All she had been able to think about since the moment she stepped into the Choir room was how fast she could get out once the bell rang. That’s why she chose to sit in the back of the room further away from the suck ups that fought to be in the front of the class. It was a quicker escape since, unlike the Chemistry Lab, the Choir room had been set up differently so instead of being one of the last to leave when school was over, she’d be one of the first. There was also an added bonus to isolating herself from the rest of the girls seated in the Soprano section; she was able to stay as far away from Schuyler as she possibly could without even being noticed. She took note that Carrie was in the front row as well seated beside her new bff. Usually she’d be exactly like the two of them, her and Schuyler, both eager to belt out the song Mrs. Glenn selected for the day. But that seemed like such a long time ago. Now, the reality was that she felt as if the joy she had once felt when she used to sing had been ripped right of her chest along with her pride and dignity.
When the bell finally rang, signaling a long day finally at its end, Kelly didn’t hesitate to rise from her chair and rush towards the door to leave. She pushed on the door with ease and slipped out into the hall where other students were quickly filing in as well. Clutching the straps of her backpack, she maneuvered through a small group of students standing in the middle of the hall, keeping her eyes alert for Ashley. She spotted her friend at the end of the hall walking towards her and easily continued to weave through the ever growing sea of students. The closer she got to Ashley, the tighter the spaces she could cut through became, and she found herself colliding with someone.
Almost immediately she found herself apologizing and stepping back, but the second she heard the person in front of her speak she felt her entire body go still. Without having to look up and confirm who the person was, she knew without a doubt that Wesley was standing less than a breath away from her. After a few seconds she finally found the nerve to look up and meet his gaze. It wasn’t until then that she realized she hadn’t been breathing.
“Kelly.” She felt her fists bawling up instinctively at her sides when her name fell from his lips. Never had she ever wanted to punch a grin off someone’s face than she did right now in that moment.
She wouldn’t give him or anyone else in the school the satisfaction of seeing her lose her cool again. Instead of responding to him she breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Ashley appear beside him.
She couldn’t help but smile inwardly at the sight of her friend crossing her arms and practically hissing “Do we have a problem here, Wesley?” She also couldn’t help the actual smile that spread across her face at the expression on Wesley’s when he turned and realized who was beside him.
“Nope, no problem at all Donovan. I was just telling KC here that she didn’t have to apologize for bumping into me,” he replied smugly.
Ashley ignored him and focused her attention on her friend. “Are you okay? You ready to leave?” Kelly managed to nod and together the two of them continued down the hall and out of the school.
“So other than that tiny confrontation just now and the cafeteria ordeal how was your day?” Ashley asked, breaking the short silence that fell between them on their journey to the parking lot.
She shrugged her shoulders. “It wasn’t as bad as I thought. No one spray painted ‘dyke’ on my locker so far this year, but there’s still time for that.”
“Honestly I think all that has blown over some, the only people that seem to be holding onto this…whatever the hell you wanna call this, is Schuyler and her followers.”
She shrugged again. “I guess.” She mumbled, stopping alongside Ashley’s car and waiting to be let in.
“They don’t matter Kel, none of them matter.” Ashley spoke to her from over the hood of the car. “Though it sucks for it to be like this, it’s good to know who your real friends are.”
Kelly gave a sarcastic laugh. “Yeah, you.”
Ashley feigned being hurt. “Please, I’m like the equivalent of ten friends.” She joked as they both lowered themselves into the car.
“You’re right; you are a pretty kick ass friend.” She agreed.
Ashley nodded. “Tell me something I don’t know.” They shared a quick laugh together on behalf of Ashley’s cockiness as Ashley started her car.
“Oh, I forgot to tell you, Schuyler is telling the whole school that I’m your lovah.”
She let out a loud laugh and buried her face in her hands. “Oh lord, that’s just great.”
Ashley shot a quick glance at her. “And what the hell is so funny about that?”
“I thought we covered this before…puppies being slaughtered, remember?” She couldn’t help but laugh harder when she felt Ashley’s fist slam into her leg.
“Bitch.” Ashley joined in on the laughter. “Yeah, that’d be totally awkward. Good thing I like the boys and we won’t ever have to worry about crossing that line.”
Her laughter slowly began to die down as she wiped at the corner of her eyes. “Yeah and a good thing too, no slaughtered puppies after all.”
Ashley rolled her eyes. “You and those damn puppies.” She stopped at a red light. “Hey look, there’s Barbie.” Ashley nodded towards the corner.
Kelly followed her gaze and shrugged. “Whatever.”
She watched her friend narrow her eyes at her. “No yelling at me for calling her Barbie this time?”
“Whatever.” She repeated with another shrug. “The light's green.” She pointed out, waiting for Ashley to drive through the intersection.
“Something happened today…what happened?” Ashley quizzed curiously.
“I was a bitch to her, that’s what happened.”
“You were mean to her? I thought you liked her.”
She sighed. “It’s just easier at this point to be distant. I don’t need to make a new friend only to have Sky…Schuyler,” She corrected, “put her claws into her and turn her against me. It’s pointless, so please just let it go. You don’t think it’d be a good idea anyways so just leave it alone and be glad that I agree with you on something.” She finished and watched the light turn red again.
“I think it’d be more fun to piss Schuyler off and be friends with the new girl. Besides, she seems like she’s way too kind to be a part of that group and too naïve to say no to them.” Ashley said with a smirk, waiting for the light to turn green again. When it did she drove into the intersection and pulled up alongside the curb.
“What are you doing? She doesn't even live that far away from the school." She spoke quietly under her breath as Carrie approached the car.
"Neither do you and yet here you are in my car," Ashley said pointedly.
She rolled her eyes. "Yep, I definitely need my own car," she concluded.
Ashley was clearly ignoring her. "Need a ride?"
Carrie paused beside the open passenger window. "Hey, um I live just a couple more blocks down the street so I'm okay walking, it's not that-"
"It's no big deal; in fact, I'd be offended if you didn't accept so just hop in."
Kelly shot a quick side glance at Ashley before turning her head and meeting Carrie’s gaze.
"You're sure?" Carrie asked hesitantly.
Kelly shrugged. "Not my car," she muttered in response, holding back a yelp as Ashley punched her in the thigh for the second time during their short car ride.
“I’m sure,” she said finally, reaching behind her and unlocking the back door.
