When Night Falls(Pt11)
Sav raced down the wide hall to the glass fronted partition that separated the other offices to the executive ones. He was ten feet away when the glass shattered. Sav threw up his arms to protect his face from sharp, jagged edges. The concussion of the explosion throwing him back down the hall some twenty feet. Debris began to pelt him a few seconds later, as he lay there in a daze. Sav sat up and glanced around. Bits of paper floated down to the floor, creaks and groans from the structure, loud in his ears. Sparks from severed power wires started a fire a few feet from him. Sav went to scramble to his feet, only to cry out in pain. Looking down at his leg, a large piece of splintered wood was embedded in the fleshy part of his thigh. Multiple other smaller cuts dotted exposed skin.
Pushing the pain to the back of his mind, Sav struggled to his feet and made his way through what was left of the 28th floor. Stumbling over the fallen debris, Sav finally made it to where Thomas office was supposed to be. Mindless of the smoke filtered sun light pouring through the gaping hole, he went in search of Thomas. The smell of blood and death huge heavily in the air around him. Stepping over a few mutilated bodies of the men that caused this until he found Thomas. Tossing away the debris that had fallen on him, Sav dropped to his knees, ignoring the pain that shot up his leg.

Joe, Nick and Crystal stared at TV screen in disbelief. People running and screaming away from the building. Glass, metal pieces falling to the street below. Thick black smoke rose above the building.
Nick turned from the horrible images, blocked out the sound and focused on Joe. Gripping him by the shoulder, jerking him sideways, his eyes remained glued to the screen.
“Joe…” Nick gently shook him, then forced him to turn his head. “Joe, look at me. This doesn’t mean anything, Thomas could be safe somewhere else in that building. He was being forced to say those things. You have to give him time to get down to safety and get to a phone.” Nick made him look back at him, when Joe turned to look at the TV. “No, don’t look at that. Thomas was not on that floor, he’s alright.”
Joe slowly shook his head. “No. I…I can’t feel…nothing…”
“That’s doesn’t mean anything. He is unconscious, give him tim…”
“No…NO!” Joe snapped, yelling with rage he shoved Nick to the floor. Grabbing the nearest object he threw it across the room. He spun around, his arm swiped across the table behind the couch, sending everything crashing to the floor.
Crystal leaped to her feet and ran from the room, terrified from Joe’s outburst of anger. She ran to her room, closing and locking the door behind her. Downstairs she could hear thumps and breaking glass.
Joe picked up the small table and tossed it away. Nick ducked as it sailed over his head. Joe’s deep amber eyes landed on the TV. In a blur he was yanked it out of the stand. It to went flying through the air, shattering the sliding glass doors. Waning sunlight spilled into the room.
Taking a hold of the shelving unit, he pulled it forward, everything on the shelves landed on the floor. Grabbing it along the side, he flipped it over, falling back on the glass shelves.
Nick let him destroy the living room, but when his glare spun toward the broken glass doors leading outside, he jumped to his feet just as Joe flew in that direction. Nick tackled him to the floor. A struggle ensued with him screaming in Nick’s face and hitting him with his fist. Nick dodged most of them, until he pulled his hand back and punched Joe in the face with such force that it knocked him out. Nick flinched when he heard the bone in his jaw crack and the trickle of blood that dripped from the corner of his mouth.
Nick dropped his head and took a deep shaky breath. He was straddling Joe’s waist as he sat up to look down at him. “I’m sorry, but I couldn’t let you go out that door.” Nick wiped the blood from Joe’s cheek.
Standing up, Nick bent over and picked him up. Balancing Joe over his shoulder he took him upstairs to his room.

Sav gently lifted Thomas into his arms, cradling him against his chest. Wiping the blood from his chin, then let his lips linger on Thomas’ cheek
as his arms tightened around him. The still warm blood soaked his shirt front.
Sav wasn’t aware of the hand that squeezed his shoulder or the voice that spoke to him, as he slowly rocked back and forth, humming softly. Sav let the memories of the past flood his mind. The many nights he had rocked Thomas to sleep when he was a baby. All the years with Thomas played over and over in his mind.
Scott shook him again. “Mr. Savage…Rick.” He knew that Thomas, his friend, colleague and boss of the last 22yrs was dead.
Sav looked up at him through his tears. “I was to slow…I…I couldn’t save him.”
Scott saw his fangs as he spoke. His own words dying in his throat. They sat there in silence for what seemed like hours, before Scott pulled himself together.
“Rick you have to go.”
“I’m not leaving him.”
“You have too. The police will be here soon. They can’t find you here, to many question will be asked. You would be putting the Community in danger.”
”I don’t care. I don’t want to leave him alone.”
“Tom will not be alone. He’ll never be alone, even in the afterlife.”
“You’ll stay with him?”
“Yes.” Scott reassured him. “You have to go now. Hide in the Chambers until I come and get you. Everything you need is there.” Scott told him as he looked at the piece of wood sticking out of his leg.
Sav gently laid Thomas on the floor. Reaching inside his blood stained shirt, he unclasped the chain around Thomas neck, holding it tightly in his fist. Softly caressing his face, Sav leaned over Thomas, gently kissing his lips. He sat up and painfully pushed himself to his feet, balancing on his good leg. Reluctantly Sav tore his eyes from Thomas, letting Scott help him make his way down to the Chambers, a secret room in the building, specifically designed for vampires.

