“Wake up, my sleepy head.”
Alex shifted a little, but continued to sleep. Dwayne starred at her a couple minutes, watching her warm skin shine under the sun that peaked through her window. He had stayed up most the night, studying her sleeping habits. He could understand how he’d let years go by without touching her, kissing her, breathing in her scent. It was surprising that after years, Alex still smelled like a mix of Burberry perfume and soap.
“Come on Alex,” he begged, kissing her bare shoulders. “It’s late.”
Her eyes slowly opened and he hand reached for her cellphone. She opened it, groaned loudly, and then closed it again. Alex threw her cellphone against the wall, reaching up and pulling his chest down onto hers. “Can you shut up? It’s 8. Seriously, since when are you an early riser?”
Dwayne laughed, “I was always an early riser Alex. Now open those pretty brown eyes for me or I’ll kiss them open.”
He could tell she was holding in giggles, eyes shut tightly. Dwayne pressed his lips on her eyes, making loud noises with each kiss. She shook her head back and forth, letting the giggles escape. “Gross!”
“Gross? Oh really? See if I go kissing--”
“Dwayne!”
He laughed, pulling her into his arms, rolling onto his back. Her deep breaths on his chest sent waves of warmth throughout his body.
“What time do you need to check out?”
“Hour and a half.”
“Okay then, get up. You need to pack before we leave.”
Her eyes opened widely, getting up prepared for a fight. “WE can’t actually leave together.”
“We just have to make sure no one sees us.”
“No no... it’s not that. I promised John I’d go with him.”
Dwayne sat up, playing with a strand of her hair to keep himself sane from the jealousy boiling slowly inside him. “Cena? Why would you go with Cena?”
“I feel like it.”
“You... you feel like it?”
She shook her head, sighing. “Dwayne, one night... it doesn’t give you the right to think that you can tell me what I’m doing.”
“I never--”
“Wait. I’ll see you in a couple hours. You can have me all to yourself. Promise.”
Alex smiled nervously. He wanted to argue with her some more, tried to find a way. But the sweet smile on her lips couldn’t bring him to ruin his first night back in her arms. “Only because you promised me all night.”
15 minutes later she was kissing him quickly before sending him off. She turned to head for a shower but she hadn’t even gotten her robe off when she heard the knock on the door. “John? You’re early I haven’t even showered yet.” She swung open the door, assuming it would be John on the other end but Dave was there instead. “Wait, no no. Go. Now.”
She attempted to close the door but Dave, with all his strength, pushed the door back.
“Explain why Dwayne just left your room.”
Alex laughed despite herself, “Fuck off.” She was past being sad, she was angry. “You don’t have better things to do? Go have breakfast with your new play toy or something, I need a shower.”
Dave felt like slamming his fist into the wall, his temper being tampered with. “Alex, it wasn’t what you think. It’s not what you think.”
“It’s exactly what I think, I’m sure. You play this ‘I love you’ game. You make me think a billion and one things. But they are all wrong. You could give two shits about me. Last night is all the proof I needed about that.”
He shook his head, “I was drunk Alex. Drunk.”
“Did you have sex with her? Hmm?”
Dave stayed quiet. Alex sighed, placing her palm on her forehead and resting against her door frame. “And THIS is why Dave. Because even when I caught you, you did it anyways. Fuck being drunk. Just... go away okay?”
With that, she finally slammed the door in his face.
~~~~
“What’s up?”
“What?”
Alex had been starring out the window the past hour in silence, thinking and replaying her night. Now, looking at John, she realized she’d been ignoring him and she blushed, reaching out and rubbing the back of his head. “Sorry, long night.”
“Long night?” John raised an eyebrow, smiling.
She shook her head, closing her eyes and resting against the seat. “Sorta. Promise not to look at me badly?”
John turned to look at her, “Shoot.”
“Slept with Dwayne.”
John had grabbed a his bottled water so when Alex said it he choked a little. “Kidding?”
“No?”
John sighed, feeling like a huge knife had been pushed into his stomach. “I’m assuming you didn’t plan it.”
Alex laughed a little, looking out the window again, “I wish I had planned NOT to. I just dug myself a big nasty hole to sit in.” She rubbed her finger against a spot on the window.
“Pretty much. But hey,” he said as he reached out, placing his hand on her chin making her face him, “you have me.”
