Chapter 11
The morning started like any other. I met Kevin in the kitchen where he had made breakfast. I sat down at the table and started eating the toast, bacon and eggs. He was, as usual, in the middle of reading the newspaper. Not so much to see what was happening all around the world, more so, to read if anything weird had happened in our town. I took the sports section and started reading it. Suddenly Kevin stood up; he looked at me and said,
“ We have to go!”
I looked at him astonished.
“ Why?” I asked. Usually Kevin didn’t act like this unless something horrible had happened, so that made me nervous.
“ Werewolves!” he simply said as he headed for the door.
“ Wait! What?” I ran after him, “What the heck do you mean werewolves?”
“ Some guy who was out running late last night found a body near the high school!” Kevin said. He was still walking.
As we walked through the door I grabbed my coat.
“ Yeah…but why does that mean it’s a werewolf?” I asked. I had yet to meet my first werewolf, plus, I really hadn’t been studying them as much as vampires since Kevin had said it had been years since a werewolf had been in town. And well, Nick was kinda my first priority.
“ The body was basically torn apart!” Kevin said as he got into his car.
I looked at him,
“ Eww! I swear I won’t eat anything the rest of the day!” Kevin looked at me and raised an eyebrow. “Okay! So that’s not completely true, but I won’t enjoy it!” I told him.
We soon arrived at the high school and we started walking toward the cops that surrounded the area where the body was found. I stopped Kevin right before we reached them.
“ They’re never gonna let us through!”
Kevin smiled at me and pulled something out of his pocket.
“ Oh yeah?” he asked.
I looked at what he held in his hand. It was a police badge.
“ Where did you get that?” I asked surprised.
“ I have a friend on the force, he knows about what we do…” he told me.
“Oh…” I said as we walked past the cops and straight to the crime scene.
We started looking around the area, trying to see if we could find anything to confirm that it was a werewolf that had killed the poor girl. We didn’t see the body, ‘cause they had already moved her. And frankly I didn’t really feel an urge to see her molested body. As we looked in the bushes and in the grass, I got a feeling we weren’t going to find anything, but then again, I didn’t know what to look for.
“ Aha!” Kevin said, and the he looked around to see if anyone had heard him.
I walked over to him.
“ What? What did you find?” I asked. He held something in his hand.
He opened his hand and showed it to me.
“ He’s hurt,” he said. It was a claw.
“ Okay…” I said, not really believing my eyes, “So I guess it’s safe to say that the victim put up a fight?”
“ Seems like it!” Kevin said.
“ Good, maybe that makes it easier for me to kill the thing!” I said.
“ Yeah…maybe…” Kevin said unfocused. Something had caught his attention.
I followed Kevin’s eyes and I saw what he was staring at. He started walking toward it. It was in the forest, on the ground. I followed him in there. It was some red gooey stuff, it looked like blood, but it was a little to dark.
“ What is that stuff?” I asked him.
“ Blood…” he simply said.
“ But it’s to dark!” I protested, “It can’t be human blood!”
“ Then I guess it isn’t!” he said as he looked at me.
“ Oh! Right! Hurt werewolf! Got it!” I said finally getting what he was trying to say. “ So I guess that m the the werewolf ran into the forest afhe hhe had killed the girl?” I continued.
“ Yeah! We should probably patrol here tonight!” Kevin said.
“ Okay…sure!” I said. I really wanted to catch that werewolf. After what had happened to that girl the night before, I really didn’t want that to happen to anyone else.
We made our way back to the apartment so I could start reading up on the werewolves and I needed my daily workout. We started with the reading and then proceeded to the physical training. There’s really nothing interesting to tell about werewolves. Most of what you read in book is true, apart from the fact that there are only werewolves when there’s a full moon. Once you become a werewolf you stay a werewolf. How you become a werewolf is a different story too. If you are attacked during a full moon, you will change. If it’s not a full moon, you’ll most likely die. Comforting thought isn’t it? Not many people have met a werewolf and survived it, apart from slayers of course.
Anyway, we began the physical training with some karate, then moving on to kickboxing. We finished with some weapons training. Since I had to actually fire a gun. You can only kill a werewolf if it’s shot with a silver bullet. I hadn’t ever fired a gun, since my days of slaying began, so of course I didn’t have any routine, hence the weapons training. In the middle of training we were interrupted by a knock on the door.
“ I’ll get it!” I said as I ran to open the door. Kevin was in the middle of fixing the gun, which had somehow gotten stuck. Not good if I was actually faced with a werewolf. I opened the door and found Jess standing on the other side.
“ Hey Jess!” I said giving her a hug, “What’s up?”
Jess smiled at me shyly and answered,
“ Actually I came to see Kevin…”
“ Oh…oh!” I said as I got what she was hinting at, “Okay, well he’s in the “gym”…come on in!”
I let her in and she made her way toward the “gym”. I laughed to myself. It took a lot for Jess to blush, but I swear she was blushing when she told me why she was there.
When I entered the “gym” again, after giving them a couple of minutes to talk, I overheard Kevin telling Jess that he couldn’t go out that night. I hurried inside and said,
“ Kevin, I can patrol on my own!” I smiled at him and winked at Jess, “It’s no problem! You should go out and have some fun!”
Kevin turned and looked at me,
“ But you’ve never been up against a werewolf before!” he protested.
“ So? That doesn’t mean I don’t know what to do when I meet one!” I said.
“ But still!” Kevin said, “It’s not safe, Nick could still be after you!”
“ Yeah, but if he was still out to get me, he probably would’ve tried already!” I said, “ Now…go get ready for your date!” I ushered him out of the room.
“ But…” He began. I cut him of,
“ No buts! Now go!”
“ Fine! Just promise me you’ll be careful!” Kevin said as he turned toward me and looked me in the eye.
“ I promise!” I said, meaning it. Hell, I was just as nervous as he was, but on the other hand, I was confident that I could handle the werewolf. As soon as Kevin left the room, I turned to Jess,
“ So…where are you guys going?” I asked smiling.
“ Well, I was thinking about that new restaurant that opened a couple of days ago, it looks nice…” Jess said grinning.
“ Yeah it does…and I know Kevin will love it, the man loves food!” I said laughing.
“ I’ve noticed!” Jess said laughing with me, “ I should probably get going, I need to get ready too.”
“ Yes…I ought to get back to the training, so I’ll just see you tomorrow!” I said giving her a hug.
“ Yeah! See ya!” She said as she left the apartment again. I went back to my training and just as I was wrapping up for the day, Kevin came back into the room. He was looking really good. Actually he was looking so good I almost wished I were the one going on a date with him. I shook my head to get rid of the thought and said,
“ Kev…you clean up nicely!”
“ Thank you! So, from a woman’s point of view…is this acceptable?” he did a turn.
“ Absolutely!” I said smiling, “Jess will be very happy!”
“ Good, ‘cause that was the point!” he said smiling. He was obviously nervous. My guess is that he hadn’t been on a date in a long time, if ever. I looked at my watch and said,
“ You should probably get going! You don’t wanna keep the lady waiting!” I said, “That’s the first rule of dating!”
“ You’re right!” Kevin said, and he looked at me all worried again, “Are you sure you’ll be alright?”
“ Kevin!” I whined, “I’ll be fine! You trained me, remember?” He nodded. “Now go! Have fun! Hopefully I won’t see you until tomorrow!”
“ Alright, alright!” He raised his hands, “I’m going! I’ll see you Angel!”
“ Yeah! Bye!” I said as I closed the door behind him.
