Memories
It was almost time.
Kat finished getting ready and sat on the couch, trying to ignore the small not that had formed in her stomach. She didn’t know why she was so nervous, it was just dinner. At least that’s what she told herself.
Part of her refused to believe that Kane would trust her so soon, and couldn’t imagine the real meaning behind the dinner. The other part wondered what he had planned for her, what questions he would ask her when they were alone.
It was killing her.
“I’m not sure...I kind of like Uncle J. better then Uncle Chris...what do you think Edge?” Edge shrugged and popped another Starburst in his mouth. Chris rested his chin on his fists in thought, trying to decide which sounded better as Benoit refused to take any part in it.
Kat turned and looked at Chris, “First off, you’re not even related to me. Second, he’s not my boyfriend and I doubt he’s planning to get me pregnant. Lastly, why do you torture me like this?”
Chris only smiled and stole one of Edge’s Starburst, “It’s just so fun, plus I rather like the idea of being called Uncle J.” Edge glared at Chris as Benoit flipped through the channels, finding nothing good as he turned the television off and settled himself in the chair.
Kat was about to argue with him when there was a nock on the door, everyone falling silent as she went to answer it. She opened the door and was greeted by a very impressive Kane.
A black silk shirt rested under a heavy leather jacket that was covered in flames, matching black jeans trailed down to his heavy boots. A sweet smelling cologne that was in no way unpleasant made her small smile grow as she finished looking him over.
Kane chuckled as she stepped out into the hallway with him, “I take it you’re impressed?” he didn’t need her to answer. Her expression said all he needed to know. He also had to admit; she didn’t look too bad either.
She wore a black shirt with a red demon on the front that laced around to the back of her shirt, black combat style pants covered the tops of her boots as he spotted her trademark spiked bracelet and necklaces. The perfume she chose surprised him, as he didn’t expect her to use any at all, though it didn’t bother him in the slightest.
“Am I that easy to read, or are you just that good?” she raised a brow at him as she asked the question, causing him to smirk and tilt his head in mock thought.
“It would have helped if you hadn’t looked me over so obviously, I take it you don’t date much?” His smirk widened when she blushed and shifted uncomfortably, he had his suspicions and now he knew they were true. Had he just called this a date?
Kat hesitated before responding, ”Tell you the truth, I’ve never been on a date...so no, can’t say that I do.” Did he really consider this a date, or was he trying to unnerve her like he always loved doing? No, it was only dinner between two friends. It had to be.
Kane put his arm around her. “Then lets get going so Edge and Chris can stop listening through the door...” they both heard muffled curses as the two had been called out by the big man. Kat rolled her eyes, if she knew Edge and Chris like she thought she did those two would end up trying to follow them and do a little James Bond work, as they liked to call it. Kat and Benoit liked to call it spying.
He took her down the stairs and out to the back parking lot, where a black SUV was waiting for them as the driver stepped out and opened the back door for them. Kat climbed in and Kane was quick to join her, the driver closed the door and went to the drivers seat.
“Since when are you the romantic type?” Kat looked over at Kane who looked taken aback by the question. He was doing all this for her and she was ungrateful, Kane wondered if he was wrong about her.
He shrugged, “Since I have a reason to be, you make it sound like it’s bad.” His expression hardened as he looked at her, he wasn’t going to do all this and have her throw it back in his face. It wasn’t an actual date by his standards, but he was still doing this for her and he wanted it to work out. He needed it to work out.
She only shook her head and smiled, “Not at all, just never thought you had a romantic side. It’s kind of nice actually.” He seemed to ease up a bit and she turned to look out the window. He was glad she couldn’t see the first genuine smile he showed in a long time.
They rode the rest of the way in silence, coming to a stop near a rather impressive nightclub as the door opened. Kane stepped out and offered Kat a hand that she gladly took, quickly joining his side. She looked at the club with a grin, apparently approving his selection as they walked towards the entrance.
A bouncer greeted them and asked for the name reservation, which came as a quick reply. “Kane.” The bouncer looked down the list and nodded, leaving another man to take over his spot while the two were taken to a private area and seated.
The atmosphere was to Kats liking, dark with plenty of strobe lights and plenty of loud music. They were given menus and asked what they wanted to drink, which was a good question and Kat didn’t have an answer. She didn’t need one.
“Two beers, dark, in the bottle preferably.” Kane seemed to know exactly what he was doing so Kat flipped the menu over and looked at the long list of dishes. Kane set the menu down; already knowing what he was going to order while Kat continued searching through the list.
“What do you think?’ he watched her as she finally chose a dish and put the menu down, taking another look around the place with a pleased nod. Their drinks came and he took his beer as it was handed to him, taking a long pull from the bottle as Kat was soon to follow.
The waiter took asked for their orders as Kane was first to reply, “Steak, medium-rare. Kat?” he looked to her as she handed the waiter their menus.
