James heard the city long before they actually saw it. Through the trees they heard the low murmur that signaled a large mass of people going about their daily lives and he was struck with a pang of homesickness. Matt dropped back a couple paces so Johnny and Brian could push the bushes and tree branches aside and there they finally saw the city.
Johnny had been right. All the buildings were multi leveled and James was certain the smallest one was still five stories. The stone the buildings were made of gleamed in the fading light and reflected the sun’s rays onto the ground and all the pedestrians below.
The people looked more like some kind of writhing mass, they were everywhere. They’re vehicles slowly inched their way down the streets and others on smaller two wheeled vehicles whizzed past them weaving in and out of the larger vehicles and people. He absolutely loved it.
The light faded a bit more, until the sun’s rays no longer reflected off the buildings and the streets below were dark and Matt quietly told Johnny to go. James felt familiar anxiety well up inside him as the little scout scampered off but he told himself the streets were mostly deserted and that he would be fine.
The Koyra was looking sicker by the minute, he was still awake but his gaze was more fevered than it had been by the river. He jerked his head to the side and said something softly in the musical language James was certain was his native tongue. Matt whipped his head around so fast James thought his neck would snap, “Zack?” he asked quietly, his body was rigid and James felt dread begin to coil in his stomach, “What’d he say?” he asked. Matt didn’t take his eyes off the Koyra, “He asked his father where he was going.” He said tightly.
Zack looked at Matt a little vacantly and again said something in the strangely beautiful language. Matt got up and kneeled in front of him and replied.
“We should just leave him here.” Brian grumbled.
“Fuck off half-wit.” The Koyra barked. James tried to cover his laugh like it was a cough but Brian glared at him nonetheless, “And that’s why we should leave you here. You don’t like us, you’d just as soon turn us over to the Koyra as you would help us.” He growled.
“He’s delirious with fever Brian; he doesn’t know what’s going on.” Matt said calmly. He murmured soothingly to the Koyra and his body relaxed a little.
“Right, now we get to see his true colors.” Brian sneered. Matt didn’t bat an eye, “I’m pretty sure he thinks he’s talking to one of his cousins, or maybe his sister’s boyfriend or maybe both.” He said distractedly. Brian had nothing to say to that and sat started pacing grumbling angrily.
Johnny returned sooner than James had thought he would carrying several bundles of clothing. He dropped one bundle on the ground and tossed the others to them, “I’m pretty sure they’ll fit. They size things oddly here.” He panted. Matt nodded distractedly, “We just need to seem normal from a distance. We can stay in the shadows.” He said as he carefully pulled the Koyra’s jacket and shirt off.
“Is he bad again?” Johnny asked quietly. Matt sighed and nodded, “We need to cool him as soon as we can.”
“I think I know someplace we can go.” Johnny said. Matt glanced at him and nodded for him to continue.
“I saw a place where there were lots of people going in and out; there were plenty of back ways in too. It looks like a dormitory. We can find an empty room and hide there for the night and probably tomorrow.”
“About time we caught a break.” Matt said. He had the Koyra dressed and was now stripping off his own jacket and pants. James held up the rough, blue material Johnny had thrown at him. He was assuming they buttoned and zipped in the front so he stripped down as well. The pants were a heavy material, obviously meant for rough wear and James was thankful he wouldn’t have to worry about mending anything. They were a bit stiff but he could break them in easily enough.
He held up the shirt and started when he found a flaming skull looking back at him, “What in the Gods’ name is this?” he said only a tad disgustedly. Johnny looked over at him, “I don’t know, I just grabbed five shirts and pants.” He said. James scowled at the clothing but quickly put it on when Matt reached down and picked up the Koyra, “Are we ready?” he asked. The other three picked up their packs and he led them down the hill to the city.
The dormitory Johnny led them too was at least a dozen stories high and there was a plethora of people running in and out of the place. Johnny led them to a dark alley between the dormitory and another building; the place stank of garbage and stagnant water. They found an unguarded door to the building and quickly slipped inside. The hallway they found themselves in was fairly well lit, if anyone would turn the corner they would have no problem seeing them.
