Half the fun is getting Kelly and Carrie together :) It's cool that you guys are enjoying them getting closer.
Ch 11
Carrie crouched down in front of the door as Matt unlocked it for her. Her friend quickly stepped out of the way while he opened the door, and Carrie grinned when she saw Ace bound out of the house like a rabbit. She swiftly grabbed the dog and went inside. “You weren’t fast enough today, buddy.” Carrie and Matt had developed the little system of keeping Ace from reaching the front yard one morning when they were energized because of way too many cups of coffee.
Matt closed and locked the door while Carrie took Ace out to the back of the house to play around outside. “Something got you excited, Care? Because I know you weren’t that awake before your interview.” Matt chuckled and quickly caught up with his friend, who had decided to stay in and watch Ace through the glass doors. They only caught Ace like that when they were both awake enough to catch the fast, little dog; otherwise, they just tried to get into the house as fast as they could without opening the door very far. “Don’t try to say that you thought Ace was gonna get away.”
Carrie rolled her eyes at the tone of Matt’s voice. She knew what was about to happen, he was about to bring up guys to her. “Actually, the coffee finally kicked in.” Carrie watched Ace run around the backyard for a few moments before she left the room and Matt behind. She didn’t want to talk about Sean. She’d already had to get up early for a radio interview to promote her latest single and upcoming appearance to sing the song. Her studio time for the day had been canceled because of the interview, but luckily, the interview hadn’t been recorded, so she hadn’t needed to get up even earlier to have Tommy and her makeup artist get her ready.
Matt followed Carrie through the house since they needed to go over the final decisions for her flight and hotel reservations. “I don’t know, Care. I think you were just happy to see Ace waiting for you by the door.” He jogged up the steps until he caught up with Carrie, and then he smiled at her. “You know what else would be nice? Having a date already step up for after your promo spot. I’m sure Sean would be free the night you get back, or the one after that.”
Carrie would have pushed Matt if they hadn’t been on the stairs. Her best friend was too hardheaded for his own good. “It doesn’t matter if he’s free or not, I’m still not going out with him. I don’t make you go out with girls I know.”
Matt tried not to laugh as Carrie hurried up the rest of the stairs and went straight to her bedroom. “That’s because I’m with someone. You’re not. What’s so bad about Sean? I mean is there something wrong with him that only girls pick up on?”
Carrie left the door to her room open so that she and Matt could continue to talk, though she was tempted to shut the door in his face. “He’s a nice enough guy, Matt. I just don’t like him. He’s great to hang out with, but I don’t see me and him together. Can’t you just accept that?”
Matt leaned against the doorway while Carrie went around the room and picked out some comfortable clothes to change into for the rest of the day. “How do you know there’s nothing there with him if you don’t even give him a chance? I mean he’s not ugly, he’s not a jackass. What more does a guy need to get to go out with a girl?” He didn’t think that Carrie was being a diva, or too picky, he just didn’t get why Carrie wouldn’t give Sean a shot.
Carrie let out a frustrated sigh and walked away to her bathroom before she could call Matt a jerk. “It would be nice if I was attracted to the guy you’re trying to set me up with.” Carrie ignored the sound of Matt’s laughter as she changed out of the outfit she had put together for the radio interview. She left the clothes in a pile on the floor, and then she quickly pulled on the shorts and t-shirt she had grabbed. “What about the fact that I don’t want to date right now?”
When Carrie exited the bathroom, Matt stepped further into the room and smiled at Carrie so that she could see that he wasn’t upset with her. “Okay, obviously the attraction issue is a big deal. I thought that you did think he was cute because you said that he is cute. I might be your best friend, Care, but I didn’t know that cute meant something else entirely to girls.”
"Don’t be an ass.” Carrie sighed and went back to the bathroom and grabbed her clothes. She liked to have her house clean anyway, but if she could focus on something else while Matt spoke, then so much the better. Carrie went back to her room and threw the outfit with her dirty laundry. “When guys say that a girl is cute, they mean they’d screw her but wouldn’t date her. So don’t talk about how girls have different meanings for words. And before you even joke, no.”
Matt snickered because Carrie knew him too well. “Why do you have to say it like that? You know I wouldn’t seriously suggest that you sleep with Sean and then dump him.” He would have made the joke if Carrie hadn’t taken away his opportunity to say the joke. Now that he could see Carrie and hear her, Matt could see that he had angered his friend. “I just want you to have some fun. I’m not trying to upset you. I don’t want you feeling left out now that Tommy’s dating someone too.”
