“What do you mean you’ve heard news of the head vampire coming this way?” It was not the first thing Chloe wanted to hear as she walked down the small hallway leading to the offices where she was to meet everyone. She had hoped that Jon Walker’s appearance had been the last of her worries. Seems she was wrong yet again.
“How close is he?” Bill’s voice.
“He’s on foot. The best we can figure, he’s no more than a day away.”
Chloe walked into the door and all the eyes in the room turned to her. “I heard it in the hallway, super hearing and all. What are our options, Mr. Walker?”
“Call me Jon, Chloe. I am sorry about earlier, by the way. I tend to be a little overzealous. Family occupation and all.”
“It’s alright, Jon. So what are we looking at?”
“How much weaponry and men do we have? Because the last I saw of the Master, he had over three hundred men with him.” Jon paused for a moment, as if thinking and shook his head. “We’re going to need at least a hundred and fifty people with a large amount of ammo for each person.”
Chloe looked at Bill to answer the question and he shrugged. “We employ nearly three thousand people, but just over a hundred of them are qualified for using a gun. We have warehouses upon warehouses of weapons in the lower levels, but barely a hundred people who can use them.”
Jon seemed to contemplate that for a moment, looking around the room. “What about everyone in here? Who here is not qualified to hunt?”
“I am not, but I can.” Naida had been so silent in the back corner that Chloe hadn’t even noticed her sitting there. When she was noticed, it wasn’t just Chloe who looked shocked. “What? You think the only thing I do in my little cavern is heal? I taught myself how to shoot. I can hit a moving target at a five hundred yards if need be.”
“You, Naida? My innocent little cave dwelling mermaid can shoot a gun?” Bill smiled as if he had known but had wanted her to admit it to him.
“Yes.”
“OK, so there’s Naida and Bill. Who else do we have?” Jon was a persistent bastard and didn’t seem to give anyone a chance to joke around about the kindly Naida being a killer.
“Spencer, Alex, and I are qualified. As are Ray and Nia. We’ve all been hunting and killing since I was born.” Chloe answered for everyone but Brendon, Brianna, and Ryan. She didn’t even know if the three of them were capable of holding a gun, nevertheless shooting one.
Brendon saved all of them though with his almost maniacal laughter. “Hunt? Are you kidding? He’s a vampire and has been carrying a gun since he was sixteen. Brianna and I are fucking faeries! We learn to shoot bows and arrows when we’re six and move up to guns at ten. We’re all qualified. Otherwise, why in hell would we be here?”
“Is this true, Ryan?” Nia spoke up from between Ryan and Ray. “Can you really shoot? Because the last time I tried to teach you to shoot, you came close to blowing Frank’s finger off.”
Ryan had the grace to look embarrassed and did as he looked down at his hands. “I didn’t shoot his fingers off though, did I? I was told when my father first taught me to shoot that I was to keep my skills secret until they were needed. I purposely aimed at Frank and missed to make you think I couldn’t shoot.”
“So that’s settled. Everyone here can shoot. Now we just need to get the other people and tell them what’s going on and that we need their skills to help save the world.” Jon seemed to be one to take the lead and, for once, Chloe was glad it wasn’t her running this show. She was great at being the leader, but she was only twenty and knew so little about the world around her. Sometimes it made her feel like she should be more advanced in years than she was.
“You heard the man, Bill. We need to get everyone downstairs in one of the warehouses in less than an hour.” Chloe stopped and tilted her head to the side before turning to Nia and Ray. “Nia, Ray, go to where the Contract Valley people are staying and ask if there is anyone who knows how to shoot who is willing to help. It should be a good deal of our people so we might be able to get the hundred and fifty we need.”
Nia and Ray nodded and then headed out the door. Chloe smiled as she heard Nia jokingly yell behind her. “Come on, Ray-Ray, we have a world to save.”
Chloe shook her head and turned back to everyone in the room. Spencer, Brendon, and Brianna were sitting on one side of the table opposite Jon and Bill, who was talking adamantly into a phone. Naida still seemed to be distancing herself in the corner, but Chloe couldn’t help but notice Jon glance in Naida’s direction every few seconds. There would be time for that later.
Bill got off the phone and looked at Chloe. “They’re making the announcement now.”
Just as he finished talking the intercom came on and a slightly frightened female voice began to speak. “Attention all Bryar Enterprise employees: This is an emergency announcement from the CEO, Chloe Bryar. All employees with a shooting license should report to sub-basement three in thirty minutes. All others should leave the premises immediately. Again: all licensed shooters to sub-basement three in thirty minutes, all others go home. That is all.”
Noises could be heard all up and down the halls. People were either moving to get their belongings to go home or moving to get their guns and head to the basement. It sounded eerily like a herd of elephants running from a pack of lions.
Chloe sat beside Bill and listened to the chaos and didn’t know what to do. She put her head down and knew that it would be dangerous for them to leave the little room until everyone was gone in case they were trampled.