“All right, where to now?” Brian whispered. Matt jerked his head to the side, “That looks like it might be a stairwell.” He said quietly. The Koyra squirmed in his arms and growled quietly; Matt held him tighter and made the soft purring sound again and he settled almost immediately. “We need to go quickly, his fever and hallucinations are getting worse.” He said urgently. Johnny again led the way to the door and indeed it was a stairwell. The little scout scurried up the steps, pausing every now and then to listen. James looked back at the captain wondering how much of a toll climbing stairs and carrying the Koyra was taking on him. He looked only a little winded.
Johnny stopped on the seventh floor and cautiously opened the door and peeked into the hallway. He gave the all clear and darted down the left side of the hallway, pausing at each door to listen closely. He stopped at the end of the hall and listened a moment longer than he had been, then cautiously raised his hand and gave the door three sharp raps. The other four were still in the stairwell, he backed up toward them. Nothing happened. He gave a short nod and the other four left the stairs and headed for the room.
The room was freezing and it had a funny, almost stale, smell about it. The carpet was a nondescript dark green and the wall paper was atrocious. There were paintings of flowers hanging over the beds.
“Good Gods this is awful.” Brian said looking at the pictures. The captain slipped past him and set the Koyra on one of the beds, the comforter looked like it had been the color scheme for the walls. Dark green, brown, and white each had their own little design but they blurred together to make a complete mess. The walls were white with light brushings of the dark green and a splash of yellow.
“James I need ice.” Matt said snapping him out of his gawking. He looked around the room, searching for the computer activation. He cursed softly when he realized the room was void of anything more technologically sophisticated than a primitive television.
“What about a cold bath?” Johnny said, “There’s gotta be something like that here.”
Matt had the Koyra almost out of his clothes, he briefly looked at Johnny and then around the room, “That would probably work better.” He said nodding. Then he continued his task. Johnny took a step into a dark room on his left, “Lights? On? Lights on? Illumination?” he said softly, he sighed quietly, “Jimmy can you help me find the lights?”
James entered the dark room and started pressing on one side of the wall while he went over the other. He ran his hand across a switch and the lights flickered on, “Gods how primitive is this planet?” he muttered as he looked the switch over. Johnny shrugged and went over to the oval shaped bowl in the floor that took up most of the room in the cramped space. “Now we just have to figure out how it works.” He said. James walked over and stood next to him, “I bet the red means hot and the blue is cold.” He said pointing at another switch on the wall above the bowl. Johnny reached over and pulled it, and then twisted it and water came shooting out of the faucet. But the water wasn’t filling the bowl; it was simply running down the drain.
“Couldn’t make this easy could they?” Johnny muttered. He bent down and pressed on the drain, “Blue is cold, it’s absolutely frigid.” He said with a grimace. He poked at the drain a bit more and sat back on his heels, the water continued to drain out of the bowl.
“Try that knob under the faucet.” James said pointing at a silver circle with a knob. Johnny reached over and pressed, pulled, twisted, and finally flipped and the water began to fill the bowl. Once they were certain the water was staying in the bowl they went out to get Matt.
“Everything’s ready.” Johnny said. Matt was speaking softly to the Koyra and nodded once before carefully slipping his arms under his knees and shoulders and lifting him off the bed.
The Koyra’s skin was flushed with fever and shiny with sweat, his too long hair stuck to his forehead and the side of his face. His breathing was fast and shallow; James guessed his pulse was too. They stepped aside and let Matt through and Johnny followed him back into the tiny room.
“Do you think he’ll make it?” Brian asked lowly. James shrugged, “I don’t know. They’re so different from us I couldn’t tell you.” He said. He heard the Koyra hiss and guessed he was in the freezing water. He gently grabbed Brian’s sleeve and tugged him toward the small room when the water shut off.
Johnny was sitting on the counter watching the Koyra almost worriedly. The captain was on the edge of the bowl making his strange crooning sound. Zack’s breathing was a little slower and his skin not as flushed, he looked like he was finally in a peaceful sleep.
