Chapter 11
When Toshiya opened the door, he was rather surprised to see a Tokyo cop on the other side. He didn’t wait for an explanation from the cop as to why he was there before he spoke.
“Sorry, Officer, I’m sure there’s been a mistake.” the man looked at the blue haired bassist for a moment, a puzzled expression on his face.
“Has there? Is this not Toshimasa Hara’s apartment? Then, can you direct me to his apartment? It is urgent that I speak with him as soon as possible.” Toshiya stared at him for a long while, his eyes wide, and his mind going over everything that he had done recently, making sure that he hadn’t broken any laws.
“I’m Toshimasa Hara. What’s the problem? Did I do something wrong?” Toshiya said, positively certain that he hadn’t broken a law since he was in high school, but that didn’t mean anything with the way his luck had been going lately.
“No, you did nothing wrong. Actually, it’s about your friend, Andou Daisuke.” the police officer broke eye contact with Toshiya for the first time since the door had been opened, and looked toward the floor as he began to fumble around with his hat nervously.
“What about him? Is he okay?” Toshiya’s thoughts about himself faded the moment he heard Die’s name.
“I’m afraid there’s been an accident. We believe he was leaving the bar, after having drank a hefty amount of alcohol, and lost control of his car. He plowed headlong into another vehicle. The driver and both passengers of the other vehicle walked away with minor bumps, bruises, and cuts, but Andou-san had to be rushed to the hospital. He is currently in critical condition at the Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinic.” Toshiya felt his eyes burn with tears as the officer told him the news. The other man seemed to have noticed that he was not taking it too well, and offered the bassist a bit of comfort. “Sir, if you would like, I could give you a ride to the hospital so that you could see him.” Toshiya stared at the cop for a moment as he tried to process his words. Finally, the blue haired man nodded in response before slowly pulling on his shoes and locking the front door to leave.
When they reached the hospital, Officer Yamada went to find out what room Daisuke was in, Toshiya right behind him. It was taking almost all of Toshiya’s strength to hold back the tears that he knew would fall, regardless of his efforts, once he saw the only man he’d ever loved lying on some hospital bed. Much to his displeasure, he was right.
Almost as soon as he entered the small white room which Die was being kept in, he had barely managed to stifle the sob that came from him, but he was helpless against the tears that streamed down his face. Yamada recognized that it was difficult for him to see his friend like this, and left Toshiya alone with the red head.
Slowly, he edged his way over to the apparently sleeping form of Andou Daisuke.
“I’m sorry. Die, can you hear me? I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean what I said earlier about you and Kyo.” he carefully sat down in the chair that was next to the bed, and gently took Die’s hand into his own. He seemed rather cold. “Please, forgive me. I’m so stupid. I should have believed you this morning when you said it was nothing. But, the truth is, I didn’t want to be a bigger burden to you if you were just saying that to make Kaoru happy, or Kyo, or even Shinya. I don’t ever want to hold you back, but to hold you close.” Toshiya let his eyes drift up to see Die’s still face. The light reflected off from his unnaturally pale skin. It was as if in a matter of hours, the red head had lost all color in his skin, and he looked as though he had never stepped foot into sunlight. His parted lips were graced with a cut, and several more were scattered all over his face. The bassist also noted that there was a large knot over the other man’s left eye, possibly from hitting his head on something. It, too, was adorned with a cut, though it seemed somewhat larger than some of the others that surrounded it. Toshiya began to scan Die for any other signs of injury. It wasn’t long before he saw the numerous bruises on the older man’s chest through the partially opened hospital robe. Carefully, he let his free hand skim over the bruised flesh, only to find out that the bones under it were broken, some worse than others. Several ribs, and both collar bones were the bones that Toshiya knew had been broken, and he was certain that they were accompanied by several others that had also been broken. He wanted so much to hug the man he loved, but he didn’t for fear of causing more harm than good. In Die’s current state, the most he would be able to take was the bassist’s soft caresses, signs that he cared given all too late. He sat staring at Die, watching him to see if he might wake up so that he can hear Toshiya’s apologies. When Toshiya saw that he wasn’t making any move to wake up, he looked to see why the room had been so quiet this whole time, and what the other members were doing. The bassist was shocked to see that he was the only one in this room, aside from Die, and he quickly pulled out his cell phone to call the first number to enter his mind.

“Moshi moshi?” Kyo’s spoke, obviously still tired and irritated. The grey haired vocalist had been sleeping peacefully for once and the ringing of the phone woke him about the fourth time the person on the other end called.
