Chapter Eleven: Disasters Events
They didn’t sleep at all, just laid there in Aly’s queen sized bed all night, Pete’s arm wrapped around her waist pulling Maddie as close to him as he could. His left hand and her right hand were clasped together on his stomach neither had wanted to let go. The sun had been up for quite some time but both were afraid to move, to face the beginning of a day with out Aly there. Pete’s phone had rang all night, mostly his friends that were out of state wondering what was going on, trying to get as many updates on the situation as possible but each call only succeed in braking Pete down time and time again, after his phone call with Ryan Ross two hours ago Maddie was done playing nice, she turned his phone off ignoring all of his protests; telling him that they’ll call Patrick or Joe if they’re that desperate for information.
“Do you think she’s ok?” It’s the same thing Maddie had been thinking to herself, almost like Pete had plucked it from her mind.
“What do you think Pete? I think that you would be the first person to know if there was something wrong. You would feel it, in every bone of your body you would feel something if she wasn’t.” Maddie was trying to make Pete talk because he had become slightly detached from the whole situation.
“I feel pain, but it’s mostly because I know she’s scared and that she just wants to be here. I promised her Maddie, I promised her that Hannah wouldn’t take her away ever again.” Pete was losing the control that he was fighting so hard to hold on to. Maddie pulled herself up; sitting with her back against the wall she pulled Pete’s head into her lap.
“We both did but we are going to find her. I swear to you, she will be back here before you know it.” Maddie hoped that the things she was saying weren’t empty promises, that some how Aly would come back to Pete and her. Falling for the child is a big no-no in the nanny rule book. Maddie couldn’t help but to love Aly, no one could. Running her fingers through his hair she could feel his body slip into a tense sleep, she knew that there was nothing she could do to help him and that tore her apart, seeing Pete so defeated was unusual and scary.

Pete had been sleeping for two hours but Maddie had rejoined the people scattered throughout the house finding her two best friends in the living room with Gabe, Ryland, Patrick and Joe. She walked towards them slowly and smiled.
“Hey, I’m sorry I didn’t call you last night.” Before they could answer she turned towards Patrick. “He fell asleep finally but I don’t know how long he’ll be able to hold it together. Aly’s become his everything, I mean; well you know what I mean.”
“Aly’s become everyone’s whole world. She’s Pete’s daughter but she’s means more to us then anything.” Patrick smiled as Maddie turned back towards her friends. Trista saw Maddie trying to keep her this isn’t affecting me at all façade on but failing quite miserably, she excused herself and her friends pulling them into the same room that Maddie had slipped away with Pete into the day before. After the door closed, Maddie lost it, she stopped trying to be strong, she stopped pretending like she knew that everything was going to be ok and she stopped ignoring the intense worry she felt. Brylee and Trista were both a little more than shocked to see the girl that had locked so many emotions away come back. The girl crying on the floor was the Maddie they knew before the Tonya accident, this was the girl they had known since kindergarten. They knew nothing they could say would help so they did the next best thing, sat on the floor next to her Brylee put her arms around her and let her cry on her shoulder as Trista rubbed her back.
“I’m sorry, oh god, I’m sorry.” Maddie pulled back after a couple of minutes, “I didn’t mean to lose it. I just couldn’t stop the tears from coming, maybe that shrink was right, I get to emotionally attached to the little girls I nanny for, I let my self fall in love with them.” Trista and Brylee shook there heads, both saw Maddie trying to go back, trying to become the colder less intimate Maddie.
“Maddie, everyone deserves to brake down sometime, you’ve been with Pete all night trying to help him stay together and now it was your turn to cry.” Maddie nodded, wiped the tears with her fingers and got up on her feet deciding that she didn’t want to cry anymore. As she was opening the door to the family room she saw Pete walking down the stairs, he looked confused and a little lost, locking eyes with him she smiled. Turning to walk up to him there was knock at the front door, looking around Maddie saw she was the closest to it sighing she turned and pulled it open expecting to see a reporter or another family member but instead she saw the small little girl that they had been worried about all night. Before she could say anything, the little girl was in her arms and she was closing the door turning around to face Pete.
“Oh God, Aly,” Pete ran down the stairs and when he got close enough Aly moved from Maddie to him faster then either had realized. “Where have you been?” Aly didn’t respond to his question only squeezed tighter, “Was it Hannah baby?” Aly nodded her head slightly and started crying. “Where is she? Where did she go?”