Of course, Carrie knew that Matt wasn’t pissing her off on purpose, but that didn’t make him any easier to deal with because he was her best friend. “Matt, I would ask you about our friends or your friends if I wanted to date them, but I don’t. I want to work on the album. And I don’t feel like a third, well, fifth wheel. Can we let this whole thing go about me dating?” Carrie didn’t know how she could say her feelings any differently without hurting Matt’s feelings.
“Yeah, you got it.” Matt smiled uncertainly at Carrie until she smiled for him, and then he walked over and hugged her. “I’m sorry. I promise no more trying to hook you up with guys.” He laughed when Carrie smacked his shoulder and called him an ass. “What do you say to us going out shopping? We could make a whole day of it, even go to that pet store you love and pick out a few presents for Ace. I mean he’s already spoiled so what’s a few more- damn, Care!”
Carrie snickered as Matt pretended to be hurt worse than he really was. “Ace is not spoiled. And don’t be a wuss, I didn’t hit you that hard.” She would like to go shopping, mainly since Matt had offered to spend the entire day shopping, but she knew it would be best if they worked out the final details for the next few weeks of her schedule. “How about we get my schedule straight, and then we go out shopping?” Carrie pushed Matt towards the hallway because she wanted to check on Ace before they became too busy. “Don’t forget that we’re all going out the night after I go to Kelly’s party.”
Matt stopped for a second at the reminder, although he resumed his pace when Carrie lightly pushed him to move. He hadn’t forgot that they were supposed to go out with Kelly and her friends before they left, but he hadn’t gotten the impression that Carrie would go to the pop singer’s party. “You’re going to the gay party again?” Matt glanced over his shoulder at Carrie as he started down the stairs, mostly to see if she was joking with him. “Is Tommy going?”
Carrie didn’t see how Tommy factored into her going to Kelly’s party. “If he wants to, he can. Kelly said he was invited to all of her parties.” Carrie frowned when Matt turned his head again and gave her a look. “Tommy may go, or he could go out with his boyfriend Hector. What’s it matter anyway? I can go to the party on my own.” Carrie rolled her eyes and walked past her friend when Matt stopped on the stairs. She jumped the last few steps and waited impatiently for Matt.
“Does Kelly know you’re going to the party?” Matt wasn’t worried about Carrie going to a party on her own, or about other people thinking that she was a lesbian. He walked down the last few steps and ignored the confused look on Carrie’s face. “Does she?”
Carrie shook her head at Matt’s dumb question and headed for the backyard. “Of course she knows, how do you think I found out about the party? What’s the big deal, Matt? I’ve been to one of her parties, it’s not like I’m gonna get freaked out or anything. We just want to spend some time together before we both leave town.”
Matt stared after Carrie for a few seconds, and then he hurried after her. “I’m not talking about you, Care. I’m asking because of Kelly. You think she’s throwing this party so that she can hang out with you? No. That’s why we’re all going out the next night.” Matt laughed that Carrie was doing the same thing he had done, though he didn’t think Carrie was aware. He continued to laugh when Carrie turned around and stared at him. “You might not want to go out with someone, but maybe she does. How many girls are going to come up to her if you’re hanging around?”
Carrie stared at Matt blankly because the idea had never occurred to her. Kelly had said that if she came to another party she would have to meet some of Kelly’s friends, though that had been when Kelly had thought she was gay. “But she didn’t say that I couldn’t come, and Ashley goes to the parties all the time.” When Matt continued to look at her like she was an idiot, Carrie turned and walked away. “I can talk with other people. I know Ashley and this actress couple.”
Matt snickered at Carrie’s answer. “You just said you wanted to go to the party to spend time with her. Why go at all if you’re not going to spend a lot of time with Kelly?” The whole thing didn’t bother him at all, it just seemed like Carrie was being selfish. “Did she ask you to come, or did you say that you could make it when she was talking about the party?”
Carrie thought back to the conversation while she opened up the back door and walked outside. Kelly had been talking about the party, and she had said that she thought she would be free that night. So maybe Kelly hadn’t invited her, but Kelly would have said it wasn’t all right for her to come to the party. “Matt, stop being a dork. What is with you that you’re all about people dating?”
