"Over on the left there," Kelly said pointing out the apartment complex to Carrie.
Carrie eased her way towards the gated entrance and brought her car to a steady stop at the call box. "What's the code?" She asked, casting a side glance at Kelly.
Kelly smirked and lifted a brow. "How do I know you're not some crazed fan out to stalk me?"
Carrie let out a loud chuckle and continued staring at the cute Texan in her passenger seat. "Do I need to remind you who caught whom listening to their music in a coffee shop a couple days ago?"
"Point taken, but that hardly makes me a stalker," she retorted, "And the code is 5736." She finished, allowing the tiny smirk to remain on her face as she shifted her head from Carrie’s direction and glanced out the window.
Carrie let her window down with a push of the button on her door panel and quickly reached out to punch the numbers in. After typing them in she pushed the button on her panel again to let the window back up before straightening in her seat and proceeding through the now opened gate.
“Wow,” Carrie breathed out, admiring the apartments as she continued forward, “You live here? Seems like a pretty awesome place to live.”
Kelly shifted in the seat and focused her attention on Carrie again. “Yeah…well, actually I kind of just officially moved in today.” She laughed and peeled her hat from her head. Carrie shot her a glance from the corner of her eye and waited for her to continue.
“Kate asked me to move in with her and Jill earlier today…at lunch.” She explained.
“Oh, I see. Well that’s cool.” Carrie spoke softly, her grip slightly tightening on the steering wheel.
Kelly shrugged. “Yeah…I mean people move in with their girlfriends and stuff all the time, right? And it’s not like we’re not together all the time anyways so…”
“I don’t mean to cut you off here, but which building are you in?”
She pointed to a building they were slowly approaching. “Right there.”
Carrie nodded and gradually eased her car up alongside the curb and brought it to a stop. “It’s what you wanted though, right?” Carrie asked.
Kelly blinked. “What?” Somehow she had managed to lose her train of thought.
“Moving in with Jill and Kate.” She paused for a second to allow the other girl to get back on the same page as her. “It’s what you want, right? You aren’t just doing it to make her happy?”
Kelly gripped the rim of her hat that was now resting on her lap and made a face. “I really don’t know. I mean I care about her and I…I’m sorry Carrie, I’m completely just burdening you here.” She snorted and reached out for the door handle. “Thanks for the ride, I appreciate it.”
Carrie reached out quickly and placed a hand on Kelly’s wrist. “You aren’t burdening me, I promise. If you need somebody to talk to I’m here. We spend a lot of time in the studio together so if you ever need to talk anything out while you’re still in Nashville, I’m here.” She repeated.
Kelly offered a friendly smile and nodded at the country singer. “Thank you Care, that means a lot.” She paused and shifted her wrist from beneath the other girl’s hand and casually took hers into her own, giving it a gentle squeeze.
They sat in silence that way for a moment before Kelly finally pulled away. “Alright I should probably get in there and see what the hell is up. Thanks again for the ride,” she said, pushing against the car door and stepping out into the crisp Nashville air.
“Kelly,” Carrie managed to get her attention before she shut the door behind her. She waited until she saw the brunette’s face reappear. “Talk to her; she won’t know what you’re thinking or what’s going on inside of your head unless you do. I can probably assure you she’s feeling a bit of the same uncertainty that you are, so just talk to her.”
Kelly nodded. “I’ll do that, thanks Carrie. I’ll see you tomorrow.” she said with a wave of her hand before pushing the door closed and turning towards the apartment building.
Carrie remained parked in front of the building and kept her eyes glued on the short figure that became more and more distant as she continued to walk towards the building. She waited until she saw Kelly climb a short flight of stairs and disappear from her view completely before she finally pulled away from the curb.
She hated this damn door. It had the tendency of sticking every time someone tried to open it, and right now wasn’t any different. Turning her key in the lock she pushed against the door roughly with her shoulder and grunted as she flew forward into the apartment. She laughed lowly to herself at how ridiculous she probably looked trying to get inside. She nudged the door shut with her arm and securely locked everything up before turning and making her way through the living room.
