Naida and Jeremy walked into the meeting room and everyone’s eyes were automatically drawn to Naida. She stepped behind Jeremy without thinking. “I don’t think I’m going to like this new look too much, Jeremy.”
“Naida, Jeremy, so glad of you two to finally show up. We were just discussing how we were going to deal with the threat of Anthony Iero.” Rick went straight to business, trying to keep everyone’s attention off Naida. “Everyone, before we continue this is Jeremy Davis and my daughter, Princess Naida Walker.”
“Queen Naida Davis, actually.” Naida blushed as Rick turned shocked eyes to her. “Long story, Daddy. It’s why I’m still wearing the stupid crown.”
“OK, so my daughter and son-in-law, apparently.” Rick smiled back at the others. “Any other ideas you might have about the Anthony situation, people?”
Naida and Jeremy looked at each other with a smile. He gestured to Frank and Emelie, moving her to sit beside the dragon. She was a little uncomfortable, but for the most part, his presence was comforting.
She felt a tap on her shoulder and turned, smiling as she realized it was Hayley. She leaned into Naida and whispered. “Hey, Nay. I can call you Nay, right?” Naida nodded with a smile. “Good. Congrats on marrying Jeremy, though be careful with him. He can be a bit of an asshole.” Jeremy hit her playfully. “Anyway. These guys are Josh and Zac Farro. They’re lycans who came with us to help with this crisis.”
Naida smiled and shook the two young boys’ hands. “Nice to meet the two of you. Don’t worry, the meeting will get better. There’s bound to be an argument in a minute about something.”
“Come on, people. One of you has to have some kind of idea about what we can do.” Naida’s attention went back to her father at the annoyed tone in his voice.
A guy in the back row spoke up feebly. “Why don’t we just take all the gun power we have and just shoot him?”
Frank laughed and shook his head. “He’s a fire dragon. Bullets get hot. You shoot him, and you multiply his power.”
A leggy young woman in the back of the room stood up. Her should length black hair was streaked with blue so well that it looked like it could be natural, maybe even was. Her eyes were the blue of ice water and held the same feeling in them as she turned to Frank. “And what makes you such an expert on dragons?”
Frank smiled, but it wasn’t happy, and turned to the girl with red dragon eyes. “This.” He huffed up his cheeks and blew fire over the heads of everyone between him and the young woman.
She took a step to the side, but didn’t duck, shaking her head as the fire resided. “Impressive, but try this on for size.” She blinked and her eyes remained the same vibrant blue, but her pupils were dragon slits. She blew at Frank and the room temperature dropped as a artic ice came from her mouth.
“Nice. I’m guessing that means the streaks are natural?” Naida couldn’t help the curiosity, because of her own new ability of water dragon.
“Yeah. I’ve spent a little too much time in dragon form.”
“What’s you name?” Frank moved her attention back to him.
“Lucifera Hartell. If you call me anything other than Lucy, so help me I will freeze your heart.”
“Fine, Lucy. I’m Frank Iero, and I know a lot about Anthony Iero because he’s my father.”
Lucy frowned. “What the fuck? Where did you come from?”
“Hell.” It was all she was going to get from Frank as he turned around and looked at Rick. “As I was saying, bullets are a bad idea.”
Naida heard Lucy sit down hard and looked back at Rick. She frowned and looked at her hands. “What about water?”
Everyone looked at her like she had sprouted another head. “What did you say, Naida?”
Naida looked up at Frank and shrugged. “What about water? An unlimited supply of water.”
Frank seemed to think about it. “That might work. I don’t know where we would get it from, but we could always try.”
Naida held her breath to keep from laughing, but couldn’t help it and fell out of her chair, laughing hard. Frank was staring at her again and she barely caught her breath. “You’re kidding, right? Tell me you didn’t just tell the mermaid queen that you didn’t know where you could get water?”
Frank blushed and looked at Emelie, who smiled and shrugged. “She does have a point, honey. She is a mermaid and a water dragon. She has the water.”
“But she would have to go to Hell to hit him where he can be hurt, I won’t let her go.” Frank shook his head. “Emelie and I barely escaped. I will not have someone who has never been there, go down there.”
Naida was glad in that moment that she hadn’t gotten back into her seat. She would have fallen out laughing again. She stood and flipped her head over, revealing a burn scar on the back of her neck. “I was branded in the depths of Hell when I was six, Frank. I spent what would amount to four years up here down there. Four hundred thousand years is a long time to get used to that world. I know the layout better than most. Helps to have a father who is Satan’s friend, doesn’t it?”
She flipped her head back over and looked at him, letting him the truth in her eyes. She really didn’t have to as the brand was permanent and had been something she had had for years. Spencer, Rick, and Jon had never known about it, and she was hoping they never would.
She glanced at Jeremy, but he was merely smiling at her. He took her hand and pulled her into his lap, wrapping his arms around her. She realized in that moment that she was shivering, suddenly cold after remembering the warmth of Hell.
“Then I guess she’s going down.” Frank spoke and everyone looked at him.