She felt like her breath had been taken away on the spot. John had a tendency to do it sometimes, without even knowing (not that he wasn’t trying). He smiled, letting his feelings bottle up as he tried to play off his jealousy. He decided quickly to change the subject.
“Okay so I have a question, nothing to do with Dwayne.”
“What is it?”
“What’s a McMahon wedding like?”
Alex laughed, “That’s random.”
John laughed, grabbing his water, “No like... I see Paul and Steph right? And I know the story behind it all but I just can’t imagine the wedding. A bunch of wrestlers and normal people all in the same room with booze. Like Amy’s birthday but not.”
“Close. I dunno, that whole experience was a blur. Alot happened. Dwayne didn’t go because it was the same weekend of his wedding anniversary or something, it was the first time I met Dave, and... alot happened. Paul doesn’t remember most of his bachelor party either, trust me.”
John noted the odd tone in her voice. “Drunk?”
Alex smiled, “Ha! Drunk? Wasted is a much better term. It was pretty though, my dress was banging, Steph looked pretty. I cried.... It was good.”
John began to talk about when his older brother got married and the bachelor party but Alex was busy reliving Paul’s bachelor party.
****
“I know, I know! I’m sorry I’m late, I had an exam.”
“Just get in your spot, will you kid?,” Vince called out with a laugh from the end of the aisle, turning from his seat.
“Got it,” she answered, standing next to her sister and the rest of the bride’s maids. She kept looking around the room until she saw her two year old sitting on the floor next to the end of the aisle, playing softly with a stuffed bear and throwing it towards the wall. Amy had looked up with a small giggle, making Alex laugh. The priest, obviously annoyed with Alex’s distractions cleared his throat and gave her the evil eye. Alex quietly excused herself, making Paul, Shane, and Paul’s best man Shawn Michael's laugh. Alex looked down trying her best not to upset her parents and sister anymore, winking at the guys before pulling on a straight face.
Meanwhile, across from her, Dave felt his heart beat a little faster as he watched her fidget. She was a restless 20 year old, short, big smile. She wasn’t looking at him, standing next to her brother. He attention was on the little girl playing to the side, watching her play with loving eyes. Finally her eyes caught his and she had him. Even when she looked away, all he could do was stare.
When the rehearsal was officially over and the priest had given Alex one last look, Alex was the first to speak out. “Baby Buggy!”
Amy reacted accordingly, holding up her arms and running to her mother, “Momma!”
Alex walked to her, picking her up quickly and covering her little face with kisses. “I missed you hunny bear. You were good?”
Amy nodded, burying her face in Alex’s neck.
“Good, that’s my bug. Shawn you arse, come here and gimmie a kiss.”
Shawn laughed, walking away from Paul and wrapping his arms around Alex and Amy, pressing his lips against her cheek. “How have my girls been, huh?”
“Drowning in school work and toys.”
“Nothing new then? Tell me you’re still waiting for me to sweep you off those tiny feet of yours.”
Alex couldn’t help turn beet red, pushing his chest with a laugh. “Shut up Shawn, you’re not breaking my heart any time soon jerk.”
Paul was laughing as he approached her, kissing the top of Amy’s head and then Alex’s. “So please tell me you are coming tonight.”
“I’ll be the only girl Paul. I also technically can’t drink.”
Paul and Shawn laughed, Dave approaching quietly. Paul noticed Stephanie looking over and he talked quietly again. “You have tits and you’re with me. I doubt they won’t give you a couple beers. Hell, the chicks will be all over you. Strippers love girl customers.”
Alex shushed him, kissing Amy’s head and then sending her off in Linda’s direction. “Not in front of the kid will ya? And yes strippers love tits. Who doesn’t? Look, I told my mom to watch Amy and not tell Dad or Stephanie but I swear if you or Shane spill to them I went and I get hell I’m giving you hell.”
“Deal. Oh,” Paul said, motioning to Dave, “This is the guy who will be the champ some day. Dave meet Alex.”
Alex felt her heart flutter a bit again, the same way it had when their eyes locked during the rehearsal. She bit down on her lower lip, uneasy and confused as to what to do. Dave was feeling the same way. The way she bit her lip was far from giving him the impression she was nervous. It was the sexiest thing he’d seen in a while. She held out her hand, a gesture very unlike her and a sign to both Paul and Shawn that Alex was smitten. Dave hadn’t expected it and he took her hand softly, enjoying the soft feeling of her fingertips.
