The sunlight hit his eyes and Lars Ulrich woke up before the alarm on his cell phone could go off. Time differences like NY/San Francisco were daunting for most people, but even before he'd spent years touring, Lars hardly slept at all. He was still slightly peeved at having forgotten to close the curtains.
It was still early when he looked at his watch, 8:24am. Of course there was no point in trying to go back to sleep at this point; he'd just take a nap on the plane if he needed it. He was almost glad he'd gotten sick last night and gone to the hotel instead of to the bar with James.
James.
Well, he might as well go wake up the guy already so they could have some breakfast before checking out of the hotel.
Lars got out of bed and went about his routine. Grooming and dressing didn't take long. He went ahead and started packing up his things into the overnight bag he had. When he checked his watch again it was still only 9:12am. Bored and hungry, he headed out of the room and over to James'.
He had the card to James' room because at hotels they give you two copies for some reason and Lars and James always gave each other the extra in case one or the other got locked out. He stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
The bedroom door was closed, but James had left the light on outside in the living room. Lars shut it off and opened the curtains fully to let the sunlight in. He went over to the end table and grabbed the TV remote. As he looked down, he noticed the clothes on the floor; two men's shirts.
He looked over to the bedroom again a little dumbfounded. It was hard to believe James had pulled anyone from the bar. It just wasn't the kind of thing he did anymore. He looked over the shirts again. Neither looked like an undershirt, but he supposed one could be with necessity.
He shrugged and grabbed the remote turning the TV on. The guide channel appeared and Lars changed the channel to MTV3 before throwing the remote on the sofa and heading for the kitchenette. That’s when he noticed two men’s jackets.
This was a little harder to brush off and Lars had to admit James really must have picked someone up. If James really had should Lars do anything about it or should he just leave and go back to his room?
Instead Lars went over to the kitchenette area and started brewing the hotel coffee. James would need it when he woke up regardless while they waited for room service.
Once that was getting made he went back to the jacket on the sofa. He knew it was a girly thing to do, but he justified it by telling himself he needed to know what was going on for the possible press. He started looking through the pockets. He found the business card of the bar and a hotel room key card for a different hotel. There was no indication as to the owner of the jacket.
He went back to the kitchen and waited for the coffee to brew. He anxiously tapped his foot and stared at the bedroom door. There was just no way in his mind that he could imagine James picking up some guy in a bar. There had to be another explanation.
When the coffee was finished he would pour some for James and take it in. Whoever was in there be damned. And admittedly, Lars was curious.
It felt like forever, but it wasn't really so long after that Lars was walking towards the room with James' coffee. He looked at his watch, 9:31am.
The door was unlocked and Lars opened it silently. The lights were on inside as well though dimmed, but the sunlight coming in let him see everything clearly.
There was James, still asleep peacefully. And there was someone snuggled up on him. It was definitely a guy. Lars couldn't see the guy's face as it was turned away from him. All he could say is that the back of the guy looked a lot like Jason Newsted.
Lars sighed and rolled his eyes. Leave it to James to pick up some Jason look-a-like at a NY bar. This at least he could understand.
"Wake up, everyone!" Lars said in a raised voice. "It's a beautiful morning."
James jumped slightly and opened his eyes to look at him.
"Lars?"
"I got your coffee."
The man in James arms jumped as well and turned to face the drummer. Lars looked from James to the stranger and mused on how much the man resembled Jason. However, he hadn't even finished the thought before he realized that it was Jason. His grip on the cup slipped and it started spilling on the floor. Half the cup had spilled before he righted it.
"Jason?"
"Morning, Lars." Jason said neutrally. "How's it going?"
Lars gaping face was comical, but neither man in the bed laughed.
"Jason?" Lars repeated.
"I think we got that part," James said.
"What the hell did you do?" Lars said to James.
"What does it look like I did?" James said.
"Are you okay?" Lars said, and for a second Jason could have sworn he'd been talking to him. "Jason, are you okay?"
Jason blanched. "What? Yeah, I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?"
Lars looked at James.
"I guess this would be a good time to tell you that I told Lars and Kirk about what happened with us before the MTV movie awards," James said.
"Oh," Jason said. It would appear that Lars was concerned, but as to why exactly Jason couldn’t guess.
"How the hell did this happen?" Lars almost screamed. "You weren't drinking again were you James? Cause if you were I’m going to have to tell Kirk and Fran and the album’s coming out and I can’t deal with you starting again right now."
"I didn’t fall off the wagon. I swear, water the whole night."
"He didn’t drink anything, but water," Jason said.
"I gotta piss," James got out of the bed unashamedly naked.
"Yeah me too," Jason said. "I can wait though; you go ahead."
James nodded and went into the bathroom. He pushed the door forward behind him, but it didn't close all the way.
"Dude, I don’t even…I don’t even know where to begin,” Lars started. "Wait ‘til Kirk hears about this he’s going to have a heart attack. I almost had a heart attack coming in here. I mean Holy Fucking Hell, Jason. How the hell did this happen?”
"I'm on my way to Canada.”