Matt shut the door behind him once he was outside, and then he sat down on the end of the porch. “I’m not doing anything. I asked a reasonable question. What’s so weird about Kelly wanting to meet someone she could date at one of her parties? I don’t know Kelly like you do, but I do know she considers you a close enough friend that she wouldn’t un-invite you to a party.” Matt knew that Carrie really liked hanging out with Kelly, so he had to smile at Carrie’s behavior. When he looked up at Carrie and saw her uncertain expression, Matt got up and hugged her. “You know I’m not trying to upset you. I just don’t want you to be disappointed if she’s not paying attention to you.”
Carrie rolled her eyes at Matt’s sentimental turn. “Please, I am not a kid who can’t share her friends.” She wanted to go inside and call Kelly to make sure that it was okay for her to come to the party, though she wasn’t about to admit that to Matt. “It’s still a party, and there are other people to talk to, I’ll be fine.” Carrie patted Matt’s back and then pushed him away. “Good looking out for Kelly though. I didn’t know you cared so much about her, Matty.”
Matt ignored the use of his nickname and sat back down on the porch. “Hey, just because you’re not looking to go out with a perfectly nice guy doesn’t mean you have to be the only one not getting some.” Matt laughed when Carrie hit him and called him an ass. “Whatever, I’m sure Kelly would appreciate my starting this conversation if she sees a cute girl at the party.”
****
Ashley wondered for twelfth time why she had told Kelly that she would take care of the party on her own. She mentally berated herself as she pulled yet another tray out of the oven and placed it with the others to cool. She had dropped one of the trays of food when a lost couple unexpectedly stumbled into the kitchen; not to mention that she hadn’t had any help filling the containers of ice. Ashley sighed and tried not to think about how they were only an hour into the party as she quickly moved the snacks from the cooled trays to serving plates.
Carrie stood back at the edge of the doorway as Ashley quietly cursed at the food. If she wasn’t so nervous that she was about to talk alone with the other girl, she would laugh at the sight. Ashley had been perfectly nice to her anytime that she’d come over to Kelly’s, but they hadn’t talked or anything really; just exchanged hellos and made polite conversation. Carrie took a deep breath and reminded herself to smile as she stepped into the kitchen. “They ran out of ice at the bar, I was wondering if maybe you could help me with that?”
Ashley dropped the items in her hands and gestured for Carrie to follow. If the girl wanted to help her out, then she wasn’t about to say no. She had been surprised when Carrie arrived at the party; she had thought that Carrie would back out and just go with them tomorrow night. Although, Carrie’s appearance disappointed her because she had hoped that Kelly would spend the party having fun and flirting with single girls; it was the whole reason she had volunteered to take care of the hostess duties on her own. “You having fun?”
Carrie thought about her answer while Ashley led her back to where the extra ice was kept for the party. She knew where the ice was because she had helped Kelly at the last party, but it really was a two-person job. “Yeah, Kelly introduced me to her two friends...” Carrie couldn’t remember their names at the moment. The conversation had only lasted until Kelly walked off to greet some new arrivals, and then she had left and drank some beer while she relaxed in a relatively quiet spot.
“Allison and Hilary?” Ashley opened up the freezer with the extra ice, though she turned to look at Carrie. When the country singer nodded, Ashley turned back around and started the process of getting enough ice for the entire party. “They’re nice. What’s Kelly up to now?” Surprised, Ashley stopped her motions for a minute when Carrie started to help her. “Thanks… So… Kelly?” Ashley hoped that Carrie was at least keeping Kelly entertained.
Carrie cleared her throat so that she could try to sound casual. She really hated to sound like a dork or shy in front of people who didn’t really like her. “The last time I saw her, she was talking to a girl. I’ve mostly been hanging out and listening to the music.” Carrie had forgotten about how out of place she had felt at the first party, but after a good ten minutes on her own she had remembered the awkwardness. She wanted to talk to Kelly, but when she had found her friend, Kelly had been talking to a girl, so she had gone back to her quiet spot and only ventured away when she finished a beer. It was while she was getting a beer that she realized the bar was out of ice and that if she helped out she could at least talk to Ashley.
Ashley stared at Carrie, thrilled to hear that Kelly was talking to a girl. “Really? I mean she said she would try to talk to less couples, but I really didn’t think she would.” She grinned and forgot about how much trouble the party had been on her own; it was worth it if Kelly was talking to someone, even if nothing happened. Ashley went back to helping out when Carrie nearly dropped some ice on the floor. They quietly worked together until they had enough ice, which gave Ashley time to remember Carrie’s words. “Have you found anyone to talk to?” She had a feeling that Carrie had been off on her own again, like at the last party.
