Chapter 10: Photoshoot Surprise
“This is the first time I’ve ever been to an actual photo shoot.” Quinn commented as she followed Gackt into the building that the shoot would take place in. “It makes me a little nervous.” The vampire let out a small chuckle from her comment. “What?” She asked, hearing him chuckle.
“Sorry, you act like I’m going to make you do something really embarrassing.” Gackt said as he tried to hide another chuckle that she caught as she playfully shoved him.
“I can never tell with you, mister. After all, you convinced me to play Twister. In a formal dress no less.” She pointed out.
“Well~ you had fun, didn’t you?” He asked with a chuckle. His mind began to replay the events of the morning when he had made a call to the American woman, asking if she wanted to accompany him to a photo shoot that he’d forgotten about with everything that was happening lately. Quinn had been a bit reluctant to accept at first, still a bit scared from her strange dream and ‘ghost attack’ at the bridal shop. And only after a bit of convincing on the idol’s part, did she finally agree. Allen had also insisited that she attend the shoot. But the American woman knew that despite his good intentions for his friends, her co-worker was enjoying Utada's company.
“That’s not the point.” She blushed prettily, pretending to ignore him as he let out a laugh. They soon reached the large room that was to be used for the shoot. Quinn was quickly introduced to the model, the photographer, and the rest of the crew before the vampire was shoved away from her to change and have hair and make-up done.
“So… did he tell you what the shoot was?” The photographer, Katomi, asked as she introduced herself, her eyes never leaving her camera.
“No. Was he suppose to?” Quinn asked in light confusion. Katomi only shrugged her shoulders. “Eh. Maybeh.” She suddenly looked away from her camera, “OI!! IS MYRA DONE YET?!” There was reply of ‘Five minutes, Turkish!’ causing the young photographer to mutter a small curse, “This is the only thing I hate about photoshoots. Nobody works at a fast enough pace. Is it the same thing for you?”
“Uh…” was Quinn’s reply before she was cut-off by Katomi.
“I really hope this model can perform. I’ve got a head-ache that would make the Universe shudder. Hold this for me, will ya?” She said before she dumped several rolls of film into Quinn’s lap, “Thanks. You know, I’m surprised that Gakuto brought you to let you observe. Usually when he brings a girl in, it’s to have her be a part of the photoshoot. Strange guy, huh?”
Quinn’s cheeks turned bright pink at the thought. “I ...I guess.”
Katomi let out a large laugh, “I like you. So what is it that you do again?” Quinn was unsure how to handle this woman who changed subjects entirely too fast and who seemed to have a habit of throwing things at her assistants when they didn’t set up something right on the set. Before Quinn could answer, Gackt emerged from the make-shift dressing room.
“THANK YOU!! I knew I liked shooting you for a reason!” Katomi cried as she went up to him to give a hug as Quinn took in the sight before her. It was almost like she had stepped back in time to Gackt’s Malice Mizer days. He was dressed in dark-brown breeches and black boots, an off-white poet’s shirt with a corvette with a simple brown over vest and a cream Victorian-style jacket hanging over his arm he made sure his cuffs were buttoned properly; his hair pulled back into a simple yet somehow elegant pony-tail.
“How do I look?” The singer asked to Quinn when he caught her stare.
“I feel like I’ve gone back in time.” She responded before she had a moment to think about it. He let out a laugh, understanding what she meant, as she blushed and mentally cursed her edit button, which seemed to be off for the day. Katomi just patted Quinn on the back in understanding. The good mood stayed as Katomi gave the idol directions and discussed what he needed to keep in mind for the shoot, both juggling ideas around as they did so. Quinn sat in her seat, enjoying the calm and creative mood that had settled over the room, taking in how Gackt’s eyes shone with a bright passion for his work, how he was so adamantly spoke as he bounced ideas off of Katomi. But the good mood was not meant to last.
The moment Myra stepped, or in this case – was wheeled out, Katomi froze. The smile that was messily placed on her face had disappeared into a seemingly flat line; one of her eyes began twitching…
Quinn and Gackt looked over at Myra, their eyes met with a model with heavy diva-like hair wearing a shell-bra to cover her bosom and a giant, red fish tail on her legs, the make-up a little heavy. It wasn’t terrible, it was just slightly shocking about how overly styled she was.
“WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!” Katomi shrieked, her assistants cowering in fear. “DO NONE OF YOU UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT OF ‘NATURAL’?!”