“I don’t know she left me down the street and said something about how she couldn’t believe she got herself tricked into doing this by some girl. Daddy she isn’t coming back this time is she?” Pete’s eyes met Maddie’s, he handed his precious girl back to her and moved to the living room where every one was at, telling them that Aly was home and that he needed to speak with the cops alone. This time around the cops were more than willing to cooperate with Pete and to believe the words he said, calling in to the station they had people searching for Hannah before Pete had barely gotten the whole explanation out. While he was talking to the cops Aly was being passed from Uncle to Uncle and even to Brylee and Trista who both made her laugh. She was almost asleep when Maddie had her safely back in her own arms still awaiting Pete to come back. It had been a good chunk of time before he walked back into the foyer with the two police officers; he smiled slightly at the sight of Maddie holding Aly in her arms, he thanked the officers as they prepared themselves to leave and closed the door behind them when they did. Making his way back to Maddie and Aly, he grabbed Maddie’s free hand and put his other hand on Aly’s back rubbing in small circles, most of his friends had realized that he would want some space and told them they would call or come back around in a couple of days only Joe, Andy, Patrick, Gabe, Ryland and Vicky-T staying behind. Trista and Brylee had both stayed also mostly because they wanted to stay close to Maddie but the bonus of Patrick and Gabe staying was another reason. After the last person had left Pete let out a sigh of relief but before he could say anything they heard the door open and shut again.
“What the hell is going on?” Danielle flipped her newly highlighted hair over her shoulder staring at Maddie and Pete’s interlaced fingers. “Is this why you’re breaking up with me? Because you think you’ve fallen for the nanny? Isn’t that just poetic, you want that white trash over my class? I thought we were going to talk tomorrow, see if we could get back on track. I just came to get some of my stuff for tonight.”
Pete went to say something but before he could he had a sleeping Aly in his arms and one pissed off Maddie in front of him. “White trash? You’re kidding right? I have more class in my pinkie then you do in your whole body, I also have the ability to act and function like a normal human being. I don’t have to fake my emotions and I certainly don’t have to answer to you. Do you even know what’s been going on? Do you know that Aly was gone for 24 hours? Or were you too busy getting your hair and nails done to actually care?”
“Yes, I knew you stupid nosey bitch.” Danielle looked as surprised about the way she answered the question as everyone else.
“How do you know? No one called you to tell you.” Pete was intrigued by her answer.
“It’s your fault you know,” Danielle was staring at Maddie, “you weren’t here to protect her and her mom got her again.”
“How dare you, you don’t know me. You don’t know who I am or what I’ve experienced and you certainly couldn’t imagine any of it so don’t blame me.” Maddie thought about what Danielle said and something didn’t seem right. “How did you know I wasn’t here and how did you know her mom took her?” Maddie was beginning to put the puzzle together, remembering the phone call Pete had with Danielle as Aly was taken by her mother and then the thing Aly heard Hannah say before she let her out of the car. “You did this, didn’t you?”
“I wouldn’t have had to if you had just kept your nose out of everyone else’s business. If you hadn’t become the nanny and got emotionally attached to your work then none of this would have happened. I would have convinced Pete by now to send the stupid girl off to some kind of year round boarding school. And at this moment Pete and I would probably be planning our wedding. The pain that little girl went through is your fault and just like your last job, Tonya right? She died because you let her out of the house without your protection, you were probably to lazy to get her from the bus stop. It’s entirely your fault. You definitely shouldn’t be taking care of children. Pete…” before Danielle could actually talk to him Maddie had lost her temper and sucker punched her directly in the face; hitting her jaw so hard that she went down faster then a balloon that had run out of air.
“You did this because of me? Because I came too close to ruining your life so in turn you almost ruined a little girl’s life? How did you think that you were going to get away with it? Pete was just going to forget that his daughter was missing, decide to lower his standards even more by marrying you and have children with you?” Maddie was standing over Danielle trying desperately not to hit the other woman again. “You disgust me. You put yourself before everyone and everything, that’s why you always loose. You need to learn how to respect other people’s wants and needs.” Maddie walked back towards her friends, looking at Pete.