“Paul told me all about you. Glad you could make it.”
Their hands kept contact, their eyes locked. He spoke but his voice was low, “Paul didn’t say... that you were coming with us.”
She smiled finally letting go, putting her hands in her back pocket, “Let’s not say that too loud. Let’s get through dinner and then we can go have some fun huh? Exams are the dumbest shit ever.”
~~~~
The dinner was torture for Alex. She was scolded for being late, bothered to dye her hair- which recently she’d dyed the lower half bright red- one color before the wedding. After a million questions from Stephanie and Vince as to why she needed Linda to watch Amy she was happy to be out.
“Alex come here.”
“I’m not two Paul, you don’t need to hold my hand when I cross the street either.”
Everyone laughed, watching Paul wrap his arm around Alex’s waist, “Just do it for me will ya kid?”
“Shane!”
Shane laughed, walking behind then, “Shoot sis.”
“Tell Paul to stop treating me like a two year old will you?”
“But you ARE a two year old to me my darling sister.”
The look on Alex’s face made everyone laugh, a look of utter annoyance. “Look assholes, I’ll have that limo driver take me the fuck home if yall continue the way you do. I have a little critter back at home that would LOVE to see me.”
Paul kissed the top of Alex head, pulling her past the the bouncer. The second she walked into the strip club she fell in love. She’d wanted to go to one since her 18th birthday but her priorities didn’t really give her the time.
Eventually everyone was drunk and acting a tad bit rowdy. Alex held a 20 dollar bill in her teeth, holding it out for a stripper to grab with her chest. After she released the bill to the half naked girl, Shawn pulled her down onto his lap, pressing some money into her hand, “Tell Dave to get a couple beers, he went to the bar already but we need a couple more.”
She smiled, kissing his cheek getting up, heading towards the bar. “Hey!,” she called out to Dave who turned, a bit thrown off she was talking to him. They hadn’t spoken most of the night, her attention mostly on Paul and Shawn. “Shawn said more beers please.”
“More beers, coming right up,” he said smiling at her, watching her look around the club happily. Finally his nerve came back and spoke loudly over the music, “You seem to be enjoying yourself.”
“You kidding? This fucking rocks. Chicks should walk around naked all day. Especially with tits like they do.” She could see him think of something and before he could ask she laughed and hit his arm. “No, I don’t sleep with girls if that’s what you’re thinking, but I’m woman enough to appreciate a naked girl every now and then.”
Dave turned red, which she was sure he didn’t do that often, “I wasn’t thinking that.”
“Of course not. Anyways, you’re one to talk, you REALLY seemed to like that lap dance.”
“Me? Never. We just don’t tell the wife about it.”
“Ah.... Kids?”
Dave smiled, grabbing the beers from the bartender and walking back with Alex. “Two girls.”
Alex sat back down on Shawn’s lap, across from Dave’s seat, “That’s too cute. Amy is a handful, I can imagine two are.” She grabbed Shawn’s hand who was holding a beer, bringing it to her lips and taking a drink before letting go. “Thank you.”
“Underage hooligan,” Shawn said, biting her arm.
“Old fart.”
“Ouch!” he laughed, bouncing her a little and watching her laugh hysterically.
Paul pulled Alex off of Shawn’s lap and onto his own with a laugh, which covered up his growing jealousy, “Hey there, you can’t have her.”
Shawn raised an eyebrow and spoke as soon as she had turned her attention to Shane, pointing and giggling at her brother getting breast rubbed all over him, “Technically, you’re the last one who can have her.”
“Shut up or I’ll make Dave the best man.” He looked at Dave who was busy watching a stripper throw off her top. “Who said I was the one wanting her anyways?”
Shawn took a swig of his beer, laughing and throwing a bill on the stage, “Man.... I wonder if you’re marrying the right McMahon.”
“What?” Alex had only caught the last word of Shawn’s sentence, “McMahon what?”
“He didn’t say anything Alex, ignore him.” Alex took his advice, giving the girl on stage her full attention while Paul and Shawn gave each other the evil eye.