“Voivod?”
“Yeah. So I ran into Jerry Cantrell while I was doing something else and we went over to this bar with some other guys from Alice in Chains and Slash was there. We got on stage and started playing..."
“You, Alice in Chains, and Slash?”
“Yeah”
“And then James came onstage…”
"You were playing on stage with James?" Lars interrupted. "At the same time? Did anyone see you? Of course they saw you it was a bar. "
"Yeah, and then when we got off stage Slash took us to his table with him and the Insane Clown Posse and Scott Ian was there..."
"Oh, how's Scott?"
"He's good." Jason nodded.
They could hear James in the bathroom brushing his teeth.
“Wow. Man. Wow. We’re here doing promo for the new album. Have you heard our new single?” Lars asked.
“Yeah. I like it a lot; sounds promising.”
“Yeah, but you know us we had to stop in the middle and go on tour. The walls were closing in, plus it’s kind of like promo for an album. I don’t know why I’m telling you, you know all this stuff already.”
James came back into the room and Jason got up. He grabbed his pants from the floor before heading into the bathroom. He closed the door all the way as to give James and Lars some privacy. Perhaps they didn't have anything private to say to each other, but if they did Jason didn't want to step on their toes.
James started to gather his pants from the floor and put them on. Lars was unusually quiet. He just bopped his head and tapped his foot to the rhythm of the Red Hot Chili Peppers song coming from the living room.
"You don't have anything to say?" James asked. Despite the knowledge that getting Lars started might be bad, James wanted to hear it.
"What are you doing James? What does this mean?" Lars asked. "Was it a one off for old times sake? Or are you starting something?"
"What am I starting? I'm married and I love my wife and children."
"Yeah, but Fran don't mind if it's us. That's what you said she said not that it's ever mattered because we don't have sex with each other you just wanted to fuck Jason..."
"Are you complaining?," James interrupted.
Lars laughed. "No, I’m just saying. She sees it like going off to war and soldier's comforting each other. As long as you're there when the kids and her need you, right? As long as you're not sneaking off when you're back home."
"Yeah, but even though I am going off to war, or tour, Jason's not coming with us," James said. He grabbed what was left of the coffee from Lars' hand and walked past Lars into the living room. He sat down on the sofa.
Lars walked out and sat on the love seat to the right.
"Do you want him to? You wanna just send Rob packing?"
James sighed and leaned his head back onto the sofa. If he was honest there was nothing he wanted more than to do just that. He could clearly see himself back on the road with Jason with the potential he’d just glimpsed of their friendship.
Dont be afraid to show your friends
That you hurt inside inside
Pains part of life dont hide behind your false pride
Its a lie your lie
"We can't do that to Rob." James looked down and stared at the coffee mug in his hand, could already picture himself sending it flying across the room at the television set. Instead he set it down on the coffee table and made his hand into a fist as he took control of himself.
"No, we can't." Lars said. "I'm sorry, James."
James nodded.
“It’s not about money or contracts. Well that’s a big part of it I’m not going to lie to you. But it’s also been seven years. We have a whole new set of fans now who know Rob. And if we ditched Rob then… well, we just screwed over another bass player.”
“I know,” James growled.
“This is Metallica now. James, Lars, Kirk, and Rob.”
“Does that sound right to you?”
Lars sighed. “I can’t remember the last time anything sounded right.”
“I can,” James said. “I just didn’t see it.”
Why did you go away
Too late to tell you how I feel
I want you back but I get real
Jason came out of the bedroom. He'd washed out his mouth with the mouthwash not having any toothbrush here. He'd been thinking about what to do now that morning had come and life was back to what it was again.
"I'll just get my stuff and head out," he said. "It was nice seeing you guys again."
"You sit your ass down there on that sofa," Lars said. Then he visually grimaced before speaking a little gentler. "I mean, please. Please sit down. I'm going to go and have some breakfast and leave you two alone. We got a few hours before we have to be at the airport so just... I don't know work it out."
Lars got up and walked up to Jason and gave him a hug. "It's good to see you."
Jason hugged back. "Yeah, you too."
Lars headed out of the room without looking back at the two of them. He could hear the sound of the sofa accommodating Jason's weight. He shut the door behind him as he left.
The walk to his room next door was short. First he ordered himself some breakfast from room service. He turned on the TV to MTV3.
Then he got to work.
He picked up his cell phone and started working on possible damage control, making calls trying to see if anything about James and Jason's escapades at the bar was starting to circulate. Had anyone seen them get into a cab or go into the hotel room together? Had they done anything out in public?
It didn't matter to Lars either way. Anything could be used as publicity he just needed to know what it was so he could handle it.
If you see me getting mighty
If you see me getting high
Knock me down
I’m not bigger than life
Lars turned down the volume.
For now he hoped his friend was working out whatever it was between him and Jason because Lars was not looking forward to touring with a depressive James.
They'd just gotten use to playing gigs and looking over to see Rob. It had been a sad thing at first no matter how great Rob was. He hoped whatever happened last night didn't set James back a few steps.