“Danielle you need to leave.” The calmness in his voice chilled every person in the room down to the bone. “You need to get out of my house before I rip you apart, limb from limb. What you did was sick and twisted and for your own good I hope you learn something from this. That life isn’t going to always conform to what you want it to be, that you need to grow up and do it fast.” Pete opened the door for her and as she walked out he couldn’t help but to slam the door extra hard before she was completely out, muttering under his breath, “Good Riddance.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Danielle’s words had been playing over and over in her head for the last two hours, it is my fault. Maddie couldn’t help believing them; she knew that Pete did too. He had been avoiding her, trying to stay away from her. It’s almost like he knows that it’s my fault but doesn’t want to make me feel worse than I do. At this point she had decided, I have to quit. I can’t do this, I need a desk job, a job that has me far away from taking care of children, and now how do I tell Pete and Aly? Not to mention Trista and Bry. Looking up she saw the realization on her two best friends faces, they knew before she even said anything that she was going to leave the job she loved so much. She inquired about Pete to Ryland and Vicky-T who both answered in unison that he was upstairs.
Walking the stairs slowly she memorized the house, the way it looked and the way it felt. Kinda like home. Maddie shook her head, her stomach in knots, she wasn’t sure that this was what she wanted to do but she knew that needed to do it. Falling for Pete only made things worse and since she was pretty sure he didn’t feel the same and that he didn’t trust her anymore he would know this was coming. Knocking on his door she heard him holler for her to enter. She looked at the room, the black and white picture of Danielle now smashed on the floor, how the bed was perfectly made and the sleek look of black and whites smeared through it she turned towards him.
“I’m quitting,” Maddie tried to keep her tears at bay. “I’m sorry there’s no notice but I have to quit and I have to do it today, now before I change my mind or before you change my mind.”
“Maddie, what are talking about?” Pete was shaking his head, more than a little confused. “You can’t quit, do you know what that will do to Aly?”
“Keep her safe? What Danielle said was true, I caused this. Please don’t fight with me, just please understand that I have to do this. I can’t keep pretending.” Maddie covered her face with her hands, her voice cracking slightly, her tears falling silently. “It’s so hard being around you, I love you. I know you can’t say it because it would be a lie, but I do love you. I love you and I love Aly, so much that it hurts to be around you all the time. Aly needs a detached nanny, someone that worries more about her and her needs then about you and what your needs might be.” Maddie placed her hand on his cheek, kissing him on the lips gently. “Let me go Pete. Let me go before I fall so completely and utterly in love with you that I can’t get myself out.” Maddie was almost lying, she was already there. She couldn’t get herself out of love with him even if she had all her memories of him erased, he had become apart of her. “I’ll tell Aly, I’ll make her understand. All you have to do is take care of her, be the father that I know you are. She is all that matters in your life.” Wrapping her arms around him for one last hug she turned and quickly walked out closing the door behind her. Her tears were still silent but her heart and her mind were screaming at her to go back in as she leaned against the door, ignoring them she headed for Aly’s room.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Staring at the little girl who had started to cry in front of her Maddie couldn’t help the tears that came to her eyes. I thought saying goodbye to Pete was hard, this is even harder.
“Aly I need you to try to understand,” Maddie cradled the little girl’s face in her hands, “I know it’s hard.”
“No I don’t want to understand, there is nothing to understand. You’re leaving! That’s not fair! Why do you have to leave?”
“I know it’s not fair to you or to your dad but I have to do this. I know you’re not going to understand but I think that eventually you will. I hope you will.”
“I hate you Maddie!! You made me believe that you were always going to be here and now you’re leaving me. I hate you!” Before Maddie could say anything back Aly jumped off her bed and ran into the adjoined bathroom slamming and locking the door behind her.
“Aly, it’s ok to hate me. But I need you to know that I love you. I am doing this because I feel like it’s the right thing to do. I think that you and your dad will be better off without me in your life.” There was no vocal response but she did hear Aly slamming things down and letting out a frustrated cry. She heard Aly’s bedroom door open, she turned around and faced the man standing at the door.
“You should leave if you haven’t changed your mind. Don’t make it any harder then it has to be, go now and I promise you I will talk to Aly.” Pete’s eyes were cold and darker then she had ever seen them before. He had heard the words she spoke to Aly moments ago, the way she felt about him and Aly, how can she say those things and still leave? I don’t understand. Maddie put her head down, she grabbed the jacket that he had brought for her and walked out the bedroom door. He watched as she walked out willing her with his mind to change her own mind, wanting her to stay with him and Aly. When she didn’t stop not even hesitate he turned back towards the bathroom door. “Aly, baby, Will you come out of the bathroom please?” He heard the lock click and the doorknob turn slowly. He offered his daughter a small smile.