The investigation into what happened and who was involved was under way the same day. Nick really didn’t trust the people assigned to the investigation, so he put in motion on of his own. He hired some of the best private investigator in the world to find out who was responsible. He also hired highly skilled guards to protect the 3,000 people all over the world under his employment. The incident at the de Brabant Foundation, not only affected his family, but all the charities and families the Foundation and its subsidiaries helped on a yearly/daily basis.

Four days later, a large private jet was flying over the black skies of the cold North Atlantic Ocean. The passengers talking in low voices, trying to comfort each other in the wake of Thomas tragic death.
When the plane landed some 14hrs later, passenger gathered belongs and disembarked the plane, to the waiting group of family members. Hugs and more tears all around.
A door at the back of the plane designed to handle wide cargo that was inside the passenger cabin was already opened. Sav came out of that door and his eyes immediately sought out Joe’s, for a brief contact. Making his way down the stairs, at the bottom he stopped to glance behind him. The casket that held Thomas was unloaded. Once the six men reached the ground, they sat it on the awaiting gurney to be rolled over to the waiting Hurst.
Amber was the first to approach Sav. They held each for long moments, until Joe’s voice pulled them apart.
“Open it. I want to see him.”
“Don’t do this Joe.” Nick said standing beside him.
“Do what? To want to see the person inside to make sure he’s my son.”
“It’s him.” Sav replied softly.
“I don’t want it to be Tommy in there. I want him here, beside me, where he belongs.” Joe’s voice broke and tears pooled in his eyes. He spun around to face Sav, “We knew you were in the building. “What were you doing while I was talking to him on the phone? Did you even hear the gunshot that killed him? Why didn’t…”
Nick grabbed his arm, “Joe that is enough.”
“…you save him Rick.” Joe finished, jerking his arm away.
“You don’t think I tried? From the moment I stepped out of the stairwell, I was dodging fucking bullets trying to get to Thomas. I heard the gun go off that probably killed him as I was choking the life out of one of those men.” Sav answered, fighting to hold back his own raw emotions. “The site of Thomas like that is burned into my memory….forever. His last dying thoughts constantly repeat in my head.”
“Now is not the time for this.” Phil said moving over to them.
“No, let me finish.” Sav held Joe’s eyes. “I would gladly give my life for his. To have Thomas standing here in front of you and not in that box. You are not the only one hurting here Joe. Thomas was like a son to m..”
”He was my son!” Joe suddenly yelled. His voice echoed around the hanger, startling those standing around. “My son,” he said more firmly. Staring him down a few seconds longer, Joe slumped in his posture, fresh tears rolled down his face. “I can’t do this again Rick, it hurts too much.”
“I know.” Sav whispered and pulled Joe into his arms. “We’ll get through this together, just like all the times before.”
Nick told the men standing beside the casket to load it in the Hurst. Once it was secured inside, everyone shuffled to the cars that awaited them.
“Let’s take Thomas home.” Sav whispered in his ear.
Pulling away Joe looked into his eyes. Pushing his painful loss aside for a moment, he finally noticed how tired Sav looked. “You look tired.”
“Don’t worry about me.”
“I’m sorry.”
“For what.”
“For yelling at you. For saying what I did. I know you would have saved his life if you could.” Joe dropped his gaze.
“We can talk about it later. All I want to do now is go home.” Sav laced his fingers through his.
“Why are you limping?” Joe asked as they headed for the car.
“It’s nothing.”
”Doesn’t look like nothing.”
“Really Joe, it’s….”
Pulling him to a stop, Joe studied his face. “How bad were you hurt? Did a bullet hit you?”
Sav started walking away, “Don’t concern yourself with me. I’ll be fine.”
”Rick.”
“Dammit Joe.” Sav huffed as he spun back around. “I just brought our son home to…” he stopped when he realized what he said. “Th…that slipped out.”
”Thomas was our son. Rebecca’s, mine and yours. He was given your name, you helped to raise him. Thomas may have been my flesh and blood, but he was your son too. That’s how Rebecca wanted it from the beginning, that you would be a father to him. We don’t have either of them with us now, but we still have each other.”
“Yes we do.” Sav replied, nodding his head. “A…a piece of wood was in my leg. Scott helped me pull it out, but it hasn’t healed completely. A couple of the bullets grazed my side, but nothing serious.”
Joe looked over to where the car waited for them. Nick was standing beside it, intently watching them. “It will now. You know that Nick is not going to let it go until it’s healed properly.”
Sav glanced at him, his brows jutted together, “Just my luck.”
They started toward the car again. Nick moved aside, waiting as they climbed in. He stepped in behind them and closed the door.
Joe and Sav sat on one side, while Nick took up the seat on the opposite side. The car slowly moved forward to pull out of the hanger, follow closely with two others
“How did we let him get so deep under our skin Joe?”
“I have no idea.” Joe mused taking his hand. “When you come up with the answer you can tell me.”
Nick scoffed at them and turned to look out the window. He too wanted to know the answer to that. Now was not the time to try and figure it out.