“How long do you think we can stay here?” Brian asked looking around. Matt looked up and shrugged, “I guess until someone walks in and sees us.” He said.
“We’ve still got Api looking for us.” James reminded him. The captain nodded slowly, “True, but how much longer do you think they’ll last? The fever had them half mad two nights ago; honestly I would be surprised if they were still looking for us.” He said.
“Why were you black listed?” Brian said abruptly, “You obviously graduated high in your class and you know what you’re doing. Why would the get rid of someone valuable?”
“Black listed?” Johnny said startled. He looked at James for an explanation, James leaned against the counter next to him, “According the captain everyone in our squad is black listed.” He said scornfully. The captain didn’t bat an eye and instead slipped off the side of the bowl to sit on the floor next to it. He kept his arm draped over the side though so if the Koyra happened to wake up he would know he was still there.
“But why?” Johnny asked quietly.
“Far fetched fantasies. I think he’s feverish too.” Brian snapped. James started when he remembered the bite on the captain’s shoulder, “Are you—”
“No, I feel fine. Nothing but a stiff shoulder.” He said before James could finish.
“Why are you black listed?” Johnny asked the captain, completely ignoring Brian’s outburst. The captain smiled a touch sadly, “I saved Zack.” He said. The room fell silent and the three stared at him.
“You said you were assigned together…” James said trying to work through the problem. Matt took a deep breath, “I said it was a long story.”
“I was originally in the Academy being trained as a General. Since I would be immediately thrust into the middle of the chaos that is Command I was given secret knowledge about the workings of Command.”
“We went to a weapons factory one day with the sergeants and captains and we took a joint tour of the place. At the end of the day the sergeants and captains were dismissed but we in the higher ranks stayed. We were taken beneath the factory, three floors below it actually, and we got a tour of one of our labs. The ones James spoke out against, a Koyra testing lab.” He paused and looked over at the bowl the Koyra was sleeping in before he shook himself and continued.
“It was the worst place I’ve ever been.” He said softly, “The Koyra were kept in cages, cages you wouldn’t even put your dog in. The cages were so small they couldn’t move, the ‘scientists’ would just walk up and stick a needle in them. It wasn’t just soldiers either; there were children in there that couldn’t have been older than four or five, there were elders, and adolescents, every age of Koyra stuffed in these little cages.” He stopped again and the room stayed silent. James could feel his stomach churning and his mouth was dry. He wanted to call the captain a liar and traitor but he knew there had been labs, he had seen the documentation, he knew what he said was true.
“Their eyes were the worst.” Matt continued in a rough whisper, “They didn’t even flinch when they stuck the needles in them, the just stared at the wall. Their eyes were empty, it was like what had made them an individual had fled and the only thing left was the body. Zack was the only one in there that didn’t look completely dead. He would growl whenever someone walked past him, but he was still half dead. It seemed like the growling was something he did without even thinking about it, like he’d been doing it so long it was just his natural reaction to movement.”
“You said I could be tried for treason James for not telling command about the Koyra venom.” He said quietly, “They took one of the smaller Koyra out of her cage, the lab attendants wore heavy armor on their arms, legs, and torso; their suits were scored with scratches and teeth marks. Command has known for awhile that the Koyra are venomous. I wouldn’t be surprised if they know about the transfusion trick for treatment of Koyra bites.”
“She got loose actually, as soon as she was out of her cage all the life came back to her eyes and she bit one of the attendants on the face, she wrestled free of the other one and ran for the door. The killed her before she got it open. The attendant she bit was dead almost as soon as he hit the floor.”
“After that we left pretty quickly. That was the first time in my life I actually looked at a Koyra and saw another living, breathing creature.” He whispered, “Command does a great job of convincing us that they’re just little targets we need to eliminate, we don’t think of them as people. We had to walk past the girl they killed to get out of the lab. Her eyes were a bluish purple and they were as dead as they had been when she was in the cage. No one else seemed to care. The stepped over her or nudged her with their foot as they went out, she wasn’t anything to them, just a target on a screen that had been replaced with a red ‘X’.”
