Part 11, The Present
YamaPi was leaving the university campus when he caught sight of someone who looked familiar. The blond hair was the first thing to catch his attention. With gaze narrowed he watched the woman nearing, unsure if it was who he thought it was until she looked up, saw him, and froze. YamaPi hissed in a breath, glancing around, wondering if he had some diplomatic way to escape. When he glanced back at her she was purposefully making her way towards him.
“Shit,” he hissed below his breath. He didn’t want to talk to her. He knew he’d be tempted to ease her pain by telling her the truth, but knew it would defeat the purpose of Tegoshi having done what he had. Since the youngest News member had confessed three weeks ago they had all watched over him and tried to help him move on.
“Yamashita-san,” she said, talking low and giving a small bow. “I’m not going to ask you anything. I’m not going to rant and rave. I just…” She paused, and pain laced her eyes. “I know why he did it. Yuya wouldn’t cheat. He certainly wouldn’t do it that boldly in my classroom. It took me several days to realize that. I had to get past the hurt and anger.”
He blinked, startled. He didn’t know what to say.
She went on. “I would have done it. I would have left Japan and done whatever I had to do to protect him. I’m still leaving Japan because I know being in the same country as the person you love is still a temptation. I just wanted to ask you one favour. Please, please watch over him. I know he must be tearing himself up inside over what he did. I hope he can move on past that. When he does please tell him about this moment? Please tell him I don’t hate him?”
He nodded, unable to say more. He could feel the sadness radiating from her. She bowed her gratitude, and moved on. He glanced over his shoulder to watch her. “When are you leaving?” he asked.
She paused, but did not turn to look at him. “Tomorrow.”
“I’ll tell him day after,” he promised her. She nodded and started walking again. YamaPi sighed and continued on his way home. But their meeting weighed on him all night and next day. He was distracted enough that his partner for his class project smacked him on top of the head with a handful of sheets of paper to get his attention.
“Yamashita-san, I have no idea what your goal is for a grade on this project, but mine just so happens to be an A,” she reprimanded him.
He bowed his head, apologetic. “Sorry.”
She sighed, and pursed her lips. “I’m a good listener,” she softly told him.
Again he bowed. “Thank you, but… it’s something I can’t discuss.”
He spent another night tossing and turning, and by the morning knew he had to unburden himself. He called Tegoshi. “I’ll pick you up so don’t take the train or drive in.”
“Umm, okay?” Tegoshi was feeling rather confused.
“It’s nothing bad,” YamaPi smiled, and for that he was grateful. He didn’t think he could take giving heartbroken Tegoshi bad news after everything he’d been through. At least he would be able to alleviate the younger male’s conscience somewhat. “So I’ll see you soon.”
“Okay.”
YamaPi figured they could stop to get something to eat on the way to work. Traffic was light at the moment so he got to Tegoshi’s faster than he normally would have. The younger male was waiting outside for him, probably nervously, so YamaPi smiled at him. “Hey.”
“Hey,” Tegoshi strapped himself in as they drove off. “So… what’s up?” He was almost afraid to know. The leader of NEWS had a very intense look on his face, and it worried him to see it.
“I saw Dani.”
Tegoshi’s heart halted for several seconds before it sped up fearfully. Dani. He hadn’t heard the name spoken in weeks. Everyone had been very careful around him. Probably not wanting to upset him. They needn’t have bothered. He still thought of her a hundred times a day. He still dreamt of her each night. He would curl up in bed, his arms aching for the remembered feel of her body within them. Sometimes he would wake up as the ghostly scent of her hair teased his nose, only to have cruel reality remind him that he was alone, and he would pull his knees up to hug them and sit with his face pressed into them, and the pain tearing at his chest.
“I was leaving school, and she was coming in. I was going to try to avoid her because I didn’t want to blurt out to her why you’d done it.”
“Thank you,” Tegoshi whispered, unable to make his voice stronger due to the renewed lump of tears choking him.
“She knows, Tesshi.” YamaPi glanced at him briefly, and saw the quizzically wide dark eyes staring at him. “She told me you’d never do that, and not so boldly as with one of her students in her classroom. She wanted me to let you know she forgives you, and she doesn’t hate you. And you don’t have to worry. For you, because she wants to protect you, she left yesterday.”
The tears he’d been unable to shed since the night he confessed to his friends now fell again. He should have known she’d never believe him to be such an ass. It was similar to how he’d known she liked him, and continued to chase after her. She knew he would never cheat on her.
“She wanted me to let you know someday. I told her I’d tell you the day after she left.” YamaPi pulled in to park in front of a store, turning the motor off. “She wants you to forgive yourself, Tesshi.”
Tegoshi nodded, smiling despite the tears. “She’s special,” he whispered. “Someday I hope Dani and I meet up again. Maybe when I’m not so much the future of Johnny’s, and I can finally be Dani’s future.”
YamaPi smiled, nodding. “I hope you do too.” He’d had girlfriends and relationships, but he’d never been in love. He found it difficult to love. There were many reasons behind it, some he didn’t want to admit even to himself so it was daunting, in a way, to see what love has done to his young friend. He believed in love, and he believed what Tegoshi felt was real and honest, but he didn’t believe he would ever love himself. “Hungry? I’ll go in and get us breakfast. I’ll be right back.”
“YamaPi?” Tegoshi wiped his eyes on his sleeve, and then smiled at his mentor and friend. “Thank you. It will still take time to finish healing, but I think it will now take less time.”
He would be okay. It would still take a little time, but he knew he’d move on. And someday he would meet up with Dani again, and he would again make a bid for her heart. As YamaPi went into the store he felt his tears slow, the choking lump of them ease, and he smiled.
The End
(Or is it. A sequel is in the makes right now)