“Uhm…I thought the point of the shoot was to make me stand out…” Myra replied. The assistants looked horrified at Myra standing up to Katomi; Gackt had taken slow steps back to stand next to Quinn who was looking around, trying to figure out why everyone was suddenly terrified of the photographer.
“YOU’RE ALREADY GONNA STAND OUT BECAUSE YOUR LOWER HALF IS A FUCKING FISH! ARE YOU THE ONE WHO DID YOUR MAKE-UP?!” The photographer shouted at the model.
“Yes! I did it while they were putting the tail on me!” The model snapped back at the other woman.
“ARGH--! MASAKI! GET HER BACK INTO MAKE-UP AND REDO THE WHOLE LOOK! NO DIVA HAIR! NO SMOKEY EYES! AND WHY THE HELL IS EVERYONE STANDING AROUND?! FIND SOMETHING TO DO BEFORE I BEAT YOU WITH MY SHOES!!”
The model was hastily pushed back into the room she was previously in as assistants scattered, not wanting to meet the wrath of Katomi’s stiletto heels. “There goes an hour! Fwish~! Out the window!” Katomi sighed as she slumped on the plaster rock in the set. “God, I hate it when models take things into their own hands.”
Quinn debated if she should voice her opinion on the matter. It didn’t seem that Myra meant bad, she just probably wanted to get this thing done and over with. That fish tail did look slightly uncomfortable after all. Gackt seemed to know what she was thinking and gave her a look to keep it to herself, pointing to Katomi’s shoes as emphasis. “Don’t worry too much about. Unlike most days, I actually can stay here as long as you need me.”
Katomi gave him a small smile.“True, but that dumb model can’t.” She shook her head in disappointment, “Remind me to never book her again.” Gackt just nodded. “I’ll remind you.” “Man~ What do we do for another hour?”
“Good question.” Gackt responded, sitting down next the photographer. Quinn soon joined them, sitting in front of the two as they mulled ideas through their heads. Katomi messed with her camera as Gackt checked his cell phone for any messages, occasionally looking at Quinn to see her playing with some of her hair. After ten minutes of sitting there, Quinn looked up only to find Katomi studying her. The photographer’s head would tilt slowly from side to side, her mouth moving, as if she was talking to herself. To be honest, it was a little nerve racking. Quinn glanced to where Gackt was sitting only to remember he had just left to grab something to eat from the buffet that had been set up.
“Uhm…” Quinn’s brain tried to find a polite way of asking why Katomi was staring at her the way she was. ‘I don’t think I felt this nervous when Gakuto was staring at me during the interview…’ Quinn thought to herself as she shifted in her place.
“Mei~! Come over here!” Katomi called to one of her assistants, her arms waving in a similar fashion to a bird flapping its wings. The assistant came over and Katomi started speaking to her in very rapid Chinese as she pulled Quinn over, pointing to various spots on the young woman’s face and turning her head this way and that. “So you wanna do it?” Katomi suddenly said in Japanese, holding Quinn’s head in a slightly awkward position so that way she and the assistant could see Quinn’s profile.
“Sure.” Mei nodded, grinning. “Come with me if you want to live!” She grabbed Quinn by the arm and dragged her off to what was used as Gackt’s room for hair & make-up and wardrobe.
“Matte! What’s going on?! Katomi-san?!” Quinn cried as she tried to see if Gackt was back yet.
“Have fun~!” Katomi cheerfully said, her messy smile returning as she playfully waved good-bye, “Oh~ I’m a bad person . . .!” She said to herself as she watched the young American woman disappear with her best stylist.
Gackt soon returned to find Quinn gone and Katomi smiling her crazy smile. “What are you up to?”
“Nothing much. I’ve just provided entertainment in the form of your beau not too long ago.”
“What?” He asked in shock, suppressing a blush that would have formed from hearing the woman call Kuinnu his lover.
“Don’t worry! She’s in Mei’s hands! If Mei screws up, you can personally fire her. Oh! Myra’s here.” He looked over at the model, whose hair was now more natural, the make-up as well. She looked very nice, but something felt off to him. He wrote it off as his concern for Quinn at the moment. He trusted Katomi and her stylists, but today was one of those days that he didn’t feel comfortable leaving his angel in their hands. She was shy after all, and she didn’t know how to tell them no. “Okay, let’s get started! Mike! Place her ass on the rock if you would! Thank you!”