“I went back two nights later and snuck in. I let them out, all of them. As soon as the doors were open the life came back to them and they ran for the door, they didn’t even check to see if it was a trap, they just wanted to get out. Zack was the last one I let out, but he didn’t run for the door like the others. He climbed out and stared at me. At first I thought he was going to bite me but he stayed there by my side.”
“Once the Koyra were out I set it on fire. I burned that hell hole to the ground. Zack stayed with me, even when we got out and were taken into custody he stayed with me. And that’s where he’s been ever since.” He finished softly. James felt like he’d been sucker punched in the stomach. He took a shuddering breath and looked at the captain again, “Why didn’t they just kill you there?” he asked faintly.
“Because they would’ve had to come up with an excuse.” He said nonchalantly, “The public doesn’t know those labs exist; if they did they would hang Command by their nuts.”
“Does Command know where the Koyra home world is?” Johnny asked. Matt shook his head, “No thank the Gods they don’t.”
“Then where…” Brian trailed off, perhaps not wanting to know.
“There are Koyra settlements all over our planet Brian. They’re on the very fringes of civilization. Command knows where they all are and when they’re in need of test subjects they go through and raid them.”
“Zack came to our planet with his parents when he was young; he survived six raids and was caught in the seventh along with his sister and mother. His sister and mother were shipped off to other labs. He was in that cage for almost two years. A record actually, usually they only live a couple months.” Matt explained. Johnny’s cold fingers slipped into James’ hand and squeezed gently. James returned the comforting gesture.
The room was silent for a long time after Matt’s explanation, each lost in their own thoughts. The captain looked like he was asleep and the Koyra was still sleeping soundly. Johnny’s hand stayed firmly in his, but his fingers remained cold.
James shook himself after awhile, “We need to see if anything on this planet is edible.” He said, his voice a little rougher than usual. Johnny looked up at him and nodded slowly, “I can thieve some stuff.” He bit his lip, “What does he eat?” he asked gesturing toward Zack. Matt’s eyes opened and he looked over at Zack, “If you can find anything similar to what we ate in the forest that would be best. Their preferred food is meat but they can eat certain fruits and vegetables.” He said rubbing his eyes. Johnny nodded and gave James’ fingers a squeeze. James gave him a small smile and gently pulled him off the counter, “We’ll see what we can find. Will you be all right with him?” he said. Matt nodded, “Not the first time I’ve taken care of him.” He said with a small smile. James nodded and looked at Brian, “Are you coming?” he asked with an arched eyebrow. Brian thought for a moment then sighed and nodded.
“Be careful.” Matt said as they filed out of the room. James looked back and nodded. Then Johnny opened the door and peeked out and darted into the empty hallway and to the stairwell. James and Brian followed a little slower.
Matt’s POV
As soon as the door closed Zack pulled himself up, “I think you left part of that story out.” He said sleepily. Matt sat up more and moved onto his knees and pressed his lips to Zack’s, “I don’t think they’re quiet ready for that.” He murmured. Zack smiled wickedly and pressed their lips together again and pressed his cool hand against the hot skin of Matt’s neck. The captain groaned and pulled him closer welcoming Zack’s cold tongue into his scorching mouth. Zack tangled his hand in Matt’s short hair as their tongues clashed fiercely.
Zack slowly pulled away from Matt gently tugging his bottom lip with his teeth, “I want you. Right now.” He growled. Matt stood up and pulled his shirt off, Zack stood up too, since he was already naked he made Matt’s undressing more difficult. His lips traced the contours of his muscles and his cooler hands pressed against Matt’s hot stomach and chest making his smooth skin shiver and his back arch. “Gods Zack.” He whimpered. Zack laughed lowly and gently bit one of Matt’s hard nipples. The captain swore and finally pulled his pants off. Zack’s cold hand wrapped around his hot flesh and he swore again and his knees buckled a little.