“What?” Rick stood shocked at the front of the room. “She’s not going to Hell.”
“Yes, I am, Dad. I’ve been there before, I know the people. Who else is going to go? You? You’re human, though you age weird and I’m going to talk to you about that later. Anyway, Frank can’t go because of Emelie and their baby. Alex won’t leave Bill who won’t leave BE. Hayley is too young and I will not have that on my conscious.”
“I’m eighteen!”
“Exactly.”
“I’m coming whether you like it or not, Naida.” Hayley moved to stand in front of Naida, her dragon just below that calm surface.
“No, you’re not. They’re going to need dragons up here who can help if … if something happens to me.”
“Nothing’s going to happen to you, Naida, because I’m going with you.” Spencer walked into the room and held his hand up. “I have been there. I know where he is. You’re not going to get rid of me.”
“Fine, but no one else can go. If I show up with more than one person at my back, Satan will be the one we have to worry about.”
“What does Satan have to do with getting Anthony?” Frank looked confused, as did half the people in the room at the mention of the great leader of the underworld.
“As queen of the mermaids I am inclined to extend a neutral hand to all leaders of all worlds. If I were to go looking for Anthony and not go straight to Satan, were he to find out, all Hell would literally break loose onto the Earth. Wouldn’t want that, would we?”
Everyone was looking at her in horror and shaking their heads. “You’re going to need a lady in waiting.”
Lucy moved through the rows of chairs and stood beside Spencer. “Load him down with a bunch of knives and tell them you feel safer with a demon bodyguard, but that you would much rather have another female around just in case he were to try something.”
Spencer laughed and shook his head. He tapped Naida gently, trying to get the shocked expression off her face. “Come on, Nay, you know you think it’s funny.”
“If we do that, Lucy, we’ll have to get someone who he doesn’t know is blood related to me.”
“How is demon boy related to you?”
“Don’t call me that.”
“What do you want me to call you then? You’re male and you’re a demon. In my eyes, demon boy is about the only thing you should be called.” Lucy’s eyes flashed dragon slits for a moment before it was vanished.
Naida looked at Spencer as he balled his hands into fists, small dark circles appearing on his forehead just below his hairline. She stepped away out of instinct and found Jeremy’s hand. She hadn’t even realized he had stood. She shook her head and pushed him back gently. ‘Not something we want to get into, Jeremy.’
Jeremy looked shocked at the mind to mind contact, but nodded that he understood. He moved back a little with her, grabbing Hayley as she made an attempt to get into the fight. “No, Haze.”
Hayley frowned, but didn’t move as Spencer finally spoke, calming his anger, though the dark circles were still there. “My name is Spencer Smith. I don’t go around calling you dragon chick, so I suggest you have the same respect for me.”
“Whatever.” Lucy turned back to head up the stairs, whispering under her breath. “Dragon boy.”
Naida pulled Jeremy and Hayley to the floor as a chair flew into Lucy, knowing her over more chairs. She turned and growled, a deep rumbling sound, at Spencer who stood with full black horns and blood red demon eyes. “I told you not to call me that.”
Lucy launched herself at Spencer, ripping through him with claws that appeared like magic on her hands. He went down to the ground hard, but slung her over him into the far wall, her claw taking a chunk of his face as she flew over him.
Rick barely moved out of the way as she hit where he had been standing. He managed to call over the chaos of the room. “Everyone human, get out.”
He moved to the door and held it open as all the others filed out of the room. He followed suit with an apologetic smile at Naida. She knew that there were times like not that he hated being him, but she envied him his humanity sometimes.
She shook her head and turned back to the fight, frowning at the amount of blood now all down Lucy’s front. She had missed something in her own revelation about Rick. She moved back some more and found that Hayley, Frank, Josh, and Zac had stayed to ensure that the fight remained where it was.
She flinched as Lucy kicked Spencer hard enough in the stomach to double him over. He coughed and blood splatter on the floor, but he moved his hand and hit her in the jaw, sending her staggering against the podium.
Naida felt Jeremy’s hand tighten and looked at him, frowning at seeing the amber wolf eyes staring back at her. She saw into his mind and found not to struggle against him. He was thinking of the fun the kill would be at the end of this fight. She was going to have to stop it before it got any more out of hand.
She turned back to the fight and found that Spencer had been slashed across the chest with the dragon claws. Lucy stood over him, about to slash that killing blow, when Spencer’s foot came up and hit her in chest, sending her to the ground. It was now Spencer who moved to hit the killing blow, but Josh flew through the air and pinned Spencer to the ground.
“Enough! Don’t you see what you’re doing to everyone else in the room?” His voice was four octaves lower than it had been when Naida first met him, making her believe that it wasn’t his normal voice at all. “Look at them!” He turned Spencer’s head to look at the little group, turning to Lucy to make sure she did the same.
Spencer and Lucy reluctantly looked at the group and frowned at the same time. Naida found herself frowning and looked at those around her. Jeremy had the amber wolf eyes, his teeth were slightly pointed as were his ears. Zac’s eyes were going a deep rich black, more hair on his face and hands than had been there before. Frank and Hayley were staring at the dragon blood on the floor in disgust, but their eyes held something close to longing, like they wished to wrap that rich redness around themselves.