“Stir-fry sounds good to me.” The waiter took the menus from her and nodded, walking away and leaving the two to themselves as they waited. Kat took another drink from the bottle, satisfied that the beer wasn’t too bitter and slid down easy.
Kane looked about the crowd and glanced lightly at Kat, “Not much is known about you Kat...care to tell a bit about yourself?” he turned to face her fully and she shrugged, resting her arms on the top of the table.
“Where to start...” she was trying to dodge the question a bit as she didn’t want to explain how she came into the WWE business, though she doubt she could dodge it forever. He seemed to see right through her.
“How about why you joined, seems like a good place to me” He was curious as to why he had never seen her around before, or even heard of her until the day she filled in as the stunt double. Eric had told him she had been with the company for quite a while, working partially on the pyrotechnics and editing.
Kat bit her lip nervously and held her beer on one hand before starting, “A friend of mine helped me join. He knew I was decent with electronics and talked to some people to see if they had a spot for me. They did. I was only eighteen at the time, so I had a bit more to learn before I got to handle any of the big stuff...they still don’t trust me with the pyros, I tend to make the explosions bigger then necessary” she didn’t look at him fully and hoped he would be satisfied with her answer.
He couldn’t believe she had been working in the business for three years and he hadn’t ever noticed her. Something about it bugged him, and he needed to get an answer.
“Your parents didn’t have a problem with you doing this? I find it a bit hard to believe that they wouldn’t.” The reaction was one he didn’t expect, she grew more nervous by the second as she seemed to be searching for the best way to word her answer.
She looked at him and sighed, “They couldn’t do a thing to stop me even if they wanted to. If they could, I’m sure they would have tried.” Kat took a small sip of her beer before continuing, “I was adopted, and a small part of that always bothered me and put a strain on things. When I was seventeen my real parents came calling, said they wanted to get to know their real daughter...” she wished he’d never ask about them, it wasn’t something she liked to think about. Not these memories.
Kat snorted and shook her head, “Should have known right then that things didn’t seem right, but part of me wanted to know my real parents. At first things were pretty cool, they’d pick me up and take me somewhere. Like nothing had ever happened, they had never given me away.”
“Yet part of me still didn’t trust anyone, and that part of me was convinced there was a bigger reason they came around when they did. I did what anyone would have done and hung around them more often in order to find out what was really going on. It wasn’t long before I found what I was searching for...”
Kane narrowed his eyes at her; she had to be lying to him. Kat drained the rest of her beer yet still held onto the bottle, “Turns out they were using me to get some sort of inheritance from their grandfather, they never really cared about me...only the inheritance I would bring. To them I was “The most valuable accident they ever had”...”
He had been called a freak his whole life; that was something even he could deal with. An accident? That was something even he hadn’t been called, not by anyone.
Kat let out a small laugh and closed her eyes, “I wasn’t even supposed to make it to the hospital when I was born...I guess they had a friend who was studying to become a doctor and he agreed to do this home birthing and to...” she sighed and shook her head, “dispose of the mistake they made. I came earlier then expected and they had to go to the hospital...they couldn’t kill me, so why not give me away legally?”
Kane put the pieces together, not liking the results. “When they found out you knew, they tried to get custody over you. Bet they were shocked when they found out you left without a trace...” he could see the anger in her eyes, the reminder that she had been played for a fool by people she trusted.
He knew her pain.
“Seems like neither of our families have much in the way of good intentions...” he looked up at her when she said this, thinking back on the betrayals made by his father and brother. They were more alike then he ever thought.
Kane looked at her curiously, “You know about my...past?” he needed to find out just how much she knew. Two more beers were brought out and placed in front of them, Kane waiting for her to answer.
“Yeah...Katie Vick, your brother and father...Tori and the numerous tag teams...about everything they put in the archives. They wonder why you’ve turned out this way...I don’t.” Kat meet his gaze as his anger started to surface, yet he was careful to control it for now.
Kane clenched his fist, “That I’ve become a heartless monster obsessed with getting revenge? You’re so kind...” his eyes flared dangerously as she looked at him, wanting to know just what she thought of what he had become.
“That you don’t trust anyone...that you’ve become so consumed by rage you can’t climb out of it. I know your world Kane. I live in it.” She matched his same intense stare; they could see the pain in each other’s eyes. All the hatred they felt boiled to the surface and was so strong they fed off each other.
He leaned back in his chair and they both relaxed. Neither one wanted to be reminded of their pasts, forcing them from their minds and focusing on having a good time. Their food came and both ate in silence, at least until Kat’s curiosity got the better of her.
“Would you ever be willing to go into another tag team?” the question caught Kane off guard as he ignore the piece of steak he was about to eat. He thought about it for a moment and shrugged.
“Who would be willing to team up with a freak like me?” Kane at the piece of steak he had abandoned moments before and chased it down with his beer. Why would anyone want to team up with him?