Carrie didn’t want to admit that she had pretty much stayed away from everyone unless people came up to her. She was sure that wouldn’t help with Ashley’s image of her. “I’ve talked to some people. I know this one couple, they’re actresses.” Carrie wasn’t lying, she did know the couple, she just hadn’t talked to the girls. She was glad that Ashley didn’t pursue the subject and let them get back inside without any further discussion. She could handle Ashley’s politeness if it meant she didn’t have to stand around on her own and look stupid in front of the other party goers.
Ashley thought about Carrie’s lacking answers as they refilled all the ice. She hadn’t thought it was a bad thing that Carrie had come to the party, she had thought it was kind of cool of Carrie actually, but even she didn’t want to think about Carrie being alone during a party. “You, umm, I could use help in the kitchen.” Ashley watched the other girl as Carrie filled the last container of ice, and then looked away when she saw Carrie smile. If the sight wasn’t kind of pathetic, she might have thought it was sweet that Carrie wanted to talk to her. Ashley looked around for Kelly, to see if her best friend was still talking to a girl. “She better be talking to a really hot girl.”
Carrie hadn’t caught all of what Ashley had mumbled, but what she had heard confused her. When she saw that Ashley was looking at Kelly, she figured out what the girl must have said. “Well, I don’t know if the girl is hot or not, but Kelly’s been talking to her for like thirty minutes or whatever.” Carrie kind of wanted to call Matt and apologize for the way she had snipped at him when he had told her that Kelly wasn’t throwing the party to talk to her, though she just followed Ashley to the kitchen. “You know it’s really nice of you to do all this so that she can talk.”
Ashley didn’t want to make a big deal out of her taking care of the party, mainly because it really wasn’t a big deal if it meant Kelly actually used the time to talk to people about more than pleasantries. “Kelly usually talks to the guests anyway, so it’s not that much more work.” She went back to her earlier task of plating the food that had cooled, although after clearing a tray, she turned to Carrie and smiled. “Could you grab the empty platters out there while I finish these?”
Carrie wandered out to the dining room and started the clean up there. Maybe Ashley wasn’t the most conversational person, it was better than what she had been doing before. After picking up all the empty trays, Carrie grabbed another beer on her way back to the kitchen. She really hadn’t thought of something to say to Ashley. She was slightly afraid that any joke she made would be taken the wrong way. “If you want to take a break, or go talk to some people, I can handle this.”
Ashley watched Carrie put the dirty dishes in the sink and bit her lip so that she didn’t say that the party must really suck if Carrie wanted to clean. She knew her words wouldn’t go over well. “I’m fine. Grab the stuff on that counter and we can go set these out for everyone.” She didn’t want to spend an hour in uncomfortable silence, or worse, talk about timers and ice with Carrie. Ashley could tell that Carrie was cautious of her, so when they got back to the kitchen she decided to apologize. “Look, I should have said this before now, but I know that you want to hang out with Kelly and not me, so I haven’t, but that’s not an excuse really-"
Carrie was so relieved to see Kelly walk into the kitchen, that she interrupted Ashley. “Kelly, hey.” She didn’t want to have Ashley yell at her or curse her out, once on the phone had been enough for Carrie. She jumped up on one of the counters and opened her beer that she had set aside.
Kelly smiled at Carrie, though she walked over towards Ashley. “What’s going on?” She had seen Carrie helping Ashley, and she hoped that the two were getting along. She turned away slightly so that Carrie couldn’t see her face, and then she looked at Ashley curiously. Kelly had been in the middle of a conversation with someone when she saw Ashley giving her a dirty look, and it was about that time that she noticed that Carrie was with Ashley. Since no one was bleeding or crying, she took it as a sign that they were getting along.
Ashley grinned and put her arm around Kelly’s shoulder to reassure Kelly that everything was okay. “Nothing is going on in here. We’re just keeping up with the party and talking. Although,” Ashley looked over at Carrie conspiratorially, her grin became even more genuine when Carrie smiled back at her. “Carrie mentioned that you had something going on. Tell us about this girl you’ve been talking to.”
Carrie laughed when Kelly blushed; it was nice that Ashley had included her in the conversation. “Yeah, you have to tell us if she’s hot or not, because neither of us have much of an opinion there.” She relaxed a little more when Ashley laughed at her remark.
Kelly eased Ashley’s arm from around her shoulder and backed away. “You’re both teaming up to ask me about girls? This is kind of scary. Where’d the fighting go?” She wasn’t upset that Ashley and Carrie were acting friendly, she was actually pleased that she had been concerned about nothing.