~~~~
In the hotel room, everyone was drunk and joking around, having brought back some of the girls from the club. Alex felt Shawn’s breathing on her neck as he had his arms wrapped around her waist as they talked to a stripper on the balcony. She could hear all the guys inside with more females talking in loud, drunken voices. There had to be atleast 20 people in the small hotel room but it sounded more like 50. The voices were beginning to blur with one another and she knew sleepiness was kicking in.
“I’m off,” she said suddenly, turning around and wrapping her arms around Shawn’s neck. After a small peck on his cheek she smiled, “Night.”
“No! Too early, you quitter.”
“Except tomorrow Stephanie wants me at the house to be there to help and pictures and makeup.... Being called a quitter by the likes of yall will be the last thing on my mind. Goodnight....”
“Britney Lynn.”
“Yep, pleasure meeting you.”
When she got inside she began quietly saying goodbye to everyone (her favorite goodbyes were Austin and Jericho’s “Good Game” spanks). She put her hand on Dave’s shoulder, kissing his cheek softly. “See you tomorrow, where’s Paul?”
Dave looked up, content with the small kiss, “In the next room, talking and watching ESPN. Party poopers.”
“Eh, it happens. Bye.”
After weaving through the group, she made it to the small living room area, coming up behind Paul and wrapping her arms around his shoulder. He and Shane had been sitting on the small sofa (Shane now passed out). “Dude, don’t tell me my brother passed out.”
“Like an hour ago. One minute we’re talking and the next he’s a goner. He’s gonna wake up with permanent marker all over his face with Jericho and Austin around.”
“Well watch him for me. I’m leaving.”
“Leaving? To where?”
Alex made a face, letting go and grabbing her purse and heading to the door, “Home? Limo is outside waiting.”
Paul got up, grabbing his room key, “I’ll go with you.”
She shook her head, pointing at the door to the bedroom, “Dude get in there and make Austin and Jericho torture Shane, get naked with a stripper, do something fun. Won’t take long to get me home from here, yall picked a way close hotel.”
“It was so Shane could get home faster but I guess he’s not leaving. Hold on.” Paul walked over to the door, opened it and yelled into the room, “We have our first sleeper. Be back, escorting the lady home.” Alex could hear everyone inside holler out their ideas for Shane while Paul closed the door with a laugh. “Let’s go.”
~~~~
She was resting next to him, barely able to keep her eyes open. The beer and liquor had begun to mix, making her droozy. Paul wasn’t any better, rambling on and on about something random. She looked up, watching him talk as she felt his hand rubbing her leg softly. She was busy remembering years before. Alex’s senior year, she’d broken up with her boyfriend the week before prom. After much begging on her part and an explanation of how badly she needed to make her ex jealous, Vince had allowed Paul to escort her. Stephanie was the only one who didn’t know. It’d been their secret, the first of many. As she contemplated how this was just another secret to add to the list it happened. Suddenly, without a warning, as she closed her eyes, she felt his lips pressed to hers. He’d kissed her on the lips before, a peck when no one was around out of affection. But this one was different than those, his lips seemed desperate for hers, although hers were in the same boat. She sat up, reaching for his face and cupping it softly. Paul’s hands were on her hips, pulling her on him to straddle his lap. Alex could feel her skirt pushed up around her waist, partially due to the way she was sitting but Paul was contributing.
“Stop,” she begged in a lazy tone.
“Shut up,” was his answer, picking her up a little and lying her down under his weight. The rest was a blur, a ball of passion and heat held in over years.
~~~~
When she’d woken up she was in her room, barely remembering how she’d gotten there. She remembered in flashes throughout the day, feeling guilt although she wasn’t even sure it had happened. Then, in the church, as she went to go see Paul for a second before the wedding, it came back in a wave. The second she saw him she knew it hadn’t been a dream but a reality and her heart sunk deeply.
“Hey!”
He grabbed her, pulling her into a big hug with a huge smile on his face.
“Paul?”
He let go a little, looking into her face, “What’s wrong? Feeling like shit? I feel like I got plastered with a pile of bricks.”
Alex could barely believe it, “How much DO you remember about last night?”
“Last thing I remember is getting in the limo and we had tequila. Then I remember the guys finding me passed out in the limo. Did you tell the driver to take me back?”
“I... really don’t remember.”
He couldn’t read her, she was blank but there was a sadness he couldn’t explain. “Wait, what’s with the sad face?”