In the midst of all the running, she heard someone shout and then the door open. Looking up, she couldn’t help but smile wide. She couldn’t fight the girlish urge run through her and, in excitement, got up and threw her arms around her former professor. “Dr. Smith! I had so hoped you were okay.”
“Please, Chloe, call me Rick now. We’re colleagues now, no longer professor and student. And I’m fine. A few scratches, but nothing more. I’m still human, anyway.” He hugged her back and smiled down at her. “I was hoping you made it up here.”
“Rick Smith? Dr. Patrick James Martin Smith?” Spencer stood from where he sat beside Brendon and looked at Rick like he had two heads.
“Yes? Do I know you?” Rick moved a little away from Chloe, looking at Spencer. There was something going on here that Chloe was a little weirded out about.
“Don’t, Spencer. He doesn’t seem to know.” Naida moved up behind Spencer and put her hand on his arm. “Now is not the time.”
“When will be the time to tell him, Naida? I’ve waited twenty years to find him. All I was given was a name. He needs to know.”
“I need to know what?” Rick’s suspicious nature was coming out. The beautiful girl with the long white hair seemed to pour calm off her into the one called Spencer, but why would she need to calm him? What was going on, and how did it involve Rick?
Naida sighed and released Spencer, shaking her head. “Go ahead, but I am not going to be responsible for any repercussions.”
Spencer turned back to Rick and shook his head. “You don’t know, do you? I’m your son. My mother was a water nymph named Salacia Poole.”
“Lacy?” Understanding went across Rick’s face and he stumbled, only to be caught and lowered to a chair by Chloe. “I haven’t seen her in over twenty years. She was the only woman I ever loved. She came to be with her daughter.” He looked at Naida. “Nay …” A nod from Naida confirmed her identity. “You stayed at my house with her for months. I protected you. I fell in love with her.”
“Yes, and then she ran back home to Caspian Poole, Naida’s father, because he threatened to kill both you and the child growing inside her, me.” Spencer was growing angry and Chloe didn’t know if she could take this emotional shit anymore. “Did you ever try to find her, bastard? Did you ever love her as you say you did?”
Rick looked up like he had been slapped. “I spent five years looking for her. It was a constant. Five years on the road. When I realized that I would never find her like that, I would listen to rumors about mermaids or nymphs and then head out to see if it was Lacy. It never was. I never gave up.”
“She’s dead now.” Naida spoke up from the back corner, tears in her eyes. “He killed her before I killed him. I couldn’t let him take Spencer too.”
Spencer turned back to Naida with shock on his face. “What? What do you mean ‘take me’? What are you talking about, Naida?”
Naida fell into her seat, tears running down her eyes. “He told me that if I didn’t do as he said that he would kill you and Mamen. I refused because what he had me do was too horrible to even repeat. He … he tied her up and beat her with a whip. Every time I would be ready to agree, she would yell at me to resist, that I was too good for what he wanted. He used his voice to draw her bleeding to him and then … he killed her.”
“What about me?”
“I still refused and he told me he knew where you were and would get you and show me just what he could do. He was halfway out the door before it hit me and I killed him.”
“It hit you?” Naida nodded, still crying, and Spencer sighed. “How did you kill him, Naida?”
“I drew him with my voice and plunge a knife into his heart.” She spoke quietly, not wanting to admit it.
Spencer sighed in relief and gave her a hug. “It’s okay, Nay. You saved me. I’m sorry to hear about Mamen though.”
“I am sorry as well, Naida.” Rick spoke from the far side of the room, tears threatening to fall from his eyes. “I really did love her.”
“But not your own son?” Spencer turned angry eyes to Rick yet again.
“I swear to you, Spencer, that before today, I knew nothing of your existence.” Anger was beginning to be heard in Rick’s voice and everyone in the room knew something was about to happen.
“How do I know that?”
Everyone’s attention was on Spencer and Rick, so no one saw Naida as she stood and hit Spencer on the back of the head while throwing a needle at Rick. Both of the guys went down for the count and Naida looked up, shaking her head. “I’m so fucking tired of all the emotional shit that’s been flying around here today. They’ll be up before we have to meet downstairs. I’ll meet you all there.”
Without saying anything else, Naida joined the crowd heading to the elevators and disappeared into the mob, leaving everyone a little confused. Jon was the first to speak, shaking his head. “I’m going to go make sure she’s okay. We can have anyone breaking down before the big fight. I’ll see you all in a few.”
Chloe sighed as Jon disappeared into the crowd as well before turning back to the two laying on the floor. “Ryan, Brendon, grab a body and start heading to the basement where we’re all meeting. Brianna, you and I are heading to my apartment to get you some clean clothes. You look like you survived a bombing. And, Bill? You do whatever it is you do.”
Chloe sighed and disappeared into the crowd holding Brianna’s hand. She didn’t know why, but doing something a little girly like giving Brianna knew clothes sounded like it would relieve some of the tension she was feeling right now. Or maybe she just needed a return to the normal life she had lived in high school. Fuck high school, it was never normal anyway.