“There was no fighting, just me looking out for you.” Ashley thought that it couldn’t hurt to reiterate her intentions when she had called Carrie and yelled at the girl. “Quit trying to change the subject. That was a horrible try, even for you.” Ashley walked away from Kelly and moved closer to Carrie so that Kelly didn’t feel cornered or crowded. “The least you could do is tell us, since you left Carrie out there on her own.”
Kelly started to laugh that Ashley tried to guilt her over leaving Carrie alone, but Ashley did look serious; which would explain the glare her best friend had given her earlier. “Hey! What happened to you wanting me to talk to girls? Carrie knows people here. It’s not like I abandoned her.”
“That’s true.” Carrie decided to speak up before the teasing could turn into an argument. She didn’t feel like Kelly had ignored her, although she was surprised as hell that Ashley had said something about it to Kelly. “I do know people here. And you did introduce me to your friends, umm,” Carrie frowned as she tried to remember the couple’s names.
“Hillary and Allison.” Ashley nearly laughed when Carrie said thank you and sipped from her beer.
Kelly just stared at her two friends and wondered what exactly had happened since she had left Carrie alone. She was happy that Ashley had made the effort to spend time with Carrie, but the small exchange between Carrie and Ashley was weird to witness after hearing Ashley trash Carrie so many times. “Next thing, you’re going to be telling me to go back to the party and start finishing each other sentences. If that happens, I’m so cutting you two off and sending you upstairs to sleep.”
Ashley just raised an eyebrow at Kelly’s half-serious joke. “I think she must like the girl.” Ashley turned towards Carrie and looked at the other girl for an opinion. “She usually only avoids this much when she doesn’t want to talk about something that she really wants or is unsure about.”
Carrie thoughtfully nodded as she pretended to consider Ashley’s words. It was kind of nice to be able to joke around with Kelly and Ashley. “Well, then I’m thinking that Kelly must like this girl. She totally left the girl out at the party to avoid having to introduce us to her.” Carrie lost control of her serious expression and started to laugh when Kelly just stared at them.
“Is there food burning?” Kelly went to see if there were any burners on, or the oven. “Because you two must be drunk. Y’all are more interested in me and girls than is healthy. That’s just weird.” She really wasn’t trying to avoid introducing the girl she had been talking to, though she would now that Ashley and Carrie had apparently decided to team up and tease her.
Ashley laughed as Kelly shook her head and walked out of the kitchen without saying another word. “I really thought that she would have lasted longer.” She chuckled and went over to the oven to make sure that Kelly hadn’t accidentally changed the settings. “I’m glad she left though.”
Carrie hopped off the counter, and then leaned against it while she watched Ashley. “Why?” She wasn’t so afraid of what Ashley might say now. Plus, she knew Kelly could handle a joke, so she wasn’t worried about Kelly being upset at their jokes.
If anyone asked, Ashley planned to blame her apology on alcohol, though she hadn’t drank. “I was trying to apologize for the stuff I said to you when she came in, so…” With a sigh, Ashley faced Carrie and studied the other girl for a moment. Carrie had been a good friend to Kelly, despite the way she had gone off on the blonde. “I’m sorry for the things I said. I shouldn’t have called you like that, and I shouldn’t have assumed the way I did.”
Carrie silently watched Ashley pick up a hand towel and play around with it; it wasn’t the best apology that she had ever gotten, but after the things Ashley had said, she was just glad to have gotten an apology. “I’m not going to lie and say you didn’t hurt my feelings, but I’m over it. I mean you were just looking out for Kelly, so it shouldn’t be a huge thing, right?”
Ashley smiled at Carrie, relieved that the other girl wasn’t angry with her. “I’m still sorry.” She rolled her eyes when Carrie grinned at her. Before Carrie could tease her or maybe run out and tell Kelly that she had apologized, Ashley tossed the towel in her hands at Carrie. “Put that nasty drink down and I’ll make you a real one.” She went over and grabbed Carrie’s hand as the blonde started to protest. “Relax, I’m not going to give you that smorgasbord of alcohol that Kelly calls a drink.”
****
Kelly could feel her giggles return as Ashley snickered again. At first, she had ignored Ashley’s comments about Carrie’s dancing because they were supposed to be having fun during their last night in town. Once she had seen that Ashley was not exaggerating about Carrie’s limited dance moves, she had laughed and joked along with her friend. Kelly picked her drink up and kicked Ashley’s foot. “Shut up about how she can’t dance. I swear if you make me laugh in front of her I will get you back.”