He sat down on the floor again and stretched out, Zack followed him down and straddled his hips, “Are you gonna last more than a minute here big guy?” he asked coyly sliding his hand up and down Matt’s length. Matt groaned and pushed up into his hand, “Not if you keep doing that.” He panted. Zack took his hand away and replaced it with his mouth. Matt clapped a hand over his mouth to muffle a scream as his hot flesh was swallowed by Zack’s icy throat.
Zack slid his tongue up Matt’s length lightly sucking and squeezing with his lips. Matt’s body shuddered and his back arched more and more as whimpers and screams pushed past his sealed lips again and again. Zack hummed deep in his throat and felt the familiar shudder of Matt’s body and then his mouth was filled with his hot, sweet essence. He pulled off his softening length and sucker hard on his swollen head completely draining him. Matt’s hips bucked up and he groaned helplessly as his cock suffered more of the pleasurable abuse.
Zack finally let him go and nipped Matt’s lips until he sluggishly kissed him back. Zack sat back again and slid his hand over Matt’s soft length gently squeezing as his fingers caressed his flesh; Matt sighed and let his eyes roll back as his length hardened. He sat up after a moment and pulled Zack’s hands to his shoulders and their lips together.
“We probably need to hurry.” Zack whispered. Matt nodded and rolled them over so Zack was pressed to the cool tile floor. Zack’s legs came up around his waist; Matt leaned down and attacked Zack’s mouth again as he pressed his burning flesh into Zack’s cool body.
There was nothing like being inside Zack. His body was almost frigid to their kind and the shock of the cold against his hot flesh nearly sent him over the edge every time. He closed his eyes and toyed with Zack’s tongue more roughly as his hips bucked forward into his tight body. Zack sighed and his cool hands slid up his stomach and across his chest. Cold fingers pinched and twisted his hard nipples; he hissed and his hips jerked forward burying him the rest of the way into his chilled body. Zack moaned his name and arched into him raking his short nails down his arms.
He knew how careful Zack was with him when they had sex, he could easily shred his skin if he lost control for even a second, his bite was paralyzing, and he had strength enough to fracture bones.
Zack let out a growling scream and pushed up hard into Matt, “There! Matt there, Gods, more.” He moaned. Matt pushed into him with more force whimpering and groaning as Zack’s body tightened around him as he slammed into his sweet spot harder and harder. He felt Zack’s body tremble beneath him and around him and thrust hard into him one more time and his cool seed spurted against his stomach as Zack screamed his name. Matt’s body drew tight and he screamed Zack’s name as his fiery essence poured into his cold body.
He pulled out slowly savoring the tightening sensation around his softening member; Zack sighed and pulled him down next to him. They lay together on the floor lightly panting; Zack warming against Matt and Matt cooling against Zack.
“We’ll have to tell them soon enough.” Zack said quietly after a moment. Matt sighed and nuzzled his neck, “How about when you’re truly one hundred percent.”
Zack closed his eyes and relaxed, “M’kay.” He whispered.
Omni POV
They wandered around the backstreets for awhile in the pressing darkness of the alleys until they spotted a promising building. Johnny went ahead of them hugging the shadows and cut out the primitive security system on the back door. He waved them forward and James and Brian snuck into the building behind him.
They found their way to the main floor easily enough and James took the lead. He went over to a batch of green plants and looked them over critically, “We can try a little bit of these and the orange things.” He said at last. Zack grabbed a bundle of the green things and Brian the orange. James himself picked up a leafy ball of green, “Okay, now we need to find someplace that has meat.” He said starting to head for the door.
“Jimmy, let’s look here first.” Johnny said, “I’d rather not go running all over this city at night, we could get lost.”
James thought for a moment then shrugged, “Okay, but we need to hurry.”
They split up and began searching around the building. James found what looked like cleaning supplies and dehydrated food. He grabbed a few boxes of the food reasoning that they would last longer than the fresh greens. Brian’s low whistle had him jogging to the other side of the building to meet him.