Soon, Katomi’s camera began clicking and whirling as she took the pictures occasionally stopping to give direction to Gackt and Myra. About half an hour in, Gackt couldn’t truly loose himself in the shoot. They had taken off the shell-shaped bra to make the pictures look more like an old-fashion drawing of a mermaid rather than a Disney version to satisfy Katomi’s creative need, but the idol could tell that she couldn’t dive head first into the pool as well. At the forty-five minute mark, Quinn had been freed from the clutches of Mei. It was roughly thirty seconds after she joined the assistants in the observation of the shoot that Katomi set down her camera and gave a great cry of aggravation.
“WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG?!”
“Huh?” Was Myra’s response.
“WE HAVE NOTHING!! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!” Katomi began flipping through the frames that had been taken and saved on the computer next to her as Gackt abandoned Tyra on the plaster rock to see for himself. “They’re all pretty pictures. And that’s. All. They. Are!”
Gackt sighed as he agreed with the frustrated photographer. “There’s no emotion! No magic! No spark! No connection!” She turned and pointed an accusing finger at the model, “How am I going to get an amazing picture when she’s not giving me anything?!”
“What?!” Myra was obviously pissed, “I’ve been working my ass off!”
“I wish . . .” Gackt muttered as he rubbed his temples, as if trying to will the last forty-five minutes out of existence. “Katomi-san, I can’t do this with her.” He stated as he walked away from the set to grab something to drink.
“WHAT?!” It was Myra who screamed this time. “YOU’RE THE JERK WHO ASKED FOR ME!”
“Technically, it would be Katomi-san that requested you, not me.” It was taking him a lot of will power not to go over there and rip out her throat. How easy it would be, to simply grasp her wind-pipe and pull.
“I NEVER WANTED TO BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE!! HERMES!! WE’RE LEAVING!!” The model shrieked, her poor manger helping her into the wheel-chair to take her over to her dressing room. “I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO INSULTED IN MY LIFE!!”
‘Ya wanna bet?’ Quinn thought to herself. She’d been quiet and ‘suffered’ through the nervous experiences she was going through today, but she had to admit, at least to herself, that Myra woman was really annoying.
Gackt sighed. This was why he hated supermodels. He tried to take deep, even breaths to calm himself before he did anything stupid. A gentle touch on his arm brought his attention to the real world, claiming his attention to Quinn who now stood next to him; her hand resting softly on his arm as her gaze voiced her concern for him. He froze, his eyes never straying from her expertly painted face. The length of her lashes were brought out and exaggerated, the eye shadow natural with a slight tint of blue to compliment her natural irises’, her skin tone perfectly evened out with just the right amount of rouge on her cheek bones, and her lips looked so soft right now... They looked so enticing...
“Gakuto-sama, is everything ok?” Quinn asked gently. She knew that the shoot had to be taking a toll on him somehow.
The wheels in his mind began to turn, building a steady pace with his thoughts. He didn’t hear a single word that either Katomi or the beautiful woman standing before him said; all he could think of was how this photoshoot was not going to waste and how he finally could have photographic evidence that Quinn’s presence wasn’t a dream.
“Gakuto! Are you even paying attention? I said get changed and—“ “Katomi-san!” “What?!” Gackt gently lead Quinn to stand in front of the photographer. “This photoshoot isn’t done yet.”
“What do you mean? In case you have a short-term memory problem, the damn model walked out on us!” The photographer said in frustration.
“And Kuinnu-chan is still here.” The idol said as he pulled Quinn into a hug, his chin resting of the top of her head and gave Katomi a sly smile. Katomi looked at the two with a confused look before her eyes fully settled on Quinn’s face. Slowly, her eyes widened and her messy smile appeared and grew; it was very obvious that the gears were turning in her mind. Quinn glanced up at Gackt, hoping he wasn’t about to make her do something embarrassing.
“She’s still here.” Gackt nodded, now very eager to get back on the set, “Which means…” Katomi grasped Quinn’s hands, the photographer’s eyes bright with hope and joy, “Kuinnu-san!! You’re going to be the most gorgeous mermaid that this world has ever seen!!”
“What?!” Quinn broke away from Gackt’s embrace, jumping away from the two of them, “I-I! I can’t model!”
“That doesn’t matter!” Katomi cheered with great enthusiasm, “You and Gakuto-san have a connection that can’t be hidden or denied! It’s such a passionate love that burns! Just like with the Mermaid Princess and the Prince!”
“Didn’t that story end badly?!” Quinn stuttered out, blushing from Katomi’s words. “Cause this isn’t gonna be anything like the Disney version. The mermaid died at the end of that story!” Her blush only deepened as she felt Gackt taking her hand and giving a gentle smile.