Ashley wasn’t worried about Kelly’s threat. They lived with each other, if Kelly did ever try to get back at her, it would be just as easy for her to retaliate. “I’ll try, I mean it’s not like I want to laugh at her, she’s just…” Ashley started to chuckle again, though just as quickly shut her mouth before Carrie could overhear them. The blonde was a few feet from the table, although Ashley doubted that Carrie could hear them over the loud music that currently played throughout the bar. “You know I half expected her to-"
"Ashley!” Kelly warned her friend and kicked Ashley’s foot again. While it had been fun to joke with Ashley, she really didn’t want Carrie to be embarrassed by their jokes. Their giggly mood was Carrie’s fault anyway. They had been laughing about how Hector and Tommy were dancing while Jason and Matt stood a few feet away and watched over them protectively. Kelly smiled brightly when Carrie joined them in the booth again. “Enjoying yourself?”
Carrie had to grin at the question because she was enjoying the night out, even if she was mainly dancing with Tommy and Hector. “I knew it was a good idea to bring the guys with us. I think I actually managed to dance five songs without someone interrupting.” Carrie sipped her beer and looked back at the dance floor. She was happy that Tommy and Hector had decided to come since everyone but Hector was leaving Nashville tomorrow.
Ashley had to bite her lip so that she didn’t ask why people had stopped Carrie from dancing previously. “Having four guys around you will do that.” Ashley shook her head when Kelly giggled. “I’m going to go get another drink. You guys want anything?” She didn’t look at Kelly. If she looked at Kelly she would laugh. Ashley pressed her lips together tightly when Carrie asked for a water because of all the dancing. She knew she couldn’t come back to the table any time soon.
Carrie didn’t know why Kelly and Ashley didn’t want to dance, but she thought they were missing out on a good time. “Why aren’t you and Ashley dancing, Kel? You know, it’s so much fun, even with Matt and Jason standing around like bodyguards.” She smiled when Kelly giggled. “Did you see Jason’s face when I started dancing with him?” Carrie thought it was cute that Jason had blushed and asked why she wasn’t dancing with Kelly, though he had danced with her for a couple songs.
"What?” Kelly set her drink down and looked over in her brother’s direction. She didn’t know how she felt about Jason dancing with Carrie since her friend’s moves consisted mostly of bouncing while her feet were shoulder width apart. Kelly grimaced at the mental image of her brother and Carrie basically grinding on the dance floor. She took a gulp of her drink and tried not to blush when her mind automatically switched to thoughts of her and Carrie dancing together to get rid of the first image.
Carrie sipped her beer as she tried to figure out what to say. Kelly hadn’t sounded angry, though a one word reply wasn’t exactly an endorsement of her dancing with Jason. “I think I made him feel like a brother tagging along instead of a friend. I got the feeling that he didn’t want to dance unless you and Ashley were too.” Carrie still wanted the girls to come out and dance, but she hadn’t lied. “Besides, he’s not that great of a dancer. Please don’t tell him that.”
Jason wasn’t an amazing dancer, but the idea of Carrie saying that Jason was a bad dancer made Kelly forget about her blush. “I’m sure it was fun watching him try though.” She quickly brought her drink back up to her mouth to cover up her urge to laugh. Kelly reluctantly set her glass down when she finished her drink, although she moved over and sat next to Carrie. “You need to drink the beers we ordered you while you were dancing. You’re way behind.”
Carrie frowned when Kelly started to laugh for no apparent reason. She looked at the table and noticed the empty glasses around where Kelly and Ashley had sat. “Kelly? How many of those are yours and Ashley’s?” Neither of the girls had looked drunk, and Carrie was pretty sure that Ashley hadn’t had any problems walking away from the booth. Another look at her giggling friend had Carrie up on her feet. “Come on, let’s go dance before Ashley comes back with pitchers for the both of you.”
Suddenly Ashley’s comment about Carrie’s dancing, that she had thought about to distract herself, wasn’t as funny once Kelly realized what Carrie had said. “I don’t want to.” Kelly took one of the beers they had ordered for Carrie and sipped it as she willed herself not to blush. She knew either she would laugh or she would be red the whole time she danced with Carrie, and Kelly wasn’t about to do that to herself, let alone where Ashley could see and tease her. “I’m sorry, but you suck at dancing. You’re cute, but I’m not having Ashley and everyone laugh at me.”