She shook her head, trying to hide the pain. “It’s nothing... promise.”
“I know what it is,” he said with a smile.
She frowned, crossing her arms across her chest. “If you knew then how can you just stand there smiling.”
“Well... I’m nervous too Alex.... I.... Look this doesn’t change anything between us okay? Okay? I’m just marrying Stephanie. You’re still my partner in crime. Promise.”
“Wait,” she began, shaking her head, “are we talking about the same thing?”
“You’re sad because you think you won’t have me around right?”
It was partially the truth she had to admit, standing still in silence with nothing to say except stare. She watched him approach her, her body tensed up as his arms wrapped around her. He sensed it too, although he also got an odd feeling he hadn’t felt before. He attributed it to the cold feet he’d been feeling, the fact that one thing he remembered clearly were Shawn’s words. There was an awkward silence as they embraced. He breathed in deeply and then spoke slowly “I promise, you’ll always have me in your corner okay? Nothing changes that. Okay?”
She stayed quiet, confused beyond belief. He had to be pretty hung over, she might be imagining it, but he was right that she was feeling like she was losing her only ally. The only one who knew her truths.
“Go make my sister happy, okay?”
~~~~
“Care to dance?”
She looked up from the table and it was Dave, hand extended. “Hey, where you been?”
“With the wife and kids. You meet them yet?”
Alex shook her head, taking his hand and standing up. Across the room she could see Paul, talking to his parents. His eyes caught hers for a second. He’d felt a deep pain shot through him looking at her, one he couldn’t explain. But he was soon thinking of other things and Alex was being pulled into Dave’s arms.
She was so small, he thought to himself, feeling back of her dress under his fingertips. He could feel her fingertips rubbing against the back of his neck, soft and warm. He tried to think of something to say but he couldn’t, just holding on and listening to the music.
Her words broke his daze, “I’m assuming the woman who keeps starring at us funny is your wife?”
He followed her eyes to Angela, sternly watching them with her arms folded tightly on her chest. “Oh... yeah I’m sorry.”
“No worries, we can stop if you like.”
In his mind he told himself he wouldn’t like to but instead only shook his head, bringing her closer, “Nah she can handle it.”
Alex felt bad a little, but being in his arms was a small comfort in her state. Suddenly she felt a small tug and looking down found Amy, in her flower girl dress with big tears running down her cheeks. “MOMMY!” She was crying, jumping up and down with her arms over her head and Alex quickly scooped her up.
“Buggie? What happened?”
“Mommy!”
Alex sighed, rubbing her small back and looking up at Dave, “She must be tired.”
Dave, without missing a beat, began to pull Amy out of Alex’s stunned arms and rocking her back and forth. “What this little girl needs is a dance.” With his free arm he pulled Alex back into his arms and began to dance again.
She was in shock. The last person to give Amy this much attention was Paul and here was Dave, whom she barely knew, bringing Amy’s sobs to an end. Amy looked up, studying Dave’s face before giving his cheek a small wet kiss. He laughed, kissing her forehead as she went back to resting her head on his shoulder.
“I’ll pay you to do that everytime she cries,” Alex said, still in shock.
“Screw paying me. I’ll do it for free.”
As the song ended Amy was feeling better, after explaining she’d fallen while playing with the other kids. As they put Amy back down so she could go play, she felt arms grab her and spin her about a couple times.
“Sorry Dave, my dance.”
“Shawn who said I was dancing with you today?”
Shawn laughed, pulling her deeper into the crowd as she looked back at Dave, who smiled before heading over to a annoyed Angela. “I said you were you beauty, now you dance and you dance like you aren’t the saddest girl at the wedding.”
Alex looked at Shawn with wide eyes, “Who said I’m the saddest girl here?”
“Who said I couldn’t tell?” he answered, pulling her closer to him. “He’s a fuck up Alex, for letting a girl like you get away. You’re the better sister anyways.”
She sighed, trying her best not to look pleased to know he considered her better than Stephanie, “Dude... I’m not sad....”
“Liar. Please don’t lie, makes you less amazingly sexy.” He smiled at her sad face, kissing the top of her nose lightly, “Now let’s go do the dirty in a limo somewhere hmm? You know you’re just dying to do something other than stand here and pretend to be happy.”