Brian and Johnny were standing in front of a large glass case that housed slabs of red meat. James looked everything over and then shrugged, “Meat is meat right?”
Johnny and Brian shrugged too then went to a lower side of the case and hopped over and began fiddling with the back of the case. James hopped over, “Leave that, who knows how long it’s been there. There’s gotta be a freezer or something.” He said heading for the back. Johnny and Brian followed sniffing and looking through things.
He found what he was looking for toward the back, he undid the latch and swung the heavy door open and walked into the chilled room. There were carts of frozen meat all over the place. He grabbed two packages with thick cuts in them and Brian and Johnny followed suit. He looked around for a moment and grabbed one more and then signaled them to move out.
They got back to the dormitory without any problems and snuck back into their room. Matt was asleep on the bed and to his surprise the Koyra was awake and toying with one of the devices in the room.
“You’re awake!” Johnny chirped happily. He darted over and plopped down next to the Koyra wiggling with energy. The Koyra gave him an amused look and continued to fiddle with the machine.
“What are you doing?” Brian asked curiously. Zack looked over at him, “It’s a remote. I think that’s a television.” He said pointing at another bigger device. There was a man on the screen spilling a liquid onto a carpet and cleaning it up with a rag. “There are all kinds of weird stuff on. This species seems to have a fondness for violence and sex.” He said. He stopped what he was doing and James looked at the screen again and saw a massive explosion light up the screen. Zack changed the screens again and there were two males in a ring beating each other with chairs and slamming each other to the ground. An announcer screamed something as one of the men was tossed out of the ring onto a table. The screen changed again, to a more familiar scene, a body on a tray with a hole in its head. Again he flipped the screens, two females somewhere sunny grinding against each other shouting.
He shook his head, “Whatever makes them happy.” He said. Zack shrugged and handed the small device to Johnny, “See if you can find something educational.” He said snickering. Johnny happily took the device and began flipping through the screens. James snorted and went to check the captain.
He gently pressed his fingers against his throat and saw the captain open his eyes, “I’m fine James. Just tired”
Zack snorted and James glanced at him but his face was turned to the television. Matt was looking at him too with a smile on his lips. James looked between them, the captain’s smile said more than words could; they were up to something.
“What?” James asked suspiciously. Matt looked at him and the mischief in his eyes deepened, “Nothing.” He said lightly.
“Bullshit. Johnny gets that look too when he’s up to something. What are you planning?”
“I do not.” The little scout pouted.
“Yes you do. I always know when you’re planning trouble or—” he dropped off as another thought occurred to him.
“Or what?” Brian asked stretching out on the other bed. James ignored him and stared directly at the captain and then deliberately looked at the Koyra and then back at him. Nothing in Matt’s body shifted but his eyes reflected the truth. Little things began to register in his mind; how carefully the captain had put the Koyra in his sleeping chamber, his refusal to leave the Koyra behind when he was starving, and his willingness to be close to someone that should have been a bitter enemy.
“Jimmy, hello-o-o?” Brian said jerking him from his thoughts. James shook his head and looked at the strategist, “What?” he asked faintly.
“What? You left half your thought hanging what were you going to say?” he said rolling his eyes. James looked over at Johnny, the little scout was staring at him too, but he could see the surprise in his eyes. He shook his head minutely, there was a reason they hadn’t been told. Brian would probably have a heart attack. He would let them keep their little secret from Brian awhile longer, until he was used to them. They were going to be on this planet probably until they died, once you were black listed you were dead anyway so they might as well enjoy their lives.
Johnny blinked and nodded once and then went back to flipping through the screens, leaning against Zack and giggling. Zack looked back at him with a small smile, his raven hair fell across his pale face and his glowing eyes caught the light. He was a beautiful creature; James decided he couldn’t rightly deny that.
“What is going on? What are you hiding from me?” Brian asked suspiciously. Matt laughed and sat up and pulled Zack back into his arms and gently pressed their lips together. James heard the breath go out of Brian’s lungs and then a loud ‘thump’ when he rolled off the bed and hit the floor.