Carrie stared at Kelly; she couldn’t believe that Kelly would say that to her. “Whatever, we’re just having fun. No one is going to care, and if they laugh we can make Matt and Jason beat them up.” Carrie leaned against the table, though Kelly wouldn't look at her. She slowly sat down and grabbed the beer that she assumed was hers. “I do not suck. Maybe you suck and that’s why you’re not dancing.” Carrie pouted and drank her beer when Kelly laughed at her again.
Ashley took a deep breath as she neared the booth, and then she mentally reminded herself that she shouldn’t laugh at Carrie since they had just started to become friends. “What did I miss?” Ashley handed over Carrie’s bottle of water once she was in her seat. She smiled at Carrie, determined to ignore the grin on Kelly’s face and the pout on Carrie’s. She did not want to get dragged into a discussion about dancing if Kelly had accidentally said something to Carrie.
“The loser over there won’t dance with me because she says, and I quote, “suck”.” Carrie sulkily took another drink of beer. “You want to dance, don’t ya, Ashley?” She knew that she wasn’t the best dancer, but she really hadn’t thought Kelly would say so to her face, or laugh at her. Carrie was pretty sure that both girls had been laughing at her, although she guessed it was possible that Ashley didn’t care how she danced. She looked at the other girl hopefully and subconsciously hit Kelly’s arm for laughing.
Ashley considered lying, but she knew she wouldn’t be able to keep a straight face with the way Kelly laughed. “Sorry, Carrie. I have to deal with those four,” Ashley pointed to where Tommy and Hector were dancing, and then at Jason and Matt. “I can’t deal with you scaring guys off too.” Ashley looked away and placed her drink on the table when she saw Carrie’s dejected expression. She hadn’t meant to speak that honestly. “I don’t think I’m going to drink that.”
Carrie got up from the table while Ashley apologized and blamed the alcohol. “Whatever, I’m just gonna go dance with Jason, he didn’t mind dancing with me.” She took one last sip of her beer and then put it on the table before she walked over to Jason. She knew that Kelly and Ashley weren’t sober, but they weren’t drunk either. “Your sister and her friend are being dorks and won’t dance with me.” Carrie felt a little better when Jason frowned in the direction of the booth, and then led her further onto the dance floor. She had to smile when Jason said he didn’t mind dancing with her.
Kelly slouched own in her seat because of the way Jason had looked over at her and Ashley; she was pretty sure Carrie had to have mentioned the teasing to her brother. She hated feeling guilty. Kelly looked at Matt so that she wouldn’t watch Carrie and Jason dance together. She could see that Matt was smiling, and she had a feeling that he wasn’t looking so happy because of how ridiculous Jason and Carrie looked. “She’s right, you know? We should be dancing and having fun.” Kelly thought that Ashley had the right idea about not drinking anymore since they had hurt Carrie’s feelings. “Let’s go dance with them. We’ll just drink more if we stay here, so let’s go.”
Ashley just looked at Kelly. If her best friend wanted to go dance, that was fine; but she knew that she was a little too intoxicated to keep her comments to herself. She had already made Carrie feel bad. “I’m not gonna dance with you. You go find some hot girl and dance with her.” Ashley motioned for Kelly to get up from the table when her friend pouted. “Go dance and flirt. Get Jason and them to move away from here so that guys I can flirt with won’t be afraid to come over.”
Kelly rolled her eyes at Ashley’s excuse, though she left the table and walked over to Carrie and Jason without protesting. Just because she thought that Carrie had the right idea about having fun, didn’t mean that she wanted to dance with her brother and Carrie. She wasn’t about to interrupt Hector and Tommy though, so Kelly blushed and started to dance next to Carrie and Jason. She knew she looked strange, although she smiled when Carrie and Jason separated so that she wasn’t dancing by herself.
Jason turned away to walk off, but he stopped and looked over his shoulder when Kelly grabbed his arm and asked why he was leaving. “I’m gonna go back to glaring at any guy that looks in this direction.” Jason chuckled when Carrie smiled at him gratefully. He turned back and leaned down so that he could talk in his sister’s ear without Carrie overhearing. “I don’t mind dancing with your girl, but I’m glad you finally decided to dance with her. I don’t know what you were so worried about, there’s plenty of girls dancing with friends here.”
Carrie wanted to know what Jason had whispered to Kelly, especially when Kelly blushed and move closer to her. “You know it’s sad when even your own brother won’t dance with you.” She smiled when Kelly looked up at her. She could handle Kelly laughing at her dancing if the other girl was willing to dance with her.
