Decieved
“I can’t believe how nervous I am.” Darren whispered to Daniel as they entered the school. Students passed them by looking away before meeting Darren’s eyes.
“Ignore them. They can’t touch you, they mean nothing okay?” Daniel nudged Darren’s fingers with his own as a sign of solidarity and smiled reassuringly. It had been two nights since they had been intimate and since then nothing had been mentioned of it, but everything that needed to be said was in their held gazes and secret smiles. At night they held each other and fell asleep in each other’s arms. The intense feeling he had for Darren made what he had before with Robert a joke. Robert. A flicker of disgust crossed his face as he thought of the teacher. He had better stay out of Darren’s way today or he wouldn’t be liable for what happened.
“I’ll see you later in the drama room? I could go through some lines with you.” They stopped in the corridor and faced each other.
“You don’t need any help with your lines. You’re word perfect!” Darren laughed as the crowd bustled around him.
“Well all the same, it would be nice to have some extra help. The play’s tomorrow night!” He paused as a flicker of nervous excitement passed through him. “Darren, if you need me come find me okay?” The smaller boy nodded and Daniel’s felt some of his easiness die away. “I’ll see you later.”
He walked away and tried to bury the urge to skip. He hadn’t felt this wonderful in ages, it was all Darren’s doing. Just a soft mile from him filled his heart with indescribable joy. If it hadn’t been from him he wouldn’t have entered the play. The feeling to walk down the corridor and people actually know who you was almost dizzying.
The day passed in a blur. Lessons seemed to blend into one and every minute he checked his watch. He couldn’t wait to see Darren. He hurried to the drama room as the final bell whistled.
Reaching the door he was surprised to hear two voices speaking in hushed tone.
“…nothing on us!” hissed a voice Daniel recognised as Darren’s.
“Don’t fight it, Darren. I know you want it as much as I do.” The second voice belonged to Robert.
“You can’t, I won’t!” Darren’s voice was bordering on hysteria.
“You’ve heard my proposal, how can you refuse?”
“I…please!”
“If you insist.” Robert drawled. Daniel pushed open the door in fury. There was Robert with Darren pressed up against the wall in a kiss. But Darren wasn’t fighting back, instead his eyes were closed and he was eagerly responding to Robert’s embrace.
“Darren!” Daniel’s voice croaked. Robert pushed the boy away and turned with a surprised smirk.
“Do you mind? We are busy.” Daniel ignored Robert and stared at Darren’s horrified face.
“Daniel, please…” He began but was cut off by Robert.
“Don’t blame yourself Daniel, Darren just needs a real man and not some pretender to the throne.” A red mist descended and Daniel threw himself at him. His fist connected with the older mans face and with grim satisfaction he saw that the man was down and bleeding. “You’ve really done it now, boy!” Robert roared, staring up at him. But Daniel paid him no mind and instead stared into Darren’s despair ridden eyes.
He wanted to speak but he was afraid he’d breakdown if he tried. Instead he shook his head and left the room, running.
Darren! Why? his brain screamed over and over as tears poured down his face.
Why?
*~*~*
“I’ll see you later,” Daniel said and walked away. A knot of fear formed in Darren’s stomach as his protector left. He warily eyed the crowded corridor and tried to pretend that the looks of morbid curiosity were just in his head. Putting his head down he hurried to his next class, his mind full of Daniel. The green of his eyes, his easy smile, the way his hands had touched him two nights ago. A shiver of remembered joy tingled his skin as he thought of Daniel’s lips ghosting over his skin.
“Mr Hayes? Is there something funny about Heathcliffe’s despair?” Robert’s voice pulled him out of his daydream,
“Funny Sir?” His cheeks burned as his classmates turned to look at him.
“You were smiling. Broadly in fact.” The pupils giggled and Darren felt himself sinking into his chair.
“I’m sorry, Sir.” He whispered eyes glued to the desk as he felt Robert’s angry gaze on him.
The moment the lesson ended he charged for the drama room, after a horrible day he couldn’t wait to see Daniel. He sat down at the desk and pulled out his battered copy of Wilde’s play. The door creaked open and Darren turned revealed. As he recognised Robert his smile disappeared.
“Darren, I just wanted to see if you were okay? You were behaving so bizarrely in class and then you charged off. Do you need someone to speak to? I’m here as a friend, Darren.” His voice dripped insincerity.
“It’s okay Robert, I’m fine. Daniel’s coming soon.” His eyes flicked to the door. Robert was making him more nervous then usual.
“Ahh you’re living with him now aren’t you? That must be…nice.” He sneered and his eyes bored into Darren’s. He took the seat next to him and placed a hand on Darren’s knee. “You’re in a better class then him, Darren. He’s not a real friend. He just wants something from you. And I can guess what.” His hand shot up Darren’s leg and rested on his groin, in shock Darren jumped up and backed towards the wall.
“Don’t…don’t…” He gasped.
“Oh like you don’t love it, bet you squeal under his touch, huh? Why in hell you choose him over me? It’s not too late. I still want you. I can show you real pleasure.” He moved towards him and pinned Darren’s arms to the wall.
“Don’t touch me, just let me go!” Darren pleaded.
“I could make a lot of trouble for you and lover boy you know. Did you know he’s applied for Lexington College? He even has a chance of getting in! I could stop all that. I could have him off the premises by tomorrow morning. All I have to do is click my fingers.”
“You wouldn’t dare!”
“Really? You could ruin everything he has worked for you know? I could have you out of here too. But it could all be alright if you just…co-operated.” His hand stroked Darren’s face. “ Daniel need never know.”
“You can’t get him kicked out! You have nothing on us!”
“Don’t fight it, Darren. I know you want it as much as I do.”
“You can’t, I won’t!” Could he? Daniel had given him so much, he couldn’t repay like this.
“You’ve heard my proposal, how can you refuse?”
“I…please!” He stared up at the teacher in desperation. Robert smiled lazily and lowered his face towards him.
“If you insist.” Roughly he kissed him, Darren briefly fought and Robert dug his knees viciously into his arms. You’re doing this for Daniel, if you pretend you like it he’ll leave him alone.
“Darren!” Robert pushed him away and to his horror Daniel stood in the doorway. No, please, no!
“Daniel, please…” His voice shook with the threatening tears.
“Don’t blame yourself Daniel, Darren just needs a real man and not some pretender to the throne.” Daniel roared and leapt at Robert, knocking down with a blow. “You’ve really done it now, boy!”
Shell-shocked Darren stared into Daniel’s eyes. Please he begged with his own. Don’t leave me! His heart broke as Daniel turned and ran from the room, never looking back.
“Well, well.” Robert began, slowly climbing to his feet. “Maybe I didn’t have anything before, but I sure do now.” He touched his bleeding lip and smiled evenly. “Either you come up with the goods or this incident will be reported and your lover boy will be out. You’ve got until tomorrow, Darren.” He gave him a lecherous once over and left the room humming under his breath.
Darren slid to the floor tears flowing freely. Please no… But it was too late Daniel had left him.