“Kyo? Finally! I’ve been trying to get ahold of you for a while, now. Where were you?”
“I was--”
“Oh, never mind, I don’t need to know that. I am calling to find out why you are not here.” Kyo pulled the phone away from his ear and gave the phone an questioning look, as though he thought the other may be able to see his expression.
“What are you talking about? Where is it I’m supposed to be exactly? What’s going on, and… have you been crying?” Kyo had just registered that the younger man’s voiced sounded slightly cracked and hoarse.
“Here! The hospital, with Die!”
“What do you mean ‘the hospital, with Die’?” Toshiya now had Kyo’s full, awakened attention.
“Didn’t you hear? Die was in a car accident when he was trying to drive back to his apartment drunk. He had just left the bar. You may want to hurry, he’s in critical condition, according to Officer Yamada.”
“What hos--”
“Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinic. ICU 136 is the floor and room number. You really had no idea?” Toshiya heard a hurried ‘no’ from the other end of the line before the sound of Kyo hanging up the phone reached his ear. The bassist sat for a moment, thinking. ‘If they didn’t tell him, then… did they bother to tell any of the others?’ Toshiya turned his cell phone back on and called Shinya.
“Moshi moshi, Toshiya.”
“Moshi moshi. Um, Shinya? Have you heard anything from the police or hospital or anyone? Or seen the news?”
“Uh… no? Should I have?” Shinya more asked than answered, but it was enough of an answer for Toshiya.
“So, they didn’t tell you either. Well, you need to come to Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinic. Die has been in a car accident, and he’s hurt pretty bad.”
“Toshiya,” the drummer leaned against the counter and sighed deeply. “That’s not funny, you know.” How could Toshiya be saying such things. He knew that the bassist still loved the red head, so why would he say that the older man was hurt? What a sick way to get a laugh.
“I know it’s not funny, but I’m not trying to -be- funny. I’m serious. Turn on the news, and you’ll see Die’s car practically welded to another!” Toshiya was shocked that his friend would think that he was making up such a horrible fate for the one he loved so much, and that his friend knew that he loved.
“Toshiya, you know I don’t watch tv. The only reason I even have one is because I didn’t want to listen to the rest of you whine when you were here.”
“Shinya, listen to me! Die is in the hospital! I’m sitting right beside him now, looking at him. I’m holding his hand, and--”
“Toshiya, knock it off. If you really cared about Die at all, you wouldn’t have said what you did this morning. Sure, Die is severely injured, but it’s not from some bull shit car accident. Die is hurt because of your words! He called me a couple hours ago, crying so hard I could barely understand what he was saying. I did manage to catch one sentence he said over and over, though. He said: ‘why can’t I just stop loving Toshiya the way he stopped loving me?’. You know, I’d never felt so useless in my entire life. Never had I been in a position where a friend was in great need of comforting words, and I was unable to provide them.”
Toshiya sat still, holding the phone to his ear. Tears were streaming from his eyes, but he didn’t dare let Shinya know that for fear he may say that the older man was just looking for attention.
“Look, when you find out from someone else that I’m not lying or joking, come here. He’s on the ICU floor, in room 136.” the bassist said, struggling to maintain a level voice.
“Look, Toshiya, it’s late. Get some sleep. I’ll call Kaoru and let him know that you need a bit of time off. You really shouldn’t be working in your current state.” Shinya said, his voice not softening any, but still without the accusatory tone it once had.
“No, don’t worry about it. I’ll talk to Kaoru. I needed to talk to him about something anyway.” with that, the blue haired man hung up the phone and began to dail the leader’s home phone number.
* * *
Shinya sat there, with the phone still against his ear, for a few minutes. He knew that Toshiya had hung up, but he was still trying to process everything they had talked about. Everything Toshiya had said about Die. What if Die really had been in a car accident? What would it hurt to go to the hospital and find out? If Toshiya was lying, then he could just turn on the T.V. and see regular programs without his friend's car appearing through the small glass window. The red head shrugged and sighed as he went back into the living room. He picked up the remote and turned on the T.V. then began flipping through the channels, trying to find the news. Finally, he found the correct channel, and within seconds, the image of Die's crushed car flashed onto the screen. Shinya froze as his heart skipped a beat, and the remote fell from his now limp hand. He was in total disbelief, even as a headline reading 'Guitarist Andou Daisuke Injured In Drunk Driving Accident' scrolled across the bottom of the screen. Quickly, the drummer turned off the electric box, grabbed his keys, and walked out of the apartment, mumbling a farewell to Miyu as he locked the door to leave.