“This one will have a happy ending.” He said, a hidden promise in his words, meant only for her to understand. Quinn stuttered for a few moments, trying to find an ounce of courage to reject the proposal. Though the moment she looked up at Gackt’s eyes, her resolve faltered. The loving gaze took her breath away and before she knew it, she muttered an ‘okay’.
“Oh~! I’m so happy!! You won’t regret it Kuinnu-san! I promise!” Katomi said, happy tears glistening in her eyes as she hugged the young woman. “Takenaga! Get the violet tail prep for Quinn while Mei takes care of hair and make-up!”
Quinn’s blush was out of control now; her face felt like it was on fire. She put her hands on her cheeks, hoping it would calm the fierceness of her blush. She was caught off-guard when she felt Gackt’s arms wrap around her once again.
“Thank you.” He murmured, placing a small kiss high on her cheek before resting his chin atop her head, “You can’t imagine how much this means to me.”
“I still have a feeling that I’ll regret this somehow.” The American girl said her face clearly crimson as Mei came and pulled the girl away from the vampire. The makeup artist said something in Chinese that Quinn couldn’t understand and was forced to follow the other woman.
“Why didn’t you recommend using her sooner?” Katomi asked Gackt once Quinn was gone to be ‘dolled up’, “It’s obvious that there’s something going on between the two of you.”
The vampire merely glanced at the photographer. “Didn’t want to make her uncomfortable.” He said with a shrug.
“That’s a load of bull.” The woman said in a sing-song voice. When he didn’t reply right away, she gave him a questioning glance. His face was serious; she could see he was nervous. “You don’t want anyone to see her?”
Gackt turned his face away from the photographer, mumbling something as he did so. “What was that?” “...The DEARS.” He repeated louder. It took a millisecond for her to understand what he meant. “Oh...” She paused for a moment, thinking about what would happen if Gackt’s legions of fans did find out about Quinn. “...OH!”
“Yeah.” He replied with a small nod. “God, that’s a scary thought right there.” Katomi said.
“Katomi-san... I love her.” The idol confessed softly, sitting down and crossing his arms.
“Can you tell me something I didn’t know?” She said as she sat down next to him, placing one her legs on top the other. He gave her a slightly shocked look, “What? You were expecting me not to notice? I’m sure I’ve told you before, but I’ll tell you again; I’m a photographer. It’s my job to find and capture emotion, even the ones that are hidden deep inside. Trust me Gakuto-san, when you walked in here with her, it was written all over your face.”
“Then why didn’t you say anything? To save her embarrassment?” He asked, running a hand through his hair as he waited for the blonde woman to return so they could continue to shoot.
“Didn’t you hear me earlier? ‘You and Gakuto-san have a connection that can’t be hidden or denied. It’s such a passionate love that burns.’” She chuckled. “If I remember correctly, the shade of red that colored her cheeks would be impossible for any artist to capture properly.”
“There are some days I wish I didn’t know you.”
“Same here, same here.”
“It sounded like you were only teasing her at the time. But still, I –“ He trailed off, seeing Quinn being pushed out in a wheelchair. The girl’s hair was styled to cover her bust, hiding it nicely while the makeup she had on looked entirely natural, yet it also gave her an ‘inhuman’ appearance. The tail she wore was a deep purple, a rice violet color that brought out the gold in her hair perfectly. All he could do was stare; he was certain that he looked like a complete fool at that moment. He couldn’t hear Katomi compliment on Quinn’s appearance, nor the photographer’s words of advice to the nervous girl. His entire mind could only process that Quinn was here, in front of him as if she stepped out of one of his dreams. He was awoken from his daze when he heard Katomi call for Mike to help Quinn onto set. He immediately went to her side and lifted her out of the chair himself.
“G-Gakuto-sama . . .!” The flustered ‘mermaid’ said as he lifted her out of the chair.
“I wouldn’t be a very good prince if I didn’t help my princess, now would I?” he whispered into her ear, causing her to tense up. “Besides, I’m not passing the chance to hold you.” She let out a small gasp as he gave a seductive grin.

First off, for those of you who dont know the original story of The Little Mermaid, the prince married another woman and the mermaid chose to die rather than kill the prince to save herself.
Secondly, curious as to how the photoshoot turned out? Here's a visual, done by Kirika yet again. She makes a good beta and is a great artist. http://kirika-hime.deviantart.com/art/QxG-Mermaid-and-Prince-149252268