Kat stabbed at her food before answering, “I would...one freak deserves another.” She put her fork down after she had her fill and looked back at him. It was a long shot, but maybe she could convince the big man to team up with her.
Jericho refused to let her do any matches unless she had a tag team partner waiting backstage for her, not even teaming up with Edge to take on Evolution. He needed to get back with Edge and the only way to do that would be to get another partner, and who better then the Big Red Machine?
She owed it to Undertaker to try.
Kane thought it over; it would be interesting to have a partner again. A shot at the tag team titles somewhat enticed him, yet could they really win them if they teamed up? He still wanted another shot at the Heavyweight Championship, which her friend Benoit currently held.
“Alright, it will be interesting to see where this goes...but I’m still going after the Heavyweight Championship.” He waited for her reaction, which was a challenging grin.
“I’ll be sure to give Benoit the warning, if you think you can prove to be a challenge for him.” Her grin widened when he narrowed his eyes at her in annoyance.
Kane picked up his beer with a smirk and held it in the air, “Oh I’ll be more then a match for him. You’ll be scraping him from the mat when I get done with him.” They clinked their bottle together, accepting the challenge that the other proposed and drank the rest of their beer.
Kat placed the empty bottle back on the table, “Alright, partner, we’ll just see which of you is the better man.” Kane raised a brow and placed his now empty bottle on the table as well, she left such an opening that he had to take it.
“Oh I’m much more of a man then Benoit will ever be, if you’re still in doubt I think a private show of my abilities will change your mind...” He grinned demonically and leaned his arm against the table.
She matched his grin and knew he was messing with her; she wasn’t going to let him get away with it. “I don’t know about that, you look big enough...but size isn’t everything, you better have the skill to back it up.”
He didn’t expect her to play along, and thought he would have a bit more fun with her. “My skills would leave you speechless, I’m just not sure if you could handle them without passing out on me.” He threw her a challenging smirk and she leaned forward as if daring him to make good on his offer.
“I think I’d surprise you with how much endurance I can have at times.” She chuckled when he leaned closer and stared her down, trying to get her to admit she wouldn’t last yet she wasn’t going to give in to his intimidation.
Kane wasn’t sure if either of them was joking anymore, yet it had gotten interesting and he persisted, “Then why dont we see just how much endurance you have...” His gaze became more piercing as he tried to see what was going on behind her brown eyes.
Kat kept her emotions hidden and gave a slight nod, “Give me a date and time and we’ll see just how much of a man you are, unless you don’t think you can handle it.” She inwardly hoped she knew what she was doing; somehow a challenge always got the better of her.
He backed up and nodded in agreement, “Alright. Since you think you can handle me, we’ll just see how far this will go.” Kane didn’t know if she was going to go through with it, yet the fire in her eyes told him she wasn’t about to back down.
The bill came as their plates were taken away; Kane took out his wallet and placed the amount on the tray with a small tip. Kat stood up and he was reminded of one more thing as he reached down beside his chair.
“Think fast.” She looked up just in time to catch her leather jacket as he hurled it at her. She looked from the jacket back to him as he was putting on his own, wondering how and when he got it.
Kane headed for the exit and Kat followed him deciding not to ask, thankful that it had been returned to her. They went out and found the SUV waiting for them yet again, and wasted no time in climbing in the back and settling down.
It was too late for either of them to spot the figure watching them closely, knowing that this relationship couldn’t be allowed to continue any further.
The ride back was just as silent as the ride there, not wanting to talk and instead let their food digest. It wasn’t long before they were back at the hotel and at the door to Kats room.
“Thanks for dinner Kane, it was great...and you somehow got my jacket back, which makes it even better.” She smiled at him and fished around for the key in her pocket, not noticing Kane moving closer to her.
He lifted her chin up so she met his gaze, “Anytime...partner.” He brushed his lips against hers and she reacted instantly by moving into his kiss. She wanted it to last forever and almost protested when he ended it.
“I’m sure Edge and Jericho are driving Benoit mad, you better go and save him so I can kill him in our next match.” Kane smiled as she rolled her eyes with a smirk and turned to shove the key in and open the door, only to have it hit something and keep her from opening it any further.
Kat peered in and looked down at the base of the door to see Chris and Edge passed out in front of it, undoubtedly losing to lack of sleep while they waited for her to come home. Figures.
She sighed and nudged them with her foot, “Would you two move your carcasses away from the door?” Kane chuckled behind her as the two were quick to obey, waiting anxiously to ask her anything and everything about her date with the Big Red Machine.
Kane strode toward his door and watched her get dragged in by Edge and Chris as they shut their door behind them. It had gone well, and he knew he could at least trust her. If things continued this way, he might just get what he truly wants.
He grinned evilly to himself as he opened his door and walked into his pitch-black room. He was going to make damn sure he got what he wanted, one way or the other.
Nothing was going to stop him.