“Smart alec.” Kelly was happy that Carrie had gotten over her and Ashley’s comments. She definitely liked smiling, teasing Carrie better than the pouting version. Kelly wasn’t sure how close was too close for Carrie, so she tried to keep some distance between them, but she started to giggle at how silly they had to look to everyone else.
Carrie playfully pushed Kelly’s shoulder when the other girl started to giggle. “I know you’re laughing at me because you’ve had a few too many drinks, but try to keep it together through one song.” She could ignore Kelly’s giggling since it meant that Kelly was having fun, and that’s all she had really wanted anyway since they both had a hectic week starting the next day.
Kelly lightly grabbed Carrie’s hands and moved closer to the blonde, intent to help Carrie out a little, although she almost immediately let go when Carrie moved closer also. She couldn’t help Carrie dance if she was too caught up in how it felt to have Carrie dancing against her. “I’m sorry.” Kelly laughed and backed away before Carrie could stop her. “I bet Ashley’s laughing her ass off.”
Carrie didn’t really care if Ashley, or anyone else, laughed at her. “Whatever, you know it’s fun dancing with me.” She didn’t try to dance closely with Kelly again, though she didn’t understand why the other singer had grabbed her hands if Kelly was just planning to pull away. “You know, none of the guys I’ve dated have ever said anything about the way I dance.” It was only a little lie, most guys didn’t comment about how she danced because they were too afraid of insulting her.
Kelly didn’t believe that not one of Carrie’s exes hadn’t commented on how it looked when Carrie danced. “I’m sure they don’t mind because you’re pretty much showing that that you can ride-" She shut her mouth before she could finish her thought. Kelly blamed her loose lips on the brief instance of when Carrie had danced against her; if the blonde wasn’t dancing somewhat suggestively, the thought wouldn’t have been in her head. Kelly had to laugh though when Carrie stopped dancing and stared at her; the look on Carrie’s face was too cute not to laugh.
Carrie couldn’t think of a comeback because of Kelly’s words. She wasn’t shocked, her exes had told her what it looked like when she danced, but she was surprised that Kelly would say the same. The only thing she could think of to say was to make a joke about how much Kelly had drank.
Kelly laughed nervously as Carrie failed to joke about her comment. She half wanted to walk away. She knew that if Carrie didn’t say something soon she would be blushing right along with Carrie. Kelly decided to spin and turn away a little so that she didn’t have to see Carrie. If she couldn’t see Carrie’s red cheeks, then she wouldn’t blush either, hopefully.
Carrie grabbed Kelly’s hips when her friend became unbalanced by an attempt to spin around. She started to ask if Kelly wanted to sit down, but she got an evil idea and pulled Kelly up against her. Carrie laughed when she saw Kelly’s surprised expression. “You should see the look on you face, it’s-" Carrie stopped herself from saying priceless when she noticed that Kelly didn’t look so surprised anymore; Kelly was gazing at her lips. She suddenly realized that there wasn’t any space between them and quickly let go of Kelly. “I’m sorry.”
Kelly took a step towards Carrie; she wanted the feeling of Carrie dancing against her again, the blonde hadn’t even danced that closely to Jason. She stopped staring at Carrie’s lips and blushed when she figured out that Carrie was apologizing. “It’s fine. Don’t worry. You, you were just getting me back for what I said.” Kelly wasn’t sure how her body was still dancing, but she was just glad to not have completely zoned out when Carrie had pulled so that they were flush against each other. She could feel her cheeks grow hotter as she watched Carrie dance and thought about how it had felt when Carrie had done the same pressed against her.
Carrie was so embarrassed at what she had inadvertently done. “No, I’m so sorry. I totally didn’t think about how that would-” Carrie didn’t know how to apologize without embarrassing herself further or insulting Kelly. She sighed and hoped Kelly would forget about her dumb mistake because of how much alcohol Ashley and Kelly had consumed. She quit dancing and tried to leave, but she didn’t get more than a step away when Kelly pulled her back.
"It’s okay, let’s just dance.” Kelly playfully tugged Carrie closer and held onto the other singer’s hands so Carrie wouldn’t walk away. “If you don’t try to dance you’re going to look even sillier just standing there.” She smiled when Carrie stared at her for a second before starting to dance again, and then she laughed while Carrie let go of one of her hands and pretended to try to get her to spin. Kelly freed her other hand and shook her head, just happy that the night out hadn’t been ruined.