“I didn’t know.” Lucy looked down at her hands. She tried to stand and fell, barely being caught by Josh. “I’ve never met lycanthropes before. I didn’t know.”
“I did.” Spencer lay on the floor in a pool of his own blood, staring up at the ceiling. “I just didn’t know there were any lycanthropes in the room. If I had known, I would have stopped.” He looked over at Lucy. “But don’t ever call me demon boy. I spent years fighting what I was. I had to die and go to Hell and see what real demons were like before I could become the demon I am today. The demon that helps people. Besides, I didn’t choose to be this.”
“What do you mean?” Lucy leaned heavily on Josh, her wounds healing slowly, but visibly.
“Rick is biologically his father. We share the same mother. My father was the mermaid king and had close ties with some of the most powerful warlocks in the world who weren’t the most ethical of people and didn’t mind putting curses on people. Spencer was one of those people because he wasn’t one of the Chosen.” Naida wrapped her arms around herself at the thought of her father and all his “friends”.
“The Chosen?” Frank was the one to respond to that one, looking at Naida in a manner that scared her slightly.
“It is what the elders called the royal family of my people.”
“Do you know who the Chosen are in the whole of preternatural society, Naida?” Frank continued to stare at her, gauging with his eyes whether she understood her not.
“I’m not following, Frank, so I’m guessing that I don’t.”
“The Chosen are an elite group of preternatural creatures who contain more power than most can even imagine. They are usually the minions of Satan.”
“I am no minion of Lucifer!” Naida looked at him and felt that same tugging in her chest she had gotten when saying that name as a child. “My father served him, but I will not.”
“Why do you know his intimate name, Naida? Only his friends call him Lucifer.” Frank was a persistent bastard.
“That’s right!” Lucy picked up on it, but dug herself into a hole with her next comment. “Dad never did let anyone call him by his heavenly name unless he was close with them.”
“Dad?” Josh was the one to look at Lucy weird. “What do you mean ‘dad’?”
Lucy blushed and looked at Frank and Naida. “Oh no, this isn’t about me. This is about Naida being one of the Chosen.”
Frank shook his head. “With that comment, it’s no longer about Naida being Chosen.”
“Fine, so Lucifer is my father. Why do you think my name is Lucifera? He wasn’t very creative in naming his children. Especially the ones he didn’t want. I was too much the kindly child of my mother. And ice? Oh no, if you were his kid it was either fire or nothing. I left because he tried to kill me. I hold no bounds to that … demon.” Lucy spoke the last word with such detestation that Naida flinched.
Everyone turned to Spencer as she spoke the last word and he merely laughed. “So that’s why she hates me! It’s not because I’m a demon, but because her bad daddy was a demon. You need to get out more, Lucy, not all are bad because of one in their species. Look at Chloe. Vampires all over the world are killing and destroying people, but Chloe is fighting to keep humans safe. What about you, Lucy?” He sat up and looked at her. “You, Frank, Hayley, and, to an extent, Naida? Dragons have destroyed and killed for centuries before they found a human form, and yet I didn’t judge you because of that. I know that not all are bad because of one.”
Lucy sighed, looking ashamed of herself, not only because Spencer had no choice in being a demon, but because he was right. Dragons were on Earth far before demons were and had killed billions more than demons could even claim to have killed, and yet Spencer hadn’t judged her. He even seemed friendly with Frank and Hayley.
“I’m sorry, Spencer. I shouldn’t have judged you for my dad’s actions. Can we try this again?”
“Sure, Lucy. I’m sorry as well. I spent the last year in Hell and have learned that if you’re not the first to start the fight, you’re not getting up from it.” Spencer nodded slightly to her and laid his head back on the floor.
Hayley sighed and walked over to Spencer. She looked into his eyes and then back up to Naida. “I think he’s going to need some major healing I can’t do right now. I used up my supply on you earlier.”
“I’m bleeding on you.” Everyone looked at Lucy as she spoke, seemingly off topic, while looking at Josh. She turned and looked at Naida after the comment, frowning hard. “I think I need a doctor.” She paused and then nodded. “Yep. I need a doctor.”
She went limp in Josh’s arms and he merely picked her up gently. “Where’s the infirmary?”
“Technically, I am the infirmary.” Naida sighed and gestured to a large desk in the corner. “Put her on the desk. I’ll get to Spencer in a second.” She smiled at Spencer with a shrug. “Sorry, Spence, but you’re still conscious. That probably means that you’re insides are alright. Though she did a hell of a job on your outsides.”
“That’s alright, Nay. I’ll just lay here and bleed.”
Naida rolled her eyes and walked over to Lucy. She stared down at the young woman’s broken body and frowned. She didn’t have any of her equipment, but her mind told her that she could heal the dragon with just her hands. She wasn’t too sure about that, but the only way to know for sure was to try. Here’s hoping nothing bad happened.
