what the violinists were playing. Josh got up and pulled Karen up with him. He began to sing with the music ….
“Like the sound of silence calling,
I hear your name and suddenly I’m falling …
Lost in a dream.
Like the echoes of our souls are meeting
You say those words, my heart stops beating ….
I wonder what it means?”
Karen giggled as Josh sang to her, the violinists playing along with the piano in the corner. She felt a rush of emotion as the words to the song hit home and she began to cry. The further he got into it the faster and heavier the tears came and by the time he finished he held her tightly in his arms and wiped the tears away with the sleeve of his white shirt and he didn’t care about the smear of mascara either. He slid down to the floor on one knee and pulled a box out of his suit coat pocket. Karen gasped as the realization of it all dawned on her, the empty restaurant, the fancy clothes, the violins … Josh opened the box and the stone inside shimmered in the dim light. She brought her hands up to her face and covered her mouth.
“Karen, my dear …” He began. His hands were trembling and he did his best to hold them steady. It was becoming a real chore. She sighed. “I can tell you honestly from the bottom of my heart that since I’ve met you my life has changed and for the better. We’re always going to have trials but if we face them together then we will succeed and that’s why tonight, I’m down on one knee and asking you to be my wife so that we can face the world together not as two but as one.”
“Oh Josh!” She said and pulled him up to her. He hugged her tightly and then bent down to her lips.
“Well?” He asked softly. She smiled tearfully.
“Of course!” She said. He kissed her and then took her left hand. She held her fingers out wide as he slipped the two carat princess cut diamond ring onto her finger. She held it up to her face and then jumped into his arms. “I love you!” She said. The others in the room clapped for them and then, when they broke apart went onto what they had been doing. Josh held Karen’s chair out for her and she sat. He then went back to his seat across from her and watched proudly as she stared at the ring, turning it this way and that to get the perfect glimpse of it. It glimmered in the light like a thousand twinkling stars on a dark night. Karen sighed as she finally figured out that Josh had “rented” the whole restaurant for them for the one night, their special occasion. Now she had everything she could ever want in her life … Josh, his baby, her children, an impending marriage, and in two days she was moving to California into the house that Josh bought for them. She was so excited, she felt the excitement swell in her chest so large that she almost couldn’t breathe. The water brought the bread and set it down in front of them. She dug into it hungrily. Bread was the one thing she could eat without side effects and so eat it she did …
CHAPTER TWENT-THREE
Josh sat next to his lawyer and looked around at the familiar faces in the room. He clenched and unclenched his hands nervously. Sam and his lawyer had been out of the room for nearly half an hour hashing over the deal Josh’s team of lawyers had spent days putting together. Basically Josh offered Sam to have the kids two-to-three weeks of the year for vacation in any spot of his choosing sponsored by Josh. In addition to that there was a large lump sum of money involved in it if he were to agree to let them live in California with their mother. If he didn’t agree to the settlement then there was no alternative. Josh would live in Ohio so Karen could continue to share custody of their children with Sam. He laced his fingers together in his lap, closed his eyes and said a silent prayer that he would be open to it. Just then the door swung in and the two men entered the room, solemn. The two other lawyers who had been pacing the room sat down at the table across from Sam. Sam kept his head down, eyes lowered while his barrister spoke.
“The agreement …” He began. Josh felt a knot in his throat and his stomach tightened; he swallowed hard. “Is acceptable to my client.” Josh felt an immense weight being lifted off of him and until he went to blow the air out of his lungs he hadn’t realized he’d been holding his breath. “Do you have a check for him today?”
****************************************************************************
After Sam signed all the papers and had been paid, everyone stood. The men began shaking hands. Josh turned to Sam and stuck out his hand. Sam looked at Josh and for a fleeting moment Josh thought he saw some hint of regret in his eyes but that look quickly fled and was replaced by a smile. Sam took Josh’s hand slowly and pumped it up and down.
“It’s good doing business with you, Josh. I hope you and Karen are happy.” Josh pulled his hand away and sighed.
“Thanks.” He said. The men began to file out of the room and Josh sat down hard in the chair. He suddenly felt a wave of nausea sweep over him and tried to sort out what it was exactly he was feeling. When the nausea had passed grief had settled in it’s place. After some soul searching he figured out that he was sad because he would never be able to tell Karen or the kids that he had paid off Sam to let them go. It was something he would never, in his whole lifetime ever understand when a father could replace his children with a very large sum of money. He hoped he’d never be able to understand it. Slowly and unsteadily Josh made his way out of the room, down the hall and into the elevator. He leaned against the wall as the elevator descended and the Muzak played vowing he would never let Karen know what had transpired that day. Josh burst out of the law building and into the icy world. He pulled up the collar on his coat and headed towards the parking garage …
****************************************************************************
Karen paced nervously around the small room. Her mom sat on a nearby chair and fanned herself with a paper plate.
“What time is it?” Karen asked. Her mom instinctively looked at her wrist but found no watch there. She sighed and glanced around the room, nothing. She was about to tell Karen she didn’t know when she found a small clock on a side table near the loveseat in the far end of the room.
“Ten-to-two.” She said. Karen sighed. It was almost time. She went to the mirror and checked her make-up. Even in the heat it was still perfect. She daubed on a little more lipstick and then Tony stuck his head in the door.
“Time!” He said. Karen headed for the door, smoothing down her silk and lace white dress, her mother following closely behind. She met her father in the entryway. He held out his arm to her. She slipped hers inside it and they both looked forward as the violin began to play.
As Karen made her way slowly down the aisle of the quaint little church that was nestled in a small town near Puerto Vallarta Mexico, Josh watched with a nervous smile plastered across his face. His body trembled and Chris watched him closely. He’d been jittery all day, complaining of not being able to breathe, taking shallow breaths and blowing them out audibly. Now he stood, hands clasped together to prevent them from visibly shaking. Chris leaned forward placing his hand against Josh’s back. Josh sighed again. ‘He’s gonna go down’ Chris thought and winked at Jack. Jack watched carefully, ready to leap at a moment’s notice. As Karen approached, Josh reached out and took her hand. They turned to the minister and the ceremony began. When it was over and they had made it outside, Josh finally took his first deep breath – and then fainted.