“How was your date?”
Turning towards the voice she spotted Kate leaning against the wall near the entrance to the kitchen with a bottle of water in her hand. She allowed her gaze to briefly linger away from Kate and caught a quick glance at the couch and the comforter and pillow on it.
“Come on, it wasn’t a date.”
Kate rolled her eyes. “Whatever.” She muttered under her breath and pushed away from the wall.
Kelly shook her head and began to follow her girlfriend down the hall. “Is that why you guys left me there? Which was pretty fucked up by the way…but was it because I was talking to Carrie?”
Kate stopped walking as they neared her bedroom and turned to face Kelly. “More like undressing her with your eyes,” she said accusingly, narrowing her eyes at the shorter girl.
“You’re upset because I was having a conversation with a friend? So naturally that adds up to me being put in the dog house for doing absolutely nothing?” She shot back, nodding in the direction of the couch.
“Goodnight, Kelly.” Kate replied in a low whisper, turning her back on her again and brushing her fingers over the light switch in the hall, leaving Kelly in the dark.
Kelly’s jaw tightened as she watched Kate slip into her bedroom. “Kate.” She called out firmly, hearing only the sound of the bedroom door clicking shut in response.
She stood in the hallway for a couple of seconds before moving forward and pushing her way into the room.
“What part of the pillow and blanket being on the couch don’t you get?” She snapped.
“You’re being ridiculous right now, Kate. There is nothing going on between me and Carrie, not now and not ever.” Kelly snapped back.
“Does she know that?”
Kelly sighed and moved towards Kate. “Katie, why are you acting like this? What is going on with you?” She took hold of the taller girl’s wrists when she noticed she was trying to back away from her.
“Ever since you got here it’s been all about Carrie…”
She pulled her towards her. “Baby, it’s work, you know that.” She tried to assure her.
“I know…I mean on your part I believe that, but with her…I don’t know, Kel, I just get that she’s totally into you and I guess that’s making me—“
“Act a little crazy?” She smiled when Kate finally cracked a smile of her own. “And she smiles.” She whispered, pulling the other girl even closer to her and pressing a soft kiss against her lips.
“Is that what this whole moving in thing was about, sweetheart? Did you feel like you were losing me or something?”
Kate nodded. “It was a little bit of that, yeah. I’ve been a little insecure, I’ll admit that, and I’m sorry for that. I did want to ask you to move in with us anyways but I was going to wait a little longer to actually do it. I guess I just panicked. And then I saw how you got when I asked you to move in and I just…it started making me feel more insecure. I think it was mainly because I wanted you to want to move in with me but it seemed like you didn’t want that.” She explained.
Kelly nodded and placed a firmer kiss against her girlfriend’s lips. “I understand that, baby.” She replied, lowering her mouth to the corner of the Kate’s. “I’m sorry I made you feel like I didn’t want that…that I made you doubt what we have.” She pressed a kiss against her cheek and finally pulled back some.
“No, I’m sorry for turning into the crazy clingy girlfriend.” They shared a laugh as Kate pulled Kelly with her towards the bed.
She shoved Kelly down onto the mattress playfully and slowly straddled her lap. Kelly wrapped her arms around the other girl’s waist and caught her gaze. “I don’t think you’re crazy, Kate. And it wasn’t that I didn’t want to move in with you…that I don’t,” She corrected, “It’s just with our careers and everything none of us really have a permanent home as is…and I—“
Kate pressed her lips against hers before drawing back for a moment. “Shh, it’s okay. You don’t need to explain, I get it. And I also get that relationships are hard for you period, we both should have just had this talk sooner. I should have told you how I felt sooner.” She kissed her again.
Kelly returned the kiss and allowed her hands to casually trail beneath Kate’s shirt. “So, does this mean I’m out of the dog house?” She questioned, lowering her mouth to Kate’s inviting neck.
Kate managed a soft “Absolutely,” as Kelly shifted their positions on the bed.
