It took another two days but Matt finally returned to his usual self and went home. Zack went over early for the practice the day after he’d gone home, he found Matt in the garage strumming on a guitar.
“Matty?” Zack walked in and leaned his head on the singer’s shoulder. Matt turned his head and stopped playing for a moment while he looked at Zack.
“I take it you have a question.” He said raising an eyebrow. Zack nodded, “Why do you call me angel?”
Matt seemed to be caught a little off guard by the question, but he regained his composure quickly, “Because,” he whispered running his fingers through Zack’s silky hair, “if there is a heaven, I’ll never get into it, but I’d like to think if there are angels, they’re just like you.”
Zack blushed a little and turned when he felt Jimmy behind him, “If they aren’t I’m not staying.” He said with a smile. Zack reached out a hand toward him and the drummer came forward and wrapped him in a warm hug.
Later that night, after practice and Brian and Johnny had left to go watch a movie and Brian’s house, Zack wandered into the living room looking for Matt. He found the singer stretched out on the couch staring at the ceiling lost in thought. His eyes focused when he felt Zack near and he looked at the guitarist concernedly, “Are you finally going to tell me what’s wrong?” he asked. Zack blushed lightly and nodded, “Actually…its…you.” He squeaked, he peeked at the singer from under his bangs to see his reaction, Matt merely quirked an eyebrow and sat up. He patted the cushion next to him; Zack ignored it and instead climbed into his lap like a child less than half his size. Matt laughed and moved Zack to a more comfortable position, “Now what’s wrong with me?” he nuzzled Zack’s soft hair and waited patiently while Zack gathered his thoughts.
“You…love me?” he started timidly, Matt held him a little tighter but that was his only reaction, “I can feel it, ever since you did…whatever it was. You love me and you’re lonely,” Zack wrinkled his brow as he tried to put his emotions into words.
“Zack,” Matt interrupted, “I do love you, and I would do anything to keep you safe and happy. Go with Jimmy, he loves you; he will love you, more than I ever could. I can feel what you feel too Zacky, I know what he means to you.”
“But,” Zack shook his head violently, “you, you’re so lonely. I can feel it, its like a hole in my heart eating away at me!” he wrapped his arms around Matt’s neck and buried his face in his chest, “No one should be that lonely and you’ve saved me, more times than I can probably remember,”
Matt sighed as the emotional pain rolled off the small guitarist and straight into him, “Zacky, you owe me nothing. I’ve told you over and over again that I will keep you safe no matter what. Love is not something you pay a debt with.” He pulled Zack’s head up from his chest and looked into his bright, pained eyes, “This isn’t getting through to you is it?” he shook his head in despair.
“Angel,” he whispered as Zack hid his face again, “I was born in seventeen hundred forty-nine, I was changed in seventeen hundred seventy-three. That was the day I should have died. If things had gone as they should’ve you would be curled on a couch with Jimmy without any thoughts of being with someone else.”
Zack whimpered and huddled closer to him.
“The loneliness you feel is something of a defense mechanism I rigged for myself centuries ago. You see, when I was changed I didn’t immediately sever my ties with the mortal world like I should have. I clung to my mortal friends and family, craved their companionship, their warmth, everything they were.
In the seventeen hundreds though people didn’t live as long, when I was changed I was considered close to middle aged and the people I loved died quickly. Within the first three decades of my new…life, if that’s what you’ll call it, all of my friends and family were dead. Either old age had wasted them away or disease had taken them slowly and painfully or even famine had drained their bodies; while I stayed healthy and robust they died slowly.” He took a deep breath and continued with his story, Zack stayed quiet on his lap listening intently, “That was the hardest, watching them waste away like that, but I didn’t learn my lesson. I should have fled from mortals, I should have done many things in those early years but I was foolish. Instead of running I stayed and…and I found someone,”
Zack hissed as a bright flash of pain flooded through Matt into him.
“Sorry,” he murmured pressing a soft kiss to his forehead, “but I found someone that I thought I could live with, someone who seemed to make eternity seem like a good thing; and then, like all mortals, they were taken from me.” He shuddered and tried to shield Zack from as much pain as he could. “I grew bitter with their death and I kept the pain of that loss close to my heart as a reminder of what it was like to love a mortal. I kept loneliness close as a sort of punishment for being selfish and staying with mortals. They were both reminders of how easily people could be taken from me and what it was like when they were gone.” He looked down at Zack and ran his fingers through his silken locks.
“My angel, my sweet, sweet angel,” he whispered pressing a light kiss to the top of his head, “The pain will leave, so will the loneliness. Every day I’ve known you, Jimmy, Brian, and Johnny the pain has lessoned, before it was against my will, but now I’ll let it go freely.”
Zack looked up at him with tears glistening in his eyes, “It’ll go away? You’ll be alright? No more pain?” Matt nodded, “Yes, it’ll all go away, you’re all stuck with me until eternity ends.”
Zack smiled and began to relax.
“Now, go to Jimmy, he’s waiting for you.” Matt gently pushed him off his lap; Zack slid off and then turned, he pressed his smooth lips to Matt’s. Then he turned and ran to the doorway where Jimmy was leaning casually; Jimmy looked at Matt with a deep gratitude and held the small guitarist against his chest. Matt smiled at the happiness he felt radiating from Zack and Jimmy and stretched out on the couch again.
He let his mind drift until he was in a half-awake, half-asleep daze and felt the different emotions pouring in from each of his friends. Heated passion, love and lust rippled through him as Brian pressed his lips against Johnny’s body.
Love, need, pain, and a dizzying amount of pleasure from Johnny as the two became one and moved against each other.
Jimmy was a mix of gratitude, love, happiness, and his signature humor that never left him, as he wrapped his arms around Zack’s waist and pulled the guitarist to him.
Pure happiness radiated from Zack as Jimmy softly kissed him for the first time.