“Daddy, I don’t understand. I just got home and now she’s leaving for good? I thought she cared about me, I thought she wanted to be my mom.” Pete took a deep breath; he knew some of these thoughts were his fault. Aly knew more about his relationship with Maddie then he was willing to admit. He knew that she fell in love with the idea of Maddie becoming her mom and he was more disappointed in himself because had started liking the idea as well.
“Maddie is doing what she thinks is good for all of us, she loves us but that’s why she’s leaving.” Aly scrunched her face up in confusion. “I know baby, it doesn’t make any sense right now but it will in time. Don’t be angry at her, this is my fault also. I let things happen that shouldn’t have.” Seeing her nod she mumbled something that wasn’t for his ears and he smiled. “It is way past your bed time and that means that you need to get ready for sleep.”
“Yea, you’re going to be here tomorrow right?”
“I am not going anywhere; I will be here for you for the rest of your life.” Carrying her into the bathroom he instructed her to brush her teeth and change into her pajamas. After she did he read her a story and tucked her in.
“Good Night Baby.”
“Night Daddy.” With a flip of the switch the room had been plunged into darkness, the only light coming from the small Hemingway shaped night light Maddie had bought Aly last week.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Maddie had barely made all the way home before it had finally sunk in what she had done. Her friends were sleeping so she tried to keep herself from crying until she got into the shower but the moment she spotted a picture of her and Aly she broke down. The tears came as she remembered when the picture had been taken. At the county fair, they both had cotton candy and slurpee’s. She had seen the picture so many times that she had almost forgotten it was there but tonight seeing it made her cry. She could hear her friend emerge from there respective rooms, neither was sure what the hell was going on but both knew it wasn’t good.
“Oh Maddie,” Brylee started talking first, “Maddie what are we going to do with you?”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you up, I know you have to work in the morning go back to sleep.” Maddie wasn’t sure what they were thinking, if they thought she had made the wrong decision but at this point she didn’t care.
“Madds, you’re going to be ok. We don’t agree with you quitting but we respect that you did it for a reason, that you felt it was only right.” Trista looked at Brylee who shrugged, neither could think of anything else to say.
“I fell in love with them. That’s what happened. That’s why I quit. So please stop judging me and maybe stop to think about how hard it was for me to walk away, especially after what just happened to Aly.” Maddie knew her friends were angrier then they let on. “I keep hearing her tell me that she hates me and I hope that she didn’t mean it for my sake but for her sake hope she did. Maybe if she hates me it’ll be easier for them to forget about me, move on ya know?”
“And what about you Maddie? Do you not get to move on?” Brylee knew what Maddie’s response was going to be before she even answered the question.
“I don’t know, I don’t know if I can. No that’s the wrong word. I know I don’t want to move on. I want them. I want them to be my world. But I can’t be there, I can’t be that close but have that boundary also; the nanny boundary.”
“Boundary my ass, Pete broke that boundary when he had sex with you.” Trista was getting angry, “Maddie your being selfish. That little girl needs you and you left her.”
“I know Trista. I know. Alright? I’m being selfish because I don’t want to get hurt again, I don’t want to lose another child. I don’t want to cause problems for another parent. I won’t, I promised myself after Tonya died that I would get out as soon as problems that I was apart of or I caused started occurring. I didn’t though I should have quit that time Pete almost kissed me, none of this would have happened if I had but I didn’t listen to myself. I ignored my promise and she was taken away from Pete again. Now I’m done being the nanny for anyone. I will get a job as some kind of normal receptionist and for the rest of my life I will grin and bear it. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go throw up.” Maddie walked out of the living room before her friends had anytime to respond. Trista looked at Brylee.
“She really meant that didn’t she?” Brylee couldn’t believe the words that came out of Maddie’s mouth.
“Yea she did and I’m pretty sure there’s nothing we can do about it. We have to accept it or at least act like we do.” Both trying to get over how cold Maddie was before she retreated to the bathroom, they both heard Trista’s bedroom door open, looking over they saw Gabe peek his head out.
“Everything ok?” After they both nodded he smiled and continued, “You coming back to bed?” Trista smiled, hugged Brylee and headed back towards her room turning to see Brylee hadn’t moved from her position.
“Everything’s going to turn out ok. Trust me.” Brylee smiled at Trista’s words as she got up and started heading towards her bedroom, it was the only thing they could do.
