Die smiled faintly to himself and rolled the phone between his palms as he sat on the couch. The redhead had scheduled Kyo’s first ultrasound and for the first time, the whole concept of being a father was becoming concrete. Yes, he accepted the fact that there was a baby growing inside of Kyo’s body, but it was such an intangible notion when you got right down to it.
Die couldn’t place his hand over the boy’s stomach and feel anything moving yet; Kyo hadn’t grown to the stereotypical enormous size yet. Seeing the proof that there was life being made was the only thing they would really have until then.
Suddenly, the prospect of parenthood was sinking in completely. The love and nurturing that the baby would need; the immense responsibility of knowing that a helpless someone’s life would be in his hands… Die wasn’t frightened by it like he had once thought he would be. His father hadn’t been so lucky, the redhead recalled. Hell, he hadn’t even stuck around long enough to see Die born.
Sighing, he leaned over the couch arm and placed the phone on the cradle again. He wondered what time it was by then. Kyo was in their room, taking a nap after he had finished up his school-work, so it must have been close to evening. Die flipped the TV on and confirmed this. Glancing back over at the phone, he contemplated calling his mother like he and Kyo had discussed.
The large mass of blankets with a blond tuft of hair puffing out from the top shifted as the figure beneath them rolled onto his side. He had been napping for about an hour and felt rested. Propping himself up on his elbow and pushing the blankets away from his head, Kyo looked over at the clock next to the bed, confirming that it had been an hour long nap.
A yawn was given before he managed to drag himself out the bed and to his feet. He heard Die discussing with the doctor about an ultrasound for him while he slept. Kyo didn’t know how far along he was, but if he had to guess, it would have been a month and a couple of weeks, but that was about it. Sighing, he walked out to the living room and rubbed his eye before smiling at Die.
“Did you have a good nap?” Die asked, returning the smile. He patted the couch cushion next to the one he was seated upon, moving the remote out of the way should Kyo decide to sit there. Glancing down at the remote, he found the channel button and went surfing.
“Yeah.” Kyo smiled lightly and sat down next to the redhead, leaning against him as he watched the screen while Die flicked the channels. “So… did you try to contact your mother?” Kyo knew that Die had been struggling to do so, but it was only the right thing to do. “I’m here with you, Die, okay? At least your mother still loves you, I’m sure of it.
“I haven’t been able to get her yet,” Die said, frowning. On the one occasion he had tried their old number, a man had answered and informed him that he had moved into their old apartment around a year ago. Which meant that his mother could have been anywhere. “I think I may have her new number, but I don’t really want to call.”
“Do you want me to call for you?” He asked, wondering if that would be an option for the redhead. “Die, you have to do this… I’m here for you. You have to try.” Kyo reached over and rubbed the other’s back. “I’ll call for you to find out if it’s the right number, if that’s what you want.”
“No, no. I can call her,” Die said, shaking his head. He exhaled and asked for the phone. Kyo leaned over and grabbed the phone, which the redhead took in his own hands. “I just don’t know if I should bother her or not. What if she’s better off without me around or something?”
“Die… She’s your mom. You don’t have to be around, but you at least have to let her know that you love her and that you’re safe. It would put her at ease.” He rubbed the redheads arm before bringing his feet up and sitting cross legged on the couch. “You have to call her, Die. You can’t let her go on and think that everything is her fault because she had to kick you out.”
The redhead nodded, frowning slightly. He looked down at the phone, hesitating for a moment before punching in the number. The line connected and started ringing as Die brought it to his ear. The way his stomach was churning, one would think that he was calling up his worst enemy for a chat, not his mother. Five rings in; he was ready to hang up when someone answered.
“Hello?” The voice was feminine, light—familiar. Die choked on what he started to say, faltering. “Hello?” his mother repeated, sounding confused. It took another moment for him to speak.
“Hello,” Die forced out, fighting to keep his voice steady. There was a space where nobody spoke. “Hello?” he repeated, as well. He heard a small sigh and some rustling on the other line. “Die?” her tone was hopeful.
“Yeah, it’s me,” he said, looking down at his feet. His gaze flickered around the room aimlessly, waiting on her to answer, to say anything. Blindly, he placed his hand on Kyo’s knee, plucking at the fabric. “Are you alright?” she asked, finally, straight to the point.
“I’m fine,” the redhead assured, “What about you?” He was almost shaking, trying to carry on a normal conversation with his mother after no contact with her for three years. “Alright,” she replied, “I was able to move out and get a new house. It’s nice.”
“Mom, I would like to see you soon,” Die hesitated, “If you want to. I have someone I want you to meet.” His hand squeezed Kyo’s knee slightly. There was a pause. “Any time is good. You’re not married, are you?” she sounded worried.
“No, I haven’t gotten married.” Close enough, but he omitted that fact. “But there is someone,” he added, glancing over at Kyo. “I want you to meet them.” She seemed to give a noise of relief. “Do you have time tomorrow?” she asked with hope.
“Yes. Let me get something to write down your address with,” Die said, finding a napkin and a pen. He scribbled with it and made sure that it worked. She told him and he jotted it down, double- checking the address. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” With that, they hung up. Die swallowed hard, lowering the phone to his leg with a sigh.
“So?” Kyo asked as he leaned forward, watching Die as he regained himself. It didn’t seem like it had went bad, but it didn’t look like it went well either. He reached out and rubbed the other’s shoulder and cuddled up to him, trying to comfort him if needed. Die looked like he needed the comfort.
“We’re going to her house tomorrow,” Die said, waving the napkin he had written on slightly. He wound his arm around Kyo’s body and pulled the boy closer. “After your appointment, we can go visit with her. I hope she likes you. I hope she still likes me,” Die added after a moment.
“I’m sure she does, Die. If she didn’t, she wouldn’t have let you see her. I’m glad I get to meet her.” He smiled and hugged Die tight and nuzzled up to him. “I can’t wait to meet her.” It seemed like he was the only one looking forward to it. The redhead seemed to be dreading it, but Kyo knew that his mother would not be mad at him. He knew she’d be excited to see her son again after so long.
Die smiled slightly, looping his other arm around Kyo at last. “Come here,” he said affectionately, hauling the boy into his lap. Kyo fit there nicely, his weight still slight even in the face of his slight weight gain. The redhead pulled him more securely into his lap, rubbing at the boy’s shoulder gently. “I’m glad you’re excited, at least,” he chuckled.
“One of us needs to be.” Kyo grinned before cuddling up to Die and tucking his head under the other’s chin. “Hey, Die? When are we going to dye my hair?” He recalled asking about it before, but they never said when. Kyo couldn’t wait till he was able to dye his hair red. It wouldn’t be as vibrant as Die’s, but it would still look nice.
Die had almost forgotten about Kyo’s request to dye his hair. “We can buy some tomorrow after everything is done, maybe,” the redhead answered, pushing his chin down against Kyo’s hair playfully. “Maybe only one of us with crazy hair will go over better with my mother. At least I’ve had mine for years and she will remember it.”
“Alright. I’ll buy it; I got paid from the club, so I’ll be able to get it. You should have gotten paid too.” He fit snugly against the redhead and closed his eyes with a yawn. It was nice to finally be able to get a proper amount of sleep for once. Kyo didn’t know why he was sleepy, but he didn’t question it as he settled in Die’s embrace.
